Pumpkin Tart and a Mocha with a frog on it :D

Oh my god the coffee and snacks and everything is so good, the atmosphere is super nice, it's never really that loud in here, and the staff is super friendly. I especially like that typically the atmosphere is calm and quiet because I am sensitive to noise. I'm SO happy that one of my mom's friends introduced me to this place, it's one of my favourite local to me places to take people to for a nice outing. It's a coffee house so there is of course, coffee, but also there's many options for non-coffee folks too :D This place has never failed to satisfy the cafe itch I get sometimes, and it's not prohibitively expensive! Tasty AND affordable! All around just a good place I love it here.

Anvil Coffee House, located at 6148-90 Ave NW in Edmonton. It is one of the latest coffee house I visited lately, but which I have known for a while and finally visited to have a coffee. I drank a latte and later the Anvil fog, which is similar to a London Fog. Both were very delicious drinks and would have anytime in the future. Both drinks and foods are sold at this location, so definitely a good place to be if you are a student, or even meeting with friends or family. Local craft and artworks are sold as well - so you surely get to encourage locally made items. The atmosphere at the coffee shop is very enjoyable. The noise is fairly quiet, so you get to enjoy the place a lot. Service was another good point at Anvil Coffee House - it was excellent and friendly, fast and very professional. Finally, Anvil coffee house is a very enjoyable place to have food and delicious drinks, and the company you have.

Decided to search up a non chain coffee shop this morning with some time to kill before a physio appointment. AND BOY OH BOY am I glad I did! Anvil was absolutely lovely! Everything from the dog friendly shaded patio, to the local artisan artwork and trinkets for sale, to the welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the July special - Iced macadamia rose latte, hubs the hot London fog, and we shared a pistachio croissant heated up. I noticed they have a loyalty card if you are a reguskr and even a blue heart program if you are in need of a "boost" (check out the pic I posted explaining). Staff were lovely and checked in with us before we left. They offer to go or to stay non disposable cups. I also always love a place with cheeky signs and phrases adorning the walls. Two thumbs up ANVIL, way up! PS If you can, pay cash to help them out to avoid card fees ;-)

I'd read the reviews but had no idea Anvil was so nearby. What a find! This place is inviting, airy and cute. The staff are friendly and chatty which is essential in a local coffee shop. There are quite a few tables and ample plug ins for those looking to do a bit of work while grabbing a breakfast sandwich or lunch. I had a peppermint tea which came in the nicest big ceramic cup that really keeps the heat in. The tea strainer was very clever too - no mess, just flip it upside down and there are no spills. I stuck around longer than expected so I got lunch - cuban sandwich with turkey, ham, provolone, dill pickle, mayo and mustard. It was a really tasty sandwich and they toast automatically. I had a London Fog to wash it down. Delish.

This is the Pesto Sammie. It's a tasty and light breakfast.

I ordered a Sammie (breakfast sandwich) and a coffee . The coffee was nice although it went down too fast. Refills are $2.10. There is a choice of three breakfast sandwiches and each are either $5.50 or $5.75. Mine was the pesto sammie and it was very good. I like that it was not premade but rather made fresh. It was really tasty and I would rate it in the top five in the city (and I've eaten a lot of breakfast sandwiches). It's a bit noisey due to the hard walls and the many customers but we could still talk. They have free WiFi and lots of small tables. I noticed a sign for wine so if coffee is not your thing then something a bit more complex is available. If I lived nearby I would become a regular customer but it's a fair drive from home. From my one visit I can certainly recommend Anvil, especially if you are in the east end of town.

So good, couldn't wait to take photo!

Met up with a girlfriend for a coffee date here. Was pleasantly surprised to find such a cheery and modern independent coffee shop in this East Edmonton neighborhood. Much like many other coffee shops, they were displaying/selling local art, which covered their long wall. Unlike most other coffee shops, I nearly brought a piece of art home. The pieces were all fabulous upcycled expressions, many of which used kitchen gadgets (ie. wooden spoons) in really bright colours! If you're an artist wishing to display/sell locally, I highly suggest seeing whether Anvil will be willing to work with you. Their eye for curation was impeccable! The ladies behind the counter were friendly, helping me work out a "chocolatey but not sweet" espresso-based beverage. I went with their mocha, which I believe uses house syrup. It was bitter and chocolatey, with just the right pinch of sweetness! I also had a black Americano, my standard coffeeshop test, and they passed with flying colours! I'll definitely be coming back!

