I'll start by saying that I've been going to Kuttz Barber College for years. Never once had a bad…read moreexperience there. You are able to book an appointment either with a student or a master barber. Throughout the years, I have done both, and was always impressed and absolutely happy with the results. Well, I decided to grow my hair out a bit, and wanted more of a woman's haircut with layers and texture. When I went to the barbers side and showed them a picture of the haircut I wanted, they did the responsible thing and told me they were not skilled in that type of cut, and that I would be better off going to more of a woman hair stylist. Since I had years of amazing haircuts in the barbers side, I decided to go to the beauty side. What a mistake. I made an appointment, and showed up with the same picture of the style I wanted, I asked to book with an instructor because this haircut was for a job interview and I didn't want to risk it. I was told there are no instructors to book with (red flag #1), but that the students were very skilled and they had a manager overseeing their work to make sure everything was done right. Ok...I asked to be booked with someone who had experience with thick wavy Hispanic hair, which behaves and cuts differently from finer hair. They assured me the person they booked me with would do great. So I showed up to my appointment a few minutes early, and sat on the salon chair. First thing was slapped with was a release form that there were no refunds for the haircuts (red flag #2)...I thought, jeez, what awful client would refuse to pay!? How rude! I showed the haircut picture to my stylist (Rune), and asked if she was sure she could make that kind of haircut. She said yes. So I sat back and relaxed. Her people skills were excellent; sweet, polite, her hands gentle during the hair washing and cutting parts. She kept asking me about the bangs, and I kept telling her "just like the picture" and would show her the picture again. I wasn't wearing my glasses so they wouldn't get in the way during the haircut (left them in my car), so when she asked me how my bangs looked, I couldn't really tell. Then finally she hands me a handheld mirror, and I was appalled! The long side sweep bangs I had shown her in the picture were so short they were literally sticking up from the start of my hairline. I panicked and said "what bangs??! this looks nothing like the picture" and frantically started shoving the hair from the back of my head forward to see if there was anything I could do to mask the atrocity she had made. At this point, the salon turned into a cult with the other students and the manager (not sure if it was, in fact, the manager - it was the only adult looking person in the place), with everyone saying how great it looked on me, and telling my stylist what a great job she was doing! (red flag #3) It felt like a twilight zone episode...was anyone else seeing what I was seeing??? Then she starts blow drying my hair....again, showing me she knows nothing about wavy Hispanic hair...it turns into a poof ball if you blow dry it, I mentioned how I apply curl cream when my hair is still wet to create the curls. That information went in one ear and out the other and she just kept blowing drying. The texture and layers are ALL uneven. My 10 yr old daughter could have done a better job. I paid, bought the curl cream (smelled amazing), gave a small tip and left. TLDR: Their customer service is excellent. Downside is they lie about their skill level, and the girl who cut my hair should not be allowed to hold scissors. Do not go here if you actually need your hair to look good. The difference is NIGHT and DAY from the salon to the barber side. I wish I had a wig to wear for my job interview. I look like an absolute clown, and some parts are cut so short that there's no fixing it. I'm just going to have to grow it out. Advice to management: your stylists aren't going to learn anything if they constantly get praise for horrendous cuts. How in the world will they learn with no real feedback, not being given pointers, not being given advice, not being given suggestions, not showing them how to do it, from the manager? You are doing these poor girls a horrible disservice. If you release them into the world like this, they're going to get fired from every job. My hair was already almost like the picture I showed them...it just needed a tiny bit of tidying up and layering...now I have this shapeless mess that will take months to grow out. I cannot believe how horribly my hair was cut...and I kept showing her the picture of what I wanted. Now my hair is completely shapeless, the waves won't even form with curling cream because it was butchered so badly. Nothing is even, nothing makes sense. 1000000% would NOT recommend.

My tech. was sloppy, unprofessional, unkept, and provided poor services. Her nails weren't polished (just natural) which is fine, but they were dirty. It could have been hair dye underneath, but they looked dirty. ??? We had pedicures first. They sat on the floor!!! I've been to many schools for treatments & NEVER had my tech on the floor. It was very uncomfortable for me to put my feet on her knee - as well as tacky. The whole experience was "low rent"! If you were at home with a friend, maybe you'd sit on the floor - but this is supposed to be a school teaching them to behave professionally!!?? The massage part was pathetic. On to the manicures.... They rolled up the tables to us - never plugging in the lamps to see properly & do a good job. Every time she leaned in to work on a nail her shadow made it dark & hard to see - hence my very poor nail polish job. It's terrible! She didn't dress the table properly - my nieces tech put the towels in her table set up as instructed providing good support for her clients wrists during the service. I had to ask for a towel to fold up under my wrist for proper support. My tech talked a lot - and when she talked she stopped working. Very uncomfortable & awkward - although I think she was oblivious to how I felt. She talked so much that she skipped the massage. As she started applying polish I looked over at another person & she was getting a hand & arm massage and I said to my tech - isn't a massage included with a manicure? Ugh!!! I also was very dissaopointed in the teacher. She never inspected her work or asked me how my experience was and if I was satisfied or had any feed back. What's going on here? Not much teaching on professional behavior & appearance! I will not go back. I'm sticking with Empire on Goodwin St.! I also asked the technicians about facials. I asked if they did European or Spa facials with the steam, etc., etc. They didn't know. I've looked on their website after my visit & see that they do have them along with many other services I would have liked with my mani-pedi, but wasn't offered or informed of. Such as a more moisturizing manicure for the same price, nail art - that I even mentioned to my tech that I liked but since she said nothing I assumed they didn't offer it. It was just a bad experience and the best way to describe it was very low rent. I've had wonderful, luxurious treatments at Empire & other schools over the years. This place needs to improve tremendously!

The student doing my services seemed a little unsure even when I pointed out the exact shade I wanted in the book. She had consultations with her instructors several times. The end result wasn't even close to good. Many of the areas had almost no color change, with some chunks showing some color change, but no where near what I had asked for. (I have light brown hair naturally and I was looking for a deep reddish purple tone.) After it was done processing and she had shampooed it out, the instructors consulted outside and then came back in the building. They said that it just hadn't worked and that they wanted me to come back next week for a treatment and a re-do, but that I would have to come earlier than my schedule allowed. They also said I would have to come twice, one day for the treatment and the next day for the color to see if that would fix it. I ended up just dying it at home because I couldn't make it when they were asking me to make it and it came out normal at HOME. My pedicure was very uncomfortable. The student sat on the floor and put my foot on her knee, which was uncomfortable. She didn't really put any effort into the scrub or massage parts. I picked out a polish and she applied it to my toenails, but it was really sloppy. The polish was on my toes a bit in several places and one nail was only partially painted when she said she was done. I was so fed up at this point I simply said it was fine and left. I took the polish off when I got home. Bottom line - Everything from start to finish was sloppy. The facility doesn't really have a good area for doing pedicures and lacks equipment to make it comfortable for the clients. There is NO way that I will return.
