Today we were fishing a stretch of the Big Thompson. A section where a permit is required to enter. We arrived around 8:30, and parked next to a family with two women and two small children. The days here have been unfortunately hot, so I forewent putting my waders on, grabbed my gear, and headed over to my favorite bend in the river. My wife stayed at the car, suiting up in her waders. About thirty to forty minutes into my fishing, my wife came to the beach and greeted me. We chatted for a moment and I could hear an adult and children approaching me. "Excuse me?" She says I turn and greet her, happy to meet another angler. But it went south from there. "I'm a guide here." She says. "Are you familiar with the concept of high holing? Because that's what you just did." I then turn quickly to my wife for some type of weird reassurance as I do not understand the sin I committed against her. If anything, she was coming to "my" spot, though the entire river is walkable and great fishing. I didn't understand. I said "huh? I've been here since before you came on the water." "No you haven't. We got here before you and we were on the river before you." Figuring she didn't see me, I broke it down. "No, I left my wife at the car to suit up and came in here to fish some time ago, in fact yall have been walking towards me this whole time." Now. At this point, she could accept the truth and then apologize, but instead she gaslit me, saying I was not there at all and that I had been alongside them the whole time taking up their fishing space. That's when I got super mad, because I was not lying but she was accusing me of exactly that. Also, I'm a local who has lived here ten years. I work hard and on my days off I love to fish. I DONT love being interrupted by some privileged woman shoving me out of a spot. I dropped an f bomb and said are you effing serious (which was a mistake, and I am sorry to have said that in front of two children. But she did bring her children right alongside her to "confront" me about her space on the river) Also, to approach me and make this accusation, she had to walk past 200 feet of perfect bends and holes and spots on the river to fish. I suspect deeply that because she had children, she wanted my wide open spot of beach so she could watch the children. The really strange thing is???? The river belongs to us ALL. Had she approached in a friendly manner and asked if I minded sharing said spot I would have happily waded up river to fish another spot. But she confronted me, said I broke rules I didn't break in an attempt to encroach on where I was casting, and ruined our peace. She loudly bragged that she is a guide for Sasquatch Fly Fishing. Two weeks ago I met MK out on the same stretch of river and had the nicest conversation and was so excited to learn of her business out at the Y. But when I spoke to the family about what happened they just shrugged and said "whatever". I maintain that maybe just telling your guides not to be bullies and jerks is a course of action. Won't ever be using this shop for guiding, shopping, or any other services as there are plenty of guides I've met on our rivers who were kind, informed, and friendly. This girl just wanted her own spot, and to flex her little "guide" muscles somehow. If you want really great guides, check out Kirk's or Estes Angler. Happy fishing everyone!!! read more

A MUST DO! We had planned an amazing summer and my kids still said this was the highlight! The guides were extremely friendly, great with kids and taught us well how to fly fish. TLDR: I am a fly fishing beginner, by far the best fishing guide service I've used! Sam Rubaker was my guide and he was incredibly professional and entertaining!!! Put me on the trout and I even completed the Slam and caught all 4 species of trout! Listen to your guide they are the pros! He asked if I wanted to go into the park or the private lakes and while RMNP would have been cool he was honest and said the fishing would not be that great with snow melt currently. Sam drive me so I didn't have to worry about where to go. He was extremely knowligable of the local wild life, not just fish, and gave me a lot of great information on the area. I HIGHLY recommend paying the extra money for a private tour. It was just Sam and I and wow was it great! Sam also was sure to take pictures while I fished so I could show off...... I mean have some memories. Sasquatch is incredibly affordable for a guided trip and all the staff I spoke to were great. All gear is provided! Depending on the time of year I was glad I wore jeans and thick ski socks. By the evening the water was very cold but with jeans and the thick socks, it barely felt like anything. Wear sunscreen or stop by the Sasquatch shop to get a sweet hooded long sleeve fishing shirt. They had a sale when I was here. Again I recommended a private guide, more fish and you get to have one on one attention to help with your technique! read more

