It's been 5 years since my review and I now have an 8th grader and a 4th grader at St. Dunstan's. We have been at the school since 2015 and still love it. The principal, faculty, and staff truly care about each student and it shows. If you are considering private high school, I highly recommend St. Dunstan's to lay the academic foundation. My daughter loves her teachers and said that the high school entrance exam was relatively easy compared to what they are learning at St. Dunstan's. I've spoken to many parents who transferred their kids in for middle school who've said they wished they had started at St. Dunstan's sooner because it is such a welcoming and warm environment. They have a ton of extracurriculars and events. Sports intramurals for K-3 and competitive sports for 4-8th. We have musical theater classes and performances. As well as Spanish classes and technology. Every month there are family friendly events- from family movie night, Casino Night, Lobster Feed, the father/daughter dance, family bingo night, lady knights and men clubs events, and so many fun events. We have the spring festival and middle school dances. Fun Day with games and an end of year school wide picnic. The kids are kind, respectful, and inclusive. The parent community is amazing and we have made lifelong friendships with other families. Choosing St. Dunstan's for our kids is probably one of the best decisions we have made for their academic, emotional, and social well being. We are new transplant to St Dustan families. We were at different school before. My son transferred in at 4th grade. We originally were very worried about his transition and leaving all his friends and his known environment. It has been smooth transition so far. The Families in St Dunstan are very welcoming to our family. My son doesn't normally play team sports that involved balls, he made an exception with the baseball team in St Dunstan. He has thrived so much over the last few months we transitioned. Not only his grades are excellent but also his mental wellbeing has improved so much. He was encouraged to participate more in the class and he did, which he didn't do in the previous school. He participated in the class Spelling Bee that required him to speak and spell in front of everyone which was impossible for him to do before. The school staffs are very nice. They are very attentive of my son and our families. The teachers that he has, have been so accommodating and supportive in making him thrive in school. The school has Science, technology, Spanish, Art in Action and Creative Art. I was allowed to teach how to plant tulips and vegetables in their school plots that the Science teacher incorporated it to his lesson. There are many Non Catholic families as well and you wouldn't feel that they weren't part of the community. In terms of education, I observe that some of the teachers are willing to give extra help to those that need help which they do outside of the school hours. They also have resource teachers for reading and mental health. I also see that there will be accelerated Math for those who are advanced in Math. This will start in 5th grade. read more

We are a new family at St. Dunstan and it's been such a wonderful experience. We are blessed with a school dedicated to academics and building a strong foundation for the students with incredible support from the principal, teachers, faculty, staff and parents. Ms. Pacheco & Mrs. Anderegg (Mrs. A) are an amazing duo and perfect at welcoming kids. We have the TK opportunity to be with the Kindergarten class and my kid is starting to master reading and writing! My kid is always excited to learn in class. It's a close knit group amongst the parents that in fact, I have met and become good friends with many of them. We plan monthly play dates because the students have developed close and supportive friendships, inside and outside of school. Everyone looks out for each other and wants the best of other children than their own. St. Dunstan has dedicated teachers who work incredibly hard, long hours and deserve enormous respect for their dedication and investment in the students. The teachers know, care and work with each of these kids. We see this daily, especially from Ms. Pacheco & Mrs. A! The front office, Ms. Laurie & Ms. Vera are friendly, super helpful and loving. They always find a way to make it easier for the students & the parents. The principal, Dr. Sandoval, is friendly, extremely dedicated and always puts the students first. You can see and feel the love and passion in the daily activities and events. Everyone here is just so wonderful, especially with the staff that have been here for many years including the Vice Principal, Ms. Calaunan. They are proud and happy to be part of this wonderful school, and that says a lot! The students work hard and are happy here. It is a great place for kids to bloom, shine and be recognized. St. Dunstan is a great school. My daughter is at kindergarten, and we all like the experience of learning and growing here. For Kindergarten, it combines academic learning, personalities and social abilities building. My kid is happy to go to school every day. She has been taught so well in Language/Math subjects that she has exceeded grade levels based on tests. She also likes the Art, Music, Tech, PE and Spanish classes. Ms. P and Mrs. A are experienced and super nice teachers. They set high standards on learning and personal growth, but also tailoring to each child's overall progress. I like the daily/weekly communication from both teachers. It makes knowing my child's school experience so much easier. For the school, it feels like a welcoming big family. The office is so supportive daily. Principle S. and VP C. are always there taking care of the school and students' needs. Teachers are friendly, students are polite and caring. Parents remain close and support each other. SD offers several activities every month that parents can enjoy with their kids: Annual festival, Breakfast with Santa, Art activities, Music Performance, etc. It also has many sports programs. The Extended Care program after school time has fun activities and is very affordable. My kid enjoys staying in school with her friends all the time. It says that it takes a village to raise a child. The teachers here are not helpful in developing your child's character. They are not understanding and are very punitive except for their former and current principal. It also does not help that there's a lot of parents who have nothing else to do except hang out in school and constantly watch their child and not let them play like kids. All they do is gossip about other parents if they don't want you in their group. Never felt welcomed and included here considering it is a Catholic School. read more

