It's Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?…read more My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/AIDS in minority communities and the church's response to people dealing with the disease. Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review.... There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds...can you imagine that? African-Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections. Young adults between the ages of 13-25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now, but get tested...OK? So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don't know why that is. Maybe they're happy to be doing something for others. Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said "People will come to church for the food and for the love." The people at St. Luke's certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn't so bad either.

Just a reminder that God is only a prayer away…read more I used to come to this church Monday thru Friday to their 5:00 pm service and I would walk from home to church on Saturdays to make it to their 8:00 am service Unfortunately, I don't live in the area anymore so I can't come as often as I used to. I wish they would have their daily mass at 5:30 pm so that I can make it right after work "wishful thinking" however every time I get a chance to take the day off or to leave early from work I manage to go to their 5:00 pm mass service Every Wednesday right after 5:00 pm mass they have a Sacred Heart Novena They have a catholic elementary school and bible study They also provide healing mass service the 4th Monday of every month @7:30 pm I just found out that Father Mike passed away January 1st, 2019. He was an awesome bilingual English/Spanish Irish Priest at this church. I began attending this church in October 2023. Everything seemed "ok" no hidden agendas until early…read more2024, leading up to election cycle. Pastor Matt was so bold to take the church on a harmful, meandering road where he intermixed politics and religion, like how a lot of evangelical churches are becoming. It started when he invited Kirk Cameron in April 2024. That was a big mistake, for people who have never stepped foot in a Christian church. Kirk Cameron gave a sermon about Guthrem and the Vikings, which was so difficult to sit through considering it was a dense history lesson about the Vikings and faith, that just got lost in the sauce. Kirk Cameron is a right wing evangelical that has a bias towards promoting extreme right wing propaganda. Fast forward to September 2024, Matt started a series, "Bible and the Ballot," and as educated and open-minded that I consider myself and my husband to be, we just couldn't sit through the series. Matt was quick to demonize anyone who didn't support Trump and used the bible to justify his one-sided political stances (VERY HARMFUL). I was deeply bothered but chose to ignore it, as my children loved going to their kids Sunday school class. The straw that broke the camel's back was in June 6, 2025, the weekend that the ICE raids took place in Paramount which caused a domino effect in creating protests by surrounding communities in fighting against all the inhumane actions by ICE and the CBP. The next day at church, I was hoping for Matt to give space for people in the congregation to feel seen, loved and accepted, but instead he completely missed a perfect opportunity to offer a special prayer for all those effected by the ICE raids. Again, I was disappointed and hurt by how he selects when to speak up for causes that align with his political views. The deepest insult was when Matt equated illegal immigration to getting a DUI. He mentioned that if he broke the law in getting a DUI, he needs to pay the price, the same way that people who immigrate illegally are held to the law. Are you kidding me?!!!!!!! My husband and I decided to leave the church altogether because as a person of color, and a daughter of an immigrant, I feel that attending a church that doesn't align with my core Christian values about loving foreigners, and those who are disenfranchised is unacceptable. I don't care what political party the person next to me in church aligns with, or the Pastor identifies with, but I will ALWAYS draw the line and when cultural, racial and social injustices are overlooked. Matt does nothing to bridge the hurt, pain and division. As a pastor, leading a church should be focused on preaching about how one can grow in their faith, and be encouraged to show love & kindness towards ALL regardless of country of origin. Keep politics and division out of church at all costs!

My fiancé and I want to get married in the Catholic Church. We were encouraged when we learned that this parish has a confirmation schedule that would allow my fiancé to fulfill his missing sacrament requirements so we could move forward with a Catholic marriage. However, when I called the church to get more information, the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and discouraged. The woman who answered the phone, named Ana, immediately began asking personal questions--where I live, where my fiancé and I are from, whether I attend this church, and if I even belong to the parish. It felt less like a welcoming conversation and more like being questioned. What stood out most was that once I mentioned that a family member attends this church, she suddenly became more willing to share information. This made the interaction feel unwelcoming and conditional, rather than open and pastoral. For a church that offers programs to help people complete their sacraments and grow in their faith, we expected a more supportive and compassionate approach. Instead, the experience made us feel judged rather than guided. I hope the parish can reflect on how initial inquiries are handled, especially for couples sincerely trying to do things the right way within the Church.
