All I can say is Scott threw down the thunder in the kitchen on Mothers day. Lamb cooked to perfection with a vegetable lasagna with hand made pasta and garden fresh hand picked ingredients. A spring salad with light vinagret complemented the main dishes. A vegetable salad medley with some kind of tasty salad dressing was also in the mix. I'm no foody, but this ROCK STAR of a gourmet cooking is ready for performing at the "Day of the Green" for your mind blowing food sensation experience. Oh, I forgot dessert...... Whole wheat short cake with fresh strawberries and reduction sauce of some kind.... paired with just hand made ice cream that he had some secret way of making, which made it super creamy. Oh, did I also mention that he is super cool and loves the A's ? Got to watch Dallas Braden pitch a perfect game with Scott. Talk about the happiest man on the planet ! It's 11:31 p.m. and I just came home from an event where this supposed chef was hired by my friend to prepare a meal for his wife's surprise birthday party. Unfortunately, "Chef" Spencer never showed - even after sending an e-mail the day before confirming his commitment. Despite numerous attempts throughout the evening by my friend to contact Spencer, there was never a reply. No phone call, no e-mail, no anything to explain why he never came. Spencer offered no courtesy whatsoever to explain why he ruined the evening of a wonderful person and the friends who gathered to celebrate. We ended up ordering take out pizza. I assume Spencer's Pantry caters to those wishing to celebrate a special event. But special events are too important to gamble on someone like this flake. AVOID THIS "CHEF"! If you read his website, Spencer indicates he got his start after his girlfriend dumped him for being "worthless and going nowhere." After tonight (and reading the other one-star Yelp reviews), I think his girlfriend was pretty accurate. DO NOT GIVE THIS GUY YOUR DEPOSIT! read more

Scott, do you really exist? We were guests at a birthday dinner many months back at which Scott was supposed to come cook. He cancelled at the last minute, but he had a very serious excuse so although he put the hosts in a real bind, we gave him the benefit of the doubt. We hosted an important dinner more recently and decided to email Scott because his food looked amazing and there was no reason for us to expect that he'd cancel again. Sure enough, with 2 hours of notice, something else happened to him and he again cancelled. Neither time did he get back in touch with us to apologize or make it up. Without passing judgment on the honesty of the events that happened to Scott, we only want to warn others that you're taking a real gamble when you count on one person to come through for you. Based on the fact that he has hardly had a real review in nearly a year, I assume he hasn't been reliably out there cooking for awhile. Such a shame. read more

Far be it from me to wish heartache on anyone, but thank you, Scott Spencer's high school girlfriend, for dumping him all those years ago. After your breakup, he was forced to decide what he wanted to do with his life - go to community college or work for his dad slinging towels at the local gym or... something else. Fortunately for all of us, I'd also like to thank the Food Network and Iron Chef for providing the inspiration for that "something else". After watching 12+ hours of Iron Chef, Scott said he knew that's what he wanted to do. We learned a lot about Scott over the course of our 4+ hour dinner last Friday in Berkeley. We also ate some indescribable food. 1st course: Salmon mi cuit (half cooked) somehow involving bacon and covered in a satsuma beurre blanc. Very tasty - I liked that the salmon was flaky yet still "raw". 2nd course: Salad of amazingness. I know, a salad? But this was my favorite dish (save for dessert, natch). The arugula and radicchio were from his garden in Oakland, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and lightly dressed with lemon oil, mushroom oil, oh - and some shaved foie gras!!! MMMM HMMM 3rd course: Seared scallop from Bodega Bay lounging in a curry froth. It was good, not my favorite, but I'm not much of a scallop person. 4th course: What will henceforth be known as "mushroom cappuccino" or "Go F yourself, Italy". This heady concoction smelled strongly of the hand-picked mushrooms used to make it and the pungent truffle froth on top. Whew. Like really strongly. The taste was much more refined and it was warm and satisfying. 5th course: Seared squab and braised beef with baby brussel sprouts. Woah. Now that was beef, real beef. The squab was from Petaluma (felt very "Portlandia" for a few moments there) and he was a tasty bird. The beef was ex-cel-lent. Nom. 6th course: Chocolate ganache "candy bar" with peanut butter powder (we got an interesting food processing lesson during this introduction) and homemade Blue Bottle coffee ice cream. I'm not embarrassed to say that I licked my plate after this course. There are many unmentionable things I would do to that dessert. This experience combines the best parts of a fancy dinner out (amazing food, great friends, no dishes to do) with the best parts of staying at home (being as LOUD as you want, drinking as much wine as you want (believe me, this was accomplished), and lingering around a table in your comfy pants). I highly recommend booking yours ASAP. But not before I call for another dinner for a housewarming in April. Well, I wish my story was different... We hired Chef Spencer for my girlfriend's 25th birthday 4 years ago and had an absolutely AMAZING time... She and I got engaged last Friday and hired Chef Spencer to do the celebratory dinner after the engagement. We confirmed via phone on Wednesday evening, he seemed very excited and was pleased to have repeat clients. I called on Thursday asking about the menu and he never called back and then called again on Friday just to make sure he was good to go and he didn't answer and didn't call back... 8PM came and went on Friday and no Chef... No Call, No Show. WTF Chef? Still managed to have a great engagement evening despite the lack of Chef. This is not something you can fix or forget. Shame on you Scott. You should be ashamed of yourself. DO NOT TUST SCOTT with your important events. Its NOT worth the risk. He does not have the professionalism to run a business or be trusted with anyones special day. read more

