By that I mean that they've done things like switch my savings account over to a cheque account to save on fees, gave me credit card limit increases with no hassle, even given me cash advances (yes, but I asked very nicely). It is this kind of service which keeps me at Westpac. I trust these guys, which is sort of hard to say about your bank. Of the 'big four' banks in Australia (ANZ, Commonwealth, Westpac, NAB) Westpac is my pick based on good old fashioned service.

As soon as we entered the bank, we were greeted by someone and asking us what kind of service we needed so she can enter into her iPad. From there we just sit and wait. As we were sitting I noticed that there were several self service counters where you can: -view, update or open an account -transfer money or pay a bill -activate your card or change a pin There were several ATMs inside and outside of the bank. If you need to do any other transactions, then you can walk all the way to the end of the bank. Furthermore, if you need to sit down with someone to go over your account, you can too!

In fact they are the absolute opposite of all the things I usually associate with banks. For me the experience of banks had always been long queues, rude and unhelpful staff and fees, fees, fees. While HSBC Bondi Junction is always a relatively quiet branch, or at least it is every time I've gone in, the queues if there are any are one or two people maximum. The service is efficient and the staff are friendly, helpful and extremely polite. I opened an online savings account with them and I pay absolutely no fees. None, zero, zilch. No matter how many times I withdraw money from atms, or pay by etfpos there are no fees. HSBC is the opposite of everything I associate with banks and I love them for it.

When we showed up for our appointment we were told that the person assigned to us was transferred the week before to another branch. Since all cards and details were sent there, we had to go to his branch. At this point I could honestly say I was seriously doubtful that NAB and us would have a good working relationship. Fortunately, when we arrived, we were helped by friendly, knowledgeable staff. Thus, despite the small hiccup in the beginning, I feel confident NAB provides good customer care.

All the tellers are lovely, helpful, and don't seem in a hurry to get to the next customer (no matter how long the lines are), like the other banks tellers do. That's some good employee training. That, and they have good, flexible options for storing my money, and generous interest rates for the savings accounts. As well, don't you just love their advertising campaign? Breaking up with the other banks? Genius.
