The nurses are compassionate, the doctors are very good, the rooms and colors are calming and pretty. I would normally get into details of helpful the nurses and doctors were but our stay was made so terrible that unfortunately I have to focus on that instead... If you are hoping for either good therapy, and/or transferring to a rehab hospital after this hospital, be careful and ask not to get the elder Brian as your physical therapist. We were hoping to strengthen and then transfer my husband, Ed, from St Johns to Cottage Rehab in Santa Barbara once he got over his pneumonia, so that he could make major headway in his stroke. To do that, Ed needed to show he could sit in a chair for hours and handle 1 and a half hours a day of therapy. The doctors were on board. I brought Ed's power chair to the hospital. Brian saw my husband twice in the 2 weeks. He refused to let my husband sit in his chair. Despite doctors ok, he didn't let me bring the chair into the room. He spent 10-15 seconds holding my husband up on the side of the bed- no warm up, no other therapy. He asked if my husband was tired, my husband shook his head no, and Brian said, that He, Brian was tired so he was ending the therapy. He then wrote that my husband is fit for nothing. We were consequently turned down by Cottage Rehab. I asked our nurse for his boss so as to get a 2nd assessment and Brian met me in the hall instead. I asked him why he would spend so little time with a patient, not use the bolsters or chair I had offered, not try any other type of exercise, not give any warm-ups after a patient was in bed with pneumonia for over a week, and then could come to such a damaging conclusion based on 2 identical sessions of less than a minute. He said he was entitled to whatever assessment he wanted. Later he told case management that based on working with Ed that day too, Ed was not worth any therapy, even at St Johns. Since nurses had seen he never saw Ed at all that day, it was suggested I bring this up to a manager. Our Dr had a kind heart and contacted physical therapy to tell them to send out someone for a 2nd assessment. A nurse suggested we appeal Ed's discharge to gain the extra few days needed. Physical therapy was too busy to see Ed right up until the time of Ed's discharge a day and a half later. I can only say that if you care at all about physical therapy for your loved one, stay completely away from Brian. He put no effort, caring, or time into his therapy, and lied to cover himself. My husband came home, the EMT put him from the hospital stretcher right into his chair and my husband began home therapy immediately. Clearly Brian was wrong, which is OK, but he had refused to even allow my husband the chance to sit in a chair and do therapy- that is not OK. I understand that Brian has longevity but he is not in the zone, if he ever was. He is cold, uncaring, and intentionally hurtful. All to a couple who did nothing but be polite and try to please him. He single handedly had total power of my husband's therapy at the St John's hospital, and of going from there to rehab, which could have given Ed huge headway in healing from his stroke -and he abused that power. Way too much power was given to one slightly unbalanced therapist. read more

However - when the psych male head nurse practitioner came with his intern to conduct an evaluation of my dad- it went like this: Do you know your name? Do you know where you are? Do you know the year? Do you want to kill yourself? My dad got the first three questions right and responded "no" to the last. The psych guy looked at me and said - we are good here- I'll let the doctor know he's cleared. What?!?!?! Your lack of professionalism is not only shocking - it is dangerous. We trusted you. Checking in for Knee surgery was so simple. The receptionist was so nice and helpful. The care i got after surgery was fantastic, they informed me of exercises to use at home before I go to physical therapy. The Therapist took his time with me, and gave me some paperwork just in case I forget. They made sure I had someone to drive me home afterwards. They gave the same instructions to care for me once I got home. Today the nurse from the hospital called to check on me. I have had the worst experience in my life here. The service that we don't give shit attitude is unbelievably. From RN to Dr this was a horrible experience. Please go somewhere else my biggest mistake was coming here because I live in Camarillo but I was told by several people stay cleared from this hospital. They were right. I came in at 10am for a stomach issue they had me do a CT MRI etc.. test which I believe was excessive but we did them and finished them all around by 3pm. We were done with all the test just to tell me I had to have surgery in St John's Oxnard and I needed a transfer through an ambulance. It is 12:55am and I'm still here waiting in the ER hallway bed which I have been now for 15hrs waiting What a joke stay cleared from this place read more

