I'm writing this review because of extended care. I put a 1 star because the people who run extended care are very rude to the middle schooler especially the first grade teacher. I'm saying this because I can't even kick a soccer ball inside and I can't even go outside the play area because of the first grade teacher. This is very bad for the middle schooler because of the lack of freedom they get. Ms. Lucy is one of the nicest people at daycare but when the first grade teacher come the whole mood turns upside down. Please tell the first grade teacher to give the middle schooler enough freedom like the little kids. Thank you. read more

Mr Jed should be back in this school. The kindergarten teacher so called new vice principal is not very welcoming. She don't even qualify to be vice principal cause of her attitude, she must just stay being kindergarten teacher and be focused more on just being kindergarten teacher, toddlers love her better than her being vice principal. We have been established with St Patrick since 2015. My son has had a pleasant expiereience thus far at St. Pats. We were blessed with the most awesome TK/Kinder teacher Ms. Lupe she has created the best experience for my shy lil guy. She is honest, kind, and works so hard to ensure each child has the best learning experience. My child has truly blossomed and I owe a lot of that to the wonderful teachers and staff. The extended care and teacher's aide staff are the most kind hearted people you will ever meet!!! As a volunteer and very involved parent my only gripe is the lack of parent participation. The school constantly has to beg for parents to be involved. On many occasions my child was held back from field trips due to lack of parent volunteers. I am a single parent who works full time during school hours, with no additional help, and I exceed my commitment with volunteer opportunities and involvement in any way I can toward the school. The school has all the tools it needs to be grand it's the parents who are not helping the school grow where it needs to. Most of the staff has been there since my niece attended in the 90s and majority of the staff is excellent. But they are advertising St. Pats at churches like Guadalupe or in East SJ that are not native to downtown so I'm thinking that's where the disconnect lies with the parents since it's not their neighborhood. I live in this Community and I want to see it grow and get better so I over extend myself at the school. I recommend you give Saint Pats a try you might fall in love with the wonderful teachers and staff. They really are genuine, quality people and that's very important. The blended learning program the school offers is also very good my child does very well, and I know the curriculum def exceeds our local schools standards. They really do mean well. 15 years ago, I started my first day here at St. Patrick's. I was one of three children of a single working mother who didn't have the funds to send us to a great school but also didn't want us to have a shoddy education through the San Jose public school experience. This school was pretty much perfect for her - you could work off the tuition as a parent by working hours with the school and my siblings and I were able to have a relatively low teacher-student ratio which is pretty much impossible in public schools. The best thing about this school, for parents, is that they become a part of the school experience for the kids. My experience here was definitely unique. My fondest memory of this school was actually before I started school at St. Patrick's. I was just dropping in for a day in first grade to see if I would want to switch to this school the next academic year and that was one of the best experiences of my life. I made so many friends that day and when I left to go home, I remember those other first graders that one day just telling me, "I can't wait to see you next year!" Needless to say, I went home to tell my mom, "I want to go to St. Patrick's!" Maybe my nostalgia is fogging my memory a bit, but I had a pretty fun experience with this school. I won't lie and say I had the best or the worst teachers. I didn't have a perfect education, but who does? My mother in law recommended me this school. I thought I would not be able to afford to have my daughter attend Saint Patrick School but I was so happy to learn that they have financial aid for parents with low income. This is the 2nd year for my daughter who's now in the 1st grade. The teachers are very experienced and cares for each students. I love the way they interact with them in the class. I am so bless that I had enrollment my two children go to Saint Patrick School. I like this school so much with three reason. Firstly, All the staffs and teachers responsible, caring, and disciple the children. Secondly, each classroom has very small size for instance second grader has around 20-24 students. That why, every family know each others. Parents also know another parents. We also did community services for schooling by helping in Art Class, Field Trips need parents driving etc....Lastly, The school helps those family can not afford to pay for tuition. The school offered us with financial Aid for instance , Basic Fund, FAST, Daughter of Charity. I went to this school from kinder to eighth and let me tell you, never have I been in a more toxic environment. Ms Olga, the principal, now the middle school ELA and 8th grade Science teacher, is the most vile person ever. This isn't to throw shade or be mean I'm stating a fact that every generation of kids that she taught, thought this. Almost every memory I have had at this school was negative all because of, you guessed it, Olga Islas. In my first few years of attending this school I never really minded her because she treats the kids in the lower grades with basic respect, where as in middle school, kids are seen as troublemakers and delinquents even if they are good kids. Also because it was her first few years being principal as well. Anyways, she's a woman who is very hypocritical and this is being said by a student who has very recently attended this school, not a student from 2012. That being said, she hasn't changed. She is very hypocritical. You may be asking how she is hypocritical. Well, she always blames everything on the 8th graders and always indicates that they put inappropriate ideas into the younger kid's minds when the younger kids are sneakier and more rebellious than the 8th graders. It is not fair that the 8th graders are 'role models' to the kids because they do not want to be role models in the first place. She always calls out 8th graders who have unnoticeable dyed hair and yells at them while 5th graders can have streaky unkept green hair with no consequence that I knew of. She also has called multiple kids in my class stupid or indicated it and has told one boy that "if I were your mom I would be very disappointed." In addition, whenever she taught us outside of religion, she would always bring up religion and tell us her perspective on controversial issues like abortion. Of course, she always had a closed mindset and did not like when students would oppose her pro-life views. Instead of listening to the other side, like she says we should, she shuts them out and automatically says they are incorrect. She says that it is because the church opposes abortion and I get that, but not everything is about religion and not everyone is going to have the same views on everything. So, this usually ends up into fights between a teacher and multiple students. It is very inappropriate and most students find the whole issue ridiculous. I would write more about my experiences with Ms. Olga and her ridiculously contradictory dress code but I'll spare you from that long rant. Moreover, the other teachers are probably not any better than ms Olga. They are pretty much the younger brainwashed naive versions of Ms. Olga, with an exception of Mr.Navarro, with their opinions and little comments. And those are just the middle school teachers. The elementary teachers are eh. They usually come and go because Ms. Olga cannot pay them enough to stay. Since they left, most of them never taught me and talked to me but from the times they have talked to me or my classmates they seemed ignorant and like high school means girls. I always see them whispering and having their little cliques and it always seems that they are trying to be intimidating. I get that they are young and in their early to mid 20's but come on. Furthermore, there is a HUGE sanitary issue at St. Patrick's. The Girl's bathroom has been blown up a lot this year. The big stall has been shut down twice for a broken handle and diarrhea and was left there for a week to harden and another stall has shut down for having poop stains on the seat of the toilet. ANOTHER TIME LITERAL CACA CAME UP INTO ALL THE SINKS AND WE COULD NOT WASH OUR HANDS FOR A FEW HOURS. After that, only 1/3 sinks worked for weeks until my friends complained and they finally did something. I know this is nasty and probably sounds like propaganda to not put your kids here but this actually happened. Also, in the boy's bathroom there has been a lot of pee problems and it always floods. The problem was so extreme that they shut down the boy's bathroom for half a day. It is very messy in there and the boys do not take care of it. I know that is a student issue but I would not want my child to be a part of that. Also, the water fountains are very nasty and water tastes like chlorine but do not ever mention that to Mr. Jed because he gets very butthurt. Same with the food. The beans look like horse caca. They claim this is 'healthy' government food but I know a lot of people who have thrown up after eating it or had stomach problems. Overall, I would not recommend you putting your child here and that is coming from a kid that went for almost 10 years. I had fun with the kids that came and went and having new teachers entering over the years but it was not the best. Unless you want to have a happy go-lucky child turn into a miserable teenager who feels caged in their school environment, DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE. read more

