I have been a customer of the Fremont branch of Half Price Books for several years now. Because of…read moretheir extensive selection of books I have been able to read many hard to find books for a reasonable price. I have also ordered from them online with the same positive results. I have also sold many books and other items as well. They do not pay very high prices for the objects. I would check prices before selling there. However, the convenience (they take a very large range of items) can be worth it on its own. They can save you time by not having to try several places that may reject the items because they don't fit their exact customer preferences. Half Price Books is willing to take a lot of items because they are large enough to find a buyer. Finally, I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful every time I have been there so far.

I wouldn't bother bringing books in to sell! Store selection is great, staff is very polite & nice!…read moreThe bathroom is clean. However I brought in 7 large grocery bags of books & novels... most in like-new condition. Many by very famous authors. They wanted all but about 10 of the books & offered me $18 for the ones they wanted to keep.... Had I left them 'all' of my books, I was told they would have gone on their shelves or to other stores. Crazy to donate products for them to sell. Makes more sense just to donate them & let a non profit sell them...or donate to Friends of the Library... I waited well over an hour to hear the $18 offer LOL.... CRAZY ME!! But it's a very nice place to shop!

San Jose Magazine is nothing more than a yuppified advertisement for real estate agents and home…read morelistings. It seems I always see it in doctor's offices, dentist offices and in the lobby of hotels but nowhere else. The articles are generally short, dull and uninteresting about people and things that I have no ability to care about. A glossy cover and shiny, expensive photographs hide a dust bowl of information. No more wasting of time reading this fancy-looking publication for me no matter how bored I get waiting for my appointment to come. It will probably go belly-up soon anyway as it is hard to keep any local magazine going that doesn't allow 20 pages of escort ads in the back a la metro. San Jose is a great place to live and should just have something better. Don't cha think?

I grew up reading magazines in offices of all types. I still spend far too much on magazines…read more(though less than Linda does for the September issues of all the fashion rags) and I read them all the time. When I was living in Boston, my Mom bought me a subscription to Boston Magazine (a great mag) and to San Jose Magazine. Sadly, it's never been anywhere near as compelling. The problem isn't that San Jose Magazine isn't readable, the articles are OK, the photos tend to be really nice, and they tend to give at least some coverage to all the events that I give a care about. On the other hand, it's also a crappy selection of articles that hardly covers the way we in SJ live and work. It's targeted to a more upscale crowd, but that's not SJ and it's not what's interesting about the city. The presentation is pretty, but the content is not what it should be.
