I've never been compelled to write a negative Yelp review in my life. As soon as I came in, a guy with blond hair looked at me with the most condescending expression and clearly didn't want to help me. I spoke with another worker about getting a repair done on my bike so I could sell it (I had tried earlier, but there was an issue with the derailleur). He then chimed in with a condescending, "How much were they even going to give you?" I knew the tone he was taking and told him I was going to price it myself. While they were repairing it, he went out front with his coworker, and I overheard him saying things like, "I wouldn't even buy that bike." Sure, you sell e-bikes, but that doesn't give you the right to be an elitist. If you're going to badmouth your paying customers, do it in private. I mean, come on--it's not a thousand-dollar bike, but that doesn't make it an awful bike. Talking badly about your customers is such a bad look. The only reason this place is getting 2 stars is because the bike repairman was able to replace the derailleur, and he was genuinely helpful (paid around $65 for parts and labor). The guy who checked me out was pretty nice as well and wished me luck on selling it--could've been condescending for all I know--but nevertheless, the experience was ruined by the rude worker and left a terrible taste in my mouth. Until they treat their customers right, I won't be coming back here. Repairs are alright, I guess, as long as you have a thousand-dollar e-bike. So go ahead, try your luck, and maybe you won't get disrespected like I was. read more

I have been a customer at Spokesman for over 30 years. I bought two bikes from them in the past and lots of equipment. Today, I got a flat tire on the river levee not very far from Spokesman. I called to ask them to fix the flat, and he asked if it was an e-bike. I said yes, but it has normal tires. The employee who answered the phone said, "We only repair e-bikes that we sell". I explained that I had a serious flat, and he repeated the same words even louder. I mentioned that I have bought bikes and equipment from them and am a long-time customer. I also asked if he would repair it if I bought a tire, and he repeated the same exact words even louder. I had to walk my bike a couple of miles to Epicenter Cycling, and they repaired it right away. I can't believe that Spokesman treated a customer this way. I will never go there again. The irony is that I tried to buy an e-bike from them back when I was shopping for one, and the one that I took for a test ride had a chain that kept skipping. I brought it back to see if they would fix it or give me another one to test ride, and the employee just shrugged and said that they do that. I left and bought one elsewhere. Other than that, I used to really like the store and the employees. But those two experiences have turned me off for good. read more

I have been riding in Santa Cruz since the early 1990s and the Spokesman crew has taken care of me from day one. I stepped away from cycling for a long time but when I was ready to get back in the saddle - Spokesman took care of me once again. I do not know everyone's names (my apology) but Matt, Robert, Chase, Jason, Craige have been the crew lately who sold me my Robeaux, keeps my gears shifting properly everytime I whack my derailer out of alignment, gives me great advise on nutrition, helmets, and today, I bought the best pair of cycling shoes I have ever owned thanks to Chase's knowledge and listening skills - I LOVE my S-Works Recons. Service and selection, just all around great customer relations. This place was recommended to me by a co-worker. Great experience from the moment I opened the door. A friendly greeting and a genuine desire to help that was delivered from the second I walked in, to the time the door closed behind me. Came in because the pedals on my bike needed to be replaced, and they were willing to help. I most likely could have done this myself, but I'd rather leave this project to a professional. Exceptional service, all of my questions were answered knowledgeably. Not just by one person but several. While I was there I decided to get a rack for my bike. Truthfully it's a great feeling when you meet people in a business that truly have a love for products they are selling. That is the feeling I got when I came here. Front forks had been scraped and there were paint chips missing near the chain stay. You can see part of the damage on the front fork in my picture. I've been filling a ton of my cycling needs at Spokesman during the pandemic. Their online shopping + curbside pickup system is the best I've found in the county, with a really comprehensive online shopping experience that outmatches most others. They offer curbside for online orders, which is super awesome. It's tough at the downtown location though due to lack of parking and the parklette in front of their shop, which often has lots of people eating in it and makes social distance tough. The one other snafu is that they don't differentiate between, say, someone ordering an S-works with complicated financing and a gal just picking up her $20 gloves. It's all the same line, which can lead to a longer wait time than you would hope. With that said, I love the ability to browse their very extensive selection online and pick up curbside. Plus it feels good to buy local and Spokesman seems pretty active in the local cycling and tri community. I've trusted them for my needs often this pandemic and would again. read more

