We came here for a wedding so while I can't speak on the mass experience, I can speak on the atmosphere & overall feeling of the church which, I will say up front, is quite positive. The church from the outside isn't very eye catching. However, inside, the high vaulted ceiling and large stained glass windows are very striking. It's quite a beautiful church on the inside. It's also very wide so it feels quite roomy. I could see that it might feel cramped on busy mass days, but for the small wedding ceremony, I felt dwarfed inside of the large interior. I will say that I didn't like that if you needed to use the restroom you had to go outside. I wish they had inside restrooms as well so that if you had to leave during mass you could still potentially hear what was being said. In all, the church was very nice. I would love to come back and experience it during its normal operations. read more

The peace and joy I have found in God's Holy Catholic Church surpasses anything this World has to offer. As a former parishioner I wanted to let you know about my adoration experience on May 2. I found myself with a half hour of free time at 5 pm that afternoon and instead of walking around the park or running errands I decided to spend the time with the Lord. Knowing St. Bonaventure had perpetual adoration I figured it would be the perfect place. Unfortunately, as I walked in to the separate adoration chapel, there were three women there talking about the gift shop at the Christ Cathedral. Figuring the conversation would end soon, I kneeled down to pray. The women then proceeded to recite the rosary out loud. Knowing I would not get silent time with the Lord, I left disappointed in less than 5 minutes. When I was a parishioner, we were told this small chapel was meant to be a silent place free of distractions. If it's not meant to be that, then why not move Jesus out of the garage and bring Him back to His place of honor in the main sanctuary? read more

Why am I giving St. Bonaventure Catholic Church 5 stars? Cuz, for the past 18 years, this is the only church I really enjoy going to. And probably because I grew up with some of the best people here through the Huntington Beach Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Group. :) I wouldn't say this is the most beautiful and biggest Catholic church I've been to in SoCal...but it does feel more like home when you enter it than most other nearby churches (ie. Blessed Sacrament in Westminster and St. Barbara in Santa Ana...can you say ghetto-fab?) The school here is apparently a pretty good private school from what I hear. And most of the priests that I've met here are all pretty awesome and their sermons aren't super boring and easily tuned out during mass. If I was forced to have a church wedding when and if I'm ready in the future, I'd want it here...since I've grown to love the place so much. read more

"ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST" The long awaited completion of needed 'modifications' of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (costing us millions of dollars) has left us with a modern Lutheran edifice; a place to gather and pray that is sadly, Catholic in name only. Gone is the image of the crucified Jesus from behind what was once the alter - gone is the Tabernacle - which has now been relegated to the adjacent chapel. Gone is the true Eucharist that has been replaced with a symbol of communion with God - and no longer the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ Himself. (Transubstantiation). St. Bonaventure Church is now Saint Bonaventure church (small c ) and, has forsaken Jesus Himself with a modernist NOVUS ORDO MISSAL which is simply the new secular version of the Protestant mass. This new, modernist church embraces 'shepherds' (thanks to Vatican II) that are leading their sheep over the secular cliff like so many lemmings. The Holy Eucharist is no longer honored there (in its true form) and as a Eucharistic Minister to the sick of the parish, neither am I. As a Catholic, I go to church to be with my God - not to socialize with parishioners. I have lost my church and so have all other Catholics, which sadly, don't realize it. "If anyone denies that in the sacrament of the most holy Eucharist there are truly, really, and substantially contained the body and blood together with the soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore the whole Christ, but shall say that He is in it as by a sign or figure, or force, let him be anathema." (Council of Trent, Session 13, Canon 1; Denz. 883.) read more

Usually pretty good even with the mass being outdoors now. I'd give it a 5-star except for the following problem: I get a little disturbed by some ladies who bring their purses to the Mass and then every now and then you get one of them who suddenly acts like they're worried it might get stolen if they leave it under the chair when they go up for the Eucharist . if you're coming to Mass with your purse and you're worried about it being stolen, just leave your purse in the car . & if you're worried about your car getting broken into during the mass when the parking lot is right there in view at the church , then you have other problems to worry about. maybe you need to see a doctor about paranoia but anyways ...its very disturbing when you're at mass and suddenly a lady looks at you and thinks to herself " I better bring my purse with me. You never know about that person next to me". I'm at mass for spiritual reasons NOT to steal a purse or anything else. and I'm NOT poor. I'm probably more wealthy than you. I come from a very wealthy family . if I told you the product my grandfather invented you would be very familiar with it. Ladies, it's NOT fair to use your purse as a weapon to marginalize people . you don't need it at daily mass .. No offering is taken... unless you need a feminine product...but if that's the case then may be you should take the day off from Mass... really there's No reason to bring your purse at all. You can leave it in the car or leave it at home. MAYBE the priest should preach a homily about this topic as well. And if I feel a little self-conscious because a lady has done this to me I can only imagine how a real poor person might feel if they came to Mass when our goal is to be evangelists even as Catholics and make people feel welcome, NOT to act snooty. This is NOT a country club. you will be judged by God for your hospitality , or lack of , especially when you're on the church premises. read more