We have two kids at St. Dunstan and are very happy with the school. The academic programming is strong and well rounded. Math is close to what I remember for middle school, but the science curriculum is tough. When I help my child with her science homework, I often have to read the lesson twice. It has a diverse student body and strong down-to-earth community. As a multicultural family, the former is important to me. The school draws students from Millbrae and nearby communities, exposing the students to the broader area, which I think is a positive. While Catholics make up the majority of the student body, a number of the students are non-Catholic - also a positive. It's great that our kids can be part of a community where the middle school kids are respectful and families are supportive. I should also mention that the school's administration and staff are very supportive. Their dedication to the school and their students shows. The facilities could use some TLC, but I don't think that impacts learning or having fun, so it's not a big deal for me. read more

We are a new family to St. Dunstan. I must say our experience has been nothing short of amazing. The teachers, staff, families is such a welcoming community that instantly made us feel "at home". The first thing that really drew me to the school was even before school started we received a welcome email from the Kinder host family welcoming us and introducing us to the school and being a liason as we begin our Knight journey. Forward, first day of school there was a welcome reception and physically met the host parents and other St. Dunstan families (of all grades) and they were all so warm and approachable and inviting to help us navigate the new school and the school year. St. Dunstan has active parent involvement and allows us to build relationships amongst parents of all grades. The school invites parents to be actively involved such as the Lady Knights and Men's Club where parents have opportunity to build relationships and receive feedback from other established families and new incoming families. I attended my first Lady Knight meeting when the school year started and was hesitant at first as did not know anyone beside my host family. To my surprise all mother's were very welcoming and open for discussion and learning about our children and how the school and community has impacted their development. St. Dunstan also provides a variety of extra curricular activities including intramural baseball, chess club, basketball, volleyball to name a few. Additionally, for working parents they have extended care which I should mention is so much affordable compared to putting him in a public school with after school care. They only charge you by how long the student is being cared for. We were actually waiting to get my son into the public school in the area but on wait list. We looked into after school care and it cost twice more compared to St. Dunstan (including the tuition). This in itself was already a huge plus and found that in itself so surprising. My son is in his first year at this school and was planning to have it temporary. However, with the experience we've had thus far and the community and the relationships our son and us parents have received and built we plan to keep him in as long as we can. My husband and I chose to enroll our child in private school not just for a smaller class room size and additional educational resources, but because life seems to be moving faster these days so we wanted to try to slow it down for our children just a bit so they can enjoy their childhood, focus on their education while building a strong foundation and forge supportive friendships along the way. We toured a few local private schools and what drew us to St. Dunstan was the overall feeling of the tight knit community. It felt like a family who looked out for each other. Parents who didn't only want what's best for for their own children, but also for yours. The peace of mind that provides an incoming kinder family is in my opinion priceless. St. Dunstan provides a sports program, musical theatre, PE, art in action, technology and Spanish as well as after school clubs like science and chess to name a few. There is surely something for any student to flourish in. All schools have their strengths and weaknesses, it's about finding the right fit for your family and what you feel is best for your child(ren). Providing them with a positive educational experience will undoubtedly build upon their confidence, strengths and skills while setting them up for success in their future endeavors. My two kids have been attending St. Dunstan for the past four years, after we transferred from another Catholic school. We visited this school during their open house in January 2017, extremely pleased to see how the teachers were very welcoming and friendly to our kids. It truly was a great first impression that has stayed with me to this day (as we'd had some bad experiences from other places in the past). My kids are very happy with their teachers and enjoy school as much as any child would. Art-in-Action, Musical Theatre and PE are all built-in with the academic curriculum, as this helps break up the day. Currently Spanish is through an on-line program, which they seem to be benefiting from and enjoy working through. All around, I feel the kids are getting a well-rounded education. The teachers that my kids have had, have been patient, nurturing and kind. During normal times (pre-pandemic), any time you pass by the front office staff, no matter how busy they may be, they always have a smile on their faces and greet us with enthusiasm. The school has a diverse community and I've never felt unwelcome, despite not being Catholic myself. The families who make up the St. Dunstan community are supportive of each other, and I can say that I truly have developed some amazing friendships myself. Lastly, St. Dunstan's has really done a great job of handling the pandemic and providing a safe place for the children to come and learn, for those who have chosen to be on-site. The abrupt change in March 2020 was hard for everyone, but adjustments were made, and from what my kids have received this year, the teachers and staff have made an incredible effort to continue to provide a high standard of education to the kids, at school and at home. read more

