A friend who is local in Auckland introduced us to this restaurant. When we first arrive the space was only half filled however, within the next 20 minutes it had filled up the maximum capacity. The decor was simple but don't let that fool you. The food was amazing! So much so that I wanted to go back the next day for lunch or dinner. We ordered the following: - beef satay - nasi goreng - tofu and vegetable stir fry - tamarind fish Loved everything we had, but my favorite was probably the nasi goreng. Had the mee goreng here and really found it quite satisfying. It came out hot and smokey with some great wok hei. I asked for it to be spicy and it was a pretty decent amount of heat. I'd say start with that if you like hot food and if you want more, you can ask for some chili on the side. Good texture on the noodles too. read more

We were in a mood for spicy food and Malaysian food seemed like a perfect choice. Upon arrival, we were greeted graciously and got seated immediately. We knew exactly what we wanted - roti with curry chicken for appetizers and beef rendang for entrée, and ended up ordering the same. Within a few minutes, both the dishes were served. With the right amount of spice, both these dish hit the spot. This restaurant also seems like a popular choice for take-out meals. Avoid disappointment by booking ahead to secure a table (especially for groups). I guess people keep coming back for the decent sized, tasty meals. Wow, Sri Pinang is a K'Road Institution and has been going for eons. This could well have been my first experience of Malaysian food - I think I first went there in about 1994 and it's always been great. Angie, the owner, has always been there and is always smiling and welcoming. As somebody in another review aptly put, the decor is "like an old person's house" but that just adds to the warm, homely ambience. I always go for the Kuay Teow and often the Roti Curry. But all the food is really tasty, cheap and always good. Go in a big group or small, either way you will have a fab meal. It goes without saying that this place is absolutely kid-friendly, although walking around late at night in K'Road might be an eye-opener for them, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

If you haven't been to Sri Penang you MUST. It's the best Thai in my opinion round Auckland. Great value for the enormous portion you get. You're guaranteed a doggy bag situation. The good old Chicken curry is lovely. I was a bit rushed on my one visit here so I am definitely going back and bonus its BYO wine. Two friends and I called ahead on a Saturday night and they said they could get us a table - when we got there (around 7:30pm?), there were a few open tables so no wait at all. There's not that much by way of ambiance (white walls, some simple floral decorations around), but it's dark enough that I wasn't even paying attention to the decor. With the help of our waiter, we ordered a lamb dish, a beef dish, and a noodle dish (sorry, can't remember any names!). My favorite was the beef dish, and I really liked the noodles but at medium spice, it was a bit too spicy for me. We also had warm roti with curry. Next time I'd skip the curry and just have the roti, though my friends with me liked the curry. The food was soooo good! We had plenty of leftovers, and I am still thinking about those tasty dishes a few days later. Oh also, we brought a bottle of wine and it's only a $1 per person corkage fee! I went to Sri Pinang with a large group of friends. It ticked the boxes - BYO, a table for many, a menu to please an assorted crowd's palate and back pocket. You'll need to book ahead if dining with a crowd. There's usually an eclectic mix of patrons - students, couples on dates, professionals dressed neat as a pin and K' Road locals. The decor is really basic and almost looks neglected - but the restaurant is cosy and welcoming and a peek into the kitchen revealed a spotlessly clean space. The staff are attentive without being bothersome. Portion sizes are generous and it doesn't really matter what you order - everything on the extensive menu is delicious and tasty. read more

