Sometimes, the screenings are followed by panel discussions with faculty or even filmmakers. The most memorable screening I attended was of "The Janes" (2022): based on the real-life story of bad-ass women from the late 60s and early 70s who provided abortion services to Chicago women before the legalization of abortion (Roe v Wade) in 1973. There was a panel discussion following the screening with the actual Janes (now in their 80s) who spoke about their experiences as part of the Jane Project. It was an incredible experience. Since then, I've been going to Doc quite consistently. They often have fun themes, such as a martial arts series, and also screen mainstream films like Barbie and most recently, One Battle After Another. There are quarters where I don't enjoy their selections, but when I do go, I always enjoy the movie-going experience. The theatre is medium-sized and quite shabby. It is usually very clean and the sound and picture quality are great. The website is quite poorly designed, so I would recommend buying tickets in person. I recommend a visit to Doc if you are in Hyde Park and find their selections interesting: the calendar is on the Doc Films website.

No one shouting out the ending. No one shouting, "Don't go in there!" or ""Run! Run! That guy is going to kill you!" Wouldn't it be lovely? Wouldn't it be nice? Such dreams... can become a reality. My friend John had his birthday party yesterday. He is a huge movie buff. Huge. Massive. Ginormous. For the start of his party, he did a double feature here to watch two of his favorite movies, Mission Impossible 3 and Goonies. (Not being the movie fan as he is, this would be my first viewing of either one of these movies). He rented out the space, he generously provided an assortment of snacks and drinks and provided his own copies of the movies on Blu Ray. It was a great time. The space itself is a 49 seat theater where many of the city's film critics screen movies, apparently its quite booked before the Oscars and other award celebrations. However Steve, (he's the one who runs it), allows it to be rented out for you and your closest 49 friends when its available. You bring your drinks, you bring your snacks, you have a good time. (and um.. as far as I know no nookie is allowed during the show and you help out by picking up after yourselves, but that's just proper etiquette. No one wants to see you get it on.... you're watching a movie, not making one). It really was a great time and pretty unique. It was fun to have a place to yourself and your friends and have a great time and Steve was really friendly. Anyone up for a movie or three?

The silent film era of the…read morelate 1800's and early 1900's was full of a different kind of visual quality and audience participation. Showings of silent films almost always featured live music by either a pianist or an organist. Such is the case with the Silent Film Society of Chicago. Thanks to this organization I have been able to relive the birth of motion pictures. They started out at the Gateway Theater and showed films at places such as the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge and The Arcada Theater in St. Charles. The recently refurbished the Portage Theater and stated showing films once again. Did you love Phantom of the Opera? Well you haven lived until you've seen the original with Lon Chaney. Most of us have seen films with Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Now introduce yourself to others actors such as Roscoe Arbuckle (aka Fatty Arbuckle), Louise Brooks, and hotties like Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson. Like any movie theater they have concessions in the lobby but also sell other items from "The Age of the Silver Screen". They have post cards, movie posters, photos, and more. This past summer they had a silent summer film festival for six consecutive Fridays. Hopefully they'll do is again this summer. Oh and not let's forget the monster film festival. That's about the time Phantom of the Opera comes out. So get off the computer and see an oldie but not necessarily moldy. The society has a mailing list which offer advance ticket sales and notify you of up coming events. You can also call or contact them on their website. Some examples: 1) Some silent films have been rescored with gorgeous music by the composer Carl Davis. Other films - such as Metropolis - have wonderful original scores. Typically the society has live accompaniment from a shrill sounding organ or worse - someone playing the saw. Really ruins the experience. 2) The website typically doesn't typically work. 3) Last year I paid for a membership and received - nothing. No emails, no newsletters, nothing. Its a hard enough road to get people to appreciate silent film without these types of roadblocks. Can't compare to San Francisco's silent film festival.

Limited runs typically include at least 4 performances, so cast, crew and musicians evolve over the run to adapt to experiences. Excellent production values (direction, staging, lighting, sound and music) and some surprisingly talented young performers from all over Chicago. Most of the troupe are committed to performing arts as a lifestyle, and participate in other performing arts situations as well (many existing and former members attend Chicago High School for the Arts, or ChiArts). SBYR is a great experience for young performers who want a solid immersion in theater. Private lessons available on the side. Parent-supported organization, which - given the high production values - should give way to improved public support and ticket sales. Bottom line: SBYR is a superb evolutionary theater experience for young performers who will learn all aspects associated with producing live theater productions.

She's in a BFA acting program now at a University which would not have happened without the nurturing, teaching, and discipline of Tamara Drew and Mr. West. It is now centered around the grassy strip in Logan Square by the Illinois Centennial Monument. https://www.facebook.com/LoganSquareArtsFest This was a nice festival as it caters to all. Music stages were located on the west and east sides of Milwaukee. The main stage closest to the monument. All of the food vendors lined the street and the art/shopping points were lined across the park grass. In and out was controlled and a $5 donation was requested. I personally liked this set up and think it does more for those attending. The monument area provides plenty of fun space for kids to play and parents to sit and enjoy the music.

I can honestly say that Green Shirt Studio has changed my life. The best decision I ever made was on one Sunday in January 2011, I went to a all-day Meisner workshop, where I met Andrew Gallant and Sommer Austin. Several years ago, I completed levels 1-5, and I just keep coming back for more. Currently, I am taking the Accelerated Meisner course, which is 100% worth the investment! Not only does this work "get me out of my head" and help me with my acting, I find that it has made me a better communicator when it comes to public speaking, job interviews, and professional development. Throughout the years, Sommer and Andrew have helped me in so many ways, as both a theatre artist and a professional arts administrator. I can honestly say that I wouldn't be where I am today in my career without their belief in my abilities, their careful coaching, and their commitment to supporting the goals of their students.
