I wouldn't bother bringing books in to sell! Store selection is great, staff is very polite & nice! The bathroom is clean. However I brought in 7 large grocery bags of books & novels... most in like-new condition. Many by very famous authors. They wanted all but about 10 of the books & offered me $18 for the ones they wanted to keep.... Had I left them 'all' of my books, I was told they would have gone on their shelves or to other stores. Crazy to donate products for them to sell. Makes more sense just to donate them & let a non profit sell them...or donate to Friends of the Library... I waited well over an hour to hear the $18 offer LOL.... CRAZY ME!! But it's a very nice place to shop! read more

Low buy back prices for books - I get it, they need to make a buck- but the staff here aren't friendly and are quite obnoxious. I rather donate my books to goodwill (which i've done) - All my books I do donate are either pristine (due to me buying duplicates at times due to collection) or in very good condition. I ordered a book online. It was supposed to be shipped from here to CA. I get sent a UPS tracking number. It doesn't work or get updated for several days. I go to my local store and they can't find the order at all. I try to reach out to customer service and I get told it was shipped to Texas via USPS and it's my responsibility to go find it. The continue to dodge the question as to why it was sent there or to offer a refund. So here we are shaming them online because there are no consequences. read more

This store has CDs, vinyl, DVDs, and books. It's well organized and not so big that you get overwhelmed. It's the right size to spend an hour or so browsing. I always seem to find something here. I have been a customer of the Fremont branch of Half Price Books for several years now. Because of their extensive selection of books I have been able to read many hard to find books for a reasonable price. I have also ordered from them online with the same positive results. I have also sold many books and other items as well. They do not pay very high prices for the objects. I would check prices before selling there. However, the convenience (they take a very large range of items) can be worth it on its own. They can save you time by not having to try several places that may reject the items because they don't fit their exact customer preferences. Half Price Books is willing to take a lot of items because they are large enough to find a buyer. Finally, I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful every time I have been there so far. read more

HARDCOVER FINDS When it comes to books Amazon has been a great resource to find books that are hard to find especially hardcover books that usually are the first edition. The main problem with Amazon is that you can't see the condition of the book. When a book you order from Amazon states it's "old feels like new condition" you might be disappointed when you get the book. When it comes to history books I prefer hardcovers over softcovers. I don't know why, but I guess it's preference. I guess one of the reasons is that history books tend to be longer than novels. When it comes to reading history books the cover can have wear and tear. Some of the history or biography hardcovers I purchased through this location were "American in Paris" by David McCullough, "Colonel Roosevelt" by Edmund Morris, and "Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt" by H.W. Brands. One hardcover book I had difficulty finding was Ron Chernow's first edition of "Hamilton", which inspired hip hop musical play that won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama. One of the workers at Half Price Books was able to retrieve this hardcover at another Half Price Books in the East Bay and had it shipped to this location. Speaking of David McClullough I also purchased two of hardcover books "John Adams" and "1776" on Monday Juneteenth of last year. Recently I purchased a biography of Andrew Jackson written by Jon Meacham that won a Pulitzer Prize Biography Award. Also from this location I bought the hardcover of Anthony Bourdain's memoir "Kitchen Confidential". I do prefer hardcover books whether they are history or fiction. As of right now I haven't bought a hardcover novel from Half Price Books. If there is a hardcover novel like to read, I'll buy it from this location. read more

She embodies everything good about good customer service. She is friendly, patient (I had six boxes of books), efficient and made several excllent suggestions as to how to process my book buy-back. Clean and cool looking place with nice people BUT... As a seller, it was almost insulting. We brought in a couple hundred books and at least 10-20 books that we brought in, they had for sale used at $6.99 and above. For all 200ish books they offered 6.74. 6 cents a book is what they will try to pay. I'm sure I can sell them on my own and make way more than that. The lady was really nice so I didn't want to tell her it was an insulting offer. I took my books back and went home. Probably spent more than they offered on gas getting their and going back home. Half Price Books is located at the Fremont Hub where parking is easy. And it's nice to browse for actual printed books. There used to be a Barnes & Noble and a Borders here in Fremont, but they unfortunately closed a long time ago. I love stopping by here because I never know what I'll find. It's always a surprise. Don't come here with something specific in mind. It's a good place to stop for gifts, or even a gift card (which I get for my SIL so she can find something she likes here). They don't just have books.They have a nice selection of journals and jigsaw puzzles. There's also console video games, DVD movies, and music on vinyl and CD. While it's nice to have a bookstore here in Fremont, I feel HPB could be a bit better. Here's why: Usually when I am trying to a find a book that's new or says it's available on their website, I can find it but this isn't the case usually in the store. I appreciate at least that this store is easy for me to get to: The associates say they can order and transfer the merchandise over to this store, which is fine, but it would be helpful to actually have more inventory. I think they could have a better selection of teen books, which I still enjoy reading, even though I am older now, in my 30s. It just doesn't have the same feel as say Barnes and Noble as there's not much seating and typically other bookstores have more of a selection. I miss Barnes and noble and borders at times. If you sell your items here, good luck because they seem to pay you very little even for brand new things. I brought in a brand new game and was literally offered $2... umm.. what? At that price, I just decided to keep it. SMH. Also there can be long wait times sometimes for buying back items and you have to stay in the store the whole time. read more

