Finally a great coffee shop in my end of town! They definitely know how to make a fabulous latte here, and I believe they use 49th parallel beans. If you're up for flavoured lattes, they make a vanilla bean paste as well as a coconut cream sauce that I imagine make delicious lattes. The space is pretty amazing. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's an incredibly huge space, dark but welcoming. The most seating I've seen in any Edmonton coffee shop, complete with local artwork, games, and a piano. I'm so happy I now have to only drive 5 mins for good coffee!! read more

Normally I love this place. Usually great coffee and great staff. Today was a poor experience, and makes me not want to come back. I ordered an ice mocha. The barista made a hot mocha, which is fine mistakes happen. When I told her it was iced, she blankly stared at me said nothing and made me the iced coffee. I said thank you and she never said anything and acknowledged my existence after I told her it was supposed to be iced. During when she she was making my drink she was clearly whispering to the cashier. This made me really uncomfortable and guilty for asking for what I wanted. read more

I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Square 1 and finally, a great independent café in southwest Edmonton has opened! Occupying the old Grub Med space a feature wall of tiles subtly hint to the institution that was here but the renovations speak to the future. I visited with my mother and we both enjoyed the people, the atmosphere and, most importantly, the coffee. Friendly, warm service separates Square 1 from the nearby chain coffee houses and establishes that neighborhood meeting place feel. I didn't try any food, simply a cappuccino and a lemon water. The cappuccino was on point, comparable to Credo, Transcend and Little Brick/District. The space is very big and almost seems like they need more tables to fill it up - but for now it keeps things very spread out (giving a bit of welcome privacy when conversing). I highly recommend checking it out. I can see this becoming a neighborhood institution. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed square 1 yet - I come here all the time and I love it! It's the perfect cafe for anyone, and it has a great atmosphere. It's kid friendly (I always see little tots waddling around the place) and it's great for studying and for socializing. They have a bunch of outlets and big tables if you need to get some work done and they have open mic - which is so cool - if you're going to socialize. I usually get their drip coffee which is really good and a little strange! It tastes like miso soup, no lie, which if you like miso soup is a unique surprise. They have a really good pistachio biscotti that just melts in the coffee as soon as you dip it. It's really good and the white chocolate gives a good balance between sweet and salty. Last time I went I got their strawberry - kiwi steeped tea and my mom got their latte. The latte was a latte, nothing super unique there but what I found awesome was the tea! It quite literally smelt like koolaid and it packed such a punch of flavor - it was sweet almost to the point of being tart and for someone who isn't a huge tea person (because usually it just tastes like faintly flavored hot water) this was awesome. I'll definitely be going back for that - and it was a raw steeped tea too so there were no extra sugars or additives - just a strong fruity tea, loved it! Retro style cafe tucked away in a residential area! The place is huge with tons of comfy seating. And lots of easy customer parking. Prices are average- I ordered a latte and it was a generous size. I also asked the worker and he recommended the raspberry/apple muffin- it was good! They also offer a points system through an app which you can redeem over time for drinks. My friend and I were meeting up for coffee, and she had suggested this neat little cafe as an alternative to our typical Starbucks or Second cup. I was pleasantly surprised by the great atmosphere here. What a great find! Atmosphere: 4/5 This cafe is a little hidden, so I would never have expected such a busy place in this otherwise quiet area of town. We were here on a Saturday afternoon, and I cannot believe the volume and diversity of patrons here. Very nice place with lots of seating, great wall art, books, interesting decor, and generally a casual but quaint feel. Great for big groups, small groups or individuals. Apparently there are open mics and various events here at different times also. The only problem was a little difficulty finding a seat on this busy day so we ended up close to the entrance which was a bit chilly! Food: 3.5/5 I only had a herbal tea here so cannot comment too much on the food items or coffee. I like the variety of teas and small food items including daily specials. There is definitely something here for everyone. Ok, first I'm going to start by saying how disappointed I am in myself for not knowing about his cafe sooner. Such a cool little spot! Tucked in a strip mall off of Fairway Drive, I didn't know what to expect driving up tot he parking lot. As I walked up to the entrance, I noticed they have a cute little patio which would be perfect on a warm summers day. The decor is very cozy and kinda rustic chic I guess you could say. They have nicnacs jewelry and some cute coffee merch for sale. Furniture is a mix of modern and vintage. I love that they have a comfy bench to sit on while you are waiting by for your order (for those who take it go to). You notice the menu on the black board at the back right away and to the left they have a small display case filled with baked goods. Menu has all of the standard bevy's (cappuccino, macchiato, latte, brew coffee, tea, london fog etc.) but they also have a list of simple syrups that you can add to spruce up your cup of joe of whatever it is you order. I went with a cappuccino (shocker, I know), a breakfast sandwich and a cinnamon twist looking thing. Oh, and treated myself to a homemade earl grey caramel as well...yum! Cappuccino was roasted and foamed to perfection and the cinnamon twist was ooey gooey and all kinds of delicious. Breakfast sandwich was nicely grilled like a panini with melty cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and a fresh fried egg. Um YUM. This cafe is truly a gem and I cannot wait to go back! read more

