Our previous vet before moving said this vet was trying to take advantage and has no ethical values if they tried to do that. This place is just out for a money grab. I came back to get my cats second booster and they charged me another $75 dollars after already charging me for the first half of the vaccines. I have NEVER been charged for each half of a vaccine. Absolutely ridiculous and should at the very least be told theres another charge for the second visit. I have mixed feelings about this place. I get the impression it's a clinic that caters to lower-income pet owners. I'm pretty low income, so that's perfect for me. The staff was very friendly, and the doctors was the sweetest person in the world, and I had the impression they all really cared about and loved animals. The price was also very cheap: I just needed shots so they let me pay for the shots and did not include a mandatory exam, which every other place did include. They still gave my little guy a brief exam, at no charge, because it was his first time there. My only concern is that while I was waiting for the doctor, I saw a flea crawl into my cat's coat. I tried to catch it, but my cat was fidgeting and his coat is very thick. My cat is an indoor cat without any other animals inside, so he's not on any prevention, and I've never had a problem with fleas in the two other vet clinics he's been at. I brought this to someone's attention. They tried to find it, couldn't, and made the comment that that is one of the reasons you should keep your indoor cat on flea and heart-worm protection--because you don't know what they'll pick up or where. I disagree, especially with the potentially fatal reactions some cats can have to flea prevention medications. (Honestly, I don't let my cat roam outdoors for the same reason I don't take my cat to places that are potentially infested with fleas?) The clinic made it good and gave my cat a pill that killed all fleas within 30 minutes--for free. In the future, however, I'm going to need to weigh the risks against the benefits. read more

A beautiful, black stray kitty wandered up to our doorstep right before Halloween, and what kind of monster could just toss it back out to those roving bands of Satan worshipers? Forward to February, and she is in heat. Hooray. Luckily, St. Louis Pet Clinic offers a discount to folks who want to spay or neuter strays. I dropped off Kitty in the early morning and she came back feeling and looking fine (except for that sexy shaved patch on her belly and a bit of loopiness from the anesthesia, but that was expected.) Service was friendly and efficient. They do surgeries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Now Kitty has stopped yowling and I can sleep again and things are all good. read more

My family has been taking our dog to this clinic and its new location for many years. No matter what is wrong with the animal doc and his staff take the time to make sure all your questions are answered and that you understand what needs to be done. In the stretch of time we have been going to him we have lost more then one pet and needed to have them put down do to age or other unforeseeable circumstances. The vet and his staff have always been polite and respectful about this and allow you to be there with your bet when it happens and stay as long as you need after to say your good bys. On more then one occasion he has stayed after hours to treat someones animal because it was an emergency. I would not trust my pets well being to any one else and dread the day he retires. read more

I used to love this place, but was very disappointed with my visit yesterday. Even though I had an appointment and arrived on time (early, actually) I waited an HOUR after my scheduled appointment time before the doctor came in. He was new, and it didn't seem like he had even reviewed my pets history at all before coming in. He was there for maybe 90 seconds and then that was it. Recently, Stella ate rat poison and I needed to squeeze her in for a follow-up after her visit to a vet ER and STL Vet Center made time and squeezed her in at the last minute. They're reasonably priced; always ask before charging you for anything; the vets and techs are super amiable and sweet to Stella and myself; and, following Stella's check up, I've received daily calls just to make sure that she's okay and behaving normally. We have been taking our pets to St Louis Veterinary Center for the past 35 years. We were appreciative and enjoyed the care and personal service that Dr Wagenknecht provided. Over the past few years they have added additional veterinarians. As a result, the veterinarian that exams our pet is usually not the veterinarian that does the follow-up exam or the phone call. The familiarity with us and our pets has been lost. It is exasperating to explain the same issue with three different veterinarians. In addition, they seem to be preoccupied with billable time and it feels like they are nickel/diming you for everything. To me, they have gone west county corporate. I have lived in the city for most of my life and enjoyed the personal service of the many businesses that I frequent. If I desired west county corporate then I would be residing with my siblings and parents in west county. As a result, I sadly can no longer recommend St Louis Veterinary Center and encourage you to go elsewhere. read more

