Mural of Andy thru his career. Artist spray painted this in 2 weeks.

Take a ride through Mayberry (Mt Airy) in a squad car. See where Andy lived as a boy and called home. The driver showed us a lot of sites and gave us information about how Andy incorporated much information from his childhood into the Andy Griffith Show. We really loved the tour and would do it again. By the way, when the driver asks you a question about the show and you get the answer wrong, he turns on the siren. Just remember to bring cash because they don't take credit cards.

I took my mother and sister on the squad cart tour and we had a wonderful guide... Mike showed us so much, and had so much information about Mayberry and the characters of the show. He also showed us the largest quarry in the world of granite, which was extremely interesting. I highly recommend riding in one of his squad car replicas on this tour. I love how he turned on the siren as we rode through the town. Also, don't forget to stop and have a lunch at "snappy lunch", in town. That was another highlight.

We loved the squad car tour! I highly recommend it. The whole town is great! We ran into a llama down town and had a lot of fun with him and his owner! Loved everything and everyone we met! Only wish we had more time and didn't have to rush through everything.

He drove us from Boone NC to DC to NYC and then 80% of our return trip back to Boone NC. Due to federal regulations we had to get a relief driver to finish our trip. And that's where the concerns began. Phillip our relief driver was just plain dangerous and at times was driving more than 15 MPH over the posted speed limit. His driving was erratic and jerky. We mentioned to him several times that the police liked to patrol the area he was in and that since he was clearly speeding it wasn't going to have a good outcome. When we arrived at our final destination all of our participants had to remain seated and on the bus so he could go to the back and use the restroom. We all just wanted away from him! His actions were extremely dangerous for everyone aboard. He has no business driving a tour bus.

A Picture-Perfect Pit Stop at the Virginia Welcome Center…read more One of our favorite traditions on long road trips is stopping at welcome centers as we cross state lines, and the Virginia Welcome Center ended up being the standout of our entire trip north. Easy on, easy off the highway, plenty of space to move around, and a layout that makes traveling with a dog a breeze. Visiting in November was perfect. The whole place looked like a Bob Ross painting come to life -- leaves everywhere in shades of red, orange, and yellow, with wide walking paths stretching through the trees. Our dog was in absolute heaven, running through the leaves and exploring every corner of the trails. The welcome center itself has interesting history and signage to browse, and while the building and bathrooms are standard fare, the real magic here is outside. The walking paths, green space, and peaceful atmosphere make this an ideal spot to stretch your legs, breathe in the fall air, and reset before continuing your drive. A beautiful, refreshing stop and easily one of the best welcome centers we've visited. Highly recommend pulling over here -- especially in the fall -- for a peaceful break during your road trip.
