My work recently gave us a budget to indulge in a hobby in, and knowing my brother had a birthday coming up, immediately said "BEDAZZLER" Who knew that bedazzlers do not affix to thermoses on their own? Who knew that you need 'Rhinestone Glue' to get them to affix? That said, off I went to Michael's where after some searching to find it (it's tucked past where the Toys r Us used be in Jantzen Beach) I was richly rewarded. The people there are incredibly nice, the selection is HUGE, and the person I spoked to in the glue section taught me more about glue than I ever knew was possible. As a bonus, I also picked up a new exercise stick while I was the for like 5 bucks! (4 ft dowel 3/4 inch). I would have not known - as I am not a thief, I am not thinking of that. I decided my bladder would not handle the shopping so I grabbed a basket so I could start shopping after since i needed glue which was right there at the back wall. Restroom clearly marked so off I went. Big signs with the 'restroom for customer only' and to find an associate to let you in... and the walk made the urgency a bit more but thankfully I could hear someone working in the framing area right there so I did the hello and can I trouble you for the code. Urgency growing as she fumbled the code over and over. Places apparently don't give the secret code out now and have to supervise you using the bathroom since, apparently, people memorize the code and give it out. THIS is where we are folks. Thankfully shopping was much easier than it was to use to restroom and I managed not to have an adult accident. The cashier was friendly and they had the super goopy glue I needed to get - they have a GLUE AISLE... so if you need to stick a thing to another thing, they got you. I managed to sneak past the Halloween stuff and BELIEVE ME, that's rough...I want it all! Then I went to the parking lot and was like WHOA What in the Actual F... because, you know that blinking blue like solar panel things you see in every parking lot now? IT SPOKE TO ME.... BELOWING at me ...VERY LOUD in an empty parking lot something about being a Micheal's customer and that they WERE FILMING ME... Ummm... WHAT??? I got in my car, after taking a picture - you got me and I got you creeper!! That was just waaaaaaay Xtra... It was 930am on a freaking Tuesday and I was the only customer - oh wait, I saw a husband and wife getting a game for their toddler.... I felt like maybe I missed the prison riot. So, I appreciate stores protecting themselves but the message I got is that I am lucky I missed getting stabbed by the unhinged people who also shoplift there while buying glue. Maybe order glue online next time.

I love supporting local and wanted to take my teen for a pottery painting experience. The mugs we…read morewanted were all dirty, but we were assured the markings would burn off. At $40 it's a pricey mug! I understand it's not just the mug, but the paint, rent, kiln, staff expenses. But it meant we'd only be painting one item at that price. So we chatted happily while my teen painted the mug and I asked to color in a tiny heart on the side to fulfill my art craving. That tiny heart, using no additional supplies or brushes, cost me an additional $10. We used 2 colors, 2 brushes and required no guidance, but the final cost of the one mug, plus 2 studio fees (because I painted a tiny heart), without drinks, landed up being over $65! That's a little OTT, but it was a great memory with my teen. I hope the dirt on the mug actually does burn off- because at $65, I'd hope to have an unblemished lifelong memento.

And we came upon Two Rivers/Weird Sisters, a combined small, independent book store-slash-yarn and knit shop. We loved this store. The ladies who work here clearly not only know their stuff but they are passionate about their books and knitting. I overheard them talking books with customers, and it was so clear that they love reading and know what to recommend. It was also obvious that this book and knit store has a loyal customer base, as it seemed that all the folks who were there when we visited were regulars. The ladies who work here knew the customers - and their kids - by name. (This felt like the "Cheers" of book and knit shops lol!). They host book club meeting here and also "bitch and stitch" knitting groups. Heck, the name alone of the clubs makes me want to learn to knit! At the time of our visit, they were doing some sort of book promo where you get a bag of chips with certain book purchases. (This may be a YA promo, I'm not sure). But they had a lot of "Potato Chip Books" on display, and it was super cute and super clever. (There were some teen girls there with their moms at the time, and they were all really into this "potato chip" book thing). There's a section devoted to Portland gifts and local, gourmet fare. I got a locally made Bloody Mary mix that looks amazing, and the lady who works here told me the backstory, how she knows the family who makes this mix, and it was so interesting, hearing about the personal connection they have here to the various products they carry. Super store, with a variety of local goods (in addition to books and yarns). Love this place!