If I could give a lower rating I would for sure. Extremely unprofessional in dealing with customers. I had called on a Friday morning for a pair of wheels for my MTB. They confirmed that my desired specs were in stock but in carbon. I asked for some store discount which he denied. Fair enough given shortage of supply. After hanging up I checked online once again for a bit to again come across this stores website where they displayed 10% off for Ibis wheels. I was like I was just told no discounts. I called again same store to see if they can honor their ad online. The guy who picked said yes, but transferred me to the person with whom I spoke first. He was a bit hesitant to say yes they will honor the discount but said yeah it can be done. It was very annoying to say him that when he knew at the beginning that a discount could have been given. Anyway I moved past the frustration and asked him few questions to double confirm it was the wheelset I needed. He literally put me on hold and went to check and confirmed that it had the 6pawl XD driver and 6bolt for a 27.5. I told him I would drive from East Bay in peak traffic to pick the item, in response he said that's fine and there are opened till 6PM. He took my name and said will set it aside on my name. Just before I was about to leave someone left a VM in my cell saying their store is Infact open till 5PM only and suggested I go to their non Outpost location. By this time it was too late and hence I called the store to tell them I'll reach tomorrow since I wouldn't be able to reach on time. When I reached today, I was told that's it's a mistake and there is none in stock. I asked for Miles who confirmed me and I didn't even get to d as peak with him. There was barely any visible effort to look for it or even help me. The guy with whom I spoke was kind of disrespectful and I doubt he understood what I told. He said Ibis wheel that I'm looking doesn't come in 6bolts and it's not possible they keep it. See attached screenshot from their website which shows in stock and the exact stock I needed. Very unprofessional and lack of interest in helping a customer who was in dire need of a wheelset due to upcoming travel. Plus not to forget I drove 2+ hrs from East Bay in traffic to pick it up. In my several years of dealing with bike shops I have never seen such lack of interest, unprofessionalism and total failure of communication. It's sad to see LBS behave this way when online shopping is the preferred shopping mode for most people. I know this review means nothing to them but this doesn't mean it shouldn't be known to others. I love giving good reviews and only in rare execrations I ding someone. This is one of those! I had an issue with my wife's hydraulic disc brakes after I replaced the pads. My closest bike shop was closed and my preferred shop is across town. I didn't want to deal with traffic to the west side so I stopped in here. They very quickly reminded me why I don't come here. Both mechanics I spoke to were super dickish, neither one had any interest in listening to what I was actually describing was the issue, and they told me they would need to do a full bleed of both brakes ($50 each) before they would even try to diagnose the actual issue. They also implied that the brakes may not be salvageable and might need to be replaced. Even my wife who is much kinder than me commented that she was shocked by their attitude. We walked out, dealt with traffic, and went over to Cycleworks on Mission. I don't know the mechanic's name there but he listened to what I described as the problem, threw it on the stand, and fixed both brakes within 5 minutes and refused to charge me. I had to buy some stuff from their shop just to try to support them for being super cool. Several months later including a full weekend of downhill riding in Downieville and the brakes haven't given my wife a single problem. read more

Now my 3rd Specialized bike from the awesome team at Spokesman bike shop! This time a 2024 Tarmac SL8 Pro Sram Force AXS with an upgrade Roval cockpit that is sleek, aero and good looks. The shop team has superb service, expert on experience and outstanding customer care! My new Tarmac from them is fast, aero and comfortable as well, the flat black frame color with the white logo is sharp! I drove extra distance for their repair service for my classic road bike because they're a certified Campagnolo shop--not that common. What I found was not only excellent service at a reasonable price, but a shop that gave the same excellent service to everyone from a mountain bike enthusiast in looking for a new bike, to a mom who needed her young child's flat tires fixed. Staff is very knowledgeable. Shout out to Harry for his Campy knowledge, but everything I heard from the rest while there spoke to a staff that knows their stuff. And they have at least one woman working there, which sadly is also rare at bike shops. AND I overheard that she's a mountain bike racer! Good example for young women and girls. (Now just change the name to Spokesperson, folks. ) read more

