FYI- Splashers is now called Kona Snokeling trips... There seem to be a variety of ways to snorkel with the Manta Rays and a lot of choices. Another discussion board member recommended this company to us on a thread and we went for it. So glad we did! Meet up spot worked well. We met the captain (with a great sense of humor) and our tour guide of sorts (who just loves the mantas) and we were off. We waited out in the bay for sunset- it was beautiful. I did not know quite what to expect- but everything they did made us feel safe. We felt well taken care of and had great instructions on what to do. You could hear other tours in the distance that sounded a bit chaotic. Of course we saw manta rays! We saw a bunch of them! What an experience! When I booked the 6:30 trip I was initially worried that maybe it was too early and we would not see any. It was not the case- Of course we saw manta rays! We saw a bunch of them! What an experience! And as someone who is prone to sea sickness- I was AOK. The boat moves fast, good breeze and well, the high of seeing so many mantas kept the nausea away. :) 5 stars for these guys. The only thing I wish is that there was an opportunity to by some of their merch after the ride. I think the store may have been closed. Anyways- don't hesitate. Book with them! read more

Mike, the owner, was very great to deal with for a night manta ray dive. Our group of 18 was able to book on fairly short notice. We had a captain that knew how to get our group, ages from 4-76 safely to and from the site while having a great time together. Not everyone went in the water of course, but being together for this adventure let us all enjoy it. Those that did get in the water were in for a special treat as several of the mantas were feeding doing basically backflips right under us. Amazing experience and Mike's crew were awesome making sure everyone had a good time. We'd definitely use Splashers again! read more

Me and two others In My group did the A.M. snorkeling tour... Amazing! They went out their way to make sure everyone had an amazing time! The trip down was a bit long as well as the trip back.. on their defense we were stopping a lot for dolphin viewing and whale watching so that was pretty sweet! This was a snorkeling trip I chose mainly due to its price... and it was worth every penny! I left a good tip because they earned it.. I'd highly recommend this tour! These guys are super good at their jobs and fun to be with. My dad and I are experienced swimmers but my mom cannot swim and is very uncomfortable in the water. They were able to accommodate her completely so she could enjoy snorkeling the coral reef. We saw tons of dolphins and were able to swim just feet away from where they were. I definitely suggest you get out there and swim with the wild dolphins and Splashers is an excellent choice to do it with! read more

