Support your local family owned businesses! About the store: This place is small but they have a lot of parts and accessories that you need! No bullshit parts just quality parts and extra parts you NEED. They also sell helmets and other riding gear as well. Buying experience: John Sr. gave me no BS and was just full of knowledge. He suggested parts and let me choose mods that would be best for the riding I will be doing. They made me feel like I was home and we chatted for a few hours regarding people we knew, trails and places we have rode, and just about life in general. Price: I definitely got the best deal for my new KTM 6 days compared to other places in the Bay Area. Let's just say with all the parts I got, other dealers wouldn't even come close by a few bills. Pick up day: My 6 days was still in the crate and was not set up yet when I first went in. They gave me a timeline on when it would be complete and they followed through. John Sr and Jr stayed way past closing hours because of the crazy traffic on 17 (due to the mudslides and road closures). They were more than willing to stay and did not harass me for coming late! John Sr and Jr helped me load her up. All in all, I was so happy when I picked up the 2017 6 days, I didn't know what to do and gave John Sr a hug . Steve S nailed it. Anyone who has a difficult time accepting Tom's personality, like Chris B and Jesse S, have their own personality problems to overcome. Mommy issues maybe? A need to be coddled and mothered to stoke an ego they don't quite have under self-control? Moore & Sons... Moore & Tom... they are many things, but they ain't your mama's motorcycle shop. They are fathers and sons and brothers. They are the men you go to because they're the only ones left still standing here in our Santa Cruz world of motorcycle dealerships. And they're the ones that many folks come to from far and wide, from way over the hill, from way down to Monterey and San Benito Counties because they've got what it takes to get you what you need, to get you what you need NOW, and to do it without any fluffy bullshit. I need a part for KTM or Husqvarna, they got it. I need special tools that are otherwise unobtainium, they order it up for me, here in two days, and they don't require any payments up front. Sure, that's probably because I'm local, and we have developed a little bit of a professional relationship, but that also gives me better insight into their business. No other dealership has the means to establish such a personal relationship with their customers. No other dealership is as approachable. And it is no coincidence that no other dealership has survived in this town. Look around. What do you see? Where's BMW? Where's Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Harley Davidson? Where did Vespa go? They're all long gone. Yet John still stands alone, his family and Tom by his side, serving us all in a manner none of the others could ever approach. I'm hesitant to give five stars here... not because I have any stories to tell, but I'm not 100% sure it's "As good as it gets". I may update my rating later perhaps. I am a fan of the shop though. Time will tell :) I bought a 2011 EXC450 last January from John and the entire purchase was great, start to finish. I was able to call and talk to him on the second ring without prompts from any phone system (press one for sales, etc). I talked with John in person a few months before and was impressed with his personality, and how he deals with customers. Good advice, and no salesperson b.s. When it came time to buy the bike, he gave me a good price on the phone. Other dealers have given me a hard time about pricing on the phone before, so I know not all dealers will do this. I tend to shop around a bit, just to make sure I'm not getting ripped off and was told by a few shops that the price he quoted was good, and they didn't want to steal a sale from John. I liked that integrity from the people who said that. The other local shop, the motor cafe said they would match his price. I think it's good that you will match it, but I'd prefer if you said you'd beat it by X amount, that would have gotten my attention. It's harder to give a good price up front than it is to match someone else. Please see my review of the motor cafe if you are considering buying from them. I told John what I wanted done before I picked the bike up (re-gearing, uncork, and a few other farkles). When I got there the bike was ready to go, no problems. I ended up buying a bunch more gear while I was there, and they gave me good pricing. I know from 25 years of riding and buying bikes that the day you buy a new bike they will give you a discount on gear, etc. He recommended a pair of gloves that I really love (moose). All in all, good shop, good people! I gave him a call today to ask about a license plate bracket and he said no problem, come on by and he will fix me up no charge. I've read the reviews here, and even my mechanic says he had a run in with them where they were wrong about something, but hey, we are all wrong from time to time, so I won't hold that against them. I would say about some of the reviews that it's going to be difficult to please everyone, all the time. A few years ago I bought my first dual sport bike. Nothing fancy just a DRZ from the local Suzuki dealer dealer. I wasn't impressed with their service and was looking for a good shop. On a whim I took my bike in to Moore and Sons to see if they'd put some new tires on my bike. I figured I'd get some flack for bringing a Jap bike into a hoity toity KTM dealership. Quite the contrary Tom, the service manager, took great care of my bike and treated me with complete respect. All I had come in for was a set of tires, but by the time I left I shook Tom's hand and told him, "You've just made a customer for life." Since then I've gotten into more hardcore dual sporting. I was in talking with Jon Moore on numerous occasions over several months picking his and Tom's brains. Even after my wife forbid me from buying a brand new bike they answered my questions and helped me find a used 525 that another customer was selling. After a year with the 525 I wanted something bigger and the wife ok-ed the purchase of a big Adventure bike. First stop Moore and Sons and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a brand new, but old stock, 950 Super Enduro. I rode out of there that day with it. I have Tom do some of the work on it, but when I want to do it myself he's been a great source of info. Bottom line... There is a reason they've been in business for almost forty years. Moore and Sons offers fair prices, excelent knowledge, arguably the best mechanic around, and when you walk in the shop you can tell they love riding as much, if not more than, you do. read more

