As a product of private education I knew I wanted to the same for my children. Living equidistant to two Catholic schools in the area and a few others just a sort drive away, our family had options. I followed the school for two years prior on social media and via their website to make sure this is where I wanted my son to begin his educational career - so far so GREAT! The principal rocks and is truly committed to making a good school a great school. Parents, you must also know your involvement is imperative, its not just a place where you send your kids - your help is also needed. As they say, it takes a village! As the the school is located in an emerging area, I have a feeling that the area will experience a renaissance with Space X and Tesla just down the street. This is a wonderful school community with dedicated staff and teachers. The school offers a well balanced curriculum and a wide range of activities for all ages. During Covid communication has been regular and the school was able to reopen safely to all students to close out the year. read more

My son has been attending St. Joseph school since kindergarten. The school has met and superseded my expectations especially during COVID. The teachers were able to jump right in and start virtual teaching seamlessly. My son was always engaged and happy. The Teachers and staff are amazing. I just can't say enough about this school. My daughter just started at St Joseph school this year and I'm happy I made this choice for her education. The school is a community and everyone has been super supportive. During Covid it's been a trying time for everyone but this school has been exceptionally informative regarding implementation of procedures and protocols to keep the students and staff safe. I feel like the staff all cares about their jobs from the principal down to the Maintanance staff and everyone in between that keep the school functioning. Pros: instant communication with the teacher via an app that's used, people care about each other and the students, the education level is higher than many surrounding public schools. Cons: limited sports, class size could be smaller, required volunteer hours can be difficult to complete (but they try and work with you on this) I would recommend this school. read more

I went here from kindergarten all the way to 8th grade, I liked my classmates and MOST of my teachers except for like a handful who were really mean. One of the things I remember most about this school is the way the office personnel handled situations. I graduated from this school back in 2014 so I don't know who's gotten fired or retired since then. But when I was in the 4th grade, my mom (single mother of 3 who worked full time everyday) bought me these really nice white shoes that had small silver charms on top that made me really happy as a little girl. I begged for these shoes. Fast forward a week or so, my whole class got in trouble for playing with water orbeez (they threatened to call Hawthorne PD on us because of these little water balls ) and so I was sitting in the office getting yelled at very fiercely by the principle (Whelan) and this other lady who worked in the office who was in charge of all the money coming through (Ms Rutherford) . I was a good kid, my mom worked too hard for me to be acting up in school. Trust me when I say that nothing evil or malicious was intended when these water orbeez were brought to school. We were all just kids, excited about a new trendy toy. I want to compare them to today's pop its, they're just fun to have. Anyway, I was sitting in the principal's office amongst my entire 4th grade class when the lady in charge of money (Rutherford) stomped over to me and yelled in my face to take off my shoes. As a 9 year old, I was really embarrassed that I had to take my shoes off in front of everyone. My socks were ripped. Kids were laughing. Rutherford came back a couple minutes later and gave me my shoes back.... she had broken the charms off my new shoes. My shoes were very obviously tampered with and they looked so ugly to me after that. I felt sick to my stomach and scared to go back home with my new shoes in that condition. I never wore them again. And I'll always remember that. read more

I grew up studying in a Catholic school and as a parent, I wanted the same quality education that I had been given to pass down to my children. I am very happy that I have the opportunity to enroll my child at Saint Joseph School as it has given my son the same quality of education that I had and also taught him to be a good Catholic. Mr. Donohue, our principal, is very professional and friendly at the same time. With my experience, he never leaves any of my emails unanswered. He helps a lot in informations that I need and if we needed guidance/assistance. I can say that they have very competent teachers who are also understanding and very flexible on my child's needs, pandemic or not! School staffs are highly trained, resourceful and helpful. I never had a bad experience with them. Very knowledgeable, friendly and polite in phone or in person. From the principal, teachers, staffs and Fr. Greg as well as the Church staffs, they are highly trained professionals with a HEART! read more

I would encourage those families seeking a family oriented school culture and community to come to St. Joseph School. I currently have a child in 2nd grade and a TK student, who by the way began his school journey as a remote learner, thrilled and happy attending this school. Aside from the academic excellence provided, they are introduced to the arts through music, drama, Spanish, art, and physical education. Advanced Technology has been a key component bringing this school to the 21st century as well. St. Joseph has been in constant communication with parents and demonstrates the value of our opinion in improving its practices. Teachers are professional and genuinely care about students. Unfortunately there isn't a "zero stars" option so this will have to do. I am a former student and, ironically, this place was a hellhole. I understand that my experience was different than most but overall most of the things I am about to describe affects all students. I also think it's important to note that I go back every year, for the fiesta(as much as I hate to support to such a place) and I had a friend there that I would ask about the school, and my opinion still hasn't changed. Now for the details. From what I could tell, the education was terrible. As a kid I wanted to learn so badly and the idea of school excited me. But going to that place did not help. The people were horrible. For the most part. I was severely bullied by the students. The teachers were mostly good. My favorite teacher however was only there for one year and then left. Gee I wonder why. And don't even get me started on the vice principal! At some point I remember I was in trouble all the time and I can only remember one of the reasons. I got detention for forgetting my recorder. And the punishments weren't really that fair. Nothing like the 60's but for some reason I don't think standing against the poles or walking in circles on asphalt was the best option. Although it wasn't that different from any other day since after 4th grade, if I remember correctly, your two options are play sports or walk in a circle. Playing sports wasn't an option for me so I would read and walk but I was told it wasn't allowed! In fact, there was a lot of restrictions, but what do you expect from a cult? The worst of it though was the food rule. You have to eat everything or you weren't allowed to leave. I am not kidding. One time I almost threw up because of this. And another time a friend of mine, who is lactose intolerant, was told to get a milk carton by the vice principal even after she explained this. Thanks for considering our health! The vice principal also told us it was a sin not to eat all our food. This horrible concept affected me for quite some time even after escaping. Speaking of escaping. Here's just some ways this cult compound effected me. I daydreamed and fantasized about leaving that place. From secret agents to mythical creatures I thought up any scenario that lead to me being helped to escape. In fact, the weight of everything was so crushing I retreated into my own little world to avoid the terrible reality I was living. As you can imagine this had very negative affects for me later on. Similarly I didn't believe other schools existed and I never thought I would ever leave. Nothing could convince me there were other schools. Not even talking/seeing other kids or visiting another school(an experience that put me in shock). But that's what these catholic schools do. They make you close minded and gullible. And it's sad that people pay tuition to them when they could get an experience that's worth more than what their asking for(if that's even possible since they ask for so much money) at a school that asks for no tuition money. There were also other horrible things but since they are common in all catholic schools I won't waste your time on something you can read lots about else where. One of the greatest schools that I have ever been to in my entire life but this this kid who starts fights and never gets in trouble
