This place was one of the most hopeful sights out of the all recovery effort scenes we visited. New Orleans's 9th Ward area had a great number of musicians living, and alot of them were gone, in many ways. We drove around the neighborhood that only had foundations of houses left and weed growing on top of them. Everything around there was washed away, the tour guide said. keeping the music culture is very important to people in New Orleans, and building houses for the musicians to return and start living in NOLA was the idea of this project. Houses looked questionable, but the effort should be recognized. The tour guide said 2 major good things came out of the storm. This village and pouring support from many people, and government and education system reform. The city was so rotten, it took Katrina to give the city better government and schools. They said that more than 5 officials left the office since the storm, 2 of them being the jail now. I've met a few people who said they lost everything. I was crying about my cellphone that I left on the plane coming there. I felt ashamed.

Located in the old downtown area of Thibodaux, if you're on W 3rd Street you can see it and all its imposing glory clearly. Once you step through the doors be ready to do the metal detector cha-cha... I'm pretty sure the only folks that get to bypass it are the one's with badges on their shirts and guns on their hips... maybe the local lawyers get to skip it but if you're not a regular or a John Law be prepared... Gives off a nice turn of the last century vibe... all my business was conducted on the 1st floor and like most old school courthouses it is a small space. I was in Division A and two other of the 5 total divisions are located in the main courthouse (3 total) and the other 2 divisions are located in the Annex across the street.... They have a helpful sign on the main doors posted to let you know in which building each division is located... All 3 courtrooms are located on the 1st floor and I expect all 3 courtrooms are small if my experience with Division A is any guide but even though small you get that courtroom sense of gravitas from the hard backed church pews in the gallery to the judge's bench.... On the day I was there myself, the other lawyers and the gallery got quite the treat as the Judge had to conduct his criminal 72 hour hearings which he did via Skype and we got to watch on the 2 flat screen TVs in the courtroom....a real motley crew of society was paraded on the screen with everything from warrants on failure to pay child support ($12K in arrears) to Possession with Intent (Dude had 10 baggies of Weed in his left pocket but only 1 baggie in his right pocket.... left pocket must have been deeper than the right I guess) to a young lady and her boyfriend charged with burglary of her family's business (The Dairy Cool fyi) but those 2 really stepped in it cause when the 5-0 showed up to arrest them they had meth and weed in plain sight with minor children in the house... That's not good! So those 2 had a laundry list of charges not even connected to the main crime.... So all in all it was an interesting wait.... Again though if you end up inside this building it usually isn't for something fun but if your in Thibodaux head down and enjoy a view of the building and maybe the grounds as you walk around old downtown....

They control access to the Arabi Sugar museum which is nearby in the old parish jail. The ladies I have encountered that work here are informative and very helpful. The knowledge they have of the area is immense. There is a sugar festival here annually that is the perfect embodiment of a small town festival. I seriously parked across the street, for free. Arabi is a small town about 20 minutes away from the center of New Orleans and offers a variety of things to do that are off the beaten path, to include the Chalmette Battlefield, the only battle that was won during the Revolutionary War, but that is a tale for another review. A piece of valuable information I found was that they have the contact information to take a tour of the Domino Sugar Factory that is nearby, but you have to call and schedule it and have a minimum amount of people to come for it to happen. Come down and see what you can do for fun in this area.

I was there to renew my bartending license and was expecting some impoliteness and a lonnnnng wait. To my surprise, nothing of the kind occurred. Friendly staff. I feel like the building has a bit too much room for all their equipment, etc... Either that, or they weren't 100% moved in yet.
