There is not a time I go to Estes that I don't visit Sprague Lake. It's my favorite place to catch a sunset and I know chances are good we'll spot some moose. During peak season and hours, make sure to grab a Timed Entry Plus pass to access Bear Lake Corridor. The parking lot is large and it's one of the few accessible trails in the park. If you want a little more adventure, it's only a 2-mile hike to the lake from the YMCA. Don't skip on Sprague and if you can time it, sunset and sunrises are the best times to visit.

Such a beautiful place to watch the sunrise. If you are lucky, you may even see a moose or two. Sprague Lake is a scenic lake in Rocky Mountain National Park off the road to Bear Lake. The walk around the lake is so peaceful and tranquil. Lots of information signs to help you identify the mountains, like Hallet Peak and FlattopMountain, and few remaining glaciers that helped carve this park. Loved being able to walk over the boardwalks that traverse the marshes and small bridges over the creeks. The lake is named for Abner Sprague, who started a homestead in 1874. He later opened a lodge for dude ranching, hunting, and fishing. His lodge was incorporated into the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915 and served guests as the Sprague Hotel. In 1919, guests paid $6.00 for a room with a private bath and $1.00 for meals. What a deal. Today, the parking lot stands where Abner Sprague's original homestead existed. Get there early for a parking spot or take the shuttle.

This is by far my favorite place and walk in RMNP - it is a flat, easy trail to take a stroll around a peaceful lake with some of the most outstanding views. Don't get me wrong, everything in RMNP is great, but there is just something about Sprague that keeps me coming back every trip, sometimes more than once! Located on the same road you take to Bear Lake, Sprague is not to be missed! The parking is fairly large but almost always full, so you may need to circle a few times. Savvy travelers know that there are a few additional spots if you head left at the first stop sign towards the horse stables instead of right - not a great option when there are horse rides going on but it is another place to check if the main lot is full. There are bathrooms and picnic tables located in the main parking lot area. Besides great views, some lucky walkers may get to see moose! Make sure to keep your distance so everyone, moose included, enjoys the rest of their day!

we came the first week of Sept 2019. I was having issues with elevation illness and my asthma .. bummer. This was our first time to Colorado and i had so many hikes planned that i wasn't able to do. we were only in this area for 3 days. This is very near Bear lake ... it's another easy short walk around a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. easy walk .. no climbing or hills or elevation changes. good for all ages and places to stop and sit. lovely rocks. I'm no geology major so couldn't tell you what they were made off but colorful and large.

This was the lake I was most looking forward to seeing in Estes park/RMNP. It was beautiful and had so much to see. It was clean and there were plenty of places to rest at if need be.

Awesome trail for the whole family. Stroller friendly. Older folks friendly. Lots of brook trout to watch.

While they're both beautiful in their own right, neither one of them compare to the sheer beauty of Emerald Lake with the snowy mountains as a backdrop. As I said, it is a moderate hike. We started around 930am - would've been nicer to start earlier, but it still beat the full heat of the noon sun. There will be intermittent shade, but make sure you bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. We visited in mid June. Once we neared Dream Lake, we started encountering snow on the ground. I used hiking sandals, and I was able to do it in those - just be careful. That being said, with the amount of snow that was on the trail to Lake Haiyaha was completely un-doable in my shoes. Once you reach Emerald Lake, find a place to sit and just take it all in. I could've sat there all afternoon, just being at peace with nature. Absolutely gorgeous. To get to Emerald Lake, you'll need access to Bear Lake Road. Just be aware that Bear Lake Road requires a reservation SEPARATE from the reservation to the national park. There's a big lot at the trailhead, but it gets filled up. They do have a park & ride a few miles away with plenty of shuttles ready to bring you in. If you're able to make the hike, hiking to Emerald Lake is wonderful. The hike itself is gorgeous, and the final lake is beautiful. Plan it in your schedule, and you will not be disappointed.

This hike starts at the beginning of the Bear Lake trailhead and is 1.8 miles one way (3.6 miles RT). I would say that it is a moderate hike that has some elevation climb to it. You will pass both Nymph Lake and Dream Lake along way. The views along the way are spectacular. Emerald Lake is nestled in between some mountains at an elevation of 10,111 feet. You can see Hallett Peak and the jagged spires of Flattop Mountain across this iconic alpine lake. In between the two mountains is the Tyndall Gorge. There were some small ripples in the water caused but a slight wind. Several people that hiked here jumped in and swam in the water. I ended up relaxing on a large rock and eating my lunch while enjoying the view. Emerald Lake starts at the beginning of the Bear Lake Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. To reach this trail, you must drive ten miles on Bear Lake Road after entering through the Beaver Meadows Entrance. There is a separate timed entry reservation that is required to access Bear Lake Road. If you are unable to find parking at the Bear Lake Trailhead, there is a free shuttle that you can ride to the trailhead.

This was our first stop on our hike heading into the forrest and it was an easy climb. These falls are loud and proud plus incredibly pretty. The falls thunder down Glacier Creek due to the heavy snowmelt. It's definitely a favorite spot for many people as it's only 1.6 miles so it's easy to access. Remember to pace yourself due to the altitude. I witnessed lots of huffing and puffing from people having to stop and catch their breath. We stayed long enough to take some pics and watch the falls and then moved on. Plenty of seating all around the falls for everyone. It's great short hike for those that just want to feel like they are "out there". Views are truly epic as is the entire park. Parking earlier in the day can be challenging. I recomment arriving very early or come later in the afternoon to secure a spot. Remember to pack in, pack out and LEAVE NO TRACE.

This was our first time in park and we came in late May so did not expect all the snow and the slush on the trail so that was really awesome. Lots of elevation change as you climb up and down the trail and several small bridges that traverse all the small mountain springs. We saw a few blooming flowers, blue jays, chipmunks, and we spotted a baby rainbow trout hiding in a little pool in one of the springs. Incredible views of the Rocky Mountains and one you get to the falls it's a nice place to take a nice relaxing break in the many rock formations. Great hike.

Great facilites and this trailhead is a great spot for a bunch of different trails we did the Alberta falls hike and then at the end walk to the bear lake which is only like 300 ft from the parking area. There are only bending machines so there is no food so come prepared. We had a great time yes the bathrooms are stinky but that's a national park for you. Then I did the hike to Alberta Falls followed by the hike to Emerald Lake. All of these trails start at the same place. There is a ranger station at the beginning of the trail that has a park ranger on hand to answer questions and to hand out maps. Bear Lake is so beautiful. The walk around the lake is easy and scenic. The Bear Lake loop trail offers spectacular views of Hallett Peak and the surrounding mountain peaks. Bear lake was formed during the ice age by a big chunk of ice. Keep an eye out for wildlife and other little critters that hang around the lake. I was able to do some bird watching while on my hike. If you don't want to go farther than Nymph Lake, it's still a pretty spot to stop and enjoy. The worst part of the hike for me was that first 0.5 miles. Was still a bit rough the entire way, but it didn't compare to that beginning. Located on the Bear Lake Road, you will need separate reservations to access the road in addition to the reservations to enter the park. The trailhead of Nymph Lake is at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead at the end of Bear Lake Road. It is a large parking lot, but some of Bear Lake's best hikes are all accessible from this parking lot.