Very cosy. Like stay in the living room at home. The chai latte is not that sweet, which I like, and with a strong taste of milk. However, the only bit of disappointing thing is that it is made from the concentration instead of the real spice. The enamel cup of the brewed coffee is really lovely. read more

Cute little coffee shop in a convenient location with tons of seatings. I paid less than $9 for a large (16oz) and a homemade muffin, which was more than reasonable. Both were tasty. Although I don't usually go for flavoured coffee, coconut cream made in house sounds delicious. I'll be interested in coming back to try that as well as a flat white. Although the food selection is small with a soup (was told that it's usually ready between 11 and noon) and some sandwiches, I appreciate the idea that they keep the menu simple and focus on its quality. Come for the atmosphere, stay for the cinnamon buns. I bought a cinnamon bun with the intention to take home, share and eat bit by bit but made the mistake of tasting it with my coffee. My gluten-sensitive stomach complained minutes after devouring it, but it was worth it. I also ordered the in-house gluten free square and a latte. One of my friends had the grilled tuna melt and said it was delicious. The other wolfed down her cinnamon bun before I arrived. The coffee was good. My friend loved her latte. Square 1 has instantly become my favorite local coffee shop. I liked it as soon as I stepped inside. It's very spacious and the decor is a blend of vintage and rustic. It feels very cozy and homey, a pleasant place to relax with your friends. There are plenty of tables and chairs, including a sofa and a coffee table in the center of the room. There is even a little cart that contains games like Scrabble and Cribbage. I prefer my coffee cold and the iced mocha latte I had here the other day was just incredible. Square 1 doesn't just sell coffee and pastries, but the owners also support local artists. Go inside and you will see beautiful paintings, jewelry, and other handmade goods available for purchase. Overall, the hubster and I really like Square 1. The place has good drinks and good customer service. read more

The decor and look inside is like no other place I have been in Edmonton. It is very cool and unique looking. I loved the decor! It is huge and very open. Lots of space to visit and have a private conversation. There is also a piano in the corner. It was extremely inviting! It was my first time visiting and I wasn't sure what to get. I let the girl at the register know that and she didn't seem to care. I was hoping for a recommendation. I'm not sure if it was her first day or she didn't want to be there. I ordered a vanilla bean latte and a strudel. I got it to go. But the strudel came on a plate. The latte had a cool design in the foam. That was neat. It was very yummy, didn't need to add anything to it. I would go back to give it a second chance but it wasn't anything spectacular. read more

This is a nice place to grab a drink. The whole decor and setup are really nice - it has a relaxed, chill vibe, very open, lots of wood in it... it almost reminded me of like, a cabin or something, but fancier. There was art and jewelry by locals on display (and for sale); I just loved it. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful, not rushed or anything, even though there were a decent amount of people there and just the 2 baristas. I got myself a salted caramel latte, and it was quite tasty. The prices here are pretty average, so that's all good too. I had a laugh cos I noticed the one barista going to do a fancy design as she was pouring it, and she messed up & just sort of squiggled it out with the milk, and gave it to me with this look that seemed like she was hoping I didn't see that :P It gave me a good chuckle :) I have a weekly appointment nearby this place and I've pretty much resigned myself to getting a coffee here every week :P I'm not sure I could say no to popping in here again if I wanted to :P read more