This will be our 3rd year attending St. Patrick School and we couldn't be happier. The teachers and the principal have been wonderful, we especially love Ms. Lupe, the kindergarten teacher. My kids receive individualized instruction in their classrooms according to each of their needs. The onsite aftercare program is a very convenient. It is secure and the staff is fabulous. They provide personalized homework assistance to the students that need it along with science, art projects and games. What started out as a search for a more convenient location to my work with aftercare has turned out to be a blessing. From my 8 years at St. Patrick School, I have noticed just how great the school is at preparing students for high school and beyond. First of all, the teachers are prepared with lesson plans so that the students are always learning. Teachers also use the station-rotation model where some students meet with teachers and some work independently. After some time, students switch 'stations' and some are now working with the teacher and the others are working independently. This helps create small teacher-student groups that give students a chance to ask/answer questions. Another way St. Patrick School helps prepare students for higher education is through transitioning classrooms. Some teachers specialize in different subjects, so similar to high school, for example, students will transition to another classroom for that subject. Most students, after graduation, end up attending a Catholic High School. To prepare for this, teachers help students practice for the HSPT (High School Placement Test) and how to write great essays for admission. I can say this from experience because I am student at Bellarmine College Preparatory. All in all, St. Patrick School is amazing at preparing students for their later education. read more