Wow. This was an amazing evening of food. Every course was a delicious work of art. It was the first time I had ever tried Chanterelle Cappuccino and I loved it! I've always been a huge fan of scallops, but these scallops were the best I have ever tasted. I was afraid that I would not have room left for dessert, but when I saw the dessert I knew I could not pass it up! Chocolate ganache with salted caramel butter powder, and sweet corn ice cream.... Scott is a professional culinary badass. He will whip up ridonculous food stuffs that you wish you could create, and then explain his elusive techniques. Several friends and I were more than stoked to have him in our kitchen cooking an ornate top-of-the-line multi course meal for a reasonable price. Each course was interesting and innovative; also brilliantly executed. His extensive experience, including a stint at Boulevard, have obviously honed his craft to an art form. The porcini mushroom "cappuccino" and poached duck egg pasta with duck confit were killer. Find a way to make him come to your house. Extra highly recommended. read more

He was wonderful to work with for planning a special family dinner at our home to celebrate my dad's birthday. I reached out to Scott by phone and we had a brief conversation about the dinner and ran through what kinds of foods we would like or dislike. From there he developed a wonderful menu that had great variety and highlighted the best of the season. Every one of our guests thoroughly enjoyed the meal from beginning to end. Chef Scott is super professional and so easy to work with. He was always prompt in following-up and great about confirming date/time leading up to our dinner. It's all been said before, but I'm happy to add yet another hearty positive review for Scott and his culinary mastery. Scott came to my friend's house and cooked for 7 of us. Each dish was fantastic. He started off with Hamachi stuffed with Israeli couscous that tasted so fresh, I felt like if hopped out of the ocean onto my plate. Next he served a salad made up mostly of vegetables grown in his garden, wth a perfectly light lemon dressing with just the right amount of tangy-ness. Next was a seared day boat scallop. I wanted to stop right there and request ten more of them, except if I had done that I would have missed out on what was probably the best soup I've ever had - his wild morel soup. It was to die for. The fifth course was his sous vide pork belly. Delicious! Absolutely delicious. Dessert was his Candy Bar creation. I wanted to lick my plate. I probably would have if I had imbibed one more glass of wine, but luckily I was able to control myself. All 7 of us cleaned every single one of our plates for all six courses. We all really enjoyed Scott's company, his incredibly laid back nature (how one can be that laid back and prepare the masterpieces that he does, I have no idea), and, of course, his amazing cooking. Been meaning to write this review for six months. Spencer's Pantry is probably one of the best kept secrets and best values in the bay area. For my husband's 40th I rented a house in Sonoma with friends and I hired Scott to cook a celebratory dinner and he far exceeded expectations. My husband and I are foodies and my husband is a picky, not easily impressed new yorker. While I looked into using a service where you hire a chef from one of the bay area's best restaurants to cook a private dinner - after looking at Scott's website and speaking with him, I just had a feeling in my gut that he would deliver. Wow - I was right. Scott has got this business model down pat and really made the whole thing unbelievably easy. Night of the dinner, he drove to Sonoma with all his gear and food, made an amazing meal (he brought everything prepped so it took him no time to cook), was the definition of awesome to work with -- we had a whole mess of kids with us and some of them would not go to bed as hoped so dinner was delayed & interrupted and he was so chill and made a point of saying that we could go at our own pace and start and stop the dinner whenever we liked - he didn't mind being there for as late as we wanted. Most importantly, the food was amazing. Definitely one of the best meals I've ever had. He could easily charge double (though I hope he doesn't so we can book him again and again). read more

