I initially made an appointment with Kyla for a late January 2013 session. However, due to torrential rain pour, Kyla and I discussed a rescheduled date, which was done with a lot of flexibility from Kyla. Prior to the rescheduled date, I called Spotlight Studios in which they returned my call soon after. As Spotlight Studio states on their voicemail greeting, they will return your call within 24 hours, which Kyla had done numerous times when I called. Okay, she may have been off an hour early on one occasion, but, I am okay with their phone system communication. I understand that without having a full administrative help answering the phone; they are able to keep their operating cost low. This would amount savings being passed down to their clients. So, we were scheduled to meet with Kyla yesterday at Balboa Park. However, there were scattered showers throughout the day and Kyla called me a few hours prior to the appointment to get my opinion if we should continue the shoot. Kyla wanted to make sure that I was okay since the shoot would involve my two small children and me. We decided to go ahead with the shoot since we decided there were some areas at the park where we could shelter from the rain. Kyla was very cooperative and really made me comfortable the shoot would go well. After arriving at the park, Kyla met us promptly at our appointment time. She greeted my kids and I with a huge warm smile and immediately engaged with my kids in a friendly conversation. They immediately liked Kyla and her laughter and huge smile made us very comfortable to start the session. Fortunately, the rain stopped and gave us a window of opportunity to shoot at the few different locations at Balboa Park. In my opinion, Kyla was able to take a possibly bad weather situation and exploit the beauty of the park enabling my children and I to enjoy the hidden gems that Kyla introduced us to. I was extremely impressed by how patient she was with my children and me during the shoot. Basically, it was a stress free situation that I thoroughly enjoyed. After the hour shoot, Kyla and I confirmed an in-studio picture viewing appointment on the spot and I am looking forward to see the products of the shoot. I am sure the products would just be a cherry on top as far as this experience was concerned. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the professionalism and service that Kyla and Spotlight Studios provided. Kyla was super friendly, enthusiastic, and energetic. I am looking to working with her again in the near future. Update: i got to view my pictures last week and I am pleased on the result. Kyla sat down with me and showed me the pictures and helped me picked out specific set of pictures. There was a method that she used which I really liked to help pick out pictures. If you get to pictures that you're unsure of, then she helps you differentiate between the two and eventually gets to one that you are happy with. I had a great experience going through the pictures with out any problems. Afterwards, she gave some additional options to the different photo packages that her studio offers. Kyla Akasha was our wedding + photographer. This review is a bit overdue, and I apologize because she deserves RAVE EFFING REVIEWS! She photographed our wedding, and first, our engagement shoot and bachelorette party. Here is my review of her, overall. Personality: 5 stars Kyla is a total sweetheart: friendly, personable, creative, conscientious, meticulate (but not annoying about it, trust me, you'll like this about her), energetic, passionate, confident in her skills (as she darn well should be), beautiful, and in charge. She photographed 3 of my events. I'm also pretty needy, and she was more than available, collaborating with me on many creative ideas for my wedding, bachelorette party, and engagement shoot. She was always involved and energetic, and overall awesome. For our engagement, for example, she was shooting us with light behind, and a public metro bus driver shouted at her that she was doing it wrong, that the shot would come out better if the light was behind the camera. She just laughed and said cheerfully, "I've been doing this 20 years, I think I got it, but thanks for the tip!!" with not even a hint of a sarcastic tone (lord knows, I would have not have been so nonchalant at a stranger telling me how to do my job). Professionalism: 5 stars Do not be fooled by her lighthearted, casual, and fun nature. I've seen this lead to crap quality work in other domains. NOT HERE. Kyla has managed to keep fun, easygoing, humorous energy in a fiercely competitive market with not the hint of compromise to her professionalism. She was never late for an appointment; always gave clear directions to locations; always kept in touch between appointments; was prompt with returning pictures as promised; organized and clear with contract and payment details, and other organizational details; and much more. Perhaps it was because everyone was in such a hurry to get through everything, or that my family is, well, confusing as hell, but I would have liked a touch more direction here since I forgot my list. Don't let this guide you away, though: we had some AMAZING pictures. Word to the wise: make a list of all the combinations of family members, friends, etc. shots you want and call those shots to be sure. I was in a whir on my wedding