Came to SquareHead Brewing with a buddy of mine and left disappointed. For starters they were having an event in the patio area which we were not interested in attending but were dinged $5 to park, is what it is. Secondly, we walked in the taproom to grab some brews. The bartender saw us looking to order a beer and proceeded to carry on with his conversation for about 3-4 minutes without acknowledging us. They were also out of not one, but two IPAs which is what we wanted to try, simply should not happen. I got the session IPA with Apricot, wasn't a bad fallback option, my buddy got a cider and was not a fan at all, I had some as well, just not very good. Had my engagement party here and they were super accommodating! The space is cute and has many games such as giant checkers, Jenga and lawn games. Everyone loved tasting all of the different types of beers and they even made a cocktail named after us in honor of our party. I had a couple of reviews in the works that needed to be finished up, but for my 600th review I felt it only made sense that beer takes the head of the table. What kind of head? A square one, that is. And therein lies my horrible joke-y pun that leads us into this solid review for Holbrook's newest brewery, Square Head Brewing. Snuggled away down a road that almost makes you feel like you'll end up in a horror movie is this tiny brew spot. My buddy had driven by a couple of days before and said the place looked super small. He wasn't wrong, yet Square Head works well with what its got and makes a lot of space out of a little. A decent amount of tables/counters/seating on what was probably a lot of reclaimed wood along with a bar area that looked like something out of a voodoo shack in New Orleans. I was diggin' it! When we first strolled in past the food truck parked outside (another positive!), I noticed a table of bottles to the right of the bar. A tasting/pre-release of a bottle? Sounds good to me! The Einars Elderberry aged in whisky barrels was the sample and boy did it hit the palate right. I loved the semi fruity and oaky flavors that burst through. I can't compare it to its non-barrel-aged counterpart as this version was significantly better. Beyond this initial jolt of deliciousness, things continued in a relatively positive direction. Certain beers were a little oddly enjoyable like The Only Explanation, a brown ale brewed with hemp seeds that gave it a little earthy, nutty aftertaste, and The Occasional Pause, an amber ale with cinnamon, habanero (you heard that right) and aged in whisky barrels which gave the brew an interestingly subtle beginning with plenty of unexpected heat by the end of the sip. A few others were pretty decent too like Flu Shot, their winter ale, and You Were Never Here, the milkshake NEIPA. I didn't love Suite Solitude, the cream ale, as it almost tasted flat. The other (understandable) downer was the multiple crossed out beers on the menu. It was unfortunate these had kicked because some of them sounded outstanding, but therein lies the tricky line Square Head walks as a small batch brewery. Nevertheless, having enough other intriguing stuff does help with this dilemma. What also helps are those aforementioned bottles. There were several types in Square Head's mini fridge and better yet, they was running a super awesome deal: most of the smaller oz. bottles were 2 for $15 and if you spent that much on a bottle purchase you would receive any style pint glass for $5. I snagged that Einars Elderberry and a bottle of a barrel-aged version of one of those crossed out concoctions (The Other Same Time) along with a beautiful goblet glass all for $20. That price was just unbeatable. Overall, Square Head hits on almost all cylinders. Yeah the place isn't big, but it's got plenty of character and a nice list of brews, albeit some might not be there when you arrive. Hey, the menus were printed with the dates of this past weekend (February 1st - 3rd) so consider that a great reason to return because who knows what awesome brews you'll run into on a second trip. So until then, I'll just cheers myself for 600 reviews with some Square Head-purchased brews. read more

I love visiting breweries and was really looking forward to this place opening. I finally got the chance to visit a couple weekends ago but was incredibly disappointed in the beer that we got. To start, the decor and feel of this place is exactly what you want from a brewery! It's intimate, nice amount of seating, warm lighting, and was quiet enough to hang out and talk. There was almost a full board of beers featuring their own beers and some guest taps. We got a Belgian dubbel and a milkshake IPA. Both beers were sadly undrinkable. The dubbel tasted so light I doubted there was any ABV; it was like I was drinking a watered down iced coffee...and the milkshake IPA tasted flat and sad. Maybe something was off with their taps that day but I won't be rushing back. They just opened up so I'll give them some time to work out the kinks and re-review. read more

