Not being a local, it's hard to decide between the many curry restaurants lining Upper Tooting Road. So I took note of an award given to Spice Village on its window saying it was the favourite curry house of the locals. Not sure though about a picture of the local MP eating here with the stock of MPs being at a historic low. It feels like a family restaurant with a lot of functional tables in the dining area and in common with most of the Upper Tooting restaurants, an open kitchen. I loved watching the chef make my roti in the tandoor oven. A bad start as they didn't have onion bhajis, my first choice starter and the mango lassi tasted artificial, possibly from a bottle. However, the methi gosht had nice spicing - fenugreek I think being the predominant flavour - and the lamb was tender. The roti was light and a good foil. 3.5 stars but not quite enough to tip it into 4 stars at the moment. read more

Came here with some friends who used to live in the area and knew the best local joints. They told me about this place and that it was great value, had tasty food all in a simple location. They were right, except about the location. Since my friends have last been there they have totally renovated the place and now It's a stunningly fancy setting with long couches for seats, multiple chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and an intimate vibe. Don't be too intimidated though, you won't need a shirt and tie. Service was fast and efficient. Expect a wait if you don't make a reservation, so try to phone ahead. I ordered the peshwari naan which is sweet and stuffed with cream and a cocoon filling. It's really a meal on it's own, but I had it with the lamb korma, which was fantastic. It was served piping hot, and was deliciously sweet and nutty. Even with the fancy decor, prices are still reasonable with Nann between £2-3 and the dishes from £7 and up. My korma was £9. I look forward to returning and would recommend the place for anyone who would like a nice curry in a nice setting. read more

Awards from various newspapers and quality control bodies adorn the windows of this spacious Eastern/Indian restaurant. Get here now for all your favourite Indian meals like curries, masalas and tandooris. There are also quite a few dishes I haven't heard of before, but wouldn't be worried about trying in this well-run restaurant. The area around this place is lined with hundreds of restaurants offering a similar choice of meal. But Spice Village with its nice atmosphere and lovely smells sticks right out. You're going to have a taste bud spectacular in the hands of these capable, friendly chefs. read more

So, the other day we decided on eating out, as a family.. My mom wanted to go some place that had a buffet, but on a Sunday afternoon, in Tooting, Buffet menu's seem to be a bit scarce.. So Spice Village had been highly recommended, and we knew the food must be pretty good, seeing as our Aunt knows her stuff.. so eventually, we settled on Spice Village, and figured we'd give it a go. Al Mirage being the family favourite choice in Tooting, we thought we'd try something a little different. Fortunately, we weren't disappointed. We went around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, and the place seemed fairly quiet, with only a few diners in the now fairly large restaurant (they took over the store next door to them, knocked down the wall, and made the dining area twice as large). We decided to grab some seats near the back, seeing as it was freezing cold, outdoors, and we didn't fancy sitting near the windows. Must admit, the seats were nice and comfy, not the usual cheap, plastic or wood only chairs you find in some Indian/Pakistani restaurants. Three of us ordered Mango Lassis, and one of us had a Mango Milkshake (for the uninitiated, lassi's are made with yoghurt, whilst the shakes are made of milk). I enjoyed my lassi, though I didn't taste the shake.. Fortunately, there was enough of a lassi to last the meal, and make a sweet finish to the meal, so I didn't even think about dessert at the end ;) For starters, we had 2 Lamb Samosa's, 2 Fried Masala Fish, 6 Seekh Kebabs, and 2 Tandoori Nans. For our main courses, My mom had 1 Naan Kebab Roll (it's a cheaper way of getting 2 seekh kebabs +1 tandoori Nan + salad), my dad opted for 1 Chana Daal, I chose the Whole Murgh Chicken (my choice!) and my brother had the Lamb Biryani with a Chicken Jalfrezi. Before our starters came, we got a complimentary 'salad', that was just the usual of some lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and onion.. but it gave us something to munch on whilst we waited for the real food to come ;) The Fried Masala Fish was really good.. comparable, if not better than the fish at Al Mirage. The Seekh Kebabs were good too.. a little spicy, but personally I prefer it that way ;) The Lamb Samosa's were large, but unfortunately they'd been 'microwaved' to re-heat them, as they'd already been fried and were kept in the refrigerated display they have. My brother mentioned how at Al Mirage they appear to make the samosa's from fresh, as they come warm and crispy.. so be warned, ur samosa will come soft, not crispy here. Tandoori Nan's were a good size.. though it's really quite hard to get those wrong in any half decent traditional Curry House. They served them up, cut in half, which made it a little easier to share. Personally, I don't like it when they serve up Tandoori Nan's as whole, because inevitably you're going to have to break them up, to eat them, and why not just cut em into smaller pieces for the customers, and make it easier for them? Anyhow, the whole chicken was really nice.. Some good strong flavours, and it was nice and soft but cooked chicken. Not too tough, chewy or burnt at all, which is always good in my books ;) The Chana Daal was good, nothing to write home about.. and the Lamb Biryani, and Chicken Jalfrezi were ok.. Though I must admit I've had better at Al Mirage.. My mom get a particularly large Nan/Kebab serving, and wasn't able to finish hers off. And whilst we all enjoyed bits of everything, it was definitely more food than we could eat.. so we made sure to get the leftovers packed (and boy did they taste nice the next day!).. If I'd only eaten the chicken I ordered, I could have very easily finished it.. Maybe not entirely if I'd eaten it with Naan. But I had to sample everything else that had come, so I ended up only eating about a quarter of the chicken after all.. And we ended up ordering an extra Tandoori Naan, but again that was more just for me ;) Next time, we might try some different dishes, and see how they turn out.. I know that they're one of the few places that serve 'brain', and do it well. It's pricey, for sure, but if you're into that sort of thing, like my dad is, then you'll appreciate it here, seeing as they don't 'mush it up', but cook it in nice 'chunks'. (We've had brain from here, as a Take Out in the past, and it's definitely one to taste, if you've never tasted it before!) All in all, it was an enjoyable meal, and with the combination of nice clean facilities, a large dining space, and affordable pricing, I'll definitely be back here in the future. I'm from the states so my opinion may be hindered due to the fact that Indian/Pakistani restaurants here are on a whole other level (way better here than the states). Anyways, the starters here were amazing. The lamb chops were the absolute best dish we had, simply amazing. The kebab's were also very good. I liked their mango lassi and mango kulfi very much. We got full off of the starters so I cant really give any review of the main dishes. Only downside to this place is they don't serve alcohol. The service that night wasn't the greatest, I kept having to get their attention. For this reason, they get 4 stars. read more