After getting a recommendation, I came to Spokesman Bicycles from Mountain View for a bike fitting with Wade. I have to say, it was probably one of the best decisions. Wade was very knowledgable, professional, and helpful. I had had some knee pain and Wade really took his time with me and my bike: looking at my body and posture and range of motion, the size of all parts of my bike (who knew I needed smaller handlebars!?), and my pedaling technique. If anyone needs a bike fitting - whether due to discomfort or because they bought a new bike, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Wade @ Spokesman. We stopped in here real quick, as my husband's back tire on his bike was acting up. He explained what was going on and a gentleman came out, took a look and knew exactly what it was. We thought it might be a spoke, but being a fat tire, it was for sure the tire and might not be sitting on the rim. So a super quick stop and problem solved. With our experiences with bike shops (and we have been to a few), we would recommend them and if we are in the area again and need a bike shop, this will be on the top of our list! read more

Highly recommend this bike shop. I purchased a Specialized Sirrus X3 several days ago and Eric helped me out. I don't know a lot about bikes and he was able to explain numerous concepts (pedal crank arm length, gear structures, materials) in a clear and thorough manner. Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable and articulate, but also he was very patient and kind. I'm really happy with my bike! He even recommended yummy food from the farmer's market because we asked what he liked to eat. The people in the service department section of the shop sawed part of the bike seat post to customize the fit. I hadn't noticed, but my partner mentioned that they were, at times, not wearing masks (indoors). This is the only aspect in which there's room for improvement...safety first. read more

Throughout quarantine, my boyfriend and I have been contemplating on buying a bike and after months of research we finally decided on getting the Specialized Sirrus X bike. Like what I said after MONTHS of research, we were too late on the bike game. The specific bike we were looking for was sold out everywhere! I've contacted different bike stores and honestly everyone was kinda rude/rushing the conversation since they're also probably busy with the amount of people trying to get a bike. Anyways, I luckily found online that they had the bike in my size that I was looking for.. so I decided to call them and try my luck if it was really in stock. I called and left a voice mail for them to call me back, I received a text from one of their salesman, Gene who was SOOOOOOO HELPFUL!! I can't thank him enough. Customer service is definitely 5/5 and he truly went above and beyond, even helped with making sure I scored the same bike for my bfs size. Both of our bikes were built and ready to pick up before a week and we couldn't be any happier. read more

I've been warned about this bike shop for years but the bike broke nearby and I thought it can't suck that bad. I was wrong. These guys know their stuff and a few of the younger guys seemed nice but wow, the attitude of of the service department dude was ridiculous. He mistreated us from the moment we got there and my guy said to turn around but we were kinda stuck with a broken bike. So David or whoever mistreated us, had us feeling like we were in his way and def let us know. I walked out bummed and explaining to my kid that is NOT how you treat customers. Especially nice kind ones. But I hoped for the best. In my gut I knew we were screwed. Picking the bike up though I still can't figure out what they charged us for, it was double any other shop and the attitude was unreal. Maybe this shop caters to pros or mountain bikers but treating people with common decency should Atleast be baseline when you're a business who deals with customers. We'll go back to or usual bike shop up the hill, just a bunch of friendly kind guys that love bikes and are stoked on seeing the people they help ride off happy. By the way, wasn't going to write a review because I didn't want to be negative but we had to take the bike to our normal bike shop to fix was actually wasn't fixed by these guys. Lame. read more

My boyfriend wasnt stoked on the service guys attitude. I brought my bike in there as I needed a quick tightening on my brake and we didnt have an allen wrench. My boyfriend asked if he had an allen head and just wanted to use the tool really quickly, but the guy went ahead and did it himself then said he wasnt going to charge us for it... ummm what...? For tightening a bolt? Hectic business. Literally what does two turns of a bolt cost now days? I'll prob go back just to purchase a tube with the checkin offer thou... tubes are good to have around in the case of a flat. Maybe I'll also add allen wrenches to my riding backpack as well. read more
