Every time I go here I seem to get the 30something guy (instead of his dad), but I always walk away pleased. He knows how to cut, and does so in a careful, methodical way that's reassuring. The result always matches my directions, and he has a pretty friendly demeanor, following your lead and pretty much talking as much as you'd like. There's maybe a tad too much hair-pulling action; so you don't get that yummy-fuzzy feeling you get with some barbers, but it's a great deal for $12. Also, the post-haircut cranial vacuum service is a nice bonus. Update: now that I've tried both, I'd say I prefer the son to the father. He seems to cut a little more efficiently and elegantly. read more

I've been going to Gary's (and Gary Jr's) for 13 years, and now my boys for 10 years. The price hasn't changed in all that time, the service is fine and the haircut works. Gary Sr. is traveling lots now, so he's not in that much, so it's becoming Jr's shop. Saturday's always the busiest times, so I've really appreciated the Sunday's with Jr. So he sometimes closes early -- my advice, come w/in 1/2 hour of when the shop first opens -- you're bound to get him then. read more

This barbershop has many uneven reviews, but most of those people are just haters. Some of the points made by negative reviewers are accurate. You can't make an appointment. You often will have to wait as long as 45 mins-1 hour if you come at a busy time. Sometimes they are closed without warning during posted open hours. However, Gary is the man and always does a fantastic job as quickly, efficiently, and inexpensively as possible. I never try to come here unless I know that I'm not in a hurry and won't be stressed out by waiting. Waiting for a haircut here is often the best part! There are very few barbershops left like this where the barber can keep a conversation going amongst all of the patrons simultaneously. The art of conversation is lost among so many people my generation and younger, but this is a place where conversation is easy! I'm preparing to move this summer and I am not happy about finding a new barber. I can't recommend this place highly enough. While it is true that it can be frustrating to find time in your schedule to make it in while they are open, all of the regulars know that this is just the price you pay to have the privilege of getting your haircut here. Gary could only open for 3 hours a day 3 days per week and all of the regulars would still make it happen. Because where else would we go? read more

Just went in for a beard trim and had a horrendous experience. I took an hour off work, got there when they opened at 10 to save time, but still waited 25 minutes to get in the chair. That would have been fine, except... Once my turn, the old guy (I am assuming the owner), asked me what I wanted to do. I said I hadn't had the beard trimmed in a few weeks and wanted it cleaned up. I have a pretty substantial beard. He responds, "oh, so you want to take a lot off," and shows me by indicating the width of the comb teeth, over an inch. I responded, "no, I just want it trimmed to make it look neat" He then repeats, "so we're taking a lot off." I start to get worried and tell him again what I want. He then responds "I'll give you 10 minutes, and if you don't like it, too bad. I ain't spendin' no 30 minutes for $4." My response was basically, WTF?! Are you joking? At that point, I left. And I'll write here what I told him as I left: If you don't want to do beard trims, better not to do them at all; don't advertise it. Or, charge $10, whatever you feel is worth your time. BTW, I was going to tip you $5 if you did a good job, knowing that a beard trim is a small job. If you had just done what you were supposed to, you would have made $10 in 10 minutes. Hell, I would have happily given you $10 plus tip for a good job, I don't want my beard mangled. You charge $12 for a haircut, and the guy in front of me occupied almost a half an hour of your time. Do the math! Stay away from this place, unless you crave the abuse. read more

Asked for a low fade, ended up with a crooked high-and-tight on one side and cheetah spots on the other. Told him not to cut the top, he did it anyway. Butchered my hair, had to go to another barbershop to get it fixed. Neat ambiance in the shop, nice people, but I focus on the product, and this was abysmal. read more

Came in today based off of what I read in reviews. It was a 1 hour 15 minute wait at 10 am on a Thursday. Asked for a comb over and I was met with condescending remarks about how kids get that haircut. THe barber sarcastically suggested maybe I rethink my hairstyle but didnt have any real suggestions to offer up. Okay whatever, you're rude but at least if you can cut hair good I'll let that go. I Ended up with a haircut that was fit for an 11 year old. I must be mistaken, but I've gotten this haircut countless time by other barbers and they always cleaned me up and by the time I was out of their chair i looked like a grown up. I'm not sure if this guy half assed my haircut on purpose, or if he really doesn't know how to cut a clean comb over for an adult male. I wasn't lined up, and the sideburns are sloppy. Needless to say, that was 18 dollars down the drain. Also, if you don't like an over chatty, slightly rude, borderline racist barber don't come here. Was a bit weirded out by the racial comments this guy was making. Not outright bigotry but some questionable things were definitely said. #AWKWARD read more