This is our first year at St. Dunstan and we could not be happier with the community, faculty, and level of education. It's now March of 2021 - our daughter is still at St. Dunstan's and couldn't be happier. And the pandemic hasn't slowed her learning down one bit! A year ago when this thing began, the school had its challenges to get up to speed with remote learning - as every school did, I suppose. However, after some time, the Faculty, Administration and Staff have done a wonderful job keeping the kids learning - both in and out of school! St. Dunstan has been open for in-school learning - Safely! - for months. Months of learning that are precious to my daughter and the other kids. I've talked to other parents who have been very happy with the Administration and staff and the sacrifices that they have made to provide a positive learning environment for the kids. The teachers have done so much and have put in so much time to create safe learning environments for the kids - I couldn't be happier having my daughter back in the classroom with her friends. She began virtual - and with the technology that the school has put in and the parent volunteers who have helped keep the technology running smoothly - the virtual classroom, too, has been stellar. All in all, I know that there are other options out there, but when you think about how kids are learning these days, St. Dunstan's has been a beacon of light, showing how a school can function safely and securely, providing safe learning environments for the kids, providing technology and the resources for the teachers while at the same time providing for their safety, and providing safe parental interactions while on the school grounds. Every place has its challenges, but when you look at the fact that the teachers here spend hours after school continuing to work for the children, when you see a principal who donates his time and energy towards trying to make the school a great place for the children, well, my wife and I are very happy that we have found such a great environment and school for our daughter. read more

During COVID 2021, I had no idea where to enroll my son for kindergarten for in person learning. Luckily I have friends whose kids attend St. Dunstan's and reassured me that the teachers are amazing as well as the community. It's a very welcoming and diverse community. My son learned how to read and write by the end of the year because of Ms. Pacheco and Mrs. A. The principal, Mr. Spray. and staff are so sweet. And we had an awesome carnival this year! I have four children - 1 graduated from St. Dunstan this year and 3 are still going to school there. They all love the school: their teachers and their friends. My high schooler tells me how much she misses SD regularly. She still hangs out with her SD friends even though they go to different high schools. The teachers are supportive and caring. As a parent, I found that I could talk to them when my children need support. The parents are out of this world - they are so supportive and wonderful. There is a saying "It takes a village to raise a child". This is the village where parents can truly trust and count other parents to help raise their children together. You'll find some of the most generous and loving individuals among this group of parents. I also love how transparent the "semi-new" principal (Mr. Spray) and the board members are. In the past, the parents were often left in the dark about budgeting and expenses. I appreciated the new management's effort to bring awareness of where the fundraising income is being directed to. You can see the results of it from the upgrades of the school facilities. The only reason why I give this school a 4 instead of 5 is the lack of gym for sports purposes. The school has to rent another gym for volleyball or baseball practices. I understand that it will take millions of dollars to build one, and at this point, it's just not visible for the school budget. At the end of the day though, when I see my kids happy, thriving and moral; the lack of access to the school's personal gym seems minor. My children are being fed spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically at SD. As a psychotherapist, I cannot emphasize enough on how important it is to address the whole child's development - something that I believe SD is doing a great job of. read more

