A few staple items were also out of stock, which was a bit disappointing for a regular grocery run. That said, the produce section was excellent--really fresh and well stocked, probably the highlight of the store. I'll be coming here more often while my usual UWS location is under renovation since it's still convenient for me, especially given it used to be my old neighborhood. It's not a bad store at all, just a very different energy, and it'll take a bit of getting used to.

I often buy Siggi yogurts as here they are $1.99 each. The ladies - Dolores, Affou, Mamata, Savita, Tofu - at the checkout are friendly, kind and remember customers. A few speak French which I practice with them. Being originally Greek, the Dolmas in the prepared food section, are plump and particularly tasty. It's worth buying a few to take home. Adam looks taciturn but always is kind to me. He is behind the deli counter preparing sandwiches and always gives me a quarter pound of the Jambon de Paris. Miguel and Medina are also here. A loyalty card is worth having and once having accumulated many points I paid the princely sum of $1.61 for a pretty bouquet of roses in assorted colors that cost $11.99. Now that's a steal! Eden Gourmet is the sister supermarket to my beloved sadly closed Eden Gourmet of 14th street. This too is packed to the brim with fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, dairy, chicken and meats. A large variety of sparkling waters, frozen entrees, ice creams and assorted temptations are here too. A small bakery has cakes and pastries available. I pop in often to get milk or to see what's new and always to say hello to everyone. I always feel happy coming to Eden Gourmet Marketplace!

It can make lines a bit confusing during busier times, but not a dealbreaker by any means.

I am a regular customer of Spice Corner for last 2 years. I used to go there every week for my spices and sweets. now I moved to down town, I try to come once in a month. I used to be a big fan of SPICE CORNER and the stuffs. The Qualities Were the best. but my last two trip to Spice Corner shook me up because of the stuffs behavior and qualities of the spices, sweets, and meat. They Mix the Lamb with beef and sell it to so many people. I am Hindu person I cant eat beef. I was very Shocked. I tried to complain over the phone and ask for the owner. the owner tried to Ignore the call but I was I then he answered the phone and he apologized. I came back to the store again after 4 days and ordered for 10 pound of lamb , sweets and Spices. I went back to my car and i was checking the lamb to be make sure. I found again 10-15 pieces of beef. then I was checking the expired date of the Spices. I saw they had 2 levels of expired dates. 1 of them was 02-25-2013 and other 12-30-13. the spices were smelling very bad. I went to the store and I saw that the owner and the worker arguing with A customer for his Food Stamp benefits. Because they give you cash for food stamp and charge you 40%. The other customer started CURSING them suddenly the argument turned into a fight. the other customer was yelling and told me that those people are liar fraud they ripped you money by overcharging you. after the argument i tried to talk to the owner and told him that can you please check my lamb? he answered me very rudely that I don't care its lamb or not and i dont have time to check. and we didnt sell you anything. The worker was telling me to get out from the store. so tell me why should I go back to spice corner and are they trust-able? If they can cheat with me like these then think about other customers. Since moving to Manhattan a month ago, my wife and I have been to this little store 4 times already. My wife likes to cook some indian food every now and then and she needed to figure out a place to buy all those spices and flavorings. We found this place to be a one stop shop since it carries everything you'd need for indian food. And these are brands straight from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, so now we're talking authentic indian food! (Lucky Me!) The owners are very nice gentlemen and are always marking down prices for us ("$6.99, but I'll give you for 5.99"). They also have these delicious homemade sweets. We never have to buy them cuz every time we stop by, they give us three or four pieces on the house. In summary, for such a small store this place has a lot of variety, is well stocked, and the customer service is beyond phenomenal. 5 stars! read more

It was my first time having fresh Yellow Barhi dates and I was amazed! The texture is super crunchy and crispy. Very sweet and delicious. Sampled multiple different kinds of mithai: barfi, coconut Cham Cham, milk cake, kalakand, soan papri, coconut cutlet, saffron peda, jeelabi, kaju Kati, Stuffed Gulab Jamun. Overall very sachrine (I expected that from mithai in general), kalakand and saffron peda are my favorites as they are more milky and decadent (they are made from milk as opposed to the other ones made with flour). Whatever the actual name, it seems that this Mediterranean specialty store has been open since 1947, run first by the Smitsis Family, and then the Karamouzis (including brothers Sotiris, Dinos, and Panayiotis). The Karamouzis moved it a few doors north to its present location in 1983. The neighborhood around the store has evolved a great deal over the years, but inside, old world charm persists. Everywhere you look there are bulk bins, barrels, and sacks brimming with: - Spices: all the staples needed for Mediterranean, Indian and North African cuisines, including za'atar, dried tamarind, cloves, allspice, rock salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric, paprika, red pepper, black mustard seed, etc... - Dried fruits: pineapple, apricots, raisins, figs, diced orange peel, dates, etc... - Dried nuts: cashews, macadamias, almonds in every form, walnuts, pistachios, etc.. - Grains, beans, lentils, and flours - Coffee I love that International Grocery has stuck with bins and barrels for all these years. Bulk bins were the norm when the store first opened and are so much more environmentally friendly than the ubiquitous single use plastic packaging we see nowadays. Environmentally conscious folks are increasingly coming around to appreciate bulk bins and I wouldn't be surprised if they became the hot "new" trend in coming years. If you stick with something for long enough, it comes back into fashion, right? The wonders don't end with all those glorious bins, however. Far from it. Improbably, all of the following (and more) also neatly fit into a store the size of a suburbanite's two-car garage: - Olives -- about 10-15 kinds by my last count, but I've seen even more varieties at times. I love my crisp, green Castelvetranos and black Kalamatas; the Progeny loves her pimento-stuffed Manzanillas. - Antipasti (mushrooms, artichokes, giardiniera, gigantes plaki) and preserved lemon peel - Feta (Bulgarian, Greek) and other cheeses - Tzatziki and other spreads - A variety of fresh and packaged pastries (baklava, kourabiedes, koulourakia) and halvas - Olive oils, pomegranate molasses, carob molasses - Pita breads and pasta - Rose water - Amardeen (an apricot leather used to make a Syrian drink of the same name) Prices are quite fair and the owners + staff are kind, generous, gentle and gracious. When my 10-year old privately expressed interest in the orange peel to me, one of the owners overheard and offered her some to try. They didn't look at all askance when she delightedly opened various bins to sniff the beautiful aromas within. (I did teach her to waft the smells to her nose by hand a la chemistry lab, instead of sticking her head into each bin.) As much as I detest the areas around Port Authority -- it's one of the dirtiest, smelliest parts of NYC -- I do go out of my way for International Grocery and will for as long as we're both around.

A selection of bitters are popular for cocktails and quite a few Indian stores are now carrying them. I was here for Indian mangoes which were available at $60 a box. There were also Mexican mangoes that had an irresistible perfume. One should always buy mangoes that look and smell divine. Nerob from Bangladesh was the manager here and after chatting in Hindi told me that I was like his sister. Hallelujah!That's all one needs as then bargaining is easy. I am fairly good at this and can whittle off a dollar here and there. I bought two Kesar mangoes from India and two Mexican mangoes for a reasonable price. Both parties were satisfied. S&SC is clean, neatly stacked and a joy to enter. I was also given a samosa as I left. Highly recommended.

Apparently it's Lower Manhattan's only food cooperative. To be a working member it's a $48 annual fee, and they work a few hours a week. Included are discounts on items. Those not working can pay a $60 annual fee to get discounts on things. For sure there's a lot of healthy stuff in here. It's also good to buy local. The store has tons of environmentally safe products as well as things for vegans and vegetarians.