I took my cat to see the Veterinarian here about two months ago. I chose this location based on its vicinity to my house, along with its overall visibility. My cat had been exhibiting odd behavior, such as licking the cement on my porch, not eating very much...just acting weird. I'd had a cat years ago who'd starting licking the cement patio and it turned out he had renal failure and that the licking was a common symptom of a cat being sick. I brought all this up to the vet and they suggested a full series of blood tests. Everything came back normal, and they assured me that he was fine and I left confident that my cat was just acting weird. Fast forward a month and my cat was acting weirder---vomiting after every meal, acting lethargic, spending all day sleeping in the same location in the house (he normally chose a new favorite spot to sleep weekly or daily). This was alarming, so I decided to get a second opinion. I took my cat to the Chippewa Animal Hospital via a friend recommendation. Once I got there, the Vet was very alarmed at how much weight my cat had lost and immediately recommended an x-ray along with a full blood panel (St. Louis Veterinary Center wasn't open on weekends so I couldn't get records sent). He called me later that day after the X-Ray and told me that Arthur (my cat) had a massive tumor near his small intestine. He told me that most tumors in cats are malignant and that he recommended that I either schedule an exploratory surgery/removal of the tumor or have Arthur put down because he probably only had a few weeks to live. I scheduled a surgery for 2 days later, but sadly, later that night, Arthur started having a painful seizure. He was having trouble breathing, his tail was puffed out, and my other cat (his brother) and my dog (his sister) were visibly worried, as were I and my wife. We realized he was dying so we took him to the emergency vet and had him put down. I have given a lot of thought about leaving this negative review. I asked myself, "Did the vet team at St. Louis Animal Hospital do all they could to help out my cat?" And the answer I came to was "no." They could have recommended X-Rays. They could have taken me more seriously. I feel that if we'd caught this tumor earlier my cat would have had a much higher chance of survival, seeing as how he was only 10. Do yourself a favor, future clients, or anyone reading this post. Do your research. If you feel the need to, take your business elsewhere. I've had wonderful customer service and care at Chippewa Animal Hospital. Just today I received a sympathy card from Chippewa Animal Hospital regarding the passing of my cat. I recently adopted a Maine Coon kitten and so I was looking for a new vet... I made an appointment at this place because it is located a few blocks from my home. Today the vet office calls and reminds me of my appointment tomorrow and randomly mentions a "$9.95 COVID fee" for extra cleaning... SO i called 8 other area vets and all of them said they have not and will not charge a COVID fee... I obviously made a new appointment elsewhere. It is not about the money... it is about a business charging a new customer (Or any customer) a "COVID fee" for extra cleaning. If this business needs an extra $10 from me to make sure their business is clean, I'll go to a place that has always had high cleaning standards and isn't gouging their customers of money. So very sad that a business would implement an additional fee during such a strange and sad time. Shame on this business. Find somewhere else to go- St.Louis has dozens of vets and most don't charge pandemic fees for cleaning. read more

We have taken all of our animals here since moving to the city back in 2013. When our Doberman/Beagle mix Ranger died suddenly last April as we were packing to leave for a weekend trip to Chicago we felt sad, helpless and unsure of what to do. We called them and they told us to bring him in right away and assured us he would be in good hands. They gave us the option to cremate him which we did and had his ashes ready for us to pick up along with a card signed by the whole staff giving us there condolences and to our surprise it also included his paw prints when we returned home that weekend. When we finally decided it was time to get another dog we rescued a Siberian Husky named Hush. She was a abused as a puppy so she is very skiddish and afraid of males. They did everything they could today to make her feel comfortable and unafraid during her exam and when it was time to get her vaccines. She even made friends with the male doctor. Which was surprising as she is still coming around to men including my husband. So progress is being made! I wouldn't take either of my dogs or my kitty anywhere else! The staff is amazing and good at what they do! So if you are looking for a new vet I highly recommend them. They are good at getting our animals in to be seen when needed and it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg by the end of the visit and we aren't there for hours. Hush's whole vet visit was maybe 45 min and that included me waiting around for the test results of her fecal exam. I know one of the female doctors just left who we loved but I have nothing bad to say about the staff or our experience today. All in all it was a good trip to the Vet! read more

Maybe they are under new management or something, because this doesn't seem like the same place I've been taking my dogs all these years. I have called 5 times in the past month trying to get my them in for a nail trim and shots, and they never have any openings. I wasn't even asking for a specific time, but the woman I spoke with over the the phone said they didn't have anything open until late April. It seems just a little ridiculous. To top it off, the new desk staff is less than friendly, not very helpful and definitely not flexible. They seem uninterested and definitely unapologetic about constantly being unable to make an appointment. This is not my vet that I go to and I do not recommend this to anyone. It may be "cheap" but cheap is not always the best way to go. I adopted a puppy in June and she was spayed, but it was an incomplete spay (do not adopt from Dent County Animal Shelter...EVER...horrible experience with them too). Since it was an incomplete spay, I had to take my puppy to their partner clinic, which was this place to get her fixed properly. Sadly, due to miscommunication error and an incompetent vet he cut my puppy open, found no uterus and sewed her back up rather than search for an ovarian remnant like he should have since Dent County and the Clinic's front desk person was informed of this possibility. No one even called me regarding the fact that I brought a puppy in for a spay, yet the vet found no uterus. Pretty much my puppy was cut up for nothing. Then when we spoke with the vet regarding this situation, he was more interested in talking about non-medical topics rather than the next possible steps that could be taken. He even tried to persuade us to leave the ovarian remnant and allow our puppy to continue to exhibit signs of heat and all that is associated with it (ie. attracting males to mate with her). He tried to scare us with this invasive surgery and pretty much say anything to not have to do this surgery. He is horrible and even made me point out the front desk girl who I spoke with regarding the ovarian remnant in front of everyone (very unprofessional). This is a very horrible vet and if I had a choice I would have never brought my puppy there. The vet, I think is the only one who works there, he is an old man with white hair and his 2 cats are the ones that roam around the Pet Clinic. read more

