We had a really great experience renting at Spindrift! The owner gave us a quick tutorial on how to use the boards, which was super nice!

Our family did a day trip to the sand dunes from our campsite at Lathrop, and we were looking for sand boards to rent on the way. Spindrift is a cute, colorful shop right on the main street through Blanca. We ordered them online a few days before, but there were plenty of boards when we arrived. The large group in front of us seemed to be walk ins and received boards with no issue. Amy greeted us and got us set up with our boards and sled. We had three different style of boards for different riding experiences. She gave us all fun "jobs" on the dunes and thorough instructions. We all agreed the world needs more Amys. She is really pleasant, welcoming, and a wonderful individual. The dunes are another 30 minute drive from Blanca, but well worth it to get the quality and variety of boards and sled versus what you can get at the store right by the Dunes. The prices were half of that store and the boards are superior in every way. Useful tip Amy gave us - wear socks with your sandals or crocs. That sand temperature in the summer is no joke and can burn your feet fast. Just rock the socks! I highly recommend Spindrift to anyone looking to do sand boarding or sledding! read more

What an amazing experience did we have visiting this awesome place. My friend is visiting for a few days and we decided to go to the Grand Sand Dunes to explore, and while we were at it we decided to experience sand surfing. To sand surf you require special equipment so we stopped here to get what we needed. Little did we know, we got way more than just the equipment. The beautiful being that greeted us (the owner herself!)at the store was so warm and inviting. She gave us pointers on how to sand surf, she explained the whole process of how to properly use the board, the waxing method, lots of kisses from Bella (the cute doggy that was with her), and just an amazing vibe. The value of the gear rental is very affordable, but the value of the whole experience has no price. What an excellent experience! I was headed to Gear Sand Dunes for the first time and always saw people try these sandboards out there! I searched Google and this place had great reviews. Amy (90%sure that's her name) owns the business and has a true passion for the sport. There's plenty of styles of sandboards to try, with all types of widths and shapes. They have a great variety of sand sleds too for an easy ride! I'd recommend renting one of each if you're new to the dunes. That way, you can have some fun and relax on the sled too. It's only $20 each per day, no matter what you want! They give you wax, and definitely remember to take it on the dunes! Unlike skiing or boarding, the sand wears the surface so much that you need new wax every five rides. Otherwise, it's so slow you'll walk back to the car to get it and have fun again. The shop has a small gift shop and a great location along the main drag in Blanca. Go out and have fun! The dunes are at perfect temperature this month, and before the summer heat. read more

Great place to rent sand boards! Amy is super quick to answer all of your sand board questions. You can make a reservation beforehand which is really nice vs. showing up at the Sand Dunes only to find out that there are no boards left or just ones that look like they have seen better days. She's a fantastic combination of knowledge and kindness, so we were totally prepared to both sandboard and respect the environment. This place was so friendly and helpful! When calling to make a reservation, I received tons of information about what to expect, what to wear, etc. Staff also took the time to know what every person's experience level was to suggest appropriate rental equipment. Then, when we arrived, we were greeted with such enthusiasm and tons more information on getting out on the dunes and having a successful time. Multiple types of sleds and boards are available, and all equipment was in great condition. Wax for the boards was provided as part of the rental. The location is great coming in to the dunes from the East and I-25. After returning the gear, we were given recommendations on what to do based on our next travel stop. Super convenient place to rent sand boards on the way to the dunes especially if you're coming from Santa Fe or Taos. Unlike other rental shops, this one has many varieties of boards and sleds available so we could try many different types. The owner, Lisa, is super knowledgeable about sand boarding and it was great to ask her all the questions we had!
