Splashes Cafe is found in the Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre at Eirias Park. It's seperated from the swimming pool by a glass wall so as you're eating your lunch you can watch the swimmers splashing about next door, hence the name.
Although it's called 'Splashes Cafe' it's really more of a canteen. All the tables and chairs are bolted to the floor and all the cutlery and crockery are plastic. There's no table service, you order your food and wait for your number to be called after which you're expected to go back to the counter to collect it.
In terms of food the menu is not what you might expect from a leisure centre. You can get a baked potato but basically it's sausage, egg and chips, burgers, hot dogs, beans on toast and the like. There are some 'pasta pot' things which look to be the only food item known to man with a lower nutritional value that a pot noodle.
The pricing structure also a bit random. You can get a round of toast for 35p, but beans on toast will cost £1.70. You do get two rounds of toast with your beans but still it means you're paying £1.00 for a helping of beans. However if you buy chips (£1.30) and add beans you'll pay £1.90, i.e. your beans will 'only' cost 60p. So if you're a toast eater bear in mind you'll be subsidising the chip munchers.
In fact the pricing structure encourages over-eating. Chips will cost £1.30 but add one 'topping' and you'll pay £1.90. Toppings include sausage, egg, beans, cheese, chicken nuggets and coleslaw. However add a second topping and you'll only pay £2.20 and add a third and you'll only pay £2.50. So the more toppings you add the cheaper they get!
One quibble about the plastic knives and forks is that they are a bit flimsy and the knives in particular tend to snap in half if you try to cut food with them. As their sole purpose is to cut food this makes them unfit for purpose. By all means have plastic cutlery but make them rigid enough to cut through a piece of toast.
All in all it's a cheap and cheerful place for a quick breakfast or spot of lunch but you won't want to hang around too long on the uncomfortable, plastic seats. read more