day, and didn't do this, and didn't get a few of the shots I wanted. However, my husband and bridal party and I had the time to get some priceless shots (that I wish I could include here). Quality of photography: 5 stars We loved our photos. I was SO nervous that I had a little too much champagne for our official viewing (Kyla, I'm sorry if I didn't express my full gratitude then), but every time I look at our pictures, I'm overcome with emotion all over again. She did such an amazing job. At the wedding, I was so nervous, and then we were late (my fault), and then my mom was the only one who understood my 9-pt. bustle, and she was nowhere to be found (making us more late) so there was, ahem, a *bit* of stress for some of the pictures, and, to my sheer amazement, you can't even tell. My husband says they are his favorite shots of me! We had over 500 shots for our wedding, in several different locations, with a lot of people, and a lot of stress, and our pictures came out absolutely stunning. Bottom line of this very long review: Kyla knows what she is doing. She is worth every cent (and more. Seriously, book her before she raises her rates!!). We are tremendously grateful for her skills, and we will be (and have already been, perhaps annoyingly so) recommending her to everyone we know. We did our son's six month pictures with Joanna at Spotlight Studios. It was a great experience from beginning to end. Kyla helped us to pick a good location for a six month old over the phone when we scheduled our session. Then Joanna met us at Balboa Park and did the actual shoot. Joanna was friendly and engaging. Our son was fussy and kind of uncooperative so we were pretty worried that the pictures were not going to turn out super great. But, when we did the viewing, the pictures were absolutely amazing. The scenery and the light was beautiful and the shots she took made us look beautiful too. Best of all, there were tons of great pictures of my little man. I never would have known he was fussy if I wasn't there myself. As a generality, I would prefer the convenience of doing the viewing online, but in this case, I can see why they do it in their studio. First you do a slideshow set to music for all of your images, then you go through a first run and get rid of any you don't like, then they have a neat little program that helps you compare similar images and helps you narrow your images down to the ones you want. Kyla was super friendly and helpful and made the whole viewing very enjoyable. I highly highly recommend Spotlight Studios. My girlfriend and I were asked to be part of a faux "Trash your Dress" photo shoot which Kyla (our photographer) wanted to put on for her portfolio. Having never been part of a photo shoot -- especially one that would last all day -- I was nervous about how everything would come together. Kyla and her assistant Kristina did an excellent job helping us get comfortable being in front of the camera and helped us feel natural in an unfamiliar setting. Kyla was very personable and had a great creative eye when it came to transforming the pictures into telling a personal story. You don't know how difficult it is to be moving from location to location and taking photos all day until you do it. But the day flew by so fast, as both Kyla & Kristina did a great job keeping us engaged and enjoying every moment. Absolutely LOVE our family portraits and portraits of our 1 1/2 year old son. Kyla did a beautiful job capturing our sons personality in beautiful photographs that literally brought tears to our eyes. It was so hard narrowing down our selections. I consider myself an amateur photographer and take thousands of photos of my two young sons every year. I am quite picky when it comes to photos. On the day of the photo shoot, it was getting dark. My wife and I were getting tired and my kids were hyper. I had low expectations. Surprised was an understatement when we saw the photos. My wife and I won a free engagement photo session from the bridal bazaar last year. We were skeptical at first, but our shoot was amazing. We both have never been in a photo shoot so we were very nervous. Kyla was absolutely amazing. Our photos came out so much better than we could have expected. We got all of our high quality digital images and we got a free print. We knew we had to hire her to photograph our wedding. The price was a bit more than we had planned to spend, but we have absolutely no regrets. Our photos are amazing! She is an amazing photographer, you absolutely get what you pay for. She is so much fun to work with, and she's great at coaching you on how to pose for the camera. We remembered some of her tricks too so we both take better selfies now. I should also mention that we had to reschedule our first engagement photo session a couple of times, but Kyla was awesome at being available. Kyla was our photographer for our engagement photo shoot. We were so nervous, but Kyla made us feel comfortable. She even took great photos of us and our dogs! (not just one, but multiple!) We loved her so much we asked her to be our photographer for our wedding! She did an amazing job! She loves what she does and it shows! She understood our theme/ idea for our wedding and made sure it showed in the photos. She helps direct family members along with the wedding party into the photos we wanted, in a professional way. She