Huge shout out to Keegan - my son went on a day trip last summer and again this summer with Sasquatch through the YMCA day Camp and got hooked on Fly Fishing. This year he decided he wanted his own set up and was going to use his graduation money to buy it. Keegan took loads of time going over the rod and reel combos they have and all the necessary basic equipment he would need to go out the next day to fish. Keegan was not only knowledgeable but was very patient and answered all my sons questions. He also taught him how to tie a basic knot. Awesome experience for our family of four novice fishermen! Wanted to try fly fishing but had the kids so didn't want anything too serious. This group based at the YMCA was friendly, knowledgeable and made it fun for the whole family. The younger kids use traditional reels while older kids and adults get to try the fly reels. The guides set you up with everything you need, are enthusiastic and there to make sure you catch a fish and have a good time. The little picnic midway thru is right beside the lake and was perfect complete with smores for the kids (and adults). Whole family had a blast and made a great memory. read more

It was a fun experience overall. My 7 year old was bummed he didn't catch anything. They promised they'd take lots of pictures of our group so I wouldn't have to worry about capturing the memories and I could focus on fishing, but unfortunately that was not the case. Not one picture of me actually fishing was taken. As a single mom without many opportunities to have pics taken of ME for a change, I was very disappointed they didn't deliver as promised on that end. They did provide great instruction on fishing and various techniques to try. I'd give it 5 stars if I actually had proof that I did fly fishing, but alas, no pictures to show anyone of that adventure. read more

Best fly fishing tour, ever! This is our second year coming to Estes Park and initially we were hesitant to book through the YMCA. However, after investigating reviews and prices, Sasquatch was clearly the best. The morning we arrived, the business made this very clear. Their staff were very organized and communicated with us frequently up until our guided tour. Our guide was Davis Elliot. He was young, but he was VERY KNOWLEDGABLE. Highly recommend him. We had close to a 2 mile hike to our trout stream. On our hike, he pointed out wildlife and knew a lot about the animals, trees, plants, etc. Which I loved! He worked with my mother and me because we aren't as strong as my father and boyfriend when it comes to fly fishing. All of us caught 4+ Brook trout and it was a beautiful day. This place is AMAZING!! We went on a 3/4 day trip with Kristian and Jason to a river on the other side of the park and it was incredible. The view was incredible, weather amazing, and the guides were friendly, kind, encouraging, and fun. My wife and I did this type of fly fishing trip through the Y ten years ago and it was amazing. We came out to Estes Park and stayed at the Y again with our 4 year old. We booked the evening family fishing trip with dinner and s'mores and I have to say this not only was our favorite part of our trip, but even exceeded our expectations given our last fly fishing experience. They have the schedule down to a science with gear fitting, instruction, practice, dinner, and then fishing (they even had purple waders for my daughter!). All of the guides were so good at patiently explaining what to do and were genuinely excited when anyone caught a fish. Davis was the main guide and he was great at setting us up for success with a great sense of humor. If you remotely are into fishing, mountains, and a cook out, you need to book this trip and will not be disappointed. read more

Our family of 6 went on this trip and had a blast! The guides were enthusiastic, patient, funny, and encouraging. Our two youngest used poles and a net and caught over 15 fish! My daughter is now convinced she's better at fishing than the guides and all her brothers included. The hot dogs and s'mores were delicious and was a great break from fishing. My 2 oldest boys got to use the fly reels and loved it! They now want fly reels and waders to practice with at home. We will for sure do this again and was the highlight of our trip at YMCA! Our group of 11 family members had so much fun fly fishing with Sasquatch! They provided all of the fly fishing gear and dinner. None of us had ever gone fly fishing before, and they made sure that we all caught a fish (or at least got a bite). We had to release any fish we caught, but not before taking some memorable pictures with it. One of the best parts of our trip was that all of our guides had waterproof digital cameras. They took over 50 pictures of us and uploaded them to their website, which we could then view and download for FREE! This is one of the only outdoor companies that I have seen do this! Our guides were Joe, Diane, Connor, and Bri. They were all very knowledgeable and patient. I think most of them are teachers during the school year. Theresa also BBQed our dinner. After two hours of fishing in the afternoon, we took a short dinner break, and were energized for another two hours of fishing. It was an awesome deal for only $35 per person, with the 1/2 day family deal. We also had to pay an additional $9 for the one day fishing license. But it still ended up being cheaper than our white water rafting excursion! We all had a wonderful time fly fishing! read more