Super cool brewery. Showed up on a Sunday afternoon. The football game was on the vibe was great. Love how they decorated this place. They had a guest bakery in supplying yummy treats to enjoy free of charge. Bonus! The beers were great. Well balanced menu of different varieties from NEIPA, sours, brown ales and stouts to name a few. I really enjoyed the winter ale known as the the flu shot! Not the greatest location (a parking lot of an industrial park) but the tasting room is a cool re-purposed looking space run by some non-standard issue brewers- no giant dudes with long beards, making a cool assortment of beers. This is a very small but a really cool brewery! It's dark lit and very hip. The owner David and his son Brad are amazing and very personable. They took the time to explain their beers to us. I had never heard of this place until I was around the block at 1940s and looked at what was near me. This location is super nice and a total hidden gem in the area. I was totally in love with how it is decorated inside, it's nice and peaceful and romantic. It's literally a perfect place to grab a beer and talk to someone. I had the winter out which was very good, it reminded me a lot of the leinenkugel vanilla porter. The space itself was charming and had an industrial chic thing happening which my fiancée and I both liked. Unfortunately, the beer flight we got was a miss top to bottom. Each pour was pretty warm and tasted a bit watered down. The staff was friendly and it seemed like a lovely group of regulars were about but there was just something off about our beer selection. They are a newer brewery so potentially, there may have been something off with their taps that they've been workshopping but a disappointing first impression. We have tried this brewery 4 times and unfortunately don't see ourselves coming back. The inside itself has a nice vibe and love that it can be open air. However the most important part -THE BEER- is lacking. The selection is mediocre (in my eyes) but what I can't wrap my head around is the beer being served almost room temperature and tasting almost watered down. Went there on a recent Saturday afternoon. Kinda dark and brewery-like inside. Literally 4 customers at the bar, speaking with the man behind the bar. We found it very difficult to decipher what beers were there and available; the board is very high up and only upon scrutinizing it again we realized many of the beers had a big line across them, therefore implying those were no longer available. We chose the IPA-- after waiting almost 10 minutes for the bartender to disengage himself from the other customers. Not a greeting or acknowledgement for that entire time (10 minutes waiting feels extraordinarily long). Even when he approached, he wasn't warm or welcoming. Just poured the two small beers and walked away. I want SOOOOOOOOOO badly to write nice things about the beer. I want local people to have great success so I hate to say that we won't go back for a very long time. The beer was not even recognizable as beer. It had a sour taste, barely any effervescence, was pale and weak. I have never left a beer unfinished so we can call this experience a first. Like one of the other reviews, perhaps the place needs some tweaking and hopefully in time they will improve their customer service and more importantly, their beer. I have to confess that I think my review would be more fair had we tried the other couple of beers that were available, but I think we would have just felt foolish spending more money after having our first beer that incredibly awful... read more

i have been here three times now , i wanted to make a few visits before an accurate review . let me say simply , i see the potential but they need to do many things better . my first visit was the best one , that was within a month of the opening . since then its been downhill sadly . first visit the girl behind the bar was friendly and knowledgeable about the beer on tap . free samples were even offered , but since then , it seems the ppl running the bar, which seems to be the father and son owners , dont do much to interact with customers . on two occasions it seemed they were more concerned with drinking and serving their friends then making customers feel welcomed . that alone is reason to be turned off . the customer service needs big improvement . the beer itself is decent but its hard to taste beer when its not really cold . each time ive been in , all the beers pour with heavy foam and they use plain cheap looking plastic cups which seemed very uninviting. half the tap board is crossed out and unavailable each visit , just not a great place to sit and enjoy a few beers for me with other local choices that do it better . i will check them out again in the summer and see if things got better but if your looking for good local beer id pick 1940s , bluepoint or even the patchogue beer project (which is new but very good already) before this place as it stands currently read more