listened to our ideas and made them a reality! We also purchased the raw photos, which is great but I really wish we would have also invested in an album. Misleading. One star because the photographer was great and easy to work with. Don't buy the Groupon unless you're willing to spend a lot more money on pictures and by that I mean $250 minimum. The Groupon includes 10 digital images but what they don't tell you until you get to the studio is that these images have the watermark, meaning the pictures are useless! The only way to get pictures without watermarks is to buy one of their print packages starting at $150 and copyright release of $50, additional digital prints go from $10-$20. I also had to drive a whole hour out of my way because the only way to view the picture is to go to the studio. Once there they show you a slideshow and then you pick what pictures you want. Maybe it's just me but I don't need someone to pretty much baby sit while I look through the pictures to determine which ones I like. I like to take my time and change my mind as much or as little as I want. I've had professional pictures taken in the past and this is the first time I've felt the service was a scam! They don't have online access to pictures and I'm sure it's because they want you in the studio in order to pressure you to buy their print packages which is mandatory to get any digital prints. I wanted to only order digital images and that is not an option here unless you pay for one of the print packages whether you get the prints or not! They are very quick to get you in for the photoshoot but not very quick to send you the pictures after you've decided not to purchase any additional item other than what's included on the Groupon (10 watermarked downloadable images). I found their whole process amusing to say the least. read more

I bought a Groupon from them and wanted to get pictures taken in time to use another Groupon I bought to have Christmas cards made and Kyla accomodating me by fitting me in within in a week of calling! The photographer she sent out, Lisa, was amazing! Lisa made my daughter feel so comfortable I think she thought it was a playdate. It reflects in the pictures. Heard really good things about the studios, but had not so good experience with the pictures. Expected a lot but left very unhappy.

Bottom line: I would not recommend to others, and have already scheduled my newborn & first year shoots with another photographer. I feel bad writing this review, since Kyla seems like a nice enough person. But unfortunately I received very poor service and felt that I was treated badly every step of the way. To start, I scheduled my maternity shoot with Kyla months in advance. The week before the appointment I called in (twice before I got ahold of her, with no return call after my voicemail message) to confirm my shoot appointment and location. At that time I was informed that my appointment was confirmed, but that I would have a different photographer b/c Kyla decided to book a different (better paying, I am sure) appointment for the same afternoon. The other photographer, while good, clearly had little to no experience with maternity shoots. I actually think mine may have been her first ever maternity shoot. The next issue was with my viewing appointment. Again I had to call in twice, after no return from my voicemail left 2 days previous, to get ahold of Kyla and book my appointment. Then I had the audacity, believe it or not, to show up 5-10 minutes early for my scheduled appointment. I was not sure if I was in the right place because when I arrived I was confronted with a dark hallway in a warehouse with no one around. I texted Kyla to see if I was in the right place. She responded with attitude about how she wasn't there yet, had no way to know I would be early, and would be there in 5 mins at the scheduled time. She did in fact arrive exactly on time, although she then of course had to take another 5- 10 mins to turn on her computer and load my pictures. This was a small issue, but an annoyance, especially considering her attitude, indicating that I had done something wrong by showing up over 5 minutes early to her place of business for a scheduled appointment! I was also not happy with the viewing appointment in general. The way it was set up was that I came in for an hour and was led through all of the pictures on a TV screen about 8 feet away. With this set up I was not able to full scrutinize each photo to my satisfaction. In fact I ended up spending nearly the full hour kneeling on the floor (at 37 weeks pregnant, no less) in an attempt to get a closer look at the photos as they were displayed on the TV screen. I feel that I ultimately did not end up with the best pictures, or the pictures I would otherwise have chosen, had I been allowed more time and ability to scrutinize each picture closely. At the viewing appointment I purchased a print package. My dissatisfaction only continued as I attempted to ultimately get the prints from Kyla. When I emailed in my order, Kyla told me it would take a "few days," and that she would contact me when the order was ready for pickup. At this point I was 38 weeks pregnant, and trying to get everything possible taken care of before I went into labor and had my baby. So after a week went by with no word from Kyla I emailed her again to see if the prints were