Outstanding guides and ratios. Our instructor, Ali, broke down fly-fishing technique so newbies could understand what to do. I've gone with other guides on a couple of trips and none compare to the encouraging, skilled attitudes of these guides. They love their work and helped both enjoy it and even catch a fish. Their prices are awesome and include all your equipment. We did the 1/2 day which included about an hour of Instruction (or extra fishing if you already know how to cast) and 2 hours or more of fishing. They allowed us to stay a bit longer than that so a few more could catch fish. It was so fun. Definitely worth sharing as a couple or family or just a fun new experience for an individual. read more

We signed up to do a fly fishing family cookout with my two young children. We were first timers. Our guide Brandon was fantastic!! So patient with the kids. They had fun. We had a hot dog dinner and smores for dessert. We had one lighting delay (mountain weather is unpredictable) but Brandon and Rich got us back out as soon as we could and even spent some extra time with us to make it up. Kids loved it. Great group to make a fun and successful outing. Have fished with them several times. Most recently did an all day hike and fish. Without the help of Sam, I was toast. Would have never made it. 5 miles up, over rocks and boulders and steep terrain, and 5 then back and a few thousand feet in elevation we're more than I thought this 66 year old man was going to make. Sam made sure I did, even though I wasn't sure. Never hurt so bad, with shin splints, calf pulls, ankle splints, and what felt like broken hips. But, I made it and completed my grand slam on a fly rod in Colorado, thanks to him. Good job, Sam! Won't be physically able to repeat that trip, but I'll never forget it... that's for certain. This is the best deal in the YMCA and Rocky Mountain National Park area. I have now been on trips with Sasquatch three years in a row. The great price, friendly and helpful staff and wonderful experience keeps me coming back and, during the time I am away, pining for the mountains. First, this is a great place to go if you have never been fly fishing before or have the desire to expose your kids to the sport. The staff is comprised of two basic sets of guides, 1) guys who have been fishing their entire life and 2) off season school teachers who have been fishing their entire life. The benefit is that they have an enthusiasm for the sport and the personality that can help educate someone who has never lifted a fly rod before find a way to fish. Second, the price is unbeatable. I have been on trips in a lot of different places and can vouch for the fact that Sasquatch is a great deal. The trip prices includes waders, backpacks, fly rods and reels, flies and the personal attention of a guide. The guides will tie on your flies, untangle the inevitable knots, unhook your fish and photograph you and your catch. The guides will also show you were to put your lures, offer instruction on how to reel in your fish and keep you entertained and motivated throughout the trip. While the service is a bit skewed towards beginners, which makes sense due to the clientele at the YMCA, I have found that they offer a lot as your skills improve. With the confidence of a couple of seasons under my belt, I have taken hiking trips with them to some of the lesser-visited sites in the park. If you know the basics, I highly suggest you take a trip to Sky Pond or Spruce Lake. The views are amazing and the fish literally swim right below you in crystal clear water. Nothing beats watching a trout approach your dry fly and then - WHACK - bite down on it. I almost hate making this review since it will - hopefully - mean more business for Sasquatch and their crew and more people going to those great fishing spots. But, the experience is really something I hope everyone can share. Just be sure not to scare off the Greenbacks in Spruce Lake. read more

We just went on the 1/2 day evening trip and I couldn't wait to write a review. What a terrific experience. My husband and two teenage boys learned how to fly fish in a very short time because of the fabulous guides. I was able to come along and take lots of pictures! We knew we were in for a good time as soon as Joe started talking to us. His excitement and love of fly fishing comes through and gets everyone having fun right away. He, along with the other two guides we were with, Scott and Davis, really took the time not only to teach us how to fish, but actually talked to our boys about their interests and made them feel super comfortable.
