We used the service almost every day when I was recovering from surgery. The food is always fresh - one commenter mentioned the macaroni and cheese, which is probably our least favorite, but it's still pretty good. The chicken, beef and fish dishes are all fresh with delicious sides, and the options, including salad, soup, dessert, etc. are great as well. The delivery is always within 2 and 5 PM for us in San Francisco, and the delivery folks are always pleasant. We don't order as much as I'm now recovered, but it's always a special treat to have their meals. One entrée and a salad are usually enough for us for dinner as older people. We don't eat huge meals. Really appreciate their service. I just saw a note that there are limited vegetarian options - there is always a vegetarian entrée and the sides are often vegetarian as well. read more

Home on the Range has been nothing short of a lifesaver. My 89 year old Mom no longer cooks but desires to live independently. Having a fresh ready-to-eat meal show up every weekday for dinner has allowed her to stay in her home. And the food is very good! The crab cakes are the best! Always with a fresh salad and I like the salad dressing a lot. Less expensive and much healthier than restaurant food. Updating my review. We have been using this delivery service years. Last time we cancelled one of the meal that tested awful and comes frozen. Unfortunately, they keep sending instead of other meals. The macaroni pressed and maybe cooked week before delivery. I hope we can have appropriate meals as far as still receiving daily. My lady is almost 97 y old and we have this service only she liked it before. read more

I was so excited to NOT HAVE TO COOK on a recent Friday night. I first heard of Home on the Range in 1991 (Yes, believe it or not) when I was expecting and my husband's company gave us a very generous gift card. Unfortunately we lost the baby at birth, but used the gift card. I remembered the service when a friend told me she still used them. So, I ordered a meal for the night and then 3 sides: Chicken pot pie Turkey chili Spit Pea soup I got my meal, which was ok but not very filling (crab cakes, only 2.) But, instead of soup I got another chili, and I was planning on the soup with the crab cakes. Now I have the chicken pot pie left, but I have no heating instructions for it. I can "guess" that I should remove the plastic wrap from inside the lid, and probably not place it in the oven with the plastic lid. . . . but I sure wish I had received instructions. The day I got the order I called, knowing they were gone already but expecting a call back regarding the mix up with the soup. But I got nothing. I might not order again, and give in to driving for a pickup from a local restaurant instead. read more

My concern is easy to fix, and I hope they take heed: this is just dangerous I'm just concerned: last week, I am recovering from a long run with a major illness and my mother is very eldermy- I just couldn't do what needed to be done and ive finally caved- found some wonderful support and ordered out) but: the last three meals have all had bloody chicken or extremely rare red meat- it's clearly not been even brought to a safe temp. I'm disabled- exactly how am I supposed to get lunch ready now? I'm sorry, but this is unacceptable- too much work for me. And it's sad, I previously have had several lovely meals delivered by this company, but have there been staff changes? Is the chef a cigarette smoker? Heavy drinker? The lack of touch with what's going on,( heavy garlic lately) and cluelessness as to danger of undercooked foods- leaves me concerned enough to oust this. I did quietly return and received a credit for the bloody chicken the day before last- one would think- hey, check the kitchen- that's dangerous... but here we are again, meat sitting bloody in a plastic box. me looking for another dinner. read more

two stars says I've experience better and that is certainly true of our meal tonight. They have a ways to go if they expect people to be repeat customers. UPDATE: Home on the Range gave me credit for the two meals that were not what we ordered and said they would add more contact information on their website. We ordered 3 meals and when they arrived two of the three were not what we had ordered. The tag on the bag had the correct information on it but there was a chicken dish rather than the beef dish and the fish and chips came without chips. To make matters worse, there's no phone number to call to get the order corrected. I left a message but that didn't get our order fixed by dinner time tonight. The food was adequate. Certainly OK for the price but none of the meals were good enough to say YES! to coming back for a second try. read more

The food is good but Home on the Range uses plastic bags which are non-recyclable and non-compostable. Terrible for the environment. The food containers also have non-recyclable, non-compostable plastic lids. I called and told them I couldn't use their service until they stop using plastic, and was told they use plastic bags to prevent leaking. In fact, I've ordered takeout from restaurants through Caviar, which only uses compostable food containers and sturdy paper bags that don't leak. No problems. Please, Home on the Range, wake up and stop using plastic. read more

This place has been a life saver over the years. I was first given a gift certificate for these home made meals when my daughter was first born and they have seen us through several illnesses, a hospitalization and just our crazy busy lives when we don't have time to cook. I love the convenience and the prices! The food is always pretty good, and the variety is fantastic. The only negatives: only 1 vegetarian option every day, and usually the soups aren't vegetarian, nor are the salads. They never use organic ingredients and use A LOT of disposables, which drives me nuts. I wish they would put their food in biodegradable containers without plastic, and wish they'd use organic ingredients, even if they had to raise the prices. But I ALWAYS give gift certificates to people who've had babies recently because it is just such a great convenient way to get a home cooked meal! read more