Is that a dolphin, a shark, no... it's manta rays!!! Talk about manta rays everywhere! Night manta snorkeling is a MUST thing to do on the Big Island. I swear if you don't do it, you will think about it the rest of your life and be old and still feel guilty about how you didn't do it that one time. First of all, this company is one of the few on the island that does night manta ray snorkeling on a Sunday. I called about gajillion (yes that's a word in my book) companies, before settling for this one since it was voted number 1 on tripadvisor. They also offer a kamaina discount, which is way better than the military one. Thank you for the moolahs in my pockets Splashers! Our tour was from 6-7:30 p.m., but I recommend you get there by 5:30 because that's when they fit you into your wet suit, flippers (not that you need any, you fish swimmer you), and snorkeling gear. Now I thought all snorkeling gear was the same, but no, my face is too round and small to fit into "regular" people's gear. I had to have a child's gear.. yes fitted to perfection!!! That water was repelling off of my snorkel gear... FTW!!! The boat itself is TINY, holding maybe about 20 people. A sweet little intimate experience I'd say. Tiny also means you're going faster than light on the water. If you want to throw up and have the best time of your life, sit near the front of the boat. If you enjoy your life and don't want to be shark meat, sit near the back of the boat. Splashers take you on an adventure that is unforgettable, starting with the boat ride. Once you get to your location (~15 min exhilarating boat ride), you wait until sun goes down to begin the adventures. I went with many people that didn't know how to swim so they give you life vests and noodles to prep you for the snorkeling. They also go over safety and what to do when you see manta rays. You're supposed to keep your legs straight.. no matter how many times they say this, there's always that one person that can't seem to grasp the concept of what 'straight' means. After a lecture on safety blah blah, you wait to hear the first "woohoo", that's when you should get in the water to checkout the manta rays. And I did hear a "woohoo" (not to be mistaken with the woohoo girl on HIMYM)! As soon as we got into the water, I saw manta rays. They are just breathtaking!!! One was so close to me that I could touch it!!! You're guaranteed to see them. My only qualm was that many of the other snorkelers stayed, while we swam away from them to our boat to go back home :(. I thought it was short (hence only 4 stars) and wish we could've stayed another half hour. The guide also helped every non-swimmer become acclimated and took the time to make sure they had a good time as well. Very sweet and attentive. Once on the boat, you could either take your wet suit off like an idiot or keep it on because it'll keep you warm until you dock again. I kept mine on as I drank hot cocoa and nibbled on some granola bars. I was quickly all warm and fuzzy!!! One of my other fav part of this tour was the ride back to the dock. They turn off all the lights on the boat so you're left with just you and the night sky. It felt like you were on top of Mauna Kea looking at the night sky. It was beautiful and amazing! I have got to say I am quite disappointed. I made reservation for our family of 5 on a Friday for a snorkeling trip on Sunday. On Saturday I called to cancel, as I was unaware of other plans my son, who was visiting Kona with us (he flew in from Japan) had for me. I asked them to refund my money. They told me that since I had made the reservation through a booking agency they could not authorize a refund. I called the booking agency and they said they had to get the approval of Splasher's in order to provide a refund. They contacted Splasher's and I was denied the refund. I decided to book another trip with Splasher's for the next Tuesday for two members of our family. I was hoping they would at least apply part of our previous payment to this event, which they did not. I was also told that they had to cancel the previous snorkeling trip all together as they only had two other people and couldn't "afford" to take a trip with just two people. BUT THEY KEPT MY FRIKKIN MONEY, so they did not need to punish the other people! I understand their policy, and even gave them the benefit of the doubt by sending two of our family on the snorkeling event on Tuesday, but I feel they flat out lied to me at least 2-3 times. There are MANY options for snorkeling adventures in Kona. I would highly recommend you look for other options and do not book an event with Splashers. read more

My first ever snorkeling experience and I had an awesome time with these guys on the Dolphin Snorkel. The captain gave our group a thorough breakdown of the experience at the beginning and lead us out to Captain Cook, which is apparently the best reef in Hawaii Islands for snorkeling. I loved that we made multiple stops along the coast to check out different areas in addition to seeing dolphins close up. When we got to that reef, there was plenty of time to explore and enjoy the sights. Light snacks and drinks were provided as well to keep us fueled. I'd highly recommend these guys to anyone visiting the Big Island. read more

I booked the late night Manta Ray Snorkel and it was a amazing experience! I wasn't sure about snorkeling at night but was glad I overcame this and went! The plankton didn't cooperate for us and seemed to be more plentiful on the ocean floor, but we did have 3 close encounters that included 2 barrel rolls! Our hosts were very nice and the ride out/back on the "zodiac" raft was smooth - much faster than a normal snorkel boat. I highly suggest using Splashers for the Manta Ray snorkel!! read more

They took us in last minute when we had a mix up and our agency booked us on a wrong date. Captain Hope was knowledgeable, fun and really knows her way around the sea. We saw a turtle even before we left the marina and saw a pod of dolphins and the snorkeling at Captain Cook was amazing. Such a great experience with Captain Russon (sp) and Megan! We got killer pics and vids of the majestic manta rays and such an informative session while being in the water. We met at the harbor at around 1900. Be sure to show up early to get a wetsuit and mask fitted, as well as use the bathroom before you head out on your excursion. After about a 20 minute boat ride out closer to the airport, they set up shop with a blue LED lit board that attracts plankton which in turn attracts the manta rays for a spectacular 30 minute manta ray show. The boat ride was a trip and def kept us on our toes. It's an exciting 30 mph ride. Put your feet up and let the boat toss you up as you stare out into the darkness. Bring a Go-pro and snap some pics and vids in the water while you watch these amazing creatures feed on the tiny critters. It's a also a great excursion to see bioluminescent plankton shoot up as the boat cuts through the water. Would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the Big Island! read more

