I was close by and wanted a quick easy bite for lunch. Upon entering I saw the refrigerated section with pre-made sandwiches and wraps. I stumbled across this D'Agostino by default. Just traveling from manhattan back home to queens on my bike. I know my son needed some strawberries and I wouldn't make it back to queens in time, so this D'Agostino was open. I said wow let me go in see what I could I find . When I found some strawberries the strawberries were the most freshest I have ever smelled. You could smell the freshness right through the plastic container,the prices .This was my first time in this establishment and it was a good experience. The cashier was super cool. Stopped in for some goodies to stock our hotel fridge. This was a large market compared to the local bodegas, and the people were friendly enough. Vibe was a mix of a larger chain and a local shop, if that makes sense. For the size of the store the hot deli was relatively small and was closing down. Prices seemed higher than others, but the place was clean and efficient. read more

Sadly while I've had great service at the register, I've been followed around inside the store every time I am shopping as though I am a thief or stealing. I shop here frequently (more than I "check in") and this happened almost almost every single time. I always leave uncomfortable. Tonight after the pictured gentlemen followed me through the store then proceeded to come to the window and look at me after I paid acting like he was tying his shoe, I've decided to not return. Just a few minutes ago, i stopped by D'agostino on 38th and 3rd. I asked the guy stacking stuff at the meat section if he can point me to where the cheese trays are. He said "this is the meat section. You should be asking the people in front". So i looked for the cheese tray myself. At the checkout, i told the cashier that "your boy at the meat section is rude". He said sorry about that but never asked what happened. After checkout, i was stacking my stuff in my bag, and i saw the lady with the "Manager" pin so i asked her if she was the manager because i wanted to give a feedback about the guy at the meat section. She told me to wait and she took care of something else. After 5 minutes, i was not able to wait and I just left realizing that nobody seems to be interested in improving the services. read more

Not the worst, for sure. I think by Manhattan standards this isn't the most expensive grocery store in the borough, because they do have items that go on sale. It also has a convenient location and accepts AmEx, unlike many delis in the area. D'Ag has rotisserie chickens that are tasty when they're fresh but are too often dry. They have a pretty great beer selection, including craft beer, but be prepared to shell out. I would have given then three stars but the advertisements in the circulars, I don't get the creepy faces people are making! And rudely showing people eating? Ughh - makes me not want to go there. They are disgusting. Filthy, grey meat at high prices. In fact, the entire store is over priced, and management is simply nasty.

Everything about D'Agostino is terrible. There are no revealing qualities, I live right across the street and still choose to walk an extra 5+ blocks to go to any other grocery story in the area. First of all, everything is insanely overpriced. $50 at D'Agostino will barely fulfill 2 days of groceries. Take those $50 to Trader Joe's and you'll get at least a week. D'Agostino never restocks their shelves and everything is always expired. I've shown the manager expired cheese, bread, sour cream, etc... countless times and he apologize sand just throws it out. Seems to be a recurring issue. The deli counter is awful. Again, overly priced, tastes terrible and the workers there are painfully slow. It takes 20+ minutes for them to cut 2 orders of cold cuts, they're always talking on the phone and not paying attention to what you want, causing them to make mistakes on your order. I've never seen more than one checkout counter open at a time. If there are more than 3 people in the store (which there usually isn't, probably because everyone knows how bad it is) get ready to wait. I've had the rewards program for years and still have never seen a discount on any item I buy when they scan my card. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. This place might have the world's saddest beer selection.* I know this because beer is the only thing I ever buy here. (I have a few friends that live around the corner, and they only like me if I bring alcohol.) I really waffled back and forth between 2 and 3 stars for this review, so I will stick with "really" 2.5. As supermarkets go, this one is rather tiny and cramped, something you really don't expect from a place with relatively high prices. I think if there was more room and stuff was more spaced out, it would be a more comfortable shopping experience. I was here to buy mustard (preferably with horseradish) and they had Dietz and Watson, which was perfect, and honestly $2.99 wasn't a horrible price for it (it's Manhattan, midtown to boot). I also purchased some olives from their olive bar, but man, at $8.99/lb. I'm glad I only got a few! The olives were super tasty however, especially the ones soaked in garlic and olive oil and the ones with cheese stuffed inside. They're a *bit* salty, but if you have them with a salad you should be fine. The check out was fast and efficient. I didn't get any attitude or slow service. My take is that this is a good place in a pinch, but I wouldn't regularly grocery shop there for the sake of my wallet. read more