Senior did my haircut. It was uneven had some hair trimmed and patches of long hair left untouched. The line on my neck was done crooked and he shaved way to much off, leaving my the back of my head looking like ****. He was a very nice guy even though i barely understood what he said . read more

This is a really amazing barber shop. I come here as often as i can because i get the best cut. Gary(owner) and his father know what they are doing plus they are super friendly and social. The shop itself is clean and well maintained. On weekends the wait is long and its CASH ONLY but totally worth it. I would recommend this shop to anyone. GREAT HAIRCUT AT A GREAT PRICE!!! read more

On top of a great cut, they kept open an extra 15 minutes on a Saturday for me today. I normal pay more than $50 for a cut, but decided to try a more traditional (and cheaper) barber. I am completely satisfied with the cut, which actually looks better than the expensive ones I normally get. I'm definitely coming here from now on. read more

Went twice, first time I was very happy with my haircut. Gary's amicable and does a good job. Second time, I went half an hour before closing, but the door was locked. Gary was inside cutting someone's hair already and couldn't even do me the courtesy of acknowledging my existence. Just kind of looked at me and went back to cutting hair. read more

Well, my first experience with the place was at a weekend. It was 2:30pm and the place closed at 3pm. There might have been one person waiting when I showed up. I thought the younger guy (the son) was pretty rude in telling me "We're closed". Not "sorry, I have someone waiting and I won't be able to fit you in before closing"...Just "We're closed". Considering I had been trying to go there for a couple weeks, I was pretty pissed. But, I eventually went during the week and the Older guy (the Dad) was really nice & friendly. I have been going to different mediocre barbers for almost 25 years until I ran into Gary. While I was waiting for my turn, I can't help but listen to some of the conversation that he had with some of the customers and it became very apparent to me that he knew what he was doing. He analyzed the shape of a persons head then gave his recommended style. Out of curiosity, I didn't tell him how I wanted my hair cut instead, I gave him freedom to cut it however he wants. 15 minutes later, I have THE BEST haircut of my life ever. Hours are weird as it's a one man operation. The closing time is when he is done. So, he doesn't accept more customers once he has enough to keep him busy until closing. If you can work with these details, he does a great job for a competitive price. read more

You pretty much get the same haircut from the dad no matter what you ask for ("regular haircut"). The son who is there on most Sat, Sun, and Mondays gives a really great haircut and you should try to go then. It's been $10 or $12 for the last 10 years I've been going. Really good place to get your hair cut. The barber is really friendly and has a ton of usual customers. Be prepared to wait at least 30 mins because he is usually flooded with customers but it is definitely worth the wait. Only $15 is a great deal for the quality of cut that you will get here. I didn't catch the gentleman's name, but he was very accommodating. It's cash only, so don't forget to hit the ATM on the way. My husband and I were in a bind, days before our wedding and wanting a good cut with attention to detail for him. I usually cut his hair, but I can spend 2 hours and we just did not have the time. Junior? cut his hair in no time but clearly gave thought and attention to detail. While they are not a salon, my husband's hair came out looking well styled. And at $12 a cut, I may not bother spending hours cutting it myself. Although Jr was kind enough to give me some pointers. We got there right at opening so we didn't wait at all. Alright, after quite a few visits here I've got to give it to him, he cuts hair well and gets it done quick. I would recommend him to any guy that needs a good cut that isn't going to break the bank. Men's haircuts are $15 which is a good price for the area! You can get less expensive haircuts but they may not speak your language, know the instructions you are giving them, or care to get everything the right length. read more

The best barber shop I've been to in the Mountain View area. Both guys are very good at cutting hair. They listen to directions, they're careful and they're friendly. The wait is usually short to moderate -- at busy times, there might be three or four people in line, but I've often had no wait at all. The price is incredibly low, considering the quality of the service. Many other inexpensive haircut places just try to get you out the door as fast as possible, don't listen to what you want, and give sloppy haircuts. This place is the exception. Went in for a buzz cut and beard trim. I don't think I'll be going anywhere else! While I waited, the barber kept up a nice conversation with the guy in the chair and those waiting. He knows regulars by name. The shop is also full of plants and collectables which gives a nice atmosphere. Haircut was very thorough, and the barber made good suggestions to improve what I asked for. He cleaned up the parts of my beard that are difficult to reach when shaving too. Only caveat is the wait time. Service is generally walk-in, and when there is only one barber you can end up with a half hour wait time. read more