We returned and went for the late manta trip and recommend it over the earlier one. You are more likely to see mantas because the earlier trips can let the captain know which location had the most mantas. We also did the snorkel trip. We saw hundreds of dolphins, a couple of whales, and them lots of fish and corral. Dre was great. He checked on everyone to help ensure they had a good experience We will go again. read more

I want to start this review off by saying the crew at Splashers saved our vacation! For weeks, I had been planning a relaxing girls trip to Hawaii with my mother and grandmother. Day one, nirvana quickly turned to nightmare as Travelocity decided to screw up the names on our airfare, costing us over $1300 in additional ticket costs just to get us to HI. To top it off, after being separated for 12 hours due to those ticket changes, we find out Travelocity booked our Manta Ray snorkel experience on the day we were flying in, shocking my already frustrated mother as she anxiously waited for me to fly into Kona. Jillian with Splashers was so empathetic to our plight that she went ahead and booked us for the original scheduled date, no questions asked, the catalyst that turned our trip around from Hell to Heaven. On the day of our excursion, my mother and I had a BLAST. Both Jillian and Capt. Charlie were fun and personable (coincidentally fellow Dallas Cowboys fans so they get extra points there), very knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, and just as excited for our experience as we were. In fact, I think Jillian was more anxious than us about seeing a manta, and when our sweet girl finally showed up underneath our raft, searching for plankton, she took our breath away. The boat ride alone was fantastic, Capt. Charlie making sure we had a view for a perfect Hawaiian sunset, and Jillian had a great eye for picking a drop off spot as it seemed like we may have been one of two groups out of the bunch that actually had manta company. My only regret was that I didn't bring cash to tip (BRING CASH, you'll want to tip), but luckily thanks to the Internet gods I was able to Venmo Jillian directly so she and Capt. We had a group of 8 go on the Manta Ray Snorkeling Adventure. One group went at 1730, and the other for the Night Snorkel at 2000. Both were a total waste of money! Uggh! We got the military discount (thank goodness!!), which was $85.00. The description on their website of this excursion is very misleading! We thought we would be given a wet suit and snorkel equipment to swim around with these massive creatures. Nope. We took a boat out about 20 minutes, and then were told to jump off and hold on to a surfboard with PVC pipe attached to it. It had a bright light shining down in the center, which apparently attracts the rays. We were not allowed to move. We had to lay flat, face down in the water. No touching, no swimming- just staring and getting cold. The first 5 minutes was interesting because we saw two large rays. We saw one other one, but that was it for the entire 40 minutes. Boring! This company states they are the ONLY company that does the Night Snorkel. FALSE! There were several other boats and people out there, all of which were crowded together so somebody's leg/arm/foot/head are always hitting you. Also, there was 12 of us and we all had to hang on to one surfboard which was uncomfortable and cramped. The other boats we saw out there had provided there guests with fresh pineapple, drinks, and other refreshments. This company does no such thing. Do yourself a favor and just skip this, "Top Ten Things to Do Before You Die," crap and spend your money elsewhere. If you must do it, go with a company that provides food and drinks at least! read more

