Definitely one of the better ED's if I had to compare. Check in person was lovely and quick, efficient and kind. The person who did my vitals was great. Taylor the RN (who served in the Navy) was excellent, friendly, funny, gentle, SO kind. Dr Mattheson (sp?) was knowledgeable, patient, an excellent provider, quick, very friendly. Went in Saturday night because I had a foreign object that went into my toe. I tried to remove it myself with a pocket knife (don't worry I'm a nurse) but the pocket knife in my first aid kit was too dull. This ED was the only place opened close to sunriver. I was checked in quickly, had my vitals taken quickly. Moved to a bed in the hall quickly. I must admit, working in healthcare myself I felt SO embarrassed for coming in taking up a bed when my issue was so minor. But due to childcare issues it was the only time I could feasibly go. I believe there was concern for my safety or they may not have wanted me to hear the conflict happening in another room so they moved me swiftly to another area of the hall, I wasn't bothered by the other patient but it was kind that they wanted to move me. But after they had me settled in the new location I was treated quickly by Dr Matheson, then bandaged up by Taylor my RN. Top quality care, made me feel better and got the huge deeply embedded splinter out of my toe. Offered me pain meds and gave me wound care supplies and sent me on my way. Overall very pleased with my care, probably wouldn't have even gotten as good of care at the place I work (just kidding, the providers and nurses where I work are great). Would rate the very very highly. read more

I am in from out of town and am currently seated in the Waiting room going on 5 hours. I have watched people who arrived after me come and go while I wait to be seen. I have never had a worse experience. Also they should consider turning the air conditioning off. This is absolutely ridiculous. read more

No one wants to need to visit the Emergency Room but most of us will probably have to at one time or another. Our turn came up and we felt like St Charles was doing a bang up job. Every one we interacted with from the guy at the door screening people to the sign in lady to the triage nurse to the nurses to the ER Doctor and even the kind worker that pointed us to the way out were quick, competent and polite. Great care and competent professionals. I hope you don't need to experience this first hand but feel confident that if you do need them that you will be in very good hands. read more

2/19/24 The absolute worst experience at any medical facility that I have ever been in. Please keep in mind that I raised 4 children and I am now 60 years of age. So, lots of medical visits. The list of why and how horribly this visit was is literally too long to go into. The top of the list is Kylie who checked me in at the front desk. I would comment on care but I never received any care. I am not kidding when I say that I would go to my dog's veterinarian before I would come back to this medical facility in an emergency. Abysmal. I went in with chest pain and really high blood pressure. Kelly, the nurse, fat fingered my IV and screwed up two blood tests, which I'm sure I'll get charged for. Dr. Peoples said he was going to give me some type of sedative to help with the stress and high blood pressure - nope. He didn't provide the care he said he would. After my EKG and CBC came back normal, I requested a discharge. What a complete joke. I certainly hope they take better care of someone experiencing something more severe than high blood pressure from stress. read more

I was on a camping trip with my family from out of town and needed medical attention. And I'm so glad I found St. Charles Hospital in Bend. From the minute I walked into the emergency department I was taken care of in a very kind, efficient and professional matter. It was about 7 o'clock at night when I checked in with a friendly lady (unfortunately I don't remember her name). The check in was easy and quick. After only spending a short period in the waiting area I was seen by a wonderful triage nurse (Jacquie). She asked me some questions and I was immediately taken into a room where another nurse (Mike) looked after me. The room and the hospital itself is very clean and modern. Mike took some blood, brought me warm blankets and started an IV line. Just shortly afterwards I was seen by Dr. Ryan Petersen and nurse Emma who did an exam. Both were very respectful and professional. I also had to get an ultrasound and Erin made me feel calm and took care of me ever so gently. As my husband and son were waiting in our RV just outside on the parking lot we were given a list with nearby hotels and parking facilities, which was truly thoughtful. Both my husband and son were able to come and see me for a short period of time for some much needed support. Later that night I was discharged and Cody one of the hospital administrators took my details. We had a brief yet deep conversation and I could feel that I was not just a number or patient, but a human being with physical and emotional needs. The staff at St. Charles hospital is just excellent. They do listen and they do care!! Dr. Petersen came to see me one more time before leaving the hospital and handing me my discharge papers as well as explaining what had happened and how to handle the aftercare. Even though I was relieved to leave the hospital Nurse Mike made farewell just a little harder! Mike: you are an amazing nurse and such a wonderful person with a big heart! I'm so thankful for you! I must say that I'm more than impressed with the care this hospital provides. The emergency department surely has a fantastic team and everyone is going out of their way to make patients feel comfortable, reassured and safe. I have so much appreciation, respect and gratitude for each and everyone going the extra mile! Not sure how to update my original post but i was sent back to emergency room from the quick care. I was in congestive heart failure.. the emergency room sucks bad.. cuz i had to wait several more hours but once you get called back to a bed, and i ended up being there for 3 days , the people in the back snd up on the floors are the best ever! They made my stay there the best possible! Everyone went out of their way to help.. so if you can just get past ER this is a great hospital read more