This is amongst my favorite curry restaurants in all of Tooting, which is my favorite neighborhood for eating Indian and/or Pakistani food in all of London. Brick Lane has nothing on the Tooting Mile as far as delicious curry is concerned. Spice Village's atmosphere is nothing special. It is a huge open room with a long counter on one end, behind which all the food is cooked in plain site. A place doesn't really need atmosphere when the food is this good, though. Spicy, rich, fragrant, plentiful, and inexpensive. I usually walk in and waddle out. read more

Recently refurbished and a lot better than it used to be. The food here is very good unlike their other branch in Southall, and the service is a lot better too. The place is full of CCTV cameras in response to a spate of pickpocketing incidents at several restaurants in the area, and it's good to know they've taken measures to combat something like that, but a shame that it should be mentioned in the first place! Good quality food, reasonably priced and with good service to boot. A worthy alternative to Mirch Masala up the road if you happen to be in the area. read more

I've seen Spice Village grow from a small unit to what it is today and the food has gradually gotten worse as the restaurant grows. It's still alright, but it did used to be better. The staff are becoming more and more sexist women are often left to wait until they give up and go somewhere else (in fact they don't have any female staff at all). And, if you're not Indian, don't expect to be seated if it's busy regardless of how long you have been waiting. Have gone way downhill in the last few years. read more

I'm blown away by this restaurant - I had an issue with Deliveroo this evening and my delivery was taken by the driver to a wrong address, then Deliveroo refused to fix the problem because they were having system maintenance issues. I called the restaurant to let them know (I had called them in the first place) and they went above and beyond to fix the problem although it was no fault of their own. They remade and personally delivered the order, and even gave me a complimentary dessert! Not to mention the food is FANTASTIC. This is a tremendous restaurant serving great Pakistani cuisine. Service can be quite varied, it depends upon how close you are seated to the kitchen area but the food is great. Try the masalla fish, one of the restaurant's specialities washed down with some ice cold water. Parking during the evenings is easy to find around the corner and in front. I keep going back here; its one of those places I genuinely trust to serve good food. As a Londoner, thats important to me. read more

Seekh kebabs and naan are really good. The Curries are nothing special.

I went here yesterday and bought the bhindi gosht. 20 minutes into my dinner I began to feel sick but ignored it. When I got home I discovered I had food poisoning. The friend I took with me had it too, I knew it was from the bindhi gosht. I brought the left over home and my brother told me it smelled rotten. THEY HAD GIVEN US ROTTEN FOOD. The smell was unbearable. I didn't think much of it when I was the restraunt. I have been coming to this restaurant since it was only a small business, my brother was a valued customer, now he refuses to even spit in their direction. Do not eat here. You will probably get old rotten food and food poisoning. NEVER coming here again. read more

This is the worst restaurant I have been to in Tooting !!!!!!!! regardless of what the posters say !!!!!!!!! I can here from East London with my mother who is in a wheelchair and my wife. The disabled access is rubbish as the seats are so close together it is not easy to maneover between them, Once we overcame that problem, we ordered the food. The restaurant wasn't busy when we went on Sunday afternoon and still the food took 45 mins to come to the table. The mains were luke warm and the naans were burnt on the bottom. We started eating and found the curry was exactly what I don't know. It had a weird mix of masala in them and were very watery and spicy although we had asked for mild for my mother. We had finished and the waiter brought the plain rice that had been ordered. I don't know what the fuss is about, I think since this restaurant has been made bigger they have fallen back on the quality of food and service so my advise is AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. Al Mirage down the road has good disabled acess and the food is freshly cooked to order. Normally they still have the order on the table in 20 minutes even when they are busy. They are cheaper than Spice Village aswell. read more