Echoing what most others are saying here: Splashers, via Captain Mike and our guide Luisa, was a great choice! No complaints; fantastic service. We did some sightseeing from the boat, and also snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins around some other parts of the island. Regarding dolphins: Mike and Luisa were great about walking us through the do's and dont's. I understand that the Big Island is the only Hawaiian island that still allows swimming with the dolphins in certain locations (i.e., not in the sanctuary around the Captain Cook area). I sure hope nobody in the future ruins the privilege by abusing the experience (think, kayak bans). Honestly, I have a problem with "swimming with dolphin" attractions in captivity, especially where people grab their fins! I was honored (and honestly moved in a spiritual way) to swim among the dolphins in the wild. It was one of the highlights of my trip. read more

Our group of 18 decided last minute to go snorkeling with this company. We found their ad in a magazine and gave them a call late at night. Lucky for us, they were able to accommodate our large group with our own boat the next day. Mike and Zach (and another guy, I forgot his name) were super friendly and very helpful with us. Swimming with the dolphins was a blast and snorkeling in Captain Cook's monument was amazing! Throughout the experience, Mike would stop at certain places and give us a little bit of Hawaiian history, which I thought was really cool. Wanted to do this on a rec by a friend. Contacted a good friend who's a Expedia concierge/local expert on Oahu and said the ones in Kona all recommended this company. Great. Call. Enjoyed the amazing night manta dive last night with an awesome crew. Towel n change of clothes or jacket is all you need to bring, they provide everything else. Dre was super helpful & informative, other guys were good too but forgot their names. Their boat is a bigger zodiac so keep that in mind. Anyone can do the actual 'snorkeling' as it's mostly just laying face down with a floater holding on to the pvc pipes that surround the boards w/lights shining down. After a 20-25 min mostly easy going trip we arrived at the location fronting the Sheraton. live music could also be easily heard from the hotel as well, bonus! Saw anywhere from 5-10 different mantas & they were there from beginning to end. They were HUGE!! Always felt safe, though those mantas do come surprisingly close to you, but they have nothing that can harm you. Definitely bring your underwater camera or borrow one of their go pros. At the end of the trip they talked about other tours they do, definitely will do the dolphin trip the next time here. Highly recommended. Don't forget to Tip da boys! read more

This place was great for our late night manta ray snorkeling adventure! The boat we went on left around 8:30/9ish, after all the other boats were already heading back, so while everyone else had dozens of other snorkelers and scuba divers trying to swim with the same few mantas, we got them all to ourselves! To start, Captain Mike gave us a nice long lecture about mantas, how to interact with them, how they act, how these mantas are different... just about anything we ever wanted to know about mantas and more! Super informative. After that we took a ~15min boat ride out along the shore and got to our stop just as the last two boats were leaving their manta viewing. As soon as we stopped and turned our flood lights on we already saw some mantas swimming up by the surface! After hopping in the water (with a wet suit on since it was out a bit and night, but still not too cold either way) we got to hang onto a surfboard and watch as mantas swam below us (literally inches below us at some points). The view was amazing, and having a friend bring a GoPro along made it even more worthwhile. These things are HUGE, and will just about bump right into you if you're not careful. I HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone who has a free night on the big island. The idea of getting into the water late at night seemed a bit daunting to me, but was well worth the effort and the cost. read more

We used Splashers for both the Dolphin Snorkel and Manta Ray Snorkel. The Manta Excursion was amazing, we saw about 15 mantas right under us! We went to the later nighttime dive. If you get seasick, watch out for this trip as you are floating on top of the water for quite some time watching the mantas. My husband never gets seasick but he had to get out of the water and back onto the boat because he was feeling ill after about 30 minutes or so. The Dolphin Snorkel was also pretty cool, we didn't see too many dolphins up close but of course that isn't the company's fault. Snorkeling at Capt Cook was very beautiful. Splashers gives you a deal if you buy multiple excursions from them, combined with their knowledgable and funny guides it is a good deal. Would recommend them for your Hawaiian vacation. read more