I recently got a record player which means buying more records! I figured, I don't really need new records and want to give a second, third, etc. life to other records. So I decided let's go to Half Price Books to see what they had for vinyls. I wish Rasputins still existed but they're a bit further away these days. L O C A T I O N Half Price Books is located in the Fremont Hub. It's not a busy place these days, so finding parking is not bad at all. I N S I D E Once you walk in, you get that waft of old book smell...you know that smell. It's the same smell I get when going into the Fremont Main Library. Everything is bright and well organized. They do have new books when I was walking in but I guess at a slight discount? Maybe I'm wrong. It's been a while since I've really bought books. The records were right smack in the middle. Don't just look at the ones on the upper shelves. There are also vinyls on the bottom shelves. I didn't really walk around the place too much as I was specifically going there for records. So I did see that they have board games too. They did have a good selection of items but yes some of them were quite higher priced than I was expecting. We did stumble on an instrumental/band record that unfortunately had holes in the sleeve so the record peeps out. It was only $4 but you can see someone sold this for $0.50 somewhere as it had a small sticker on it. Maybe it was a garage sale or something. Anyways, being the newb, I just gently wiped the record and started playing it on my new record player so you can hear all the pops and gravel in the record which is lovely but I didn't realize...whoops it may be hurting my stylus. So yes, I do hope they clean their records but I don't think so. I had to stop using my record until I go and buy more accessories. Clearly this will be an expensive hobby. S E R V I C E We easily paid at the register and they were quite happy there. It was nice! O V E R A L L I'll definitely be back when I'm more well versed in being a better audiophile. I do love a good book but don't like buying them as I just read them once and move on. But if you do read to keep, good options here! My second time selling stuff here...I never expect much when it comes to selling. However... It was taking longer than expected and the associate that initially checked me in even said it wouldn't be long. But I noticed the associate was running around taking care of other things as they got busy. An hour passed so I decided to check in as I had to get going. While doing so another associate just got in saying that he was taking over. He had said "I'm not sure where she left off but should be almost finished" I mentioned that it's fine and if possible could just take an offer for whatever she had checked already. And all of a sudden he wraps it up and gives me an offer for EVERYTHING. So he went from not knowing where she left of to "yeah she checked everything" I kept asking to clarify that she had gotten through everything and he wouldn't give a straight answer and just said "yeah we'll take care of everything". The original associate helping me happened to come back and she even looked confused as he was handing me the offer. Since I had to get back to work I just laughed it off and said okay. Confident this guy just came in and maybe he felt offended by me asking for an update for some reason and just screwed me over with the rest of my stuff. At least that was all the clutter I wanted to get rid of from home and won't need to be coming back to sell anymore I guess. read more

They buy and sell books. You sell and they buy for cheap. You may bring in 20 books and get $5 for itc, what a rip off . They buy your books for so cheap then they sell it for more. I sold my books here and came back to see the prices on them and it's crazy how much they sell it for. Don't recommend to go here to sell your books at all. They said they buy it depending on how old the books are. SMH you're better off just donating it to goodwill just around the corner. read more

