As a dance newbie, going into a dance class can be awfully intimidating. Add 2 left feet and the fact that dance has never been my forte, this usually sets me up for immediate discomfort and an ultimate choice to never return. I attended a free open house and expected not to like it (for previously mentioned reasons). However, I was surprised at how comfortable and welcome I felt. The instructors were straight forward, yet friendly and approachable. They were thorough in their explanation and demonstration of the basics, and were very willing to answer questions. If you are expecting the instructor to break down every single move repeatedly just for one person and watch and correct your every step, join a private lesson. Keep in mind, you are not the only student, and while repetition is key, you cannot expect to do enough repetition in one hour of instruction. Anyhow, although the first class was definitely a struggle, for the first time ever, I felt that perhaps I could actually learn and become more comfortable on the dance floor. Overall, my experience has been great. As a matter of fact, only 6 weeks in and with no prior dance experience, I decided to join a performance team, and have felt more confidence and seen more improvement then I ever have. I went from taking just bachata, to now trying salsa, burlesque, and hip hop. I recommend and invite everyone to try it for yourself! read more

The instructor Celso does a better job of degrading the students than teaching dancing. I feel like learning to dance is supposed to be a recreation and a fun activity that people want to learn and enjoy. Celso gets frustrated at the students and says things that make them feel stupid and incompetent, even yelling at them. It really is baffling that he treats paying customers like school children. Maybe he should get frustrated at himself that the students aren't learning, since he is the teacher. It's not a good environment especially if you have a long day at work or whatever and want to go enjoy a dance class and really learn in a positive way. read more

I initially hesitated joining a dance company due to my lack of dancing skills. I took a chance with Speranza Dance Company and its been the best time I've ever had. The environment here is inviting, fun and informative, everything I needed to feel secure and become a better dancers. I was given a free salsa class since it was my first time there. I have zero experience in salsa and specifically went here because their website said their beginners class was specifically for people with zero experience. Well if this was for beginners with zero experience then I must have negative zero experience. Within about 3 minutes of the class starting the teacher was already teaching turns, cross steps, Suzy Q's. I was like wtf? If you're a beginner with zero experience do not come to this studio. They go way to fast and don't believe in repetition. In order to be good at any sport or skill it's always about repetition. Repeat, repeat, repeat! read more

If you're a pure beginner, interested in the art of Latin dance and looking for a welcoming, friendly and patient dance studio in the South Bay; keep looking because Speranza Dance Company is not it. Especially if your instructor is Stephanie. This is my personal experience with SDC. I've attended several dance classes and workshops before but just not Latin style and not close to our neighborhood. On a recent weekend, I went out of my comfort zone and signed up for SDC's advertised "Beginners Classes." The young man up front welcomed me and reassured me that "Saturdays are especially for beginners." Since it was my first visit, he said the first lesson is free to try out and hopefully sign up for a package. After a few minutes, there were about eight of us students when the instructor, Stephanie arrived. She didn't introduce herself. I overheard her name from another student. She looked around and then asked me (and only me), "Have you ever (Latin danced) before?" I said no. Then she got started. No introduction, no warm up, nothing. We went front, back, then side, side. Easy right? Then we did right turn, left turn and this is where I started having trouble keeping up. Then we went to tap moves, angles and then something called "Grapevine," I think. All the while she kept saying "basic step, basic step..." I wanted to take a video of the choreography she was leading. How was I supposed to get the basic steps of tap and Grapevine if I cannot even do a simple turn? After a brief pause, I asked, "This is the beginners class, right?" And she said it was a "combo class." So I asked again, "is there a beginners level class?" to which she looked annoyed and said something like this is what it is and resumed. Not once did she check on any of us. A couple of other students were more encouraging; Stephanie was indifferent. I felt like an intrusion to her perfect group. At the time, even though I already knew I was over my head in this beginners course, I promised myself that I would stick it out and stay the whole hour. But at about the 30 min mark of the class, she instructed everyone to pair up. What?! How could I dance with a partner when I cannot even go solo? Sadly, I opted to sit out and watch but when they got started, I quietly left the studio defeated. There was no teaching at all. She didn't check my footwork even once to make sure I was getting it. She didn't check anyone's footwork. This is the first instructor I ever had that wasn't observant of her/his students or even cared about their progress. She just kept going. I have children who were/are still on dance teams and crews. And this felt more like an audition or tryout. The choreographer comes in, shows you the moves and you execute; sink or swim. And I sank big time and the lifeguard didn't even throw me a lifesaver let alone a rope to pull me in. And remember, this was advertised as "Beginners" Saturday online and at reception. Too bad Stephanie didn't get the memo. I'm sure she knows her (stuff) but she is the most ineffective and passionless about teaching dance instructor for beginners that I have ever encountered or observed personally or through my children. One star because the young man didn't make me pay after my experience otherwise zero, if possible. On a final note and upon further recollection, I'm not saying I'm just saying beware that SDC doesn't welcome a diversity of students of any and all ability levels. I mentioned earlier that Stephanie asked me (and only me) if I had ever (Latin danced) before. There were only seven other students that day. And I happened to be the only non-Hispanic student that afternoon. In today's climate, when an organization singles out someone for their race and treats them differently than others, that could be considered racism. When an organization makes assumptions or stereotypes based on race, that could be considered racism. Stephanie represented Speranza Dance Company, therefore the company is in part responsible in their treatment of its students. When searching for your next beginners dance class especially in diverse South Bay Chula Vista, make good choices. You'll have to make the drive out of town but there are others more welcoming of students of all abilities and cultures. And if it's truly NOT a beginners course, don't advertise it as such. And please hire instructors that truly wish to inspire their students to spread the art not demoralize them. read more

i went to one of their dance socials. there was a beginners bachata class followed by several hours of social dancing. the class was well suited for beginners and taught well. all the people there were very friendly. there were no dance snobs who look down on you if you aren't a high level dancer or wont dance with you because you are a beginner. the studio is small, but dont let the size deter you. i really enjoyed my experience there. read more