Wow. After getting back to Seattle and sitting down to write my review , I was surprised to see the 1 star reviews. I was on the road back from San Diego last week with a KTM 640 Adventure. I called when they opened and spoke with Jr. Moore about getting a tire on that morning. Not only did they have 4 different rear tires to choose from, they were only a few bucks more than Rocky Mountain ATV, which is the cheapest I've seen online. So Jr passes me onto Tom to see if he can get me in for a tire. After a few minutes on the phone he told me to take my time coming in, but said he could get to it when I showed up. What made this entire experience outstanding, was Tom's help once I showed up. Not only did he help me get a lift for my bike (no center stand), but helped me get it to where I could get my tire off and do some maintenance while I waited. I was there a total of an hour - left with a new Pirelli MT21 rear tire, Motorex chain lube, and labor to install the tire all for $130.00 out the door with tax and hazard fees. Anyone doing the math will realize this is more than reasonable. Especially considering KTM owners have it pretty good with a decent dealer network, and should expect to pay a premium for that convenience. I own Ducati's and BMW's as well, and bend over each time I'm in for service. So for the reviewers saying all these guys care about is money - I'm puzzled. If you treat someone with respect they tend to give it back. Several customers came in, and everyone was greeted like an old friend and treated no differently than I was. I felt right at home. I would highly recommend planning your service here if you're traveling. I have nothing but praise to Moore & Son's - and especially Tom. Who by the way will never see this as he's resisted the internet, email, cell phones, and GPS. He's old school and that's okay by me. read more

Tom installed one of those new Recluse EXP clutches into my 08' KTM 300. He charged me a fair price for that and a couple other minor things. I went riding and the EXP performed perfectly for about 20 minutes and the auto-clutch ability started to fade. With apologies, John took the bike in that afternoon, re-adjusted the clutch for no charge and had it ready by the end of the day. With a hydraulic clutch the only way to adjust the Recluse EXP is at the pressure plate, not the clutch lever perch which would have been a quick fix. So, it's a bit of time to remove and reinstall the side clutch case for an adjustment. The next ride the clutch worked, but failed again. With no worries, Tom took my bike, called Recluse, they said to put lock tight on the adjustment bolt. He did so and for no charge. The Recluse now works perfectly and I'm very happy with how Moore & Sons KTM resolved this issue. read more