As a mother of four kids who have attended St. Patrick from kindergarten, two have graduated and the third will graduate this year and like her siblings will continue their education at St Francis High School. I recommend that you consider St. Patrick's school as an option for the education of your children since in my experience, the education they have received has been excellent and not only academic but also spiritual and especially in these difficult times that we are living with the lockdown and closing of schools. I am so thankful that St. Patrick's students have been able to continue their online education and continue their almost regular learning schedule and talk every day with their teachers and classmates and we as parents can work together with teachers and with the principal, who always make sure students are making the most of their online education and contact us if necessary. this school is in a not-great neighborhood in downtown SJ. my friends who went here called it st. raunchy. most of the students are minorities, especially Vietnamese and Mexican, many are members of the attached church. Compared to the local schools, which have lots of english learners, this is definitely a step up, yet it is still sub-par to the majority of catholic schools in the area. they do have a lawn, which is a big plus, but its pretty tiny and located along busy santa clara street. as stephen mentioned, the class sizes are small. If you are trying to get your kids transferred into a catholic school, for example for middle school, this is a good bet, since many of the other schools have a waiting list. Loaves and Fishes, a charity soup kitchen, operates out of the school, serving meals several evenings a week. this is a great operation, but maybe a tad dubious, because it means that there are a lot of homeless people hanging around, waiting to get dinner. read more

I am a mother of 2 children who currently attend St. Patrick School. My children have only been enrolled at St. Patrick for a few months and I am extremely satisfied with the positive impact the school has had on my children. The school lives up to its mission statement to focus and provide a "strong academic, spiritual and moral foundation in a safe and nurturing environment..." In addition, and equally as important to me, is the school's mission to "...celebrate its diversity." And that it does. St. Patrick School has already begun to nurture my children's academic progress. The principal, Ms. Olga, recently mandated my daughter to tutoring which is offered at the school (the choice was also offered to obtain my own tutoring for my daughter). My daughter came home relieved and ecstatic about tutoring. She explained to me that "tutoring is fun and they help me so much! Mom, I want to go to tutoring everyday." This has helped me as well as my daughter's homework is complete when we get home. Every experience will be different - as different as every child. However, St. Patrick unites all the experiences via its celebration of diversity and continued respect for the reality of our changing communities. The school ensures an awareness within your child that you just cannot find in a public education. This, I believe, will offer a more profound foundation for my children in a complex ever-changing world. The education here is worth it on multiple levels. My 2 kids have been going to St Patrick School for 3 years now. The level of education was far superior to that of a nearby public school where my older son attended for the first year. Their level of 'blended learning' incorporating traditional teaching methods, use of iPads and media, and group learning is what attracted me to this school module. The teachers, faculty and after school care program are great! There is a real sense of community with the school. The Middle school students are respectful, and there seems to be a level of decorum which i appreciate. The school can improve on fundraising events... They seem to have the same events year after year and they are not inspiring or fun. I also wish there was more of a focus on art, sports and activities. But overall, a good experience for my kids and myself. My kids are flourishing here and they won't be moving to another school any time soon! read more

Ok one last update before I leave. The school has gotten worse since I last reviewed, which was during February-March. The teachers are now piling on homework on all the students instead of giving the same amount every day consistently. I'm now sad because I used to think that this was a good school. It isn't. And it never was. I have now pulled my child out of this school, and have sent emails and letters to the higher administration to change the principal and many of the teachers. Oh and speaking of teachers, Mrs. Alegre is now leaving, meaning you guys lost the only good teacher in the school besides Mrs. Richard, who will be leaving for a while because of maternity leave. They are terrible neighbors! They are so loud even outside of school times. Processions with loudspeakers at sundown, announcements loud enough to wake my baby from his nap, overly loud music... I understand schools and kids have noise, but it's so bad we have no peace in our home. And their festivals screw up parking in the neighborhood for blocks with people who can't drive parking illegally and taking over for 4 or more blocks in all directions. This school is amazing. My stepson graduated from here & now attends Mitty. All the staff are awesome especially the 4th grade teacher. They go above & beyond to make sure all students succeed. They prepare the students for high standards. The scores of students are awesome & majority go on to attend private high schools. I recommend for parents to visit this school & keep it as an option for your students to attend. I have never seen a staff that cares so much. The tuition is very resonable & tuition assistance is availabe to those whom need it. The values of religion & mass also help students at a young age to follow the faith & word of God. Please do not send your children to St. Patrick's in San Jose. I have never been so disappointed with a school in my life. My children were verbally abused and treated with complete disrespect. A year ago they replaced the Principal, she is horrible. She is mean spirited and shouldn't be near children at all. The parents have tried to contact the Diocese and report her, but they refuse to replace her. She grabs children by their clothes, pulls down on their skirts, screams at them. She is a horrible teacher and principal. Please if you love your children do not send them to St Patrick's. We have been at this school for years and am so sorry to see it go down hill so fast. My daughter and nephew attended this school from K thru 8th grade. I had the same concerns about Loaves and Fishes and the homeless hanging around but in all those years not even a hint of anything bad every happened. My granddaughter started K last year at this same school and my daughter and I couldn't be happier. The teacher is amazing and it seems like all the children loved her. I really like the fact that the school is run by nuns. They present as very professional and focus is on learning.They offer extra-curricular activities and don't waste time and money on frivilous holidays. They have a daily prayer and learn about Catholicism but religion is not pushed on them. Mary M read more