Not only is this place overpriced on EVERYTHING, but there are some of the rudest employees I've ever encountered. Today, I checked out with a few items (that of course totaled almost $50) and one of those items had a coupon ATTACHED to it. The woman didn't take off / scan the coupon, and when I realized after she checked me out - I told her she had missed the coupon. She made a face, asked me again, and I showed her the item with the coupon. She told me it was MY fault I didn't hand her the coupon, and proceeded to yell for the store manager. The manager came over, also gave a face, and took the coupon and walked away. As I walked away the cashier muttered about how it was my fault that I should have handed her the coupon, and basically blaming me and talking sh*t!!!! A simple, sorry I missed it, let's just fix it would have been JUST fine! Talk about lack of customer service! Or just being a nice human? I went over to the other cashier where the woman who was fixing it was begrudgingly getting me the money back, and every other employee just stared at me... grilling me... for just wanting the money off the coupon. Looked like there was a store manager or someone who was also observing the whole situation. The most UNFRIENDLY employees ever. No wonder these places are shutting down across the city. Go to Trader Joes, or Fairway, or ANY other grocery store, because there are more products, better prices, and 100000% better employees who actually give a damn about their shoppers. Popped in to grab a sandwich for my flight out of JFK (hate paying for airport food if I can). The deli looked decent enough, the guy behind the counter was in sloooo-mo, made a nice enough sandwich but don't be in any sort of hurry....yikes!?! And they had run out of lettuce? For crying out loud your a grocery store, the veggies are a stones throw away... Go get one! And je slaps the price label on our sandwiches without ziplocking the bags. Okay my Sammie's gotta keep for a few hours that ain't gonna work! Had to go back to my cousin's and fix it before the flight... Yeah yeah I'll go to a "real" deli next time... P.S. This place is a few hundred feet from Baruch. This is one of the markets in Kips bay. I only come here to buy drink on Mondays and Wednesdays this semester. There are three checkout lanes, which two are used at all times. The place also has a cooked food section next to the deli section. They also sell sushi, which I wouldn't buy. The fresh meat section only sells pre-packaged meat, unlike Asian supermarkets, where butchers will sell by request. read more

Like a few other reviewers on here it beats me why this place is still open. There are other far better supermarkets in the area....which is one reason they should strive to set themselves apart with great service and great prices. However they obviously do not care as their prices are way higher than their competition and their employees are extremely rude and belligerent. Today marked the very last day I will ever go in here after the disgusting level of service I received. Allow me to set the scene....one person at checkout had some kind of issue going on with their purchases that meant all three register employees (possibly one managerial assistant)were crowded behind that one register. Meanwhile no other registers were open...I mean usually we have only one open in this place anyway but at this point there is a growing line of people getting impatient. I go up to the person who appears to have some kind of managerial status (well she had register keys in her hand so who knows if that is a treasure only given to managers). I ask if they are going to open another register - at this point there are about 5 people behind me and one in front. She keeps her back to me and ignores me. So I ask again. Once more ignored. I say well I guess you must be deaf as well and having had quite enough of this astonishing lack of customer service I dump my stuff on the adjacent empty conveyor belt and walk out. Let me tell you I will NEVER return. Honestly they need new employees with a new attitude in here and whoever 'manages' them obviously does nothing. Utterly disgusted. read more

In general, I would say this supermarket is on the more expensive side, but it's conveniently located. However, if items are bought on sale, prices can be pretty good. Produce and meats are relatively fresh. Employees are friendly. Also, sign up for the rewards cards. There are some great coupons. I would categorize this in between Whole Foods/Food Emporium and Gristedes/Associated. It's a middle tier supermarket, but the location is pretty good. I don't understand why there's another Dag two blocks away though. read more

If there were a way to give truly negative stars, I would, for D'Ag's. Not because it's overpriced. Not because it's dark, dismal, cluttered, and hard to maneuver the aisles. Not because they don't carry a great selection of brands. What does this chain provide, other than location location location? But sullen, rude, angry clerks at the cash registers are the 'killer'. I assume D'Ags doesn't pay well - but if you don't want to be there, don't take it out on the customer (not me, usually some elderly person). This supermarket has deteriorated horribly over the years. Living across the street from it, it was our main source for everyday shopping. Now, I have to buy things online because they no longer carry many of the items we've bought there over the years. It is also badly maintained, they're always out of basic products like milk, butter, etc. They carry duplicates of many items like different manufacturers of the same bow tie pasta but no other variations. I had to buy Rotini on line. And the prices are outrageous. Not sure how they're still in business. Oh, I forgot, except for the sushi guy, all employees are beyond rude - they downright offensive and belligerent. read more

Apples/oranges, etc are charged by the pound and more often than not old stock that should have been thrown away ages ago. Who wants to pay $1.67 for an orange that has half dried up (it's happened before and it's gross). Cut fruit does not look fresh or better quality than a corner bodega. Thumbs down for ambience and decor. There's a reason people like going to Whole Foods. Average selection of grocery/household items at average prices. I like the rewards cards specials including the rotisserie chicken which is really great for sandwiches, chicken pot pie, etc. Everything else needs a big improvement or D'Ag NY might get swallowed up by one of the bigger, better faster, growing chains. read more