Their mechanic Tom is the best in town and has been a motorcycle mechanic for over 30 years. I'll tell you this- I've been dealing with Moore's since 1998 when nobody else could solve an issue with my old ATK. One visit to service and it was solved! No more tears! I returned to Santa Cruz in 2007 and received prompt, professional service on my KTM 625 SXC thanks to Service Manager Tom Dillenbeck. You will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable mechanic than Tom. When it was time for a new KTM Adventure 990 I shopped around and then visited Jon Moore. Jon's price was far better than any other shop in the area and with Tom's expertise in the Service Department I have been a very satisfied customer. Let me begin by saying I have been riding/racing KTMs for years. I have only lived in the South Bay for a short period of time, so I have never actually been a customer of Moore in Sons, but that is because my experience never went beyond 2 phone calls I had with their mechanic Tom. I have pretty good experience wrenching on my own bikes, but sometimes I seek the expertise of a professional. I had my crank removed from the bike and lacked the proper tool necessary to remove the inner-race of the crankshaft bearing that was pressed onto the crank. I called and spoke to Tom, explained the situation, and at first he seemed polite and could do the job. It was a Friday afternoon, and I was in a hurry to put my bike back together in order to race an enduro that Sunday. I live in San Jose and was more than willing to drive to/from Santa Cruz to make this happen. As soon as I asked how long it would take, Tom's attitude completely changed. He thought I was a mechanic from another shop and needed a help. He made comments like "even if it takes me 5 minutes I'm still gonna charge you an hour's labor, especially since I've already wasted several minutes on this phone call." I was completely floored. I didn't ask how much it would cost, and I probably would have paid his hourly rate. I apologized for wasting his time and hung up the phone. After letting myself cool down for a few minutes, I called back to speak to Tom. I merely wanted to ask how he expected to gain new customers if this is how he treated people on the phone. He again went on about how the call was eating into his hourly labor rate, so I offered my credit card number so he could charge me "by-the-minute" for his very helpful demeanor (sarcastically of course). He said we would never be able to have a professional relationship and hung-up on me. Of course I got upset towards the end of the call because I refuse to be treated like that by anyone...especially someone seeking my hard earned $$$. In the end, I am missing this weekend's enduro race, and Moore and Sons will miss me being a loyal customer, as I like to support local dealerships/mechanics. I you are looking for an over-illuminated marble floor showroom with rows of fox racing gear guarded by uniformed and generally uninformed salespeople, this is probably not your five star spot. This place is all about good dirt/enduro bikes and well seasoned guys that ride and wrench on them. I've ridden with him several times over the last 20 years or so and he's always complaining about how beautiful the places he's guided me through are, how motorcycles are no way to visit the spectacular state of California and that he can't stand helping out mechanically dis-abled idiots like myself. Kidding on that last point :) Seriously though, one of the most knowledgeable and technically up-to-date rider/mechanics I've had the pleasure of knowing. Taking the time to give me repair advise (more than a few times) over the phone certainly doesn't hurt his reputation. A true enthusiast with a lifetime of skills and information - I know of many customers who will truck their machines over the hill to have a legitimate authority wrench on their bikes. Tom went to bat for me to get a new oe fuel pump for my 2011 fe570. This was part of the recall program for an identified problem; but I had no idea it was still being honored, and I am the third owner. Also, both my wife and I have experienced recent health issues, making it difficult for us to get the bike in for additional work; and Tom has been more than accomodating in scheduling appointments most convenient for us. Lastly, John went above and beyond for me putting together a 500 exc deal. Every single call he promised was received, and every single item was addressed. Easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it and parking is extremely limited, so you may have to park in the parking lot of the shop next door. This is definitely a dirt bike shop and they don't seem to do a lot of business with KTM's street bikes, but none-the-less they were very friendly. I had to wait about 30 min beyond my appointment time before anyone came to look at my bike, but they did spend a nice amount of time with me discussing my issues once they did. Overall, I'd say its the kind of place you want to patron, because its clearly an old-school family run shop that you don't see too often anymore. However, I'll check out the other KTM dealers up in San Jose and San Fran before coming back to see if they are a little more focused on supporting the full line of KTMs. read more

Moore & son Motorcycles KTM is a riders shop from purchasing to service. I highly recommend building a relationship with these guys. Moore has had this shop since the 60's and I can guarantee he will be in business for years and years. Tom, who handles Service Department is extremely knowledgable and has always been straight with me (which I appreciate) I have bought 3 motos there that he has maintained. These guys manage a good shop. Many Dealers have gone out of business and that is NOT customer service. Pinit Motorsports is out of business and I'm sorry for them, but Moore will be open on Tuesday. read more