I was delivered to the St John E.R. by ambulance and EMTs on July 17th after falling onto the concrete. Everyone at the ER was kind as could be and it wasn't a particularly busy night. I was told I could leave after the doctor read the X-rays (he said we didn't need to wait for the radiologist). He sent me home with a splint on my left wrist. The following Monday I followed up with my own doctor who called St John's and requested my X-rays. By this time a radiologist at St John's has evaluated the films and noted a substantial break on the left wrist and a small break on the right. My primary immediately sent me to an orthopedic hand specialist who ordered more X-rays and a CT scan. I was the casted, "pancaked" in the ortho office, the most painful procedure I have ever experienced. The note is that if the ER doctor had waited for the radiologist to read the X-rays, I would have been set and casted in the hospital WITH PAIN MEDICATION. I am beyond upset...I am furious. read more

I've had to come here multiple times over 6 months. Each time has been relatively smooth, lots of waiting depending on the day but the staff has always been pretty kind and attentive. I appreciate the volunteers who come around to help those who are in the waiting room by just talking or in one case, playing soothing music. I've been able to get help for multiple utis and for a bout of dehydration I had. The nurses have always been very supportive. read more

I went in for multiple seizures. I was released from the hospital and then had a seizure while I was at home after being released while I was then again in the hospital no blood test were done. Nothing was done. They kicked me out of the hospital. While I was seizing, I had to remove my own IV. I had a nurse standing around me, saying I did not have a seizure. I ended up going to CMH in Ventura, where as soon as they had all my info, they tested me immediately and figured out my medication was messed up. I was actually helped and in Camarillo I was not. Due to the fact that the ambulance will not take me to Ventura. I get stuck with Camarillo. This hospital should not be open. I said it in the past that I would only go there if I was dead and I basically was imagine having a bunch of nurses around you saying that you do not have a broken arm yeah your arm is busted sticking out of your skin. That's basically what it is when it comes down to the epilepsy and having a seizure there are over 100 different types of seizures. They are not even trained in one this hospital staff is the worst in the world. No one should go there. No one's worse enemy. No one's dog close the hospital down. read more

WATCH YOUR BILLS!!!! Dignity offered me a discount if I paid my bill in full, which I did. Then they started sending me bills trying to collect the same amount as the discount. I had to keep calling to request an itemized statement and they would put my account "on hold." Their business practices are obviously shady. I wasn't blown away with the healthcare either. The medical portion of my experience wasn't that bad but they wanted to send my elderly mother-in-law home the morning after a double mastectomy. Luckily we said no because she had complications and needed to be there (or somewhere better). I only went there because I was bleeding and had no choice. We recently had a visit to St John's in Camarillo for my elderly parent with complications related to an ongoing illness. We have mixed reviews. Our time in the ER was top notch but I can't help but rate the whole experience based on the weakest part of our stay. We had the rudest and most condescending physical therapist that made my parent embarrassed about their inability to do what was asked. I was mortified watching. I do not recommend this hospital. First off they only have handicap parking near the entrance for X-rays and scans. Had to park across the street and be wheeled across the street in a wheelchairwith no crosswalk. Also that parking lot has cobblestones everywhere which make the wheelchair hard to move and makes it bounce around when you are already in pain. Second they sent me to collections unwarranted. I had to sit down with their billing person for 30 min while in pain and they told me the total I owed which I paid upfront and got all my info. Two years later I was reported to collections for a small amount owed which I was never told or contacted. Come to find out they game me the wrong amount due at the time and never updated my information! They had an address that was over 10 years out of date. read more

My ER of choice. Every time I'm feeling ill and home remedies are not working, I go here. Time frame is average and what is typically expected for ERs. After my information was verified, they gave me my informational wrist band and told to wait. Once seen, we covered all my symptoms and took test to help verify or rule out any illness. They gave me a treatment plan and prescribed me medication. Overall, good experience. read more

They had us wait from 8:30am to 4:30pm to pick up our grandfather despite his pick up window being 8:30-9:00am. The nurse even acknowledged that the doctor was taking forever and there's nothing she could do about it. They take their time here in the ER waiting room and in their general hospital. read more