What a cute little store next to Party City / Target. It doesn't seem much on the outside, but they actually have quite a lot of books. Besides books, they also have DVDs, games, comics, and vinyls. And a big counter to sell your books as well - I didn't personally learn how their buying works but I'm sure I will if I need to sell some in the future. The store also seems well maintained, the atmosphere is chill, and overall the customer service I received was great. The prices are also decent, for the conditions of the books. Half Price Books is a gem! In this day & age, there aren't too many real bookstores left. I love going into a bookstore and browsing. I remember my days at UC Berkeley and how much I loved half price books on Shattuck Ave! To my surprise, I stopped by the Hub today and happened to drive by. Today I brought in three boxes of CDs, Cassettes, and about 20 books to their Fremont store today to sell. I didn't count the number of CDs, but there were dozens of which many were classical and never used. The CDs and cassettes were in perfect shape and seldom if ever played. Some were still wrapped. I should have read the reviews here, because it's true that they pay pennies on the dollar or less. They state in advance that you need to give them an ID and phone number, which I did, but I'm opening myself up to identity theft, because identity thieves now have two of the three bits of information needed for theft, which are date of birth and driver's license number, along with my name and address, of course. I was instructed to browse the store while they sorted through what I had, and you have to stay in the store because they call your name when they're ready to make you an offer. Of course, the object is that you'll browse the shelves and buy something while you're waiting. When I was called back, I was floored to be offered $13.51 for what I brought in, which was truly insulting and likely not enough to buy one decent book from them. However, I didn't want to drag everything back home, so told them to just keep everything and I didn't want their money. They said I needed to take their receipt and cash out in order to leave anything, so I just took the receipt and walked out. It's demeaning and I'll be damned if I'm going to grovel for chump change. I don't know if they pay for their merchandise from any other source other than individuals coming in to sell their personal property, but for those like me who come off the street to sell, I can't conceive of any other business that essentially gives nothing for their stock, so that each sale is virtually all profit. It borders on unethical. With this kind of business plan, it's not surprising that "Half Price Books's annual revenue is $255.6M" according to Zippia.com. Needless to say, this is the first and last time I'll be patronizing this company. I would have been better off donating or recycling rather than providing some of this company's inventory for almost nothing. read more

Great used bookstore if you're buying. Insultingly low offers if you're selling. I had a set of The Art of Computer Programming which sells for $175 used, and they offered $12 for it, which is around 6% of the used price. Expect more like 3% of the used price if it's not brand new, or if they have several copies of a book. The only reason to sell here is if you value the space the books were taking up more than the books themselves, and wanted to do slightly better than just donating them all. Staff were nice, they don't have any room to haggle and don't set the policies. read more

Today I came out of the store fuming! I asked why is it necessary to see my ID and for them to have my phone number just in order to sell them a single book, and met with absolute hostility on the side of the people at the counter, with the result that they refused to buy my book! If the customer has no right to ask questions, and then can also be refused service, something in their personnel training is lacking. Their rigidity and hostility was contrary to common sense and common courtesy. I have sent the company a message via their FB page, asking for an apology, but so far to no avail. read more

2.5 stars I have been to this location a few times now. It is easy to get to and no problems finding parking. The selection of books that they carry is decent. I can always find something that I am interested in reading. They do not give you much for books so if that is what you are looking for I do not suggest selling here. The lady who helped me with my books I was selling was nice and friendly. The other 3 employees I interacted with while here were all disengaging and not very helpful. I used to love this place, this place used to be great. But not anymore..... they used to value customer services, but not tonight, definitely not towards someone who is Asian, and someone who is a Christian looking to purchase a Bible .... Let me tell you my story, my experience as of today 05/01/2021. I arrived today at approximately 756pm. There was a lady in the storefront blocking me from access. She spent approximately two minutes to inform me that store was about to close at 8pm. I told her I was there to pick up a bible, I noticed she became very hostile. The lady was very reluctant to let me in, after about two minutes she let me in the store at about 758pm. I went to the back of the store turned left corner, picked 3 King James Version of bible. I heard the announcement over the speaker that the store is closed. So I hurried myself to the register. Soon I arrived, I was going to do a final check up to make sure the Bible was in a legible condition. However the lady's work there pressured me to leave, made constant suggestions to ask me come back tomorrow..... Never have I ever felt being rushed and kicked out from the store. To me this is not how you operate a business, especially how you treat someone. I am a firm believer to support locally owned businesses, since the pandemic. But this place showed me hostility towards Christians. I will not be coming back here ever !!! Beware this is a anti Christian place !!!!! If you are a Christian follower they will kick you out !!! Half Price Books was a surprise and a delight. the Fremont store is the biggest and best stocked HPB i've ever visited. they actually had a few books i wanted to buy. there were also hundreds to thousands i wouldn't. -found 2 Native American classic, Howard Zinn's People's History & Takaki's "a Different Mirror". they have books of every genre plus children's books, movies, & dvd's. lots of books look interesting but i wouldn't buy them. do ur research before shopping here. 1/2 price is great for classics but not for pulp fiction..... 3.5 stars.
