They offered to give me a filling on 2 of my teeth right then and there ( one being the broken one and the one next to it that needed it) They talked me through it and reassured me every step of the way. I went back 2 days later for a teeth cleaning, since it had been 2 years. The hygienist was so kind and gentle and did an amazing job. There was no shame or judgement since it had been so long. After my exam, X-rays, and treatment plan, I was told I needed one extraction, a bone graft, five fillings, and eventually five crowns. I signed a financing agreement for approximately $4,600 to begin treatment. Later, after speaking with my insurance company, I learned that DeLand Smiles is actually out of network with my insurance plan. My insurance representative called the office with me on the line and asked why I had never been informed. The response from the office was: "There's a sign in the lobby. It's up to them to see it and read it." That answer was extremely disappointing. If a patient believes an office accepts their insurance, that should be communicated clearly before they commit to thousands of dollars in treatment--not left to a sign in the waiting room. I have no issue paying for quality dental care, but I do have an issue with a lack of transparency. I now owe $4,600 and still need additional fillings and crowns, which I was quoted another $5,600 for. Because of this experience, I chose to continue my treatment with a dentist who is actually in my insurance network. My advice to anyone considering this office: Call your insurance company yourself and verify that the dentist is in network before signing any financial agreements. Don't rely solely on what you're told. I hope this review encourages the office to be more transparent with future patients so no one else ends up in the same situation. Long story so I'll condense it. The office was very clean and I found the staff to be very nice and helpful. The hygienist, Kerry, put me at ease, while getting me prepped. Dr. Pinker was professional and took his time making sure that the area was numb. When he started working he explained what he was doing each step of the way. It all went smoothly, with some minor discomfort when he was removing the two nerves. Explaining that the other nerves were very close. Nothing major. He cleaned up the area and then put in a couple stitches. I wasn't sedated but had a few numbing injections and laughing gas. Two suggestions I would give him is, come in before we begin to prep and introduce himself. Because I think it'd be nice. And secondly, perhaps they should call the next day and ask how the patient is doing. I've always had the doctor or dentist do this when I lived elsewhere. Just a nice gesture. But, otherwise, I'm very pleased with my outcome.

But probably the deal breaker was that for a routine check up after the dental part of the appt. we would've had to wait SIX MONTHS for a cleaning. We've NEVER run into this kind of arrangement in our collective 140 year experience. One explanation, we thought, was that they couldn't hire or retain enough dental hygienists. And why is that? Are there not enough dental hygienists in St. Augustine, or does the practice not pay them enough or otherwise provide a miserable working experience? Who knows, and really we don't care. We are tired with tolerating drama anywhere for whatever reason, so we're going back to our "old" dentist in Orlando. We got two appts. about 10 days out from contacting them. The appt. includes a cleaning.
