As a mother of a second grader at St. John Vianney I am incredibly pleased with the school, especially with the principal (Ms. Suty) and pastor (Father Joe) that recently came on board. Their spirited, hands-on leadership is inspiring and engaging. They are open, welcoming and easy to get in touch with. It was okay and all 'til that one assembly last school year where the principal and priest talked about "Jesus coming over everyone, Jesus come all over our staff, Jesus come all over our students," and that of the sort. As a parent, who would like to say anonymous, was watching this unravel, I noticed that many of the older kids (5th-8th) were either laughing or holding in their laugh with no in-between. At that moment, I realized the implications that could be made with those sayings and noticed just how immature the average middle schooler is there. They are supposed to be the mature ones; role models for the younger kiddos. I took my youngest out of that school at the end of the school year, and I never want him to experience the 'St. John Vianney Come All Over Us' fiasco again. I went to this school and looking back I would not recommend this place to any parent looking to place their kid in a "religious school". Drive farther if needed, but avoid at all costs. Currently I am hearing problems that the parents want to remove the current principal because he has no experience working in religious school. The vice-p has no experience as a vp and it shows. How can a school work smoothly if several parents are trying to undermine the core people of the school? And I do agree with the parents in this case. Experience is needed to deal with private school kids. When i was in school there, the curriculum was garbage. Just hot garbage. Compared to other similar Catholic schools in the area, we would get a dinky participation sticker. English was pretty weak. We were not really explain how to do anything, just told how to do it. Math was very similar. Social studies/history was just reading straight out of the book. My cousins in public school would talk about all the cool extra things they would learn,but reading straight out of the book is ok too i guess. Science was pretty good. The science teachers would actually explain to the kids, or at least try, why thing would happen. We had a music program that only lasted to a certain grade then it got replaced with a useless religion class and english class. Hell, other comparable private elementary schools had a language program to prepare for high school. A lot of teachers taught straight from the over head, which the majority of the time was pretty much verbatim from the textbook . I get it was a religious school, but it look like they knew the curriculum was weak so they focused a lot on the religion classes, because they didnt know what else to do. Slow day? Lets all go to the church and do some coloring! Oh boy, putting my parents hard earn money to use on the tuition. The only good thing I got from those religion classes was to use it to show people how shitty the religion is via internet arguments. "you think gays are bad because the bible says so? I guess you dont wear polyester because the bibles says so! and sell your daughter into slavery if she mouths off to you." Lets talk about the bullying problem at the school. The previous VP, Ms. Woods, would tell the parents and the kids, because I "complained" to her a few times, to have the kids deal with it between themselves. Yes, tiny old me could have dealt with a bully through nice words, love, and friendship. Nope, I just got bullied more until they moved onto another person. 5th grade teach Ms. Brady, may she rot in hell, would put down the students any opportunity she had, especially the male students. She did a lot of bad things. A lot of parents complained, but the old bat remained. Awful curly hair, dead eyes, and painful personality. My family has been at SJV since 2013 when my oldest started Kinder. The school has gone through many changes over the past few years, but the new VP and Principal (both teachers previously at SJV) are an amazing duo and are committed to taking the school forward in all aspects. From hosting Coffee with the Principal (to provide an open forum to discuss concerns and updates), to welcoming families into the school yard each morning -- they're both friendly, approachable, and action-oriented. In my opinion, these great traits are a reflection of the community, as a whole: *The office staff are always smiling and approachable and the teachers care for the children as if they were their own; the school staff gives regular feedback to the parents and ensures the children's safety, well-being, and emotional & intellectual growth during the school day. *The school plans many events and traditions to bring the community together: There are large fundraisers like a golf tournament, pancake breakfast, and crab feed and smaller ones, too, like movie nights, Dia de los Muertos altars & processions, Easter egg hunts, and Catholic blessing ceremonies (blessing school books, pets, etc). These events provide opportunities for families to come together both inside and outside of the regular school day to build relationships and to get to know each other. *Lastly, the families are a huge piece of what makes the school amazing! They're all very welcoming and regularly participate with volunteer activities. Although there is a requirement for this, many families go above and beyond just to be part of their children's school life (serving hot lunch, helping in the classrooms, driving for fieldtrips, planning events, etc) - which is much different than many other private and public schools in our area! If you are looking for a school where you just drop off your student and go, SJV *might* work for you, but... If you're looking for a school that feels like a second home for your child... where you can know the families and staff (and they know you!), where you child can feel safe and happy while learning and growing a ton, then I encourage you to pop by Saint John Vianney for a visit to see that it would be the *perfect place* for your child's education (both academic and religious). read more

St John Vianney Catholic School has been an Eastside institution of excellence. 540 students in K-8th. Tuition is $6k ($400 discount for Parish families). This is a well run school with an active alumni and parent community. The school has a good mix of wealthy and moderate income families. Reading the newsletters off their website will give you a good feel for the school. A new gym is being built that will accomodate school events and basketball games. read more