This quiet coffee shop is tucked away unsuspectedly in Ottewell plaza, neighbors to a Rexall, Vet clinic, and small grocery. I didn't know it existed until my friend (who lives in the neighborhood) mentioned it to me! I came in last week with her to do some studying, and it was overall a pretty decent experience. They have cute decor in here, chalkboard menus, quite a bit of seating, and a big yellow piano that holds straws, honey, milk, other condiments. The decor is all coffee based with a little picture frame on the wall that says "break in case of emergency"- but it has coffee beans in it. Cute. They also have local art on the walls which is nice! It's well lit with nice primary colors brightening up the area. Nice to see a coffee shop that's not monochrome! I ordered an Italian soda and they have a few syrups to choose from. They've also got hot chocolate, lattes, americanos, drip coffee. Things are priced between 2 and 6 dollars, which is, I guess, average for a small coffee shop. They've got a little fridge with bottled iced teas and small smoothies as well as pastries such as cookies, croissants, cinnamon buns. I think they're stock varies on the time of day and when they run out they run out. They also sell lunch food, and have a rotating menu for special sandwiches. When I came in it was peanut butter week, and they were offering sandwiches like PB&J, PB & banana, and PB & pickle. They have a fridge in the front and they make things with fresh ingredients. It's a little pricey for what you get, though. They have wraps and other sandwiches as well, and a soup of the day. My friend got the Greek wrap and I had a peanut butter banana sandwich. We both agreed that they were nothing really that special, but not bad by any means. The girl at the till wasn't overly friendly and it was quite busy so you could tell she was focused on feeding customers rather than chatting. My sandwich took quite a while but she apologized and said it would be ready soon which was fine since I was staying to study. When another girl came on shift they were both quite chatty, a bit distracting but overall not a huge problem. Just would have been nicer to receive friendlier service- that was the type of thing I expect from a second cup, not from a local shop, if you know what I mean. Lots of families come in here- it's clear that this is a new shop in the community for a reason. They have lots of community events here and it's a nice little place to stop by at if you're planning on going for a walk in the area. Parking is abundant as well! If you're in the area and don't want to hit up the usual Starbucks, give this place a try. It has a lot of potential, and I'm excited to see it grow over the next while!

It's the season for anything apples, so I was happy to find a caramel apple cronut & went for a classic grick middle (as per their website & one of my favs - Fried Egg, Bacon, Rosemary Aioli, Smoked Cheddah, Tomato Jam, Arugula). Sadly with a cane & a reuseable bag, I couldn't take a coffee to go (stair logistics are hard enough) but it's always a great cup when I do have a free hand. Oh, I should mention in case I've never did in previous reviews, neither of these food options are something one wants to eat when trying to look presentable. As it's deliciously messy! There's a few bar seats at this location but it's best to take your food to go. At this particular location (there's 4 locations now!) there's no accessible entrance (nor exit). Kind of baffles my mind on why they didn't build a ramp with the newer set of stairs at the exit door. I even made the comment that it's really too bad they don't use the order window on the side (like they did in the pandemic), for us that need to avoid the challenge of stairs. There's also no railings on the steps, so be sure footed in wet & winter conditions (even if you're not disabled). So as much as I love the food & coffee at Farrow, I have to leave it as it's a place I'm going to only on a randomly decent mobility day for the knees & legs.

It's located in Whitemud Crossing which is the same strip mall as the Public Library is located except Hungry Birds is on the opposite side as the library. There are two or three tables but this is clearly a takeout café. The owner greeted us as we arrived and then explained how the menu worked. There are noodle bowls, grilled wraps, soups and salads. We opted for the noodle bowls. He then asked what size (small, medium and large). Then we chose the vegetables and meat. I had the marinated beef and my wife had the chicken. We had a choice of two types of noodles to select from or rice. Finally he asks what kind of sauce and whether or not you want cheese on top; the cheese is an add on. We also ordered a bowl of Wicked Thai Soup. I was impressed that he put the soup into a pot to heat it up rather than just scooping it directly from the soup pot. This ensured that it was hot . Once we got home we found all of our orders were quite hot. More importantly we all agreed that the noodle bowls were delicious and for the most part, nutritious. This was my first visit to Hungry Birds but it won't be my last visit. I have no problem giving them four stars.

