    Zipping through the trees!

Words cannot begin to describe the wonderful, exhilarating experience I had here! My mother and I had been looking for something out-of-the-ordinary to do for our rare day off together, but also something equally as affordable. After hearing rave reviews about zip lining, we pursued the activity and looked into a variety of zip lining locations around North Carolina and neighboring states that Groupon had to offer. We called multiple places for rates, available scheduling times, and asked about the zip line courses, and it was clear that our best option would be Carolina Zipline Canopy Tours in Westfield, NC. I spoke to Barbara on the phone, who was more than happy to accommodate my mom and me, and gave me a variety of time slots that I could book and was so sweet to answer my barrage of questions about zip lining, procedures, weather, what to wear, etc. She gave a genuine "I can't wait to see you guys here!" If I wasn't already excited enough to go zip lining, I was even more excited to meet the Barbara and the guides! The facility was situated next to a beautiful farm with friendly farm animals and a lovely hillside view of former bed and breakfast and a looming tree canopy that I couldn't wait to get up in. We simply signed a waiver, got our harnesses on, and waited for a few others that we would be grouped with for our zip line tour, while being entertained by our hilarious and knowledgable guides, Scott, Christian, and Megan. After everyone was harnessed, we headed out. A short safety briefing and a few training lines later, we were zipping through the trees on 13 or so lines and having the time of our lives! Our canopy tour ended a little over one and a half hours later with a line running back to the main facility, and was completed by an ice pop at the end. We couldn't have been more appreciative of our fantastic guides, Barbara, and the whole Carolina Zipline crew that made sure our experience in the trees was fun, safe, and the best unforgettable experience we could ask for. We can't wait to return! As a PS... This was also a very family friendly place - we had a younger girl of nine in our group who went with her dad (for the second time!) and had almost as much fun as all of us combined!

Great trail for walking, running, walking the dogs or riding a bike. The Old Salem section of the Strollway is a 5 star. The trail takes you right past Old Salem. You will pass right by the Old Salem Visitors Center and the Heritage Bridge. You can cross over the street using the bridge and visit Old Salem if you like. The trail in this section is wide enough for all people coming and going. If you follow the Strollway south you will end up at the Greenway, which you can take to Winston-Salem State or Salem Lake to the west, or Washington Park to the east, but that is another review. You do have to cross over a busy street (Salem Avenue) but there is a nice wine shop on the other side. The northern route past Old Salem takes you to downtown and ends at 4th Street. This takes you under Business 40 and past Corpening Plaza park. Nice part of this section is you end up right into the heart of all of the downtown restaurants on 4th Street. This section requires crossing 3 streets in downtown. The only reason I don't have the Strollway rated 5 stars is the section running under Business 40 can be a little sketchy. This will change after the Business 40 renovations are completed.

The Tour of Naples is a full immersion experience!…read more It starts off with a toast and the restaurant folks are excellent hosts. We learned how to make the Negroni cocktail and they took time to teach the flaming orange. Including a lot of interesting history and information about the spirits. The instruction on making the pizza and cocktail was so thorough that we felt like we really did something, while we learned in action. Worth the time and money. *they did ask if anyone is dry, but not sure what they offer in lieu of the cocktails or wine.

Ned provided us with great information about the history of the town, the railroad (although some of that was incorrect as he kept saying Raleigh instead of Norfolk as it pertained to the railroad and it kept saying that one of the railway companies "left" when in fact, they were merged. Maybe this wouldn't have mattered so much except someone in our group was very familiar with the railroad) But Ned was very personable and you could tell he loved history and as we do too we really enjoyed his tour. The food on the tour was fairly varied and unique to the town (a must!) and it was great to hear the back story of the ownership of the restaurants. (I was a little worried when at the first two restaurants we were served seafood dishes, a seafood bisque and shrimp and grits as one person in our group doesn't really like seafood and I think this is a risky choice for a tour. Also at Chocolate Paper we were given two mediocre Asher chocolates to try instead of some of their more expensive and more delicious Debrands chocolates.) One person in our group thought there wasn't enough food and thought another restaurant or two should be added. I tend to agree when compared to the cost of this tour against other tours I've taken. Had the cost been a little lower I think the amount of food would've been fine. All in all, a great tour though. Ned really was a great guide, I hope he leads more tours, I really learned a lot!