We were so lucky to discover Chef Spencer! A few years ago, a friend organized a dinner at her place cooked by Spencer and ever since, we've been completely hooked. Where else are you going to find an amazing and super fun personal chef who comes over your place, brings everything needed, and cooks a mind-blowing multi-course meal? And then...does all of the cleanup! Not only is Spencer's food so delicious, beautiful, and amazing each time, but he is super fun to hang out with. I love watching him cook and learning about what he does. My favorite part of the evening each time is when we sits down to hang out with us and have a glass of wine when he's' done with the meal. Spencer's prices are very reasonable for what he delivers. I don't know anyone else who offers this kind of an evening and highly recommend giving it a try for a unique and special experience. Scott aka "Spencer" aka "Scotty" aka "Chef" recently cooked a meal for my parents' 40th anniversary. We had a total of 11 guests who attended and a total of 11 sufficiently "wowed" guests who left around 1AM. The morel mushroom soup and pork belly dishes were no doubt the "spectacular" favorites of the group but what made the night even more enjoyable was the fact that we were all at home, together, eating - like always. And as always, a dance party ensued - even Scott jumped in. 12 bottles of wine, and a bottle of scotch later, the sweet scallop with fresh pasta and uni butter, along with the unbelievable chocolate ganache desert were the only things protecting all of us from a hellish hangover the next morning. Tonight I had the best six-course meal of my life. Scott is a super friendly, extremely amazing chef. Every dish we had tonight was SUPERB. Tonight I was a guest at a private party and am already planning to be booking Scott's chef services in 6 weeks (I hope he is available!). Ok. This is the first Yelp review I have ever written. And if it is the only review I ever write, I will be glad it is for Scott Spencer. I have had not one but TWO meals catered by this man in the last three weeks, and they were both truly memorable and insanely delicious evenings (the first was at someone else's home, the second at my own). If you are trying to plan a memorable evening for a friend or family member, for a special occasion or just because sometimes it's fun to have 6-course meals catered in your home, I cannot recommend Scott highly enough. Scott shows up fully prepared, with dishes and food prep done, and manages to prepare course after course of some of the tastiest morsels I have yet had in this city. He is willing to share his secrets of food prep, in case you need to re-create some of the amazing things you eat, and leaves you with a printed menu for each guest so that you can look longingly at it for days to come, trying to plan the next meal he should come cater. (Or at least that's what I've been doing). I was nervous that 6-courses would be excessive but each course is just as it should be, a small plate with several bites worth, so that at the end of the meal you are left feeling full and happy but not sent into a severe and uncomfortable food coma. Scott is professional and creates delicious food (a lot of which is grown in his own garden in Oakland), right in your own home. If you're planning an event, you should probably just contact Scott now and wait for your delicious evening to unfold. If you're not, maybe you should reconsider. Also, did I mention he does the dishes? HE DOES THE DISHES. If that is not a reason to have anyone come and cater your dinner.... I don't know what is. read more

This review is looooooonnnngg overdue. Scott Spencer is the man. I'm going to try to be brief because the reviews here are quite complete already but I'll say this much- my friends and I big time into food and eat at SF's finest restaurants as regularly as we get together. We have different tastes and come from different places, having lived in some of the world's food capitals including Paris, London, New York. Scott's food is as legit as it gets. Scott created a truly outstanding menu, utilizing fresh ingredients that he picked up from a local market. It was evident that he invested a solid amount of time into creating the menu, selecting the ingredients, and preparing before the meal itself. The net result was a cut above. As for Mr Spencer as a personality, all-around great guy. Extremely personable, easy going (perhaps my impression of chefs from television is that they are either demanding or abrasive), but seriously, you can hang out with this dude like he's your friend (and likely you'll want to be friends with him after he makes your stomach smile). If you want to blow your mind, give Scott a call. He will make it rain. As an aside, if you're checking my other reviews and notice they're either 5 stars or 1 star, it's because I only write about excellent or terrible experiences. This one deserves 6. read more

