I rarely leave negative reviews, but sadly this will be my first…read more This was my parish growing up, I even attended their elementary school. My uncle passed away last year, and it was at his funeral services that this experience occurred. My 17 year old son went up for Communion. He has been baptized, made his First Communion, and attended Catholic school. But, since it had been a while since he had been to church. I am not sure if he was just nervous, but he didn't have his hands out. The priest, in a loud and scolding voice, asked if he had made his First Communion. When my son quietly said "Yes," and the priest turned him away. If a young person comes up to the altar looking unsure, wouldn't it be more appropriate to kindly invite them to cross their arms and receive a blessing? To guide them in a welcoming tone? What if it was someone with another faith, that didn't know what to do at a Catholic funeral? Was that really an appropriate response at the alter? About a month later, I saw the same priest at another family service. Afterward, I approached him to share what happened and suggest a gentler approach. His response? He said he did that because sometimes people receive the host and later throw it on the floor. What? I was stunned at how arrogantly he spoke. I even told him, "Normally, one might respond with, 'I'm sorry for that experience,' or 'I didn't intend my words to come across that way, I'll reflect on how I could have handled it differently.'" Instead, he brushed me off with, "Oh, okay. I have another appointment," and walked away. This was deeply disappointing. If a young person looks unsure at the altar, shouldn't the response be gentle guidance, not public humiliation? In a time when churches are struggling to keep young people engaged, or someone who is possibly exploring their faith again, I expected compassion. What would Jesus do? What would Jesus say?

My fiancé and I want to get married in the Catholic Church. We were encouraged when we learned that this parish has a confirmation schedule that would allow my fiancé to fulfill his missing sacrament requirements so we could move forward with a Catholic marriage. However, when I called the church to get more information, the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and discouraged. The woman who answered the phone, named Ana, immediately began asking personal questions--where I live, where my fiancé and I are from, whether I attend this church, and if I even belong to the parish. It felt less like a welcoming conversation and more like being questioned. What stood out most was that once I mentioned that a family member attends this church, she suddenly became more willing to share information. This made the interaction feel unwelcoming and conditional, rather than open and pastoral. For a church that offers programs to help people complete their sacraments and grow in their faith, we expected a more supportive and compassionate approach. Instead, the experience made us feel judged rather than guided. I hope the parish can reflect on how initial inquiries are handled, especially for couples sincerely trying to do things the right way within the Church.

It's Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?…read more My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/AIDS in minority communities and the church's response to people dealing with the disease. Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review.... There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds...can you imagine that? African-Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections. Young adults between the ages of 13-25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now, but get tested...OK? So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don't know why that is. Maybe they're happy to be doing something for others. Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said "People will come to church for the food and for the love." The people at St. Luke's certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn't so bad either.

While one of the pastors there did say they appreciated my ministry during a zoom bible study there was no reliable show of such support and I actually never learned why. That pastor did have our mental health outreach flyer translated to Spanish but yet never shared the outreach or the flyer with the congregation and or offer to support by attending, assisting with volunteers, etc. I am grateful for the translation. The congregation here is largely Hispanic and most of the pastors are young. I'm however African American and over 60; not sure if that matters but this was my experience. The reason i took a break from church is because I was looking for one that felt like 'home'. I attended a Baptist church in Lakewood for a couple of years... but I never felt like I was welcomed....the church had cliques and the people felt 'fake'.... I did not feel love there. You had to be a certain type of person...a certain look. Buuuut as soon as I walked thru the doors of Christ Chapel I was welcomed with a hug and smiles. It's a small church with a huge heart. EVERYONE is welcomed here. You see all sorts of people...young, old, gay, straight, singles, couples, rich, poor, well dressed and casually dressed.... It does not matter who or what you are. The love and word of God is here. There's lots of singing here...don't worry if you can't carry a note/tune because the music/singing is loud so don't be shy... Sing along! The sermons don't feel 'preach - y'...if you know what I mean. It feels more like 'sharing'...communicating. Not sure how to describe it, but I guess it's like friends talking about Jesus /God /the word. My husband was raised in a very catholic family, he's only attended catholic services...but he's joined me a few times here and he's really enjoyed it. Which says a lot about this place. You leave here feeling light, loved, stronger and safe. I encourage anyone that feels the need to get closer /understand the Lord to come visit. Or anyone out there that feels lost, or feels like they need someone /something to stop by...there is NO pressure or judgment here. Can't wait to meet you.