ER experience is hit or miss. Diana, a PRN RN, was attentive, caring, and a strong advocate for my recent admission. Was in the ER the day before and had to call the nurses station via phone to get help since my button and verbal requests for help were unmet. Am currently inpatient. The radiology employees were complaining that they were short staffed and the per diems along with rapid hires were not adequately trained to be of support. Then a nurses aid made the comment, " our focus is on care, not comfort"(can't make this stuff up!) Additionally, I heard another medical assistant who was a recent hire complain she didn't feel adequately trained and her position was often understaffed. Pros: * Get your own spacious room. * Well intentioned staff (though very busy) * Deandre, RN from third floor was FABULOUS! * I was fortunate to have great MD's (Dr Barker, and Infectious Disease MD were amazing!). * Meals better than average. Substitutions can be called in. * Team did well with discharge planning as I needed home health. If you admit on weekends and need discharge planning, they may have difficulty coordinating care. Con's: * Staffing shortages lead to higher risk of mistakes, less attentive care, and lower overall standard of treatment. * For non critical patients, expect long waits in ER and minimal updates from care staff re: status of your treatment. Little or no response to requests to see a nurse based on my five visits over last two years. This is not uncommon unfortunately. * Must be pro active in care (squeaky wheel). Staff will respond to call button but follow through can take upwards to 30 minutes, as long as a couple hrs, or not at all. * It took 21 hours to get my meds in their system. Just know that if you have meds that you take daily, you may miss a dose or two. * Most portals release test results immediately. Their portal offers no patient care information. Why have a portal? Places like St John's, and there are many, need to invest in their staff so they can feel empowered rather than overwhelmed when doing their jobs. Happy employees, equates positive outcomes. Unfortunately patients in crisis and family members have to carry the load and advocate for their own quality care. My recommendation: * Cedars for high acuity issues (things that might need surgery) and local hospitals for mainline issues. I would return to this hospital over Los Robles or Community Memorial. * If possible have a family member or friend present with you to advocate for your care. * Be kind and firm in interactions with health professionals. * Familiarize yourself with patient rights. Learn how to advocate for your needs as it relates to your healthcare. YouTube has a wealth of information. Our healthcare system is broken so we as patients/loved ones need to get educated. read more

My son went to the ER. 9 hours there and no IV, no heart monitor hooked up and no doctor. He and I were put in an ER room without anything or anyone checking on him. After 9 hours we left against medical advice. I took him to a different ER in the morning and he got the help he needed. Worst care ever! read more

We went to the emergency room and we only waited for about 10 minutes and we were called in. The nurses were very attentive and efficient. I just wish they were a little more warm towards their patients. Its all about business. The ER in general was clean. But the room where we were placed was not cleaned and disinfected. Prior to being moved to a room, we were in the hallway. The empty room across us had used gauzes all over the floor and sink counter; opened plastic container with pee, - seemed like there was a mad dash and urgency to get the last patient out of that room. There was a sign outside this room was cleaned. An employee went to put a new bed, picked up some items for disposal. Then after few minutes we were told we will be moved into the room. Disgusting and terrifying. Used gauzes still on the floor. Did not see anyone mopping, disinfecting nor sweep the floor. This place is absurd! When I arrived, I was rudely greeted by an older woman with short jet black hair and thick glasses. She was checking the emergency patients in that morning. She was very off putting and had a negative demeanor. She would not allow me to go back to see my sick husband. Finally the doctor and nurse had to stop what they were doing and come escort me back. The woman at the front desk is probably in the wrong position made obvious by the fact that she liked the control. Furthermore, he was not able to see an MD upon request- only a PA. They did a terrible job at putting in his IV and blew out his vein causing him even more pain. All of the pain medication that was supposed to enter his IV slowly leaked out under his skin and provided no relief. We left St. John's hospital and drove directly to CMHospital where able to get the pain under control. read more

An exceptionally bad experience was had with ER provider Christopher Sikes. I strongly recommend that persons of color, or those living with an intellectual disability seek medical care from an alternate provider/facility. I speak based on personal experience and observations alone, which have led me to conclude that these were determinants of the non-medical treatment received. The provider seemed hurried while attending to the patient, and had discharge instructions in hand upon his return after examining the patient for all of 2 minutes, maximum. After the nearly 4 hour wait there was no offer to address questions or concerns, and no information whatsoever provided as preparation for what may be expected following illness/injury. I suppose all that you may need to know is expected to be contained in the discharge instructions the computer spat out. No nurse attended to us at any time. Of the countless nurses on duty, 2 of them were on the internet in the nurses station, and 1 was viewing YouTube on her cellphone while seated directly outside of a patient's room. St. John's Hospital is an unfortunate case of what happens when you give scrubs and lab coats to individuals who lack empathy and compassion. read more