I can absolutely see the changes my child has undergone and I'm so proud of his growth. The staff, administration, and parents all contribute and are a true testament to "it takes a village to raise a child." Our daughter graduated from St. Dunstan this past year. She had been at the school since Kindergarten and it has been a wonderful experience for the whole family. We believe she has received an excellent education. In the first grade it was determined that she had difficulty with reading and spelling. She worked with the resource teacher in a small group setting and by the 8th grade, she was reading far above her grade level and loved to read. The dedicated teachers, administration and staff are very caring and put in the extra effort to help the kids succeed. We loved being a part of this school community. Our daughter has moved on to high school now, but we will always fondly remember our St. Dunstan experience. read more

Unbelievable! I transferred my child here only to have to pull my child out after one year. Why? My child came from an EXCELLENT private school. Excelled through out the years there. Great personality and very out spoken. We move our child to St. Dunstans for one year-and realized that this school confirmed all aspects of my prior review. We move our child out to a school where teachers are "required" to have proper credentials and a degree to back that up. St. Dunstans administration will damage your child's self esteem. Why? This school is ran by a Phd credentialed principal who taught HS physical education. The vice principal is short tempered and is not only sarcastic and rude to the children, but I'm sure the parents can do without the old school mentality and attitude. When I say old school this includes the refusal to learn how to use current technology. How do you think that mentality transfers over to the kids they are responsible for educating. Kinder, 2nd, 6th and the 8th grade teachers are an exception. They care about the kids and respect the parents. This school has 9 grade levels and there ONLY 4 teachers who I would trust with my child's education. Pretty sad statistics. Does your child like Sports? St.Dunstans sports program with the exception of track is poorly managed. Parents who care about the sports program and who are willing to help by donating their time on coaching are completely ignored. They do not allow CCD students to join their program - they will have to wait a year to show "commitment" (ONLY catholic school to require this). Whether your child plays sports or not you pay an annual fee of over $200. You would think a school ran by a prior PE teacher would excel in sports. Damn shame... Does your child like music? No programs here. They've removed the school music program. It's now out sourced. You're better off enrolling your child directly with the/a music school. Do you like a principal who is disrespected by the teachers? A+ at St.Dunstans Do you like a school where a teacher trips and falls over a backpack and calls the child "stupid"? A+ at St.Dunstans Do you like dealing with a school where most teachers are NOT up to speed in technology? A+ at St. Dunstans Do you like a school where you have to teach your child at night because they are too busy with art during class? A+ at St. Dunstans Do you like a school where the text books are old you can google the answers to the homework? A+ at St. Dunstans Don't be fooled...Millbrae has AWESOME public schools. One of the best school districts this side of the bay. You would expect that the only catholic school in the city would have similar if not better standards. That's not the case. The school is a commuter school. 90% of the population are from neighboring city. 10% are from Millbrae. Afterall, why pay to have your child educated under these conditions. If you live in Millbrae take advantage of public schools. If you live in neighboring cities look into St.Roberts, St. Veronica's, Our Lady of Mercy or St.Thomas More. Don't get caught up with all the hype about St. Dunstans being in Millbrae. There's no hype around it. read more

I had a child who attended this school but I was forced to leave. I could see the administration was awful. Within the first two months I observed the lack of staff watching the children during recess and lunch. I don't believe a 2 to 120+ ratio is appropriate, and others times there is ONE parent watching all the kids. I attended a few meetings. One about sports where all the parents were rallied together by other parents because the principal was not being forth coming. Initial intention was to eliminate sports. Another meeting was on funds. Allocation of money. When parents asked questions, I noticed there were some avoidance in answering those questions. Their annual school festival brings in the most money. I was excited initially, thinking the children will receive new equipment, but I found out more than 75% of those funds are given to the church. Yet it is the parents who set up, volunteer and clean up. The school can use some work I agree with the other review. But they will never be able to get the work done or get new text books and computers if they have no funds. It was a mentally draining experience. I don't shelter any of my kids and I don't think an MD from UCLA is a lack of education. But we do have standards. And this school did not meet them. read more