I have always preferred D'Agostino to the other markets. The quality and selection of food -from cheeses to meats, and especially the vegetable, are better (or were) than the rest of the regular supermarkets. Sales made these stores really well-priced. But I noticed In Spring that this place was virtually out of produce and shelf stocks were dwindling. I later learned there were financial problems with the company. Then I read through Crain's NY that Gristedes was helping them out in a shortfall. But I think there must have been a catch. And I don't shop much at Gristedes because their prices are the highest, while quality and selection of produce & meats the worst. Now I notice that all the things I like about D'Agostino's are disappearing. At the 80th street store, the butcher would cut my steaks to order. And at this store, in Midtown on Third, at least they had a butcher. Neither is true any longer. And they seem to have the same, or extremely similar, selection of goods at the store as Gristedes; with new, higher prices. And fewer sales. I would wait for sales on: seltzer, grapefruit juice, beer, and some fish & meat - I buy there weekly. They had a wonderful rack of craft beer bottles -buy a six pack, mix and match, and pay $11:99. Gone. Selection of beer: halved. Meat quality has gone down, even as there is no butcher just take whatever is prepackaged or... go to a butcher (or Fairways). That has been true of Gristedes for a long time. Now I find it at D'Agostino's. It's my belief that D'Agostino has become almost indistinguishable from Gristede's. And that means I won't shop there. I believe we have already lost D'Agostino as a fresh food market. I hope I am mistaken. I hope they get it together and find a way to compete with TJ and Fairways. I think at its best, D'Agostino was a local market with the best quality provisions, meats and vegetable. Now tilapia fish comes from China.They need to reformulate their services to make this work. For now, they are simply closer than other, better markets. I'll go there occasionally out of convenience and hope they restore their quality products at reasonable prices. read more

Prices are what you see at the 'grocery stores' in Manhattan. Expect to drop some dough if you fill up your cart but that's normal for this area. Plenty of variety for prepackaged and frozen foods but produce isn't outstanding. Variety in specialty loaves of bread. They do have some hot bar items, not a ton of choices though. Customer service wasn't as good as I'd hoped. The conversation I had with cashier is as follows: Cashier: d'ag card? Me: no C: do you want one? Me: no ...... I paid and left. Over all, a so-so impression of a high priced food store. Meh. If I'm in a bind I may stop through again but if I not I don't think I'll be missing anything. Just travel to the closest Whole Foods. I've never had a problem with the service at this location until today. My roommate has often complained about their disgruntled employees but since I never encountered them, i shrug it off. I just wanted some fruits to eat and the plums were on sale. Sale price was clearly labeled underneath the basket. I paid for it and realized they charged me the non-sale price. I inquired about it and the cashier was really nice. However, the customer service manager was a whole different story. She picked up my fruits and said "these are not plums." So i respond so what are they?? *cricket cricket*. Her retort was "well if you think they're plums i can give you the sale price." The point is they're are freakin plums and they are on sale so don't act like you're doing me a favor. She was so rude and I really hope she does get in trouble for this review. I will go ahead and file a complaint to the company directly as well because their "managers" seem to think it's a courtesy to honor their circular. read more

I do recognize and expect that my groceries won't be too cheap since I'm in NYC, but if they're not going to be cheap they'd better at least be fresh. I had some bad luck with basics for homemade chicken soup - celery wasn't crisp, etc. I also bought a loaf of bread and was excited they had 'daily fresh made' loaves of sourdough & others, but when I got it home I wasn't too impressed with the freshness of that either. While I've rated it so low, I'm sure I'll come here frequently as it's on of the closest place to me for groceries. I just won't be too happy about it. read more

As she was refunding me, she then went on to lie that they no longer carry that product and would no longer refund me. So I walked to the aisle to find the product and there it was. She continued to lie saying no- they do not carry it. And told me to go down a few blocks to return it to the other D'Agostino. ??? But it is right there fully stocked in the aisle. Clearly a crazy lady, so I left with the bad yogurt and I would never have anything to do with this store. How D'Agostino stays in business these days with TJ's just blocks away, who has ithe best prices along with incredibly nice, respectful customer service, is beyond me. read more

This might not be one of the more extensive supermarkets in the city, but they had everything I needed, and they were less than a 5 minute walk away, so I came here pretty often. Produce varied in price, selection and quality. They have a great selection of breads, including the glorious Mestemacher bread I adore, though I miss the times they were on the route of Tribeca Bakery distributers (the olive or cranberry bread.....mmmmm). Also a nice selection of grains (including a few varieties of couscous), fish, meat and poultry at decent prices. But best of all, fresh sushi, which, believe it or not, is actually really good. There's no need to go to this location if you live more than 10 blocks away, but for those of us who live(d) or work nearby, this is a real gem. read more

They swapped over to a non functional (at least with modern up to date browsers) ordering website. It used to be easy to reorder all the same groceries I always get, now I can't even order if i try. Something that was easy in my life is now more difficult. That in my book makes me actively want to see them go out of business, plenty of better, smarter, grocery companies looking to fill the niche. For grocery delivery I now use peapod.com, not as good as Dagnyc's old site, but FAR better than the useless crap they now have. read more