ready. Sure enough, they were ready (although she hadn't gotten around to contacting me yet). So I attempted to set up a time to pick up the photos. I told her I was available on Wednesday or on Thursday morning. She chose Thursday morning and suggested 11am. As it turned out I already had an appointment scheduled at 11am, so asked if I could stop by at 10:30am. She responded that 11am was her earliest available (??), and that she was "open all afternoon" if I wanted to stop by. I told her I could come by between 2-4:30, to which she responded she was only available until 2pm! I was ultimately able to schedule a pick up time a few days later. Again, this would have been only a minor inconvenience/ irritation, but combined with everything else, it really shows a lack of concern for the client and professionalism. Over all I am not completely displeased, as I did end up with a couple of very nice photos of myself and my family. However, all around I felt I received very poor service, and that Kyla was very inflexible and unprofessional. I was obviously in the market for a newborn shoot and a first year series of shoots for my little girl, and if Kyla had actually honored my maternity shoot appointment (rather than pushing it off on someone else when she found a better customer for my time slot), and treated me in a professional manner, I would have been happy to schedule those 4 additional shoots with her. Obviously I ultimately scheduled them with a different photographer who is reliable, actually returns calls, doesn't give me attitude, and is flexible and professional. I suggest you do the same. read more

I was not impressed with pictures we got. I will not recommend them to anyone. Something my husband could have done with his Sony camera.I don't think photographer was experienced at all. I purchased groupon and feel like it was falsely advertised. When I came to pick up the CD, I was told by Kyla that these will have watermark on them unless I purchase one of their expensive prints packages. I felt very uncomfortable because that's not what I expected. I ended up buying their package so they can release the copyright, but there was barely any pictures that I liked. I had a sunset photo session with my family in La Jolla with Kristina as our photographer during our vacation to San Diego, and we LOVE how our pictures turned out. It was super easy to schedule the appt over the phone, and I received an email with specific instructions on where to meet Kristina a week prior and a phone confirmation the day prior to our shoot. The pictures turned out GREAT, and I really like how Kristina had a ton of great ideas for us for fun shots like running, jumping, etc. We ended up getting soaking wet because the wave swept in on us, but that's mother nature for you. We were trying to get a shot with water kicking up, but the beach was not cooperating with us. We ended up getting the 10 digital prints included in our Groupon and then buying two prints for $100 + shipping. Having been to other photo studios in San Francisco, I am very, very pleased with their reasonable pricing. They are very easy to get a hold of over email / phone and very professional / friendly over the phone. Highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for a great family activity and beautiful images to keep forever! read more

We loved working with Aprill Manriquez and the whole team at Spotlight Studios for our engagement and wedding photos. We won a free engagement shoot and Aprill was our photographer. She made the experience so fun and comfortable for us, and we thought the photos were beautiful so we booked her for our wedding. We were so pleased and loved working with Aprill. She has such an eye for beauty and finding great shots. She has a calm and happy presence, which makes her a joy to work with. She worked with us in the weeks leading up to our wedding to make sure the photos were what we wanted and that everything went smoothly. She invited us out to dinner to get to know us better, which was such a sweet gesture to make our wedding photos more personal. She then mentioned that she'd like to see my Pinterest page for wedding photo inspiration, if I had one. I sent her the link and she proceeded to look through the photos-making comments along the way. I was feeling so excited for our wedding photos! On the day of our wedding, she arrived well prepared with her assistant, her equipment, and print outs of the photos I pinned! She had us recreate most of the shots while also creating our own. Kyla has a very bad attitude and lacks patience overall. She is pushy and rood. She speaks over you which means she does not care to LISTEN to you as a client. She is worse when reviewing your photos. She is fake in her smile as she is anxiously trying to get rid of you. The studio would be better without Kyla. Her work comes out blurry and she will find any excuse to feed you and make you think you are wrong in what you are SEEING. Getting a 16 month old to look at the camera, let alone stay still, is a challenge.....but Kyla didn't skip a beat. She was positive, playful and friendly ....and ended up with some beautiful memories captured through her lens. The best part is that she really listened & understood the 'look' I was hoping to emulate in these pictures. I would definitely recommend Spotlight Studios to a friend. read more
