It's a recycling…read morecenter so it's dirty, it's loud, it's busy, it's confusing, they close early (3:45PM), they aren't open weekends, the location can be difficult to get into or out of (depending on traffic), etc... So why the five star rating? They pay good money for your scrap metal and it's relatively quick and easy. I've been here several times over the years. My wife saves all our aluminum cans (crushed and in large trash bags) and other metal scraps. On my most recent visit I had half a dozen or so large trash bags of crushed aluminum cans and some miscellaneous aluminum pieces that netted me about $30. On my previous trip I had cans and some old gutters which got me $44. Okay, you're not going to get rich on this but it makes a difference. The whole experience is pretty quick and painless as it usually takes me about an hour to load the truck, drive to recycling center, unload, get paid and return home. Not a bad payout for minimal effort. The yard is set back from S. Military Hwy. in Chesapeake just east of the Gilmerton Bridge. After you turn off S. Military into the business you will be mostly driving on dirt so don't head over there after a fresh wash job on your truck. Pull up on the scales and give the attendant your name then head into the yard. Make sure you are wearing a face mask or they won't let you in as they have COVID protocols in place. If you aren't familiar be sure to ask the attendant what to do. The attendant will ask you what type of scrap you have then direct you to the appropriate area where you will have to wait for another employee to assist you. It's all pretty quick and painless. You unload your scrap as directed, fear not as they will help you if you need or desire assistance. After you've unloaded just head to the inside scale area as directed where they will weigh your scrap then direct you into the office where you will show the attendant your ID then receive your cash. From there just get back into your vehicle and exit the yard. It's just that easy. All the employees I've dealt with on my visits have been pleasant and very helpful so you don't have to worry about not knowing what to do when you get there. I think it's great to have this facility available where we can get rid of some scrap and get a few dollars. Thank you Elizabeth River Recycling for making it so easy.

In my case, I go before 9am on Saturday and usually I'm there with 3 other washers. The owner is super sweet. Her looks and walk may be deceiving. She looks like a mad lady, but she has a heart of gold and definitely will strike up a convo with you. This is my hand car wash location of choice! Self-service that is. A man came into the facility and just sat inside-not doing laundry?! It made me feel a bit uncomfortable! (He could have been homeless and needed a place to rest?!) Just not a great experience and $7.50 to wash seems pretty expensive!! I could have dropped my laundry off and had it cleaned for that price. Disappointing but did get my items washed, dried, and folded so I guess I'm glad of that! I won't go back there.

In preparation for window installation, boxes of documents were found, obviously placed there by a former house cleaner without my knowledge.:( I've spent days going through the boxes to determine what needed to be shredded & what should be kept or discarded. Needless to say, I've been surrounded by boxes & bags, certainly a tripping hazard for me. Since Eggleston Shredding is only offered M-F until 2pm, it was important to take what I had today. The location is in a multipurpose building on N Military Highway next to their automobile auction lot. The business name is a misnomer sine there are multiple services offered at the location. One pulls their vehicle in front of the building under the 2nd covered drive through which is lined with bins similar in look & size to those used for garbage & recycling. I believe the first drive through may be for donations. You can fill up the entire bin for a flat $45 charge. I didn't know until today that there were smaller bins that have a $25 flat fee. The friendly & helpful employee behind the desk told me that next time I could come in & request the small bin. The documents are very secure as they wheel them back for shredding with a lock placed on the bin. After payment, which is only accepted by credit card, one is provided a Certificate of Destruction. Eggleston is a multi location non profit which specializes in providing individuals with job training in many professions. I highly recommend their bulk shredding services.