5 courses, all amazing, all made before our eyes from the comfort of my cozy kitchen. and i didn't lift a finger (except to pour me some mutha-effin wine). doesn't get much better than that. scott really has a gift. my friends and i are still raving about the duck pasta with soft-poached egg, that pork belly, ooooh ahhh that porcini soup, the hamachi with white miso glaze, and ohhhh mmmmm geee, that chocolate-caramel cake with corn ice cream and madeline cookies. it was a truly incredible feast, which in a restaurant setting alone would seem unreal - but in your own home!? with heavy-handed wines pours!? and your own soundtrack!? and a smiling chef sharing techniques and nuggets of food knowledge with you!!?? who does the dishes?! A professional chef comes to cook in your home, he brings his own dishes, pots and pans, and it's $75 per person for a 6 course customized meal that would fit right in at Fleur de Lys, Ame or Quince? What's the catch? I've had him cook for us twice now and... there is no catch. It's a unique, luxurious experience that rivals, and in some ways is even better than a 4-star restaurant. --Some ingredients are straight from his own garden --Presentation is beautiful --Just about any allergy and food preference can be accommodated --He leaves the kitchen as clean (if not cleaner) as when he arrived --He will work with you on the menu to tailor it to your tastes In short Scott provides an A-list experience that your friends, who were lucky enough to be invited to dinner, will be raving about for a long time to come. I heard that Berkeley had some wonderful restaurants, so I went on Yelp to check things out. That's how I found Scott! Scott brought five star food to us for a VERY reasonable price, and we were able to be as loud and rowdy as we wanted (and like any good bachelorette party should be!). I had the distinct pleasure of a "Spencer's Pantry" experience this past Sunday, and I have trouble putting to words how great of a time was had by all. My friends and I all agreed that was an epic night - one that will leave a lasting impression for years to come. The concept is so simple that is might be confusing for most. Spencer has a talent, you have a kitchen (and an appetite), and your friends now have a new best friend. Spencer has a talent. He possesses the technique of a classically trained chef, having attending the culinary academy and cooked at various top-notch restaurants in SF (i.e. Spruce and Boulevard). His love for cooking is so genuine and his demeanor so unassuming, that it is humbling watching how simple Scott makes everything seem. Combined with his training, is a creative mind that is focused on combining the freshest and highest quality ingredients in novel ways. His cuisine is comparable to many of the top restaurants in San Francisco (trust me, I've been to almost all of them); however, his laid-back attitude and dynamic personality make the entire dining experience memorable. You have a kitchen. Scott came by my apartment a couple of days before the dinner to take a look at the space where he will be performing his magic. We has a couple glasses of wine, got to know each other, and discussed some preferences / logistics. Two days later, at 7pm sharp, Scott arrived at my house with a spectacle of food. He brought his own ingredients, food he prepared that day for the dinner, plates, pans, etc. My roommate and I were amazed to see our kitchen, neglected for months without any meals, look as if it was from a scene in Top Chef. Your friends now have a new best friend. And that friend is you. I invited 7 of my closest friends from San Francisco, many of which are young foodies. We were dressed in our finest garb so as to match the beautiful scene in the kitchen. We bought bottles of champagne (sparkling wine actually for you wino snobs ;), white/red wines, and muscato; we paired these with the various courses and in between courses with no strict order, but it was the food that took the center stage. Each course was beautifully prepared and well-executed upon. I don't want to go into the details of each dish and how amazing it was and how all the ingredients were locally sourced and creatively combined, etc. Instead, let me just tell you that the lasting sensory impression that will stay with me is that it was a phenomenal meal and, more importantly, a great dining experience. Along with getting big time points for organizing an event like this for my friends, I gained a friend in Scott, who is an outstanding young chef and a gentleman. Just be careful: Scott isn't only good at cooking - he kicks butt at arm wrestling. I feel truly privileged to have had this dining experience and cannot give a stronger recommendation (there should be more stars on Yelp). read more

