I got a personal trainer and a year long gym membership. I had a freak accident were my leg got injured. I have doctor's report stating that I can't go to work and I am not allowed to stand for more than 15 minutes. I called and talk to the manager and he just wanted to argue and tell me there is no way to cancel. He is more worried about money. Than he is worried about people. I have a doctor's note saying I can't work out or train for 6 months and they will not honor it. The manager just wanted to argue and tell me that I am not hurt and I am lying about it. I would not go here or get a membership. A horrible time with manger and staff. Nasty read more

The response from the business manager concerning my 1st review is based on his lack of knowledge of what goes on at the location here in Newark, NY. The first trainer I was trained by was a competition bodybuilder in his very early 30s. He did not take into consideration that I am almost 60. I trusted his professionalism and now walk with a limp. That trainer started exhibiting symptoms of mental health problems and hat to be escorted from the property by the police. The second trainer put me on a machine WTH too much weight and, I heard a popping sound in my shoulder and have been in constant pain ever since. No one working there seemed concerned. That trainer quit because of the low pay. The third trainer, had me running tires outside, but the tires were placed on uneven ground. The result was that I stepped into a hole and twisted my ankle. Once again, the staff seemed unconcerned. That trainer was fired for inappropriate sexual comments and having sex with clients. Remember, Bernie will ignorantly comment about your review, but you'll have no way to confront him as he keeps his contact info private. No matter where you live, Spunk Fitness is a bad idea. read more

This is an ok gym depending what you're looking for. That being said don't expect much. The staff takes a long time to even acknowledge you when you're standing right in front of them. They also are a bit on the trashy side. Many of the treadmills don't work and there isn't a large variety of equipment. 98% is cardio 1% free weights and 1% random machines nobody really uses. They have male employees showering in the women's locker room which is beyond weird. They just about refuse you to canceling your gym membership. (Boyfriend was trying to cancel due to the fact he joined the army and was being sent overseas). Short hours on the weekends are pretty inconvenient too read more

Motivating yourself to go to a gym is hard enough but at Spunk Fitness in Newark NY, they go that extra mile to make you feel unwelcome as well. Never have I been to a business where the front staff is beyond rude to the point where you should be privileged that they even acknowledge you. I have stood at the front desk for over 5 minutes as they have their own private conversations, when I excused myself for interrupting they told me that they would be with me when they finished talking. I have had concerns about construction in the parking lot and was told to walk. Not to mention, the bathrooms are filthy. If there was any other gym within 10 miles I would be there. ***After writing this review I have received backlash from this facility. They are now refusing to sign paperwork from my medical insurance company verifying my attendance. This is beyond acceptable in dealing with paying clientele. read more

Really enjoy this gym being so close to work I can go on my lunch hour. The guys at the front desk are super friendly and great to talk to. Unfortunately I learned that one of them was recently let go. Im super disappointed as he was one that got things done. Customer service is very important and he was one of the best. Hopefully the manger steps up and can fill those shoes. read more

TERRIBLE CLIENT SERVICE!!!! The General Manager, ANTHONY, does not prioritize client service and has been avoiding me due to an issue I've had. Summer of 2014 I signed up for the no commitment $9.99 membership while I was in town during Summer vacation and when returning to college I forgot to cancel my membership. I called to cancel over the phone and they informed me I had to cancel in person or via mail, so I mailed a letter asking for my membership to be terminated. Although partially my fault for not noticing it was not cancelled, it never was and the 9.99 was deducted monthly from my debit card, which is not why I'm upset. I'm upset because in June of this year, 2015, I went to sign up for a new membership because I was under the assumption I did not have one. The General Manager, Anthony, signed me up for a new membership, which means I was paying for TWO memberships each month. I only was aware because my debit card expired and the OLD membership did not have that on file, so it became a balance due: which they called me for. After discovering the mishap, I was understanding and asked for the previous 9.99 membership to be cancelled. The woman helping me, Jennifer was super polite and wanted the general manager, Anthony, to be the one to call me back in 10 minutes and refund me. I did not ask for a refund, it was offered to me. In fact, I'm still waiting for the 9.99 membership to be cancelled because Anthony is avoiding me and does not care about losing a paying client (who's paid much more than I should've, actually) and will NOT return my phone calls and/or emails. I'm bothered because it was obvious to every person I've spoken with that I had two memberships and no one can explain how this "mistake" happened other than Anthony trying to get more commission and take advantage of the fact I did not notice the $9.99 monthly payment. I do not recommend this gym to anyone who values the way they're treated. read more

Horrible customer service the employees are very rude and unprofessional and the equipment is always broken.

Well I give it one star because the place is horrible there was mold in the shower, and mainly the manager Anthony was rude to me and his employee's working under him. I have seen him workout there during the day and asked a few employee's if he was on the clock and they all said yes he is. When the traffic in the place is busy and one of the front desk employee's needs help instead of helping them he goes out into the gym and yells at an employee for picking up weights, helping customers out with machines or when they are garbing dirty towels and switching them with new ones. Would not recommend this gym to ANYONE! I signed up for a flexible plan where I would be able to cancel at any time (so I was told) and freeze my account for up to 3 months with no charge. During that time, I would be able to resume or cancel. After attempting to freeze my membership the first time, it was apparently too close to the billing date, so my freeze was not effective right away. Instead, I was charged ANOTHER MONTH. Again, something I was not told when I signed up for the membership. I called and called, and the incompetent employees kept telling me they would get back to me. Well no one called me back, and I had to keep trying until someone answered my question. I tolerated the extra month charge. HOWEVER, when I went to cancel recently (while my account was supposed to be on freeze), with over a month left on the freeze, I was told my account would be charged for yet ANOTHER MONTH! Come to find out, my account was still active? The incompetent employees did not freeze my account correctly! I am beyond fed up with this place. I will make sure EVERYONE knows about my experience here, and I will strongly encourage anyone NOT TO SIGN UP FOR A GYM MEMBERSHIP AT THIS PLACE. read more