PALS!!! I have been a huge fan since their opening day in 2022 and it's about time that I finally…read morewrite about them! Part of the venerable Strathcona restaurant monopoly of The Next Act (the OG), Meat (the meaty one), Pip (the brunchy one), and Marlo (the taco one), Pals holds their own as the sandwich one. This five-restaurant stronghold wouldn't work if each and every one of them wasn't so dang good. But they are. Pals showed up on the scene after Pip moved across the street and there was enough room in the building to fit a delightful little sandwich shop in there as well. Pals to the left and Pip to the right - and one (beautiful) shared washroom downstairs for both. It's a pretty harmonious arrangement as far as I can tell! Pals might be a small little sandwich guy but it boasts a beautiful outdoor patio in the summertime that just about doubles the space. Named Favourite Handheld on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list and most recently awarded Best Sandwich 2025 in EDify Magazine, you'll also find them on the Worldwide Faves section of this very website. The interior is somewhat small but very bright and fresh. Casual light wood high-tops, counter seating, a few bench seats near the back, and the aforementioned patio. You'll also note pops of their signature yellow, especially on their unmistakable brick facade outside. The restaurant feels breezy and gives off a comfortable vibe that makes you want to "stop in to grab a quick sandwich." And maybe people-watch out the window for a few minutes. The staff is also super friendly which makes you feel like you're hanging out with your pals. (Ha! See what I did there?) Situated at a table on a Saturday evening, I was looking for the maximum Pals experience! Pals is all about the drinks and offers an impressive array of cocktails and beer, especially for such a small shop. The Winter Sangria sounded like a seasonally appropriate delight while their Caesar made with pepperoncini brine is an ideal compliment to their use of pepperoncini elsewhere on the menu. On this visit I opted for the Strathcona Sling (Gin, cherry liqueurs, orange & pineapple juice, bitters - $15.00) which not only sounded delicious but also might be the signature beverage of the entire neighbourhood. This drink sounds like it might be pretty sweet but I didn't find that about it. It's very refreshing and the grown-up flavours from the gin and bitters hold their own. What sounds like a kid's shirley temple actually tastes quite adult. This would absolutely be the quintessential patio beverage on a hot summer day during the Fringe - a cocktail that lives up to it's name. The Pals food menu is an extravaganza of sandwiches! There are fourteen different sandwiches in two categories; made hot or served fresh. There's usually a feature sandwich as well. Be prepared for sandwiches like you've never seen them before! But the snacks, soups, and salads are incredible as well and the quality certainly doesn't stop with the sandwiches alone. In an effort to dig into this part of the menu a bit more I thought it prudent to order the Soup & Salad Combo (Choice of soup & salad with house focaccia - $19.00). A great option if maybe you don't want a sandwich. Pals usually has two different soups and salads on the go so you're able to customize this dish with whatever combo you like. I chose the House Soup (dill pickle & spicy pepperoncini) and The Other House Salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, green onion, blue cheese, bacon, buttermilk ranch). Let's start with the soup. How unique!! You've never tasted a zingy little bowl of soup like this before! I don't know about you, but I love a dill pickle soup very much (maybe it's my Eastern European ancestry) but the addition of pepperoncini totally changes the game. This soup packs a punch but in the most interesting and delicious way. And then the salad! I ordered this one because it sounded like a wedge salad (one of my favourites) without the wedge. A deconstructed wedge salad, if you will. And boy did it deliver! The flavours of tomato and bacon together are so classic and the generous chunks of crumbled blue cheese were perfection. I loved how well-dressed everything was - not a dry leaf in the house. A salad may sound like a boring thing to order but certainly not in this case. Let's not forget the focaccia which cannot be treated as an afterthought because it was incredible. This bread was impossibly light while still possessing the unctuous and oily quality that you want from a focaccia. The crust was impossibly crispy and dusted in salt. What a dream! Honestly, I know that you need to order a sandwich... But maybe you don't? I'm going to have an existential crisis about this. But yes, I obviously ordered a sandwich. This might be an unpopular opinion but I highly favour the "served fresh" sandwiches at Pals by a lot. The BLT is the best in the entire city, I swear. The Burrata is completely insane - I've never seen a stack of prosciutto so high.

However, we did want to try the new Pals…read moreSandwiches that opened up just off of Whyte Ave. They also had the sweetest patio which happened to have a few free spots. We ordered a couple of beers (Mojito Sour) and the Italian Pilsner. My husband also ordered a cocktail (the Spicy Paloma). The cocktail was okay but overpriced. It kinda tasted like the ones that you order at a place like Boston Pizza. However, the beers were refreshing and hit the spot. Menu is basic with a variety of Sandwiches, fries, soups and salads. We decided to try two sandwiches and share them. I chose the feature of the day which was a cheddar beef sandwich with a side of tortilla soup. Hubby chose the Reuban with fries. Service was friendly and our water glasses were filled constantly. Sandwiches came out pretty fast. They were well constructed and tasty. They both had a decent amount of meat in them. Definately the Reuban was more flavourful than the cheese and beef. My soup was awesome. Hubby's fries were average. Is this the best place to get a sandwich? No. But if you want a quick bite with decent food with a lovely atmosphere, check it out.