This church mixes politics into its Vietnamese mass. They chose to read out loud a person's prayer before today's mass asking for President Trump to be re-elected. The Vietnamese priest also never wears a mask. Further, he comes close to his parishioners to greet them and hands out communion without a mask. People don't come to church to be inundated by personal politics, or get infected with a possibly fatal virus. read more

So went to the side where donations are held and the lady who's run the department was quite rude telling me to get off the property and complain of my dog leashes. I went to the side of the building so I could let my dog run Around freely minding the church rules keeping out of main churches entrance as well as Inside. I thought church people are supose 2 be kind. What up with the help you guys provide is in learning English language and food stamps. What happened to really getting out there are serving the homeless, the motel living family, the jails. The elderly and children the ones most care less about even notice. read more

A few years ago I gave this Catholic Church a poor revue. It was depressing .... doom and gloom feel. I am pleased and happy to say that through the blessings of new Priests and music ministers the masses here are wonderful. I enjoy attending and look forward now to hearing the homily and partaking of the wonderful music. We live in a world where it nice to spend Sunday mass among thoughtful people, hearing hope filled messages and receiving the blessings of the lord. We are all doing our best to make this a better world and spread the good news. It's nice to leave mass feeling a little better and to look forward to making a difference. The music stays with me all week long and truly these wonderful musicians sing the word of god with heart felt notes. read more

I like this church better than St. Vincent off of Talbert. The mass is so much more interesting and the sermon is not as boring as Rev. Lovejoy portrays it in the Simpson's TV show. There's enough parking even though we've been here late before. I forget the names but the 2 services I came here one priest was Vietnamese (funny and insightful sermon) and the other was East Indian (funnier and as insightful). I truly enjoyed the services here. What's the dealy with the new "If you're non-practicing or non-Catholic, stay in the pews.." speech I hear in all the churches nowadays? It's not compelling for the lost Catholics that wanna make their way back. Something wrong with that pope... I hope he finds enlightenment through tolerance... WWJD? read more

Saint Bonaventure parish has made it such a pleasure to attend 10:30 Sunday morning mass. I love the music and the people and the priests. You must get here early, though because sometimes it may be standing room only. They must be doing something right because more and more people are joining this church. I believe they call them the catechumins....spelt wrong I am sure. read more

My favorite church community, they are great and are always there as a helping hand.

When I first moved to this area 20 years ago, I volunteered in the Sunday school for almost a year and attended regular mass. Shortly after, when I wanted to baptize my firstborn here, they claimed that I was not a member of the church. Why? Because I chose to donate money without using the parish envelopes. They based my membership on money. Very sad. Over the years, I have tried to come back on occasion and never felt welcome. I did not send my children to this school because many of the kids that we know that go there in their grades are bullies with families who feel that they can decide who does and does not belong. Very sad - the other churches that I have attended have never made my family feel so unwelcome. read more

On Sunday after mass I go to the hall to get donuts for my mom. Who is unable to attend mass anymore. This past Sunday the president of the pastoral committee was sitting at the head of the table. He informed me that Fr. Joe wanted all donuts consumed on the grounds. When I explained that I took donuts to my 85 year old mother. He again said that the donuts were to be eaten on the grounds per Fr. Joe. Then asked me who said the mass. I told him it was Fr. Tranh. He then wanted to know if I knew that Fr Joe was the pastor. How heart breaking to have someone so rude represent the pastoral council and Fr. Joe. I am my husband and two sisters will no longer buy donuts at the church we will go to the donut shop. I have been attending mass for 11 years now at St. Bonaventure's. How sad that we may have to change churches because of some one who chooses to be un-Christian. read more

The Church building is a prime example of Early 70's contemporary church architecture. Ugly and utilitarian to say the least. Its as if the Modernist church architects incorporated every architectural cliché of the period into this building. Altar that looks like a plain table? Check. Minimalist contemporary stained glass windows? Check. Amphitheatre style seating? Check. Ultra modern Crucifix / Corpus combo? Check. Video screen? Check. As befits the building, the masses I've attended lack reverence. At one Mass the Priest walked back in forth in front of the congregation speaking on his wireless mike as if he was on a TV talk show, cracking jokes and he seemed to forget that we had gathered to worship Jesus Christ. The 5:00 " Life Teen" Mass might as well be at Calvary Chapel or a Protestant Mega church.. You would never recognize it as a Catholic Mass. The sad part about it is most of these folks think this is what mass is supposed to be like... Hate to break it to you but you've been ripped off... of all the Beauty and awe and majesty that is the Roman Catholic Mass and Roman Catholic church architecture. read more

It feels very strange to be judging with stars the church I attend. But I felt after reading all the other reviews that my voice needed to be heard. I am a returning catholic. It was by the grace of God that I found St. Bonaventure. The Catholic church has changed some, but the most important parts are still there. I feel the mass, the rosary, and reconciliation provide me with the strength I need for my spiritual life. The church family could be judgmental, but I find the opposite to be true. I attend returning catholic meetings, divorced catholic program and Thursday morning bible study. I find a welcoming smiling group of members. They are so fortunate to have never missed any of this as I have. Church is love of Christ felt from his sacraments and his members. Thank you St. Bonaventure. read more