Home on the Range has been in business since 1990 providing healthy, pre-cooked meals for delivery to homes and offices in the Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco Counties). I was introduced to them via my nutritional needs by my doctors in Berkeley. Not only is this the NICEST group of people, the food is GREAT! Each month they create a daily menu (Monday - Friday) of entrees, with at least one vegetarian. The portions are large! And the food is really flavorful. Sample dishes include paella, roasted chicken, spinach pie. And they have soups, salads, pastas, and desserts. If you haven't tried them, do it! Same-day orders must be placed by 1 P.M. for delivery around dinner time--perfect if you want to eat good and healthy on-time. There's a minimum charge of $20 per day (or 3 orders per week if you need daily delivery), but well worth it! Meals range $11-13, and Fridays you get dessert too! The pumpkin cheesecake last month was to die for! You all know I'm SERIOUS about my food! I can't say enough about the quality on this one! This was a gift given to my wife with breast cancer. Horrible! Inedible! Plus did they ask for allergies? No! She is allergic to radishes which were in the salad ( by the way that was not mentioned in the meal) and it is full of radishes! Horrible, expensive, and not worth the money! She will not tell the giver of the gift certificate, because apparently it was great when she received it. $15 per meal (plus tax) for two small enchiladas, a tablespoon of rice and a tablespoon of beans. No flavor, and very chunky, not shredded for those who are not well. For the cost, I can get a great meal delivered that is wholesome, organic and delicious. SAVE YOUR MONEY! read more

I have been using this meal service for over 10 years, initially when my elderly mother was ailing and needed food delivered while I was working and away from home. Our Dog Loved It! As a wonderful gesture we were offered a meal while taking care of a recouperating family member. This company had a great reputation however the food was the most low grade institutional stuff we've ever tasted. No love or care in the preparation or presentation. The pasta sauce tasted like someone opened a can of tomato paste and added a couple of cups of water and poured it over limp noodles. The pork chop with bourbon sauce was inedible. A tough piece of meat with bottled BBQ sauce smeared on top. The instant mashed potatoes added injury to insult. Finally, it was expensive! You could do a lot better for less money calling your favorite Chinese take out place. Needless to say, our dog loved it! read more

Just found this service last week. It's good, affordable and relatively healthy. Customer service is great -- they are able to make substitutions (I substitute veggies for the bread and other starches). Delivery arrives in the late afternoon. My wife's been sick recently & unable t o help with the shopping & cooking. We have 2 young kids & I usually don't get home til 6:00 at night. Home on the Range has been a real life saver. The food is tasty, normal portions, fresh high quality ingredients, & decent service. They're not open on the weekends & don't always answer the phone during regular business hours, but other than that they've made my life a lot less stressful, while proving me & my family good, wholesome food. We have dined with Home on the Range for...as long as they've been in business--honestly don't know how many years. Wonderful food. Home cooking with healthy fresh ingredients. They are able to customize (for us veggies more than salad or the "old style" salad dressing, etc.). I like a quick dial of the phone before 1 pm to have dinner delivered that night. Always helpful, very accommodating and friendly. I recently gave the new competitor--Munchery--a couple of tries. They have great online photos and a good food stylist but the food really does not measure up. Once in a while H on R has a meal I'm not crazy about. but very rarely. read more

A relative has been ill recently and needed assistance with regular meals. Home on the Range has been a real lifesaver for us. They deliver Monday through Friday and you can order anytime before 1:00pm to have dinner delivered that day. The food is outstanding, freshly prepared that day, with vegetables and fruits in season. Every day offers a choice of 3 or 4 different entrees including one vegetarian meal. If I could ding them one star, it would be that they don't offer exclusively gluten free meals or even gluten sensitive, but fortunately my relative does not need that. Here are just some examples of entrees from their menu: Cherry Balsamic Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Vegetables Coq Au Vin with Mushrooms Crab Cakes and Oven Fried Fish and Chips French Lamb Stew with Leeks, Carrots and Red Wine Served with Mashed Potatoes Seafood Risotto with Salmon, White Wine, Tomatoes, and Shrimp Manicotti with Spinach and Ricotta Leek and Mushroom Turnovers You can order soup, salads and desserts, too. I love that they deliver a real meal right to your door. I ordered an entree and a pot pie which was more than enough food for two people for just about $20. The entree was great (they have a selections of different entrees every day), but the pot pie was just okay. I definitely plan to order from them again - the only downside is that you have to place an order by 1pm for same day delivery and I always seem to forget. read more

All I can say is, Thank You! My family had dinner from Home On The Range delivered to us from loving friends, when my dad passed away almost 4 years ago. Just today a dear friend of mine last her dad, too. When I was remembering the little things that happened in the first weeks of my own dads passing; I remembered the dinners we received from Home On The Range. With that being said, I knew that a few days worth of dinner delivery to "Mama" might be nice. So far, she loves it, said it was delicious,,and is looking forward to her next dinner.
