Our son has been at Saint Frances Cabrini for four years, and we've loved it. The classes are small (about 20 kids in each class with two classes per grade) so the teachers really get to know each student and give them the attention they need. The campus is gated and feels super safe, which is such a relief as a parent of an elementary school student. The teachers have all been wonderful, caring, patient, and really dedicated. Our son has grown so much here, both academically and socially, and he's made amazing friends. The parent community has really stepped up too! Everyone's so involved and supportive. The recent Cabrini Carnival was a huge success and such a fun event--it reminded us that this school isn't just great for the kids, but for the whole family. Even the teachers do not want to approach the office staff. All the reviews you read about how terrible the office is run are absolutely correct. Bullying is normal. And there's nothing can be done about it. It is just the culture of the school. The students brutally bully each other. And the teachers don't do anything about it. Saint Frances Cabrini (I kept typing it St. Francis of Cabrini) is an active large San Jose Catholic school that also serves the Campbell, Los Gatos and Cambrian Park areas. They are scheduled for a new principal in the Fall of 2012. Current school size is 600 students. The school produce's a slick magazine called the Cabrini Courier. Cabrini has a good boy scouting program and numerous outreach programs that you don't have to attend the school to be involved with. After visiting SFC during a regular school day, my husband and I were 100% sure that we had found the best place for our daughter. While observing teachers in 3 different classes, we got a feel for how the adults treat the kids, parents, and one another. We instantly felt warm and welcomed to the community. Our PreK teachers Mrs. Piazza and Mrs. Atherton are wonderful. They engage the kids, understand their needs, and care a lot. They not only talk to the parents before and after every school day, but communicate through email on a regular basis answering every question. They teach children how to love and respect one another, how to share with great care (every child has sharing day once a week to bring favorite toy to school), and how to behave in a very kind way. Every day there are fun activities and projects that our little one loves. She also enjoys singing all the songs that she had learned at school. I also really admire the Principal Ms. Daigle and the Director of PreK Mrs. Ewell for caring about children and community in so many ways. One example, every morning before school (even during rain) they are waiting outside to greet every child by name. We had a horrible experience at SFC School! We enrolled our son in their pre-k program and was informed on the first day of school that this was not going to work out. On day four, we had a 1.5 hour long meeting with the principal, vice-principal, and his teacher. By the third week of school, we decided to pull our son out of the school. Moved our kids from public to private and I could not be happier. My kids love coming here, the environment is welcoming and the for the academics are solid. My 7th grader has been talking about high school for a few years and the school preps them for that! The kids want to enter good schools on their own. They have after school sports and although the school is small its so much better than the public school we came from for them. I love this Church they have a 24 hr Blessed Sacrament Adoration Chapel behind the church that you can access 24/7. And you are very close to the Blessed Sacrament because it's a very small chapel. You will feel at home and just want to spend hours praying. read more

I have been a neighbor of St, Francis Cabrini School for about forty years. From day one I have had to endure the arrogant actions of parents transporting their kids to and from school. The curb adjacent to my property and also at the crosswalk across Woodard road is painted red by the county, yet some of these people insist on parking in the red zone often blocking my drive way and access to my property. They act like they own the street. By breaking the law they are teaching their kids that it is ok for them to do so too. They often park across the crosswalk endangering kids trying to cross the street. In my opinion, the school has done little to correct this situation. I would rate the school at zero stars. read more

We were very disappointed with this school and pulled both of our children from this school. The administration is apathetic, not caring about staying cutting edge, using up to date teaching methods, protecting the children with secure facilities or promoting a culture where bullying and disruptive classroom behavior is not accepted. Many of the teachers are overworked and tired, not getting support from their admin and they complain openingly about this. The principal was under investigation and on leave for several weeks last year for problems in the middle school. Several children have been bullied yet they have no plans to change their policies. Classrooms do not have consistent discipline policies and this is a problem as they get older and in middle school especially. The middle school facilities are old and out of date, yet they can't change anything due to codes and zoning issues. They cut aids, PE teachers and coaches, yet tuition went way up. The preschool has had recent CPS issues. The masses are out of touch with modern families. The main office is not a welcoming place at all. It is not a secure campus the gates are low and the school is very open. Sadly it is a community of parent cliques which have grown more bold over the years. Once we switched to a different school a while ago we immediately noticed the difference in our kids and are seeing what a welcoming, supportive community focused on "whole child" education and positive discipline can be. Look elsewhere until some major changes in administration and philosopy come to this school. read more