We headed to Sri Pinang for my sister's birthday. I had never had Malaysian food before and was really excited to see how it would pan out. As I walked up, Sri Pinang had already won, on account of the fact that the restaurant is a stone's throw from my work and right amongst the wonderful madness of my favourite street, K'Road. While we were in a massive group and I can't remember what everybody ordered, I remember what I got because it was all awesome. To start I snaffled up some spicy vege curry puffs, and followed this up with garlic prawns. Food tastes good and BYO which is convenient. Reservations are the best if you are coming on a group. Take aways are available and staff seems quite nice to deal with. Good can be quite spicy so mind making your options clear to whoever takes the order. A bit of letdown with the delivery of the food. Entree took nearly 35 mins to be delivered. 15 mins after that a hot plate arrived (no food, just only the hot plate). 25 mins after that (after the hot plate went cold) food arrived. I've been visiting Sri Pinang for my usual order since 1999, which is made up of a plate of Prawn Crackers, 1 Chicken Laksa and 1 Roti Bread and not once have I ever had a bad meal!! Ang is the Head Honcho at Sri Pinang and she is the most delightful woman, a walking, talking CRM package she always remembers your name and if you're a regular she always remembers your favourite orders. This kind of service is unique and always makes you feel like a person and not a number! Over the years I've tried most of the dishes on their menu and every dish is faultless, everything from the Laksa, Nasi Goreng, Beef & Black Bean, BBQ Pork with Rice, Mee Goreng, it's all fabulous! The prices are very reasonable and Sri Pinang is ideal for a casual dinner, or for a small gathering. The beef rendang, chicken satay and chicken laksa are all recommended. Plus this place is byo so it's cheap and cheerful. One of my fav restaurants. Ang and her team give superb service, always accomodating and the food is excellent too. Not only that, upon being seated, you're given unlimited hot tea during the meal. Though its Malasian, a well travelled friend described the roti's as 'true Marocain style'. The most meals are around $10 and the one I'd suggest is a Roti curry. Chicken curry with a thick roti for $8. Can't go wrong. Only downside I think is that its not that flash but the great food and service more than make up for that and so despite the downside, I still give Sri Pinang a 5 from 5. read more

My partner and I fell in love with the food on a recent visit to Penang, Malaysia so when I read about this restaurant in an online magazine recently, I couldn't wait to try it. It's very much blink and you'll miss it from the outside, with its white sign and somewhat boring brown exterior. Inside, the decor isn't much more appealing either. It looks, as my boyfriend so eloquently put it, "like an old persons house" in there. But I'm not here to criticise the decor, I'm here to rave about the food. We ordered the roti curry to start, which was amazing. The roti flatbread was exactly like those I lived on in Penang and the curry sauce was just the right amount of spicy, with bits of chicken and potato in. For my main course, I was presented with THE biggest bowl of laksa I've ever seen. Honestly, there was enough for three people in there and it was delicious. My only grievance is that there were no veggies, just chicken and noodles, which got a bit tiresome in such a huge bowl, it would have been nice to have some variety. At $16 for a main and $8 for the starter, it's pretty cheap for CBD standards but rather on the expensive side for K-Road, but considering the portion size and gorgeous flavour, it was totally worth it. read more

So I was in Auckland, where there understandably seems to be a lot of southeast Asian food. New Zealand is pretty much southeast southeast Asia, right? Hadn't tried Malaysian food so I thought I'd check it out. I asked the woman there what to get as a noob and she said I should go for the mee goreng, a classic noodle dish. I then asked for it as spicy as they could make it, which is the request that always filters out the wheat from the chaff. The chaff are people who racially profile, based on my appearance that people tend to categorize as a "white person." I respectfully disagree, and 23andMe has my back, confirming that I am indeed 3% Middle Eastern and 0.2% Japanese. So when I got off my camel, put away my samurai sword, and walked in the door in my boat shoes, khakis, and Oxford shirt, I was not looking to encounter any bogus racial stereotypes, because I defy those! Restaurants tend to apply this when they feel like the gringo can't *really* handle the top level spicy. #notallgringos. I have been known to shovel down the spiciest of foods until I end up in the hospital with a permanently damaged stomach lining. And they delivered! When I took the first bite, the mouth-scorching heat I so craved incinerated my taste buds. The other flavors worked together - the spices, Thai chiles, vegetables, various proteins from the land and sea. It was a harmonious medley of deliciousness. In summary, this place has excellent food, not that I know Malaysian food but I do know other Asian cuisines well, and great service. Very generous portions so I often end up taking half home in a plastic container for lunch the next day. The people are friendly and they always seem to find space for me and my partner.
