I'm gonna guess that was the only customer that took the time to complain that day because you didn't smile even to a customer that clearly comes in there all the time, a smile and an apology and a thank you, and a please goes a long way with people. I would think someone working in the public would know that. ****just so yah know, those documents Ryan says hasn't been used for 15 years....just got some from UPS!!! Hammerpress has a super unique collection of paper goods, candles, soaps, and cards, which makes it a great location for a niche gift. They have beautiful cards for all occasions. There are tons of fancy pens and hand-painted, recycled-paper journals. I droll over all of their carefully curated candles and unique perfumes. This is not a cheap place to shop for a gift, but it's worth it! The recipient of the gift will feel so special and artsy. There is usually plenty of parking on the streets of the West Bottoms, unless it's a First Friday weekend - then expect to have to stroll a far distance, but Hammerpress is located conveniently close to some of my favorite antique shops.

As a college student I'd look forward to an excuse to trek to KCMO from Lawrence to shop here and pick up some local goodies. They've been doing this so long, you could probably even make an argument that they were kind of the original shop local spot here in the city. Flash forward and Hammerpress has migrated from their OG location to further down SW BLVD, and now to this new spot in the heart of the West Bottoms. It had been a while since I visited so I wasn't sure where they had moved to, but it seems fitting that they'd end up in the West Bottoms as many of the artists that once had studios in the Crossroads have migrated that direction as well, and it seems true to both their craft as printers, and their vibe as artists to be in yet another cool, up and coming, hip neighborhood. All of this being said, this new spot is by far their coolest. From the arched entryway, to the bright interior, you're going to find everything you've come to expect from Hammerpress. Beautiful art prints? Check! Locally made greeting cards? Check! other stationary and art goodies? check and check! Next time you need a card go check them out - you won't regret it!

My wife and I walked in this afternoon looking specifically for a dining room set and a wooden rocker but no one offered to help us. We spent about half an hour poking around on our own but couldn't get anyone to help. We're in our mid-fifties and very upper middle class and, I would think, are exactly the kind of customers they would like to have. I guess not. Many Kansas City furniture stores have gone out of business since Nebraska Furniture Mart came to town, but if Traditions fails, it has nothing to do with the competition.

So let me make it simple. Traditions Furniture is a great stop of you like the following: 1. WOOD. Hearty woods, dark and rustic and moody. I knew a few families growing up that decorated around wood and their homes smelled like this store, with a little hint of bacon - strange but I promise it's dead-on. TF doesn't offer any light woods, nothing to brighten a room - it all looks amazing in candle light, VERY cozy and warm surroundings. 2. Nothing modern. Nothing. It's not too feminine with the abundance of leather goods and rigidly shaped lamps. There is no silver, chrome, simple, mod anything. 3. Cheap art reproductions. The paintings were large and well-framed (possibly by the many framing shops around the Santa Fe neighborhood - there is an ungodly amount of them). But among the monolithic pieces, nothing I saw was over $400, and most of it was between $100 and $200. And these are statement wall-hangings here - so their prices are surprisingly affordable if you are looking to accessorize the home. 4. Lamps. Also affordable, and plenty to chose from, was their collection of table lamps, most of which were low-lighting and tasteful, classic pieces. I found a few African-inspired and Victorian style lamps I thought were interesting and for only $25 to $50! AND they offer a coupon at the door that cuts the price of one home accessory item by 25% until after December 1st - so jump on it. 5. Traditional Christmas decorations. They had huge wall hangings with phrases like, "Hearts come home for Christmas" and "Your husband just called and he said you could by anything," (how dark ages is that last quote?!) They also had tons of those collectible Santa dolls some women like so much around this time. You know - I would love this place more if it were a little more Comfort Sofa and a little less "this is the men's smoking room."