Two of my children were acceptable to stay at the school and one of my children was not. We left the school and all of my children are thriving. My biggest regard thus far is having chosen to educate my children at St. Frances Cabrini for 18 years. I have 3 children and believed they were obtaining a good education. The truth is the education was ok. But definitely not worth the way the kids were poorly treated. Anyone who does not fit in the box is not welcome here unless the enrollment was low and they wanted the tuition. The kids were bullied, over worked and to this day dislike the place. Let me start by saying that if you're looking for a good Catholic school, you're not going to find a more Catholic school than SFC- you'll love it! If what you want is a good education for your child, keep looking. SFC has dramatically declined in the past 5 years while its size has exploded. What was once a small, welcoming, academically challenging, cutting edge community has grown into an overcrowded, out-dated race to become standard. In order to keep the cost of tuition down, so they say, the number of students per classroom has risen from about 20-25 to stuffing 36 kids into each classroom. If the class size isn't already maxed out, they're pushing to fill those last few spots rigorously. I've been told several times that this school is now the largest in the diocese, yet tuition still rose last year & no word on what will happen with it next year. Before the school reached their highest populations, tuition held steady for several years. Why exactly when it reaches its max would the tuition rise if what they claim is the more students you have, the easier it is to keep tuition costs down? When we started at SFC when our child was in pre-K, we chose the school because the teacher/student ratio made us feel comfortable that our child would be taught to the best of their ability. Now that we have a middle school student, I'm worried they won't be well enough prepared for high school. Each year academics seem to waiver & standards seem to keep lowering as class sizes grow. Students who have a tough time seem to get the attention they need to move onto the next topic, but students who are able to keep up don't have anything to move to as all 36 students MUST move at the same pace, leaving them bored out of their minds! If I wanted a California-based standard education, I would put my kid in a public school! We chose SFC because we thought we could get more from that education, however a better suited education can be found in a public school where at least they have some leveling & give kids the ability to work ahead if they can handle it. As I said at the beginning of my review, if all you want is a Catholic school education for the sake of the religious education, this school can't be beat! We however were looking for the best of both worlds & have been sorely disappointed. read more

When we toured St. Frances Cabrini, we were amazed at how all the students seemed so engaged...nobody looked bored, everyone was working hard and/or having fun. The technology they use (like having kids create magazine articles, videos, etc.), is above and beyond what I would expect. My son thrived in his pre-k class and LOVES his kindergarten teacher. My younger son will attend next year. Although this year, there were some issues, I still stand by the school and the parish. They are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of the students. The academic preparation is rock solid, the community is strong, and our children are happy. Highly disappointed in the administration, staff and environment at SFC. We have been at this school for 5 years now and it has gone downhill. They got rid of the discipline system and didn't replace it so the bullying, disruptive behavior and playground issues are so much higher. My friend works at a high school and said the past 4 years much of the behavioral issues and bullying are kids that came from from SFC, boys and girls. The principal's answer to everything is "kids will be kids". Not to mention she was out on leave last year for failing to properly report an issue with the middle school. Yikes! She has become increasingly apathetic and it is clear (because she has said it) that she is just waiting to retire. Her VP's are ineffective and not much better. Well for $10,000 a year our kids deserve better leadership. The school is run down, especially the middle school. It is a bunch of old trailers. It isn't very secure...you can hop a short fence to the grade school, walk straight into the gym or front office and easily bypass someone coming out a gate to get in. And the front office staff are often not there or super unfriendly and sarcastic. There just isn't a feel of good Catholic values and kindness coming from the people there. It isn't inspiring at all. The mass is very old school and not open to people of all kinds. The parents are very snobby and exclusive and many of the kids are too. You can tell who has money and gets their way at this school. Homework is a bunch of worksheets and the weekly work that comes home is stacks of worksheets. Very few creative assignments and not much that teaches to different learning styles. The teachers complain a lot in front of the kids and parents. We had a teacher ask us in conferences to take an issue to the admin because they weren't listening to teachers! It just isn't the school we started with. We will be moving as soon as we can find a new spot for our children. We knew several that left last year and wish we had gone with them. There is no one to check up on this school and how it is being run. The pastor and principal openly dispise each other. So who will hear parents concerns anymore and do something? Do yourself a favor and don't bother with this school. There are plenty of other great options in the area. Even public would be better. And cheaper! read more

We started several years ago loving this school. It was the underdog... small classes & academically strong. A few years ago the tide changed. Class sizes exploded & our daughter really seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Her personality was lost & she just wasn't herself. Academics seemed to be waning a bit with class size & diocesan mandates ultimately led us to look for another school. We found a school that fits our children better, but I still know plenty of families at SFC who are perfectly content. I think it's a solid Catholic school-- in fact, I don't think there's more Catholic of a Catholic school out there, so if that's what you're looking for, SFC is definitely the place to be. I just have a very hard time paying a large sum of money to send my kids into a class of 36 with little or no academic leveling. read more

We couldn't love this school more!! We moved two of our children here last year, one from our highly rated public school, and one from a prestigious independent private school. This year our twins started preschool here as well. We are so happy with our choice! The principal and administration is wonderful and know every student by name, our preschool teacher and aide are two of the kindest individuals on the planet, and all of our kids have grown academically and socially by leaps and bounds. The teacher/student ratio for Kindergarten last year was almost 4 times what it was at public kindergarten (1:7.5 vs 1:30). The academics are extremely strong, while at the same time incorporating faith based values. Overall, the kids that I have met are social, smart, kind and polite. The community is one of the biggest positives for us as well; it is extremely diverse and the people are so down to earth. There are zero pretentious people here. We love SFC! read more

My kids have been at SFC for the past 3 years and am thankful for our decision to send them there! Working in public education for 13 years, I am particular in the quality of staff and academics. SFC exceeds our expectations in all areas. The Principal, Vice Principals, Office Staff and Teachers truly care about this community and love their school. The Principal and Vice Principal are out in front of the school everyday greeting parents and kids (They know all kids names!) and helping with traffic. Many of the teachers on-staff are alumni or have kids attending the school as well....that says something! I believe SFC has the best mix of community of all the schools in the Diocese. The atmosphere is a good combination of academics, support and learning to be a good student/person! My only regret is that I wish we had started my children here earlier! The pre-school program and teachers are wonderful and is a great place to start your child if you are still exploring the idea. read more
