After the office changed its schedule and sent me home early, I respectfully explained that I had committed my entire day to the scheduled shift. In front of the entire staff, Dr. Mika Barlow raised her voice and repeatedly challenged me, saying, "You are an independent contractor prove where I told you that you were working these hours. Show me." The situation was extremely uncomfortable and humiliating, especially being addressed this way publicly in a medical office. My only response was, "I will not accept being treated this way," and I left. I expected a much higher level of respect, professionalism, maturity, and communication from someone with Dr. Mika's years of education and professional experience. Unfortunately, my personal experience was the complete opposite. Experience should be reflected not only in clinical knowledge, but also in how you communicate with and treat the professionals who work alongside you. I don't need to repeat all of the what's been said in a lot of the other low-star reviews, but I'll just give my own snippets: - Weird billing oddities, like the way my insurance was not accurately applied multiple times, resulting in me having to call my insurance and ask if certain procedures were covered (they were) after being told by office staff that they weren't. - Paperwork mix-ups (like my husband's and my middle initials being swapped or an old address from 8 years ago still showing on my records, or me getting all my hubby's appt reminders, etc...and we're not even on the same insurance, so I sure hope they know whose to bill for what!) - Credit on the account that seemed impossible to use. It took asking across multiple appointments for us to be able to have it applied. - That time when the filling (my first cavity in 30 years BTW) fell out sometime between being filled and the next 6 month visit. The dentist, wearing 2 earbuds while speaking with me, shrugged and said, "It just happens." I asked how he was going to make sure it didn't happen again when he filled the cavity a second time, and he said he couldn't really be sure. I canceled the filling on the spot and requested a different doctor to fill the cavity. She was great, but has gone to a different practice (I wonder why?). The good thing is that there are some really sweet hygienists and I've had some of the gentlest cleanings at this practice. They do a new cleaning with just water (???) that feels so much better on my sensitive spots than the scraping tools. Eve made the BEST mouth guard for me 5 years ago. Still fits like a dream. So take the good with the bad, but if you like tidy paperwork and a consistent customer experience, maybe look elsewhere.

Because of this, their availability is extremely limited. I've taken to scheduling my appointments several months in advance. If you have to reschedule your appointment, even 2 weeks out, don't think you'll get an appointment anywhere close to the date of the appointment you're rescheduling. If I'm trying to reschedule an appointment that's 2 weeks away, my rescheduled appointment shouldn't be 4-5 weeks away. Wait times are hit or miss. Sometimes I only wait 5 minutes, other times I've waited up to 40 minutes. The front desk staff are friendly, and I really like the orthodontist. The office is clean, as are the restrooms. I just feel like having such limited availability should've been mentioned on the phone when making my first appointment. If I would've known, I definitely would've gone to an office with more full-time orthodontists.

In my life I've had 10 years of braces, 4 oral surgeries- awake for 4, and a bridge out in due to damage on my braces. I'm not great with this fear. Ok. So three months ago I had the worst jaw pain. Finally got scared and went in. Dr. Smiley sees my husband and daughter, so I asked for her. She was gentle and wonderful and now I'm a proud owner of a night guard that I actually .... Like? Yeah I do. Then, I went in for my first cleaning in 17 years. I was not shamed. More like, they were so positive and kind about how my teeth were in surprisingly good shape. After multiple appeals, insurance still denied coverage based on medical necessity criteria, leaving us with a large balance. Over time, the messaging shifted from confidence that it would be approved to comments that our insurance was "the worst," and eventually we were told the PPO contractual adjustment counted as a "discount," which felt misleading to us. As an aside, a different dentist later completed another crown for me that was approved by the same insurance, which made the earlier comments about our insurance being terrible harder to understand. Separately, this office recommended approximately 10 fillings for me personally. I later obtained a second opinion from another dentist who agreed with 2 recommendations. That large difference made me uncomfortable and contributed to my decision to seek care elsewhere.

I would like to tell you my experience, and hopefully, this review will help you to choose a…read morecompetent and ethical surgeon. I consulted Dr.Patel in Aug 2022, I was not happy with the appearance of my implant and I wanted to improve it, I had an implant on tooth # 8, and his recommendation was to redo the whole process again, meaning take my implant out, and perform a bone graft after the gum healed he then would install a new implant, providing me with a better results. These procedures take time and are very costly. I decided to trust his judgment and do the procedures. He took my implant out and did a bone graft, I paid for a retainer, $300+ retainer, and they told me that they would fix it if the retainer broke during my treatment. Unfortunately, my retainer broke, I called and told them, and they said that they would get back to me, I called again because it was hurting my gum and it was my front tooth, and they ended up telling me that they couldn't replace it, I was confused and I told them they would not fix or provide me with a new one, to seek another provider because the person who made mine was no longer working with them. I was disappointed with how they dealt with this matter, I paid them for a retainer and because they did not have a person to make retainers, they told me to seek elsewhere. The second thing I needed to deal with was insurance, they submitted the wrong code and I had to go through an intense process with the insurance for them to pay for my bone graft. I went in for my implant, I paid the balance due that day before going inside, and they applied anesthesia, I was waiting and the secretary went in and told me a balance was due from the previous bone graft, I was confused and I said the insurance should cover, they said I need to pay or they could not proceed, this person already applied anesthesia and they just now telling me about a balance I had, I ended up paying around $2000k more that day. Later on, the insurance paid me after I found out it was their fault for submitting the wrong code. The third and final horrifying experience was the result of the bone graft, this surgeon permanently damaged my gum tissues leaving me looking like a monster, I am beyond traumatized by the results, I consulted two other gum specialists paying out of pocket and they told me my gum tissue was gone permanently. Dr. Patel initially said he would cover any cost to repair and offered to refund me what I paid out of pocket, I provided him with the estimate and this Dr. ghosted me, yes you read this right, ghosted me, when I called the office, they said to have a lawyer contact him. Please seek another provider, Dr. Patel ruined my smile and now I have to seek other treatments to repair the damage he caused, and on top of that, he is a liar who lacks ethical standards.

When it came time to have my surgery, 3 teeth extracted, one implant, sinus lift and bone graft, Dr. Patel and his staff helped me feel as relaxed as possible. I opted for general anesthesia because who wants to be even remotely awake for that. Dr. Patel was able to do necessary blood draw and iv placement easily which has not happened for me before. He followed up with me and he and his staff were patient and caring. My next two implants don't concern me as much as the care I received has put my mind at ease. My entire dental plan is about 24 months in total and the communication has been great. No guessing as to timing or treatment. Thank you!