Religious migration of MORAVIANS from the North Eastern states. And ultimately the MORAVIAN RELIGION hails from Germany from the 1400's. Their church emerged from the Hussite movement, which predated Martin Luther's Reformation by over 50 years. This park honors a long heritage, that laid the foundation that predates both Winston and Salem, now Winston-Salem. This public park hosts several festivals a year. And it hosts outdoors summer concerts that can be held under a open air shelter. Great for families and peoples or all ages and their pets. Nice and flat for strolling. The grounds houses structures and reconstructed structures from the original settlement back to 1753. Several of the structures house demonstrations for the living skills needed back then: food production, black smithing, etc. A modern welcome center has a model reproduction of the center and is a sort of mini museum. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to educate. There are presentations in the center on the history. Nice bathrooms are there also. And a limited # items are available for purchase and I believe funds go to support the park. The main old structure is a house of worship with an organ that dates from very early on. Consider HISTORIC BETHABARA a quicker trip that to say WILLAMSBURG in VA (granted that is larger and more historically important on a National Level) but nonetheless a way to take a quick step back in time. Also consider OLD SALEM a little to the south in Winston-Salem. Another MORIAVIAN SETTLEMENT (really a follow on, since BETHABARA was meant to be temporary whilst SALEM was planned to be permanent). More along the lines of a mini-WILLAMSBURG. With a reopened TAVERN restaurant. And historical sites and demonstrations to experience. And SALEM is the home to the 1st ever official 4TH OF JULY celebration in the Nation. And back to HISTORIC BETHABARA, take a stroll through the vegetable garden housing genetically same fruits and vegetables that were grown back in the 1700's. Salem also has the same type of gardens.

The docents were outside and inside the various village houses demonstrating activities and general living in the period of the time around 1700s authentically dressed in period attire. Such a nice sunny day to bundle up and experience what the villagers had to offer as you stood by the fires to watch how candles were made, forging iron, eating samples of cookies, Johnnie cake and such. The demonstrations were very informative as the docents told how normal day to day chores, cooking, schooling, spinning wool, drying fruit and veggies were prepared for use in the winter when produce couldn't grow. All the buildings were open so you could get out of the cold and go inside to listen to the informative history and see the furnishings and displays of the day. The live music and the decorations really helped put me in the holiday mood. Make a point of checking out life at Bethabara Village and walking around the grounds. Lots to see and paths for walking with you and your doggo if you like. Note that the buildings aren't always open except special events but you can go see the village all year round and sightsee or for walking in the area.

He is not, he is extremely annoying. he talked much too much, even during the so-called quiet time. He played to the women near the front who laugheed at everything he said. One day he was chit chatting with the driver, while our great driver was in control of a large vehicle with 35 people aboard! Do not distract our driver with pointless conversation. He shoved his religion in our faces, a captive audience, for three days. Yes, the website says that each day is started with a devotion. But he started with a prayer, added a "devotion" that sounded like a sermon later, grace before each stop where a meal was involved, played gospel music on Sunday morning, followed by a religious movie that no one was watching, The people around me talked a lot and simply raised their voices to talk over the movie. The noise level was stressful. To top it off, after a stupid bingo game where everyone was getting a prize, I did not get a prize. (I did not care, for the record). So he gives me a plastic Jesus and tells me I can be saved. Does he know what my religious beliefs are? Arrogant, presumptuous, insulting. He persisted in grilling a young boy - the only youth on our trip- about the denomination of his church. The boy was not answering and Gary did not let up. We were told to "read the itinerary" if we asked questions about times. He called me out by name over the mic when I asked. And then changed the departure time once he thought about it. When he was using the mic, he would stand facing the back, and often stand at my row, taking a half step into my already very tight leg space. When his leg was against mine, I moved as best I could. So did he. I regret not grabbing that mic and calling him out on his obnoxious behavior. Too many silly games, too much talking, too many stand up comedian attempts. I just wanted to talk to my friend and read my book. The bus, despite being new - the guide has us guessing how much it cost. seriously? - has bare bones amenities. The seats are equivalent to economy plane seats, no back support, tight leg room, no WiFi. I unfortunately had a front seat but the people in the back said they could not hear most of what the guide was saying. The food was abysmal - truck stops, food trucks, and Crackerbarrel where I had the worst meal of the three days. The itinerary was fine; I don't expect to love every stop on a set itinerary tour. Our driver was great - Darren was efficient, professional, and very pleasant. CT will never see me again.