I had the misfortune of spending three hours in the ER today and being sent home....despite the lousy, lazy excuse for a doctor openly admitting that it would be best for me to have surgery within 48 hours. Yep. For real. To add insult to injury, he wouldn't listen to much of anything I said. Didn't listen to medications list. Evidently didn't even listen to my chief complaint since he LITERALLY read off a list of significantly lesser symptoms and told me to come back immediately if I were to experience any of them. I said, "Oh. So, if [the chief complaint] lessens?" He chuckled like I'd made a joke and he walked out. He assured me I'd at least be able to follow up immediately and still get the surgery within that timeframe. Uh, no. The department I was referred to won't open until Monday and, then, I have to set an appointment to meet with a new doctor and just hope they'll be able to schedule the surgery quickly enough that my health is not already even more negatively impacted or worse. Bonus: He didn't even tell me he'd ordered a prescription. He just rattled off "start with taking two per day" (Two what????) and kept on going to the list of symptoms I referred to above and I couldn't even ask him what it was due to him hightailing it out of there. The ONLY reasons I'm not leaving just one star are the nurse and the phlebotomist. Those two gals are worth their weight in gold, so, I've added a star for them. read more

OMG, what a frickin' pit! Brought a friend in. Told them what the issue was at check-in. Later they had the incorrect information/didn't know why my friend was there. Are you kidding me?! On top of that, my friend has been here before but this time around, St Charles didn't have the allergies to medication listed in their charts. Ummm?? The first room looked like a converted closet, the chairs were filthy, I didn't even want to sit down. The second room - the walls had something stained and dripping down them and when they took my friend to run tests and moved the bed, I saw there was just all sorts crap on the floor and the floor itself was filthy. We felt forgotten. Horrid communication. Slow, so freaking slow. We'd been in a room for 3 hours and had yet to see a doctor! Staff is rude, rude, rude. They're having a great time socializing with each other though. After accompanying my friend to St. Charles Emergency I really, really, really, REALLY hope I never have to check in here myself. read more