I've never written an on-line review about anything before but I have dealt with John Moore for more than 30 years and after reading some of these reviews I felt the need to say something. He's a straight shooter, highly experienced, and I have never had a bad experience dealing with him. I've also dealt with Tom since he worked at the Santa Cruz BMW shop back when they handled Husabergs. He is as knowledgeable as they get. He spent considerable time on the phone with me a while back helping me diagnosis a problem with a Husaberg. I was able to fix it myself without buying anything. Folks need to understand that you need to support your local dealer if you want them to stay in business. They will stand behind a repair they make using factory parts but how can they do that if you walk in the door and ask them to install some after-market engine part that you bought elsewhere? What if they did it and it failed? Who would you blame then? I've been riding dirt bikes for more than 40 years and I've certainly dealt with some poor dealers but in my experience Moore&Sons is certainly not one of them. read more

Seems like a friendly enough family atmosphere at first But: If you ever have to deal with Tom the mechanic, he'll seem like a really nice guy but then you may find that unless you pay your 'club dues' (bottle of whiskey) every time you ask a question, you will be treated very rudely or snubbed all together. It's a strange atmosphere. Also, if he thinks you did something so awful as doing 2% of your parts buying online instead of with them, you are treated like a traitor. Regardless of the fact that you actually buy 98% of all your parts from them because you like giving business to the local guy. Even if you go to them first and ask if they can get a part for you and they say "no" and you go get it elsewhere, you are treated as if you are a traitor. You will be confronted with "Well you expect to actually talk to me and ask questions but you didn't buy that last part from us" and you say "I asked you first but you said you couldn't get this part, however what about all the other parts that I DO buy from you?" ( I've spent $100's here) None of that matters to him though because he doesn't just have a chip on his shoulder, this guy has a concrete block on his. Plus if he gives you bad advice or is wrong about anything, forget about him owning up to it or making it right. WAY too much pride. My experience went from being more than happy with them to being utterly shocked at how ridiculously rude and belligerent someone who relies on return clientele can actually be. Not at all concerned with keeping customers happy....or even keeping customers at all. Not recommended at all unless you like dealing with pompous assholes (or drama queens). I also found out (by being forced to shop around) that Tom GOUGE'S hard when it comes to repairs. Maybe it's cause they are the only KTM dealer in the area, but given my experience I would rather drive over the hill or to SF since the money you will save is worth the drive. Plus you will get treated in a more professional manner. I should clarify that it was never John, the owner that I had an issue with, only Tom, the mechanic. The sad thing is that, if I were to buy a new bike, I would be happy to give John my business but I would not be happy to give Tom a chance to be a total Dick to me. UPDATE: To Tracy K: The only reason that Moores is the only place left in town is because John is the second oldest dealer in the country and he happens to own his little hole in the wall (yet quaint) shop. If he had to pay the overhead that the others do (did) he would go down too. They don't survive because they are "so great". They survive because they have such low overhead and the shop is so small that they can afford to be unprofessional Dicks! In the words of a fellow KTM enthusiast whom I met on the road and discussed our disdain for Moore and Sons: "I don't go there no Moore" Update: To Steve S. We all have our own unique experiences I guess. Totally unhelpful. If you want a repair done by them, expect to be gouged on the price of parts. They will refuse to repair anything unless you buy genuine KTM parts from them at up to 75% more than you can an equivalent part online. I took a crankshaft in to get rebuilt with a new Pro-X rod I bought for $189. They refused to do the job as I had not paid $390 for the OEM part from them. Take your business elsewhere is my recommendation. read more

First purchase was a 2011 KTM 450 EXC. Just pulled the trigger on a 2014 KTM 500 EXC. These guys are the best. John and Tom are old school and really know what they are talking about. They quoted me a price but after driving 2.5hours the price went up $300. I bought a brand new bike that I later found had a bent radiator. It had never been down during my rides from new. He said he pulled something out of my exhaust that when shown to the "now" local dealer said it didn't come from that pipe. I don't believe a thing they say nor will I ever go there or recommend it to anyone. It's a rip. read more