Unfortunately, while visiting, had to take relative to emergency room. Wheelchairs were conveniently located outside of the entrance doors and the check-in process was quick and efficient. We were quickly taken to a room. The emergency treatment area is smaller and felt very crowded but it does serve its purpose. It is loud however which is somewhat understandable. Staff are excellent, patient, and professional. Ended up having to admit relative to the hospital proper. The actual hospital wing is newer and the rooms are more spacious than most hospital rooms I have visited. Pros: outstandingly patient and kind nurses and CNAs, clean hospital rooms, nice gift shop, impressively helpful volunteer staff Cons: New chapel still under construction, elevators can be a little tricky to locate, Limited cafeteria hours and vending machines are located in the cafeteria read more

I accompanied my 85 y/o mom to a bone scan . The hospital is very clean and the staff is very professional.Our mom, mom's caregiver and I all had a great experience with Marissa in radiology. She is very kind, competent and warm, too. She put my mom at ease who was very frightened. Our mom has mobility problems and Marissa was very careful and was excellent at giving an IV injection to our mom whose anxiety was overwhelming. Thank you for doing a great job- Marissa! read more

My son just started his summer by tripping up the stairs and hitting his forehead. I instantly knew from the laceration that he would need stitches, so we headed to the ER. We were greeted and brought in very promptly. The triage nurse noticed my son was shaking, so after his vitals, he got a warm blanket to wrap around him. Dr. Davies was the ER attending physician and was fabulous. My poor son was so scared and he did his best with trying to comfort him, distract him, and educate him all at the same time. Stitches are never fun, but he got the job done quickly and in a sterile manor. We were in and out within an hour of everything. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a follow up call the next day from the Dr checking in on him and asking if I had any other questions. Based off this experience, I would definitely go back to this ER (but hopefully that won't be necessary!) read more

Had out patient surgery yesterday . I pre-registered on line but admitting could not find it, it went pretty smooth & she got me registered pretty quick. Tip , try to get the first surgery of the day . I was first in, first out. The pre/post surgical nurses were terrific from beginning to end. They all understood my complicated case & everything went very smooth . The nursing care was pretty amazing, as everyone was in a good mood & seemed to really care. I can't comment on floor nurses but pre & post surgical was 5star A+ . I've had my share of surgeries & hospital stays and know the difference. The best thing about first surgical case of the day is in post op, you are first in and out so you don't have to try to recover or get a nurses attention because of others wailing in pain around you. None of that here, perhaps why I had such an excellent experience because the attention was focused on my case. The reason for 4stars overall, I didn't receive a post op phone call which had always happened in the past. It wasn't super busy and i felt a little rushed out, as I remember i was still the only case in post op when i left. I had told them prior to surgery that upon waking I get very sick from anesthesia. They gave me meds pre op & post but didn't give them enough time to work post op . I puked all the way home and when i got home for approx 2 hours . was afraid i'd blow a stitch . Thank goodness I didn't . The hospital was very clean & modern & free parking but I didn't notice too many hand sanitizing/ mask stations . Overall I would trust my care to this hospital in the future if my doctor preferred . read more

Came in for chest pains. During all the many tests, the ER doctor said I looked like I had Myasthenia Gravis because my left eye blinked. Said I should go to a neurologist. ***DO NOT COME TO THIS HOSPITAL*** My elderly mother has been sitting in this hospital since Saturday afternoon. I have not had one doctor or nurse call me to update me or get her medical history since the admitting nurse called me on Saturday. I left message for Social worker who finally called me last night with no updates promising a doctor would call me first thing this morning and that did not happen. I called the Nurse Supervisor Rose who did not show empathy or offer any help besides she will have doctor call me within ten minutes and that was 30 min ago. The day 911 was called we told them to take my mom to her normal hospital at Los Robles and they denied her. I have requested multiple times to have my mom transported and denied. I live out of state so have asked family friends to advocate in person for me and they are getting same results....NOTHING. If anyone knows who I can contact to advocate for my poor Mom, please let me know. This has been horrible and I can only assume my Mom is not being cared for while in this horrific hospital! read more