I am an 83 year old woman on a trip with my daughter to Bend, Oregon. On 4/20/2023 , I had AFib symptoms and ended up at St Charles Health System for emergency care. I was very afraid and didn't know what to expect. The triage nurse, Jackie, put my mind at ease and said my daughter could be with me. My mind was put at ease and I was immediately taken care of by the wonderful staff of this facility. There was Albert, Gabe, Dr. Kelly Smith, MD and others who were taking tests and giving me medications to return my heart to normal. They were empathetic and kind to me. Dr. Smith gave me good advice and encouraged me to see my cardiologist when I returned to California. I was released the same day after getting my heart back to normal. I was visiting my in laws and had a intolerable pain in my stomach. The quick responses and operational efficiencies in the ER was the best I have seen. I would give a NEGATIVE1000 stars! I have NOTHING but ANGER and DISDAIN for this PATHETIC, INCOMPETENT, NO EMPATHY, POOR EXCUSE FOR A MEDICAL FACILTIY! My brother ended up there last week, when his visiting nurse saw him and how bad of shape he was in, he couldnt move his legs and had loss of feeling, She called for an ambulance to take him to St Charles ER. The medics were rough and careless in handling him and called in ahead and said the transport was "routine",.. they gave him nothing for pain during the 30 mile transport. In the past he was given injections or meds to ease the acute pain and stabilize him. He has suffered from severe, long term acute pain and has been incapacitated and suffered from severe degeneration of back, spinal and hip compression fractures that left him in chronic and acute non stop pain. Has been disabled for nearly 25 years. He has had multiple back surgeries over the course of several years, that have only happened after each time, it left him worse than before,.. last one was in Bend less than a year ago,. He has not been able to walk and is in a wheelchair, he cant take care of himself for the smallest things, he dealt with loss of feeling on his right side, muscle loss weakness, incontinence, and also suffered depression,.. just to name a few of many things. He was suicidal 6-7 months ago and was taken in by ambulance after 911 was called,.. only to be sent home with NO help. He has had several admitted hospitalizations in the last couple of years, with administered pain injections and medications to stabilize him. Specialist talked about other possibilities, like a morphine implanted pain pump. I know he spent his 60th Birthday back in Feb. for a month in the hospital,.. he was that bad!,.. and also had one other long admittance a month or so later. He now ends up in this ER again this past week by ambulance in such bad shape, is left on a gurney in the hallway for 6-8 hours, no admittance, was told no beds available in ER or in hospital, because they were full. He was then told by a rude snotty nurse after 6 hours of no treatment or care,.. "You have been here 3 times recently,.. and you must just want drugs" After a few more hours an ER Doctor said that the CT scan just showed all his old compression fractures, nothing new, My brother tried to explain to the CT techs and ER Doctor that they did not take the correct images of area of the problem and the ordered test was wrong. It fell on deaf ears!!,.. He was sent home with worthless meds of a Tylenol, 2 tabs of gabapentin and a valium. He was HUMILIATED AGAIN by the disregard, had absolutely no care given and treated rudely and dismissively He was given no help to get home in La Pine and had to hire a taxi and endure a long painful ride home. On Thursday July 29th, I get a call from our mom saying, He's DEAD,.. He left a note, stating: " He couldn't take the pain anymore, has no quality of life anymore, and the disregard and treatment of the medical community he has been repeatedly handed, along with the HUMILIATION he felt from the last treatment by all in the ER. And lastly stated.. "Please forgive me, there is NO HOPE. I love you". His last request was to please take care of his kitties. PS: SUE THE BASTARDS! I am from out of town. I have a calcium deposit as per my x-ray. I waited for over 2 hours for a cortisone injection, from the pharmacy, there a total of 5 hours, and I left. But not before the less then helpful nurse with the bedside manner of a bed pan told me how busy they were and that I should be grateful, somehow. Staffing issues are not my problem being unable to move my arm is my problem. If they can't handle minor emergencies there how did they handle covid? I guess if it was big business to cure people it would happen but it isin't. read more

I get working as a nurse in an emergency room is stressful but I went there with my girlfriend and the nurses gossiped about her condition when she was. Right there. So was I. We heard them diminishing her pain and condition based on visual observations never having spoken to this patient. Telling the doctor "she looked fine" "she walked in looking perfectly okay" and not taking her emergency seriously. It's fine if you want to gossip. But maybe do it where the patients you are gossiping about can't hear you? This isn't greys anatomy babe....... read more

Had a really negative time here where it felt like the nurses and doctor did not listen or care. I asked if they had a certain kind of doctor on staff that specialized in the issue I came to the ER for and they said I, "could use google and find out". But...isn't that why you go to a hospital? To find help? Maybe they're just always overworked and not taken care of well enough by St. Charles so they're all burned out, but it was incredibly isolating and awful. I felt scared because no one would explain why I was having my symptoms. They put me on fluids and then kicked me out, but it didn't solve anything? read more

I had a serious emergency visit yesterday and security staff seemed way more concerned with me immediately moving my car out of the delivery area than helping me get immediate aid to the stricken person I was bringing to the hospital urgently. Then after three hours of tests the doctor and nurse said they had no idea what was causing the serious problem so we were being discharged. Medical care seems to have reached a new low. We will be seeking medical aid in Portland instead. read more

Labor day weekend I became violently ill with what we suspected to be food poisoning. Even though they had a record breaking night of 180 patients (previously 140 patients), they got me in almost immediately and did an incredible job taking care of me! The nurse I had even took the time to warm up my IV fluid bag (I'm a vet assistant so I notice these things) and did everything possible to make me feel better while the Dr. was tied up. They genuinely cared about my well-being and instantly made me feel safe. It was Monday (Labor day) about 3 AM, I believe my nurses were named Andrew...and maybe Charlie? And the dude running the EKG on me managed to make me laugh even though I felt like I was dying from food poisoning :) Thanks again so much St. Charles! Keep up the great work! read more