The first thing you would see when you get out from your car is the gorgeous patio and those beautiful string lights. As you enter you would see this rustic door that make you feel like your entering a beauty old house. Inside it has a golden chandelier in the middle and pendant lights on the ceiling. You would tables and chairs that are made of wood. Lots of accent chairs as well and table. You would see console table and mirror and garbage bins made of tin that add more flavour to the whole concept of the store. Overall the the store is gorgeous. I had my favourite large chai latte to stay. Beautiful art on my latte. Flavourful and smooth. Love the foam. Very soft and fine texture. It cost me $5.50 for one cup which is not bad at all. If you hate noise I wouldn't recommend this place. The good thing is they have enough chairs and tables to accommodate all their customers. It's too busy and it would hard to find a parking spot. The location has a decent parking space but it was full when I was here. I'm not sure if they have wifi. Use my own personal hotspot when I browsed my laptop. When I searched for wifi I only saw Shaw and telus. I'm not sure if one of those is their wifi. I didn't bother to find out. Overall I love this place. It's just 5 minutes drive from my home. So I would definitely come back here when I need to do some paper works. I didn't took photos of the store. It's just too many people. Lol read more

Since discovering this café on Saturday, I have been back on Sunday and again today (Tuesday) because despite being a bit of a café addict, making a point of finding the best Edmonton has to offer across town, this place has the smoothest lattés in town hands down! What I mean by this is that with each of the Coconut creme, cinnamon, and vanilla bean lattes that I have tried so far (I spoke with the chef and they are NOT made with standard syrups, but housemade flavour/ recipes FRESH), I have had to forcibly stop myself from guzzling them down. The espresso is flavorful without the usual bite, the flavour sweet but not overwhelming. Furthermore, the cafe itself is BEAUTIFULLY furnished and great for coffee with friends, getting some work done, or even playing a few of the stylish antique board games. Truly, a new treasure of the Edmonton Café scene that is yours to discover! read more

VERY POOR POOR management by both the owner and manager This is in response to a review earlier today by Kat. I also spoke to both the manager and owner about the extremely rude and condensing manner in which family of mine was treated today. It was even explained to us that the employee in question has had 3 complaints recently. The response to Kat tries to pin the bad service on neurodivergent personallity of the said employee. This is lie as the owner already said that this employee had no mental issues or handicaps. He was simply not good at customer service. I would expect that the owner and management take responsibility for what happened and not try to divert the conversation into issues that have nothing to do what happened. I went there for a coffee/meeting on a cold Tuesday just before noon. The decor was warm and I was surprised by how many people was there, which made it alive. It was not overly crowded due to the size of this place. The coffee are very good but definitely not cheap especially with milk substitute. It was a good find as most people seemed to be working on something in little groups and therefore made it feel like a Hip workshop. I'll definitely go back for my next meeting. read more

This is our favourite coffee shop in Edmonton! Maybe because it uses and sells Vancouver based 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters, or maybe it's the 90's Central Perk decor and vibe, but my husband and I find ourselves continuously coming back here for their fresh and always changing muffins, and delicious coffee drinks! Tucked away in a small strip mall, it is very unsuspecting, but the busy shop with a variety of clientele, gives away what a hidden gem it truly is! The sandwiches are also very good, I quite enjoyed the roast beef, and I will never forget the lavender muffin I had a few weeks ago.. *drool* read more

In the past year I have been to Square 1 Coffee in the afternoons and evenings several times, always with excellent service, drinks, soup, and/or pastries. I love the atmosphere; not too "cool" just warm and friendly. They are a welcome, and much needed, addition to the 'hood and I love that I can walk or ride my bike there. read more

The neighbourhood, independent café we have been dreaming of! Cappuccino, macchiato, and mocha are all top notch, with the milk steamed and blended just right. A nicely shaded patio area for summer. Espresso drinks, teas, soups, sandwiches, delicious cookies all made from scratch on the premises and (in my experience) with love. Very good WiFi. The family that runs this business really cares about quality and the happiness of their customers and staff. The result is a welcoming, relaxed, homey spot where community groups gather. Just off the ground, this business is still working on the details and open to hearing your opinions. (Iced coffees appeared almost instantly on the menu after just one mention.) At busy times, the need for more sound absorption is apparent. The current menu is very limited, and often does not include great vegetarian options, but the sandwiches, soups, and baked goods I have tried so far have been delicious, well balanced, and impressively inventive.