Booked Splashers for a cruise with my wife and 6 1/2 year old son (who knows how to snorkel and swim). We couldn't have had a better experience. After the safety briefing, we headed out to look for Spinner Dolphins. The crew explained that the dolphins were sleeping, how they slept and then we hopped in the water to swim with a pod at rest. Then we headed to Captain Cook for some amazing snorkeling followed by lunch and a few cool stops along the way as we went back to the harbor. We stopped at 'end of the world', Pele and some sea caves. As an extra treat, they found another group of Spinners that did a little show and wished us Aloha! Overall a great experience and we'll be sure to return for the Manta swim next time. read more

We booked it through C Big Island Adventures. We enjoyed the amazing night with around 20 Manta Rays. They provide wetsuit, snorkeling kit and snacks plus drinks. Initially, my wife said, she got the torn wetsuit, and one said, this is what we have. Little annoying at beginning, but turned to be amazing experience after Dre handled and cared my wife, as she is a completely non-swimmer and scared of deep water. This is the first time, she jumped in an ocean. There were 2 non-swimmers in our boat, including my wife and he kept both of them by his side and constantly asking about their well being. Also carried both of them back to the boat. We all enjoyed that bumpy ride to the destination. I would definitely book another snorkeling with them in the future. James and Dre were really great guides and very helpful for my mom, and were indeed great with the whole boat. We got to get into the water with dolphins three times and it was amazing! Because of the weather we didn't go to their usual reef location, but the one they took us too was good, too. I'd highly recommend this trip. (In fact, one of the other guests visits Hawaii 4-5 times a year and told me she goes out with them every time she is there!) Do be prepared for a bouncy ride, though. We took our family of 6 on the snorkel/dolphin boat ride ad had a great time. Kids ages ranged from 6-15. Wet suits and gear provided. We had our own snorkel gear which we had rented elsewhere for a week and brought it along as it saved time to not have to be fitted for their gear. Our 6 and 8yr olds got cold/tired and took a break on the boat. One of the staff members graciously offered to baby sit them so us parents continue snorkeling (on a bigger operation, I'm sure I would have had to sit out). Worked well because they had lots of snacks and kids were well behaved. Snorkeling was great. Saw lots of dolphins up close but didn't get to swim with them because they were in the channel. Of note, we planned this for the last day of our trip so we could get the littles used to snorkeling before going. read more

The sunset was amazing and romantic! I also had 3 kids with me so this time was not as cool as the 8pm swim. Definitely take a wet suit, even if you don't think you need it- it gets chilly in the water because you're not swimming about. The actual manta swim is surreal, incredible, once- in- a-lifetime! Took my girlfriend out for a snorkel day and swim with dolphins and had an absolute blast! My girlfriend was a little nervous about jumping in the water fast when we were by the dolphins but afterwards we took a journey to Captain Cook area where we saw the monument and had plenty of time to snorkel by the reef. She had enough courage then to get in the water and snorkel and it was beautiful! Water was crystal clear and the tropical fish were vibrant and beautiful. The coral was also beautiful. Afterwards were we treated to a sandwich, drinks, and chips. If thats not enough, we took a little tour of the volcano formations on our way back to port. Even givin history lesson on both Captain Cook story and the lava formations. (Pele goddess of fire) Got drenched on the way back but thats ok it felt great! :-) Long wonderful days for the $$. Manta Ray snorkel was awesome! We actually had to go twice since no Mantas showed up the first night. Each night we had a completely different experience. The first night started out ok with the Captain driving the boat north towards the airport. There were tons of fish but unfortunately no Mantas. It seemed like one of the crew members and the captain didn't get along. He kept asking her to do things and she kept making passive aggressive comments to him. We thought this was humorous, but could see how others would think it was unprofessional. Maybe they were just disappointed there were no Mantas. Rebooking was a breeze and the second night was a lot more fun. It started with the captain radioing someone to see if any Mantas had been spotted near the airport. He got word that none had been seen so we headed south to a different spot. We saw 2 different Mantas and got the experience of a lifetime. We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone wanting to experience something unlike anything else. read more