just attended a dinner part last weekend prepared by scott. it was all-around just a fantastic experience. short of dedicating a day or two and preparing this kind of meal yourself -- which, to be honest, wouldn't be nearly as inventive or taste nearly as good -- this is the best fine dining value out there. menu included: 1. garden salad, preserved meyer lemon dressing -- all grown in scott's garden in the east bay. it was especially great to try purple cauliflower for the first time, and learn how to preserve meyer lemons. 2. spring risotto (truffle, farm egg yolk, sherry gastrique) -- an amazingly rich and earthy dish. scott's sous vide skillz were on showcase here with the egg yolk...the most delicious egg i've every had. 3. wild morel soup (truffle froth) -- mushrooms gathered in the bay area and sourced from scott's friend, the soup came out as a play on a latte. i could've eaten/drank a gallon of this stuff. 4. seared day boat scallop (Farro, lentils, cous cous, shellfish broth, uni butter) -- the uni butter was out of this world, also interesting to learn how to make it. really gave the dish a taste of the sea without being too over-powering, with the grains and lentils providing the perfect texture to balance the dish. 5. sous vide pork belly (fresh grits, sun burst squash, pork tare demi glace) -- scott's sauces are the perfect compliment to all his dishes, and this was no exception. the sous vide then seared pork belly was like salty-sweet candy...couldn't get enough of it. 6. the candy bar (chocolate ganache, shortbread, salted caramel, peanut butter powder, vanilla ice cream) -- sounds simply but the precision and creativity in the dish was obvious, from the home made peanut butter powder (a little molecular gastronomy) to the expertly molded ganache. this menu is just a sampling -- scott's always working on new dishes and also said he would go off of any restrictions or direction you set for him. he was a great person to have as a part of our meal...has a vast knowledge from working in many different kinds of restaurants (including ones like spruce and boulevard), is eager to answer any questions, is laid-back, down-to-earth and unobtrusive, and has some tattoos of his grandmother's silverware on his forearms...so he's got that going for him...which is nice. read more

Ohhhh, this review is long overdue! I couldn't recommend Scott Spencer more highly. Not only is he an extremely skilled chef (with quite a resume!), he's incredibly polite and charming. Scott prepared a scrumptious and unique 6 course menu for my birthday last month and it was truly a meal to remember. I'm quite a foodie and I was really impressed with Scott's creations: his Summer Risotto with soft farm egg yolk, sugar peas and sherry gastrique made me swoon! The Seared dayboat scallop with golden noodles, sunburst squash and shellfish-uni butter broth - OMG! Scott came fully prepared with everything, I only needed to provide silverware, glasses and the wine. After dinner was over, he packed up and left without a trace of kitchen mess - THAT was a birthday gift. While visiting friends in San Francisco, we were treated to an exquisite meal for six at their home, prepared by private chef Scott Spencer. With just a couple of well-packed bags (home-grown produce, locally sourced ingredients, serving dishes, all prepped before arrival), Scott created a beautiful six-course food experience. He talked with us knowledgeably and passionately about his craft, and it was clear from his painstakingly designed menus - created around the best locally available foods on a given day, with lots of produce supplements from Scott's own garden - that we were learning from an artist. Wow. Scott really knows what he is doing! He is a true artist, and this is definitely his craft. My friend threw a dinner party for 10 at her place in Pac Heights recently, and he did an absolutely amazing job. Love his knowledge, the fact that he has his own amazing garden and his own friend resources for eggs, etc. His passion for this craft was apparent, and it came thru in the food as well. We had the BEST time. Totally worth it, so fun, so delicious, so creative, so interesting, so amazing. And so easy! It is truly a unique experience to have a Michelin-level experience right in your friend's dining room, where you can relax, ask the chef as many questions as you want, laugh as loud as you want, drink as much as you want, etc. It's like everything you love about foodie dining, w/o all the stuffiness you don't love. I told some other friends about it afterwards, and now another of my friends is going to call Scott to organize a similar dinner in Berkeley! Love this guy! read more