I sent my kids here and it was awful experience. I agree they are money hungry and there is nothing to show for all the money they collect. More importantly there academics is so far behind the public school. At least a year or two, especially in Math. I also agree with the other review. Teachers are unfair and they are burned out. One teacher gives all kids a C the first quarter even if their papers and test are straight A's. If you bring it up to the principal he does nothing. Physical and verbal bullying is allowed. If you bring it to the principal he does nothing but blame your child. The Archdiocese does nothing about it as well. They discriminate against children who learn differently than others. Whether it be above or below average. Which does not make sense to me. Why would you not want a smart successful student in your school to use as an example. Save your kids the abuse and save your money. I would never recommend this school to anyone! read more

My daughter has attended St. Dunstan since Kindergarten. Every teacher has gone beyond my expectation with their academics and providing a good foundation for my child to excel and grow. Most importantly my child comes home with a smile and continues to want to go to school to learn. In my life as a child, I had never went to a private school. This is the first time. I had experienced private schools. I understand the prices and what other people are saying about being expensive but I can say it is well worth it especially this school. I had never seen a principal like Bruce Colville who goes beyond to help his students. Even the kinder teacher and aide are the nicest teachers that are very helpful. If you have some extra money, please send them to daycare. The staff are very nice and friendly. They made sure the kids go home and always verify with the parents to make sure they are sent home. They go the extra mile to make sure your kids are safe and not just let who ever pick up your kids. If your children struggle in homework, the staff make sure to help them with homework and even the teachers stay after school to help also. read more

My two daughters have attended St. Dunstan School since my older daughter was 4 yrs old (yes a young Kindergartner, she is now 31 years old) and my younger one who is now 26 yrs old. When they were in school, we had a great group of families from different grades who make everything work. We had the Women's Club which I joined when my daughter was in Kindergarten, not knowing what this was going to be about. But I knew that I wanted to be involved in this school so I volunteered for many different things. I always felt that we were all a family because you know that you are with those kids and parents from K through 8th grade. Then the festivals are really fun because we were the ones that started having carnival rides instead of just booths, and we would have many families from different schools in many counties just come for our festival. Every single parent is involved in making these festivals a success. And trust me if you have never been to these festivals you need to come to experience it. I have been involved in St Dunstans because I always feel that you always want to make it better. When my older daughter was in 4th grade, I had the 8th graders ask if I could be their Cheerleader Coach because they knew that I was into dancing. Usually, a parent from the class volunteers for this but even the parents wanted me. So do you believe I coached those 8th graders and we entered competitions, in which they won those competitions. I started putting dances together because I knew that I wanted to make sure these kids would be kept busy academically but also have fun too. I coached my younger daughters Volleyball and Basketball team from 4th to 8th grade. Doing all of this because many parents cared to make St. Dunstan a great school. Dr. Colville is a great principal who is always there for all the students and the parents. He is totally involved himself to make sure that every child is taken care of. What I love about Dr. Colville is that no matter what the situation is he is always there. Like for example after the dances, we have to clean up the Parish Center Dr. Colville is there with a broom and mop helping me out. He could easily delegate that (he is the principal of course( but he doesn't. This is his school so he makes sure that everything is taken care of. And great news for all of you....my granddaughter is attending St. Dunstan's too, She is now a 2nd grader but she has been at the school since Kindergarten. I was so happy when my daughter said that she will be attending St. Dunstan even though they had checked the other Catholic Schools in the area. I think my daughter knew what a great community we have at St. Dunstan's plus she remembered when she was growing up there how all the teachers, parents and staff were. It was like she was coming home! Even my younger daughter who is 26 years old has been coaching the current 8th grade Volleyball team since they were in 6th grade. You see, its the involvement of everyone that makes St. Dunstan's a great school! My daughters also got the academic training that got them to Notre Dame High School and St. Ignatius College Prep. From there they went to the University of San Francisco and the University of San Diego. They have grown up to be wonderful career oriented and independent women because they had the foundation from St. Dunstan. They both have wonderful jobs traveling in their current companies and always advancing in their careers. Ilf you are looking for a great school, then you have come to the right place. It all starts with the children. We do it for them because they are our future. If you do not build the foundation for them then they will not succeed. You have to start off with a great education, great teachers, and a great environment so you will find that here at St. Dunstan! We love our school so much---:)we are so thankful for all the positive feedback of other parents like ourselves! We all work hard to make the school a wonderful place. Our kids are first are foremost daily!!!:) There's one father that has recently posted very rude remarks about our school:( so so sad and embarassing for the whole community; but both of his kids are STILL HERE??????!!! Very questionable as he posted who he is, and remains angry- no one forces anyone to be anywhere if they don't like something.:( The truth is that the other families and parents know the expectations of a Catholic Education and being part of a Catholic Community is a choice; it is very clearly stated from the beginning. Absolute slander from one family is not acceptable about the staff or principal. this "gentleman/ father" does not clearly understand the commitments and what tuition is about and fundraising--- we are a private school- hello?; he's never here but obviously has a lot to say:(. The other parents here do not agree with this "gentleman's/ fathers" (1) star rating since he posted it this last summer- he is never here and his information is 100% false. Says "The staff and principal are terrible?" if that's the fact, or "people speak down to families" why would you put up with that and remain here?!!!? With irrational statements. Clearly an "odd ball statement". If you have nothing nice to say:# (1) keep it to yourself #(2) Do not stay or remain where you are "unhappy" no on is forcing you- this is America:). But the rest of the families and parents love this community and we will say the truth and keep our school a friendly and welcoming place. We apologize for the comment from this one angry father:(. My daughter is very happy, is receiving a great education and is learning how to be a good citizen. So far she has liked all her teachers (she is just finishing 2nd grade). Unfortunately, I work more than I would like and my daughter has to be in extended care every day. She loves going there as well and has made lots of friends. There is a fun intramural program that starts with kinder and my daughter has been doing volleyball, basketball and track. As the daughter of a teacher I am very sensitive to all the hard work they do and the effort they put in and I really appreciate it. INo school is perfect but we are happy here. read more

