The church embraces the progressive views Mill Valley is known for and sees its role to pursue social justice and community (current focus is housing policy, sanctuary movement). Its progressive theology is also reflected in its series of speaker forums which occur periodically on Sunday evenings. They also hold superb concerts in the sanctuary which was built in the Arts & Crafts style by a Tam High teacher and students beneath towering redwood trees. The open-mindedness of the congregation and ambitions to pursue social justice is inspiring.

I attended St. Raphael School in San Rafael where I received First Communion'. Thereafter I received Communion regularly at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I don't remember that we attended but it must have after mid-morning as it was very crowded with overflow standing at the back by the choir loft. In 1951 I often stood with my uncle in the back. We moved to the City in the summer of 1952 where I attended church and school at St. Thomas Apostle out in the Richmond District.... I have never forgotten going to Sunday Mass at Our Lady. The philosophy of Hillside is that all are welcome. No matter where you are on your faith or even if you're a nonbeliever, you are welcome at this church. It is free and open to all those who come through it's doors. This is a place where you can ask the hard questions or the ones you felt perhaps embarrassed to ask. If it's not for you then okay, no worries. We just want to make sure you ghve a welcoming, safe place to explore. The church leadership is top notch. The pastor, Steve Pridemore, is a gifted orator and has insightful sermons. After every sermon, I am always fulfilled and almost always learn something new. The congregation is friendly and diverse. Also noteworthy is that there are about 300+ members which probably makes it one of the largest churches in Marin and certainly Southern Marin. It's also an active church with tons of different ways to get individuals and families involved. The church has an annual trip to a Mexican orphanage that the church has supported for several years. The church has several active small groups that enable the congregation to, as the name implies, focus on topics and conversations among smaller groups of people. This can be huge when somebody is trying to become more actively involved and engaged with the church community and create deeper relationships with the other individuals in the church. Hillside also organizes several retreats throughout the year and participates in the annual leadership Summit. I've personally been to the leadership summit and one of the men's retreats and can attest to how awesome both of these things are. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer within the church for the two Sunday services. Volunteer opportunities include ushering, working in one of the many childcare rooms, playing an instrument or singing in the band, working the projector, working with the sound system, getting the coffee ready and all the treats before the congregation shows. I am likely missing several responsibilities here, but you get the point. The church building is made up of two buildings. Both of the buildings, the parking lot area, the playground, and the general landscaping are all nice and tidy. So many churches I've seen have gone failed to keep their church and the surrounding grounds nice and tidy, but hillside has not. There are two buildings to Hillside - the uppermost main building and the lower Annex building. If you were visiting for the first time, be sure to go to the uppermost main building. It's pretty obvious, but just want to be sure you know which one to go to. The doors are all wide-open Sunday mornings and you can pretty easily tell where to go. Still curious? Ethan introduced to him i was met with an unfriendly and cold greeting. My impression was that he was aiming to succeed the current pastor (which happened soon) and treated anyone, visitors or member as a potential threat to his objective to take over the church leadership. Bad start. I left my handbag there and I went back to pick it up. When a woman member handed to me I could tell it was opened and searched. I had prescription pain medicine to deal with horrible nerve spasms that occur in my vertebrae more and then. She let me know that she found it and became instantly judgmental and critical as if I was some addict. I was deeply offended by the hostility she display and vile criticism she hurled at me -- a decent Christian with seminary training and wide experience in the church on many levels. Afterwards, i never heard from them again and needless to say, I never had an desire to return to this place, especially with Pridemore who lived up to his surname in personality. Very unfortunate. I suggest Martin Covenant or New Life for a genuine loving church true to Jesus.

But I feel what has stood out to me most about the Grace Church of Marin community is that the people are sincere "brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ." Just one of many examples...when both of our newborn children had to go into the pediatric ICU for medical scares, the outpouring of love, prayers, meals delivered to us, and reassurance that God was with us were invaluable blessings to us at a time when we felt our most vulnerable.