SJV is a wonderful school community with nurturing and caring teachers and administrators. My oldest graduated from SJV recently and my two youngest children are currently enrolled. The teachers at SJV really prepares your child for the rigorous academics of high school. The parents are supportive and friendly and the school offers many volunteering opportunities for the families to connect and get to know one another, especially if you are new to the school. We are lucky to have a close relationship with the SJV Parish, too. I highly recommend everyone to check out this gem in the East Foothills of San Jose, which has it's own small town feel within a metropolitan city. read more

I hardly ever write a review, but this really bugged me to a point where I had to write it. We recently enrolled our children to attend St. John during the Fall. We went to all the testings and mandatory meeting. We paid the registration fee of $500 per child, so $1,000 total for two children in hopes of attending a great school. We applied for financial aid and other scholarships (the BASIC FUND program) that were provided by the school. The school did mention that the registration fee was a non-refundable fee, but with the thinking that it would go towards your children's education, there was no hesitancy. However, when we received the granted amount, it was $400 per child, so $800 total for two children. Since our home parish was a different parish, there was a out of parish fee of $800. The grant went towards the "out of parish fee," leaving the tuition as is without any financial help. While I did apply for "The BASIC FUND program," nothing was mentioned in the tuition agreement, except the $800 grant. When I reached out to the school, they finally came back with a principal scholarship of $4,000, the $800 in grants and the Basic Fund program of $1,600 per child. We just didn't feel that the school was out to really help those in need. The school needs to be up front about how much a family will usually be granted, so the family knows up front if they can afford tuition or not instead of being blind sighted by the word financial assistant. One of the school associate even emailed me and said "normally" each child gets $400 IF APPROVED for financial aid. If I have gotten this information sooner, I would know right off the bat if we can afford tuition or not. When we applied for The Basic Fund Program, we were not told whether or not we were approved until I emailed and one of the school staff called me back to let me know yes it was approved, then why wasn't it on the agreement form to begin with? After all of this back and fourth, we just decided that our children will not be attending St. John Vianney. While we did ask them to make an exception to refund out $1,000 HARD EARNED money since our children will not be attending there, they simply say policy is policy. I just feel that Catholic Schools should be more understanding and helpful instead of trying to take people's hard earned money because of the "ACCEPTING PROCESS." Therefore, be aware that if you are applying for the financial aid here, it is "NORMALLY" $400 per child IF APPROVED, the school grant varies, and if you qualify for the BASIC FUND program then it's normally a given amount, but make sure you follow up on it. In the end, we have to bite the bullet of losing $1,000 over the school's admission process. I'm quite sure there are probably other families out there that has lost their registration money on the school's admission process. We moved away to a Southern State for two years, they also have the same program for financial aid for schools. However, sadly to say that the Southern states admission process is a lot better and more trustworthy. They do not take your registration money until you agree with the terms and tuition agreement. They don't take any money from you until everything is finalized and they really help you when they say financial assistance for students when it's a big school with 3 classes per each grade level. Coming back to California and experiencing such a bad Catholic school process with St. John Vianney. Southern States really think about the parents and are more understanding, every grade gets out at the same time so its easier for the parents to pick up their children if they have more than one. At St. John Vianney School, Kindergartens get out at 2pm while all of the other grades get out at 3pm. There is a one hour difference, if you don't want to bother with having to come back within the next hour to pick up your other child, you would have to send your kinders to extended care for an extra fee of course. It's just making any way possible to make money I feel. read more

My grandson attends Saint John and I can say the school is very clean and organized. I pick up my grandson at the school 3-4 times a week along with other grand parents, I feel very comfortable with the community and I am glad to see my grandson thrive at this school , he is always very excited to see friends and he really likes his teacher. My child was very unhappy at this school. Her teacher was not good with kids. She is unapproachable and so is the assistant. The teacher is an disciplinarian which resulted to my child also developing anxiety. My child had a horrible year and it is suppose to be fun and exciting. We did all of our volunteering hours and they would not accept it and when asked, they had no reason. They are money hungry. They do not listen to the parents concern. This school is a close tight net group of people that value the education of their students . I have attended events the school has put together and you can see the pride the school takes in parent and student connections. All are welcome , students travel from all areas of San Jose to attend this school in East San Jose. SJV is a good school with polite students, dedicated staff, basic education (nothing spectacular) , strong sense of community, super clean. All about money though. Between volunteer hours, morning and after school care, (which are great programs), fundraising, eScrips, and Family ID envelope donations in church, they really squeeze you financially. If you can spare about 10,000 a year, when all is said and done, then go for it. With 2 kids or more there is a bit of a break, but that doesn't include morning or after school care which can add up and be pricy. Saint John Vianney is now more than San Jose State University (even more when you consider that the SJSU student tuition estimates include a thousand a year on books and supplies). Google it. Sad we had to leave. Losing lots of good families, so costs continue to rise to make up the difference. They will continue to squeeze money and time out of parents and families that are left.