This Catholic School is great! They teach spanish,chess,music and cheeleadering and computer class. Teachers are the best! They have grandparents Day too!And Daycare for children.St.Dunstan is a very good School. read more

This school is one of the best schools in the Bay Area. They offer a great education, great sports program,and the school has a great sense of community. They also have many activities if your kid isn't into sports like music (optional), dance (mandatory), chess(optional). There is a great Spanish (mandatory)program. Saint Dunstan is the worst school I have seen, starting with the principal Bruce Colville, and the administrative staff , and the teachers. The principal doesn't take ownership and responsibility. he doesn't do anything to protect the students he has. He has been given no power by the vice principal who is an old lady who is against modernity. Just like all the other teachers: all elderly ladies who can lose their patience, and end up YELLING at the students, what kind of example that teaches our kids??? Class sizes are way too big for a private school. kids are not treated as individuals.There is no communication with the teachers-parents. There have been many incidents with bulliying and issues with the Spanish teacher. The principal (and Vice president) has done nothing about it. The whole school has problems in all areas, and they are not willing to improve or change anything. They treat families and students with no respect, show desdain, refuse to incorporate new technology. They are so badly managed that they imposed a mandatory athletic fee of $200 PER STUDENT (even if your child does not participate in any sport), which will increase every year. Overall, a really bad school to put your chilfren for 9 years: these people will continue soak up your money and yell at your children. read more

Not so sure where all these negative reviews about St. Dunstan's are coming from. I thank the Lord we put our son in St. Dunstan's. In the public school he was a straight "A" student. At St. Dunstan's they make them work for their grades,it was the best decision we ever made.. Also, the parent participation is wonderful, the kids all look out for each other. These negative reviews are from people who do not identify themselves, perhaps if you reveal yourself, Dr. Coleville can help out with the issues you are having, Yelping without your name is like a bully behind a computer. I've always felt my children were safe, well educated and nurtured at St. Dunstan. The faculty and families are kind, down to earth and hardworking. It's a great place to be if you're looking for non-judgemental families and staff who genuinely care about the students' progress and daily experiences. The Principal, Dr. Colville, rolls up his sleeves and shares in all the duties the parents are asked to contribute and participate in.