Was not told there was a "handling" fee in addition to the actual nail clipping. When I called to ask them to honor the price I was quoted the vet Dr. Philip Wagenknecht was rude and tried to tell the handling fee was for holding the dog..my boyfriend who is the dog owner held his dog the entire time. Where the handling fee came in is beyond me. After he begrudgingly agreed to refund me ten dollars (which i would have been happy with) he thought I had hung up the phone and proceeded to call me a fuc*ing bi*ch and did not think I heard him. Needless to say I'll be disputing the entire charge with my bank and filed a complaint with the BBB. If he treats the human customers this way imagine how he treats your beloved pets. read more

I'm so happy to have found this clinic which is close to my work. To me, I find that the staff and veterinarians here are more interested in the animals than making a profit like most other clinics. They do not try to 'upsell' - I never feel pressure to purchase these wellness plans that are actually a complete scam (qualified to say that thru personal experience). My pets enjoy being here, as well. I can only give high praises and recommend it to anyone. Have not yet utilized the pet sitting but from what I read, I definitely will the next time I need this service. read more

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experiences at St. Louis Veterinary Center. The staff, vet techs, and veterinarian are always friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. I trust them completely with my dog's health, safety, and comfort. The cost is low (based on experiences with previous vets in another state) and the techs even call after a visit to check in on their patients. I highly recommend them as any family's vet. We first started visiting after my dog broke his toe jumping around. The vet saw him right away and splinted his foot. We came back in every so often to have his foot examined and rewrapped. This was the best way to insure that he wouldn't need to go in for stressful and costly surgery. I'm so glad the vet recommended the course of action she took, because now he has a clean bill of health and he's a happy little Dude with no surgery! read more

I took one of my cats here yesterday, as I adopted her a few months ago and needed to get her a check up because she was showing some concerning symptoms. The vet was extremely thorough with the exam, and helped me understand what could be going on with my kitty. She made sure that the test results would be communicated to me ASAP even though she would be going out of town, which I appreciated very much. The vet tech was also very kind and patient, as well as the receptionist. Overall I felt relaxed and knew that my cat and I were in good hands. My dog was hit by two cars today and St. Louis veterinary center was the closest vet to the accident. We rushed our dog there and the vet tech immediately took him to be checked out. No questions asked. The doctor was truly wonderful and kept us updated the whole time. They seem to genuinely care about animals and even concerned owners. Very positive experience at this veterinary center. All the staff was very warm and welcoming. I previously had a very unsettling experience at a different office and was skeptical about taking my dog ANYWHERE. Dr. Duris was very patient and answered all of my questions. He was very personable and I didn't feel rushed at all. Everything was very thorough and I don't feel as though anything was missed or overlooked! I look forward to making this center my pets new home for all our veterinary needs! Very Disappointing!! I brought my dog in for rabies shot, flea medication, and ears cleaning. The rabies shot went fine. My dog weighs about 130 pounds. The flea medication covers dogs who weigh up to 123 pounds in this case I had to purchase more medication to cover the 7 pound difference. I got home and realized that the two medications were for dogs of different weight. The vet charged me $54 for the 123 pound dog medication and charged me again $54 for the additional medication for a 9 pound dog. So in essence the flea medication for as 9 pound dog and 130 pound dog is the same. What a rip-off! The vet was supposed to clean my dogs ears all he did was stick a que-tip in the dogs ear and check for an infection. He came back and told me that there was no infection and said to keep cleaning the way I had been cleaning. How did he know I was cleaning the dogs ears? Did he not see all of the dirt on the que-tip. Obviously I was not doing a good job looking at the dirt on the que-tip. I thought I was paying this guy to clean his ears. So I was out of another $37 for poor work. I went home and flushed my dogs ear myself. I hope I did a good job, maybe I should pay myself. What a rip-off!! read more

I went there for them to fix two of my dogs, of which one I had them clip her nails. She is a black lab and they cut her down so low that she bled. I was looking for a place nearby to board my dog when I had to travel out of town unexpectedly. I found St. Louis Veterinary Center online and saw that the prices for boarding were really low in comparison to some other local places. I typically would board my dog at one of those fancy places with web cams and dog suites, etc... but I also figured I'd give this place a shot. I'm glad I did. The staff was really kind and helpful. I let them know my dog isn't good around big dogs, so they assured me they'd keep him with the small dogs. He also got a bath, nails trimmed, and ear cleaning before he left, so he was smelling great when I picked him up. I had to travel out of town last minute again the next weekend, and they were able to take him on short notice again. I feel really comfortable leaving him there and the price cannot be beat. I figure if anything bad happened, at least he is already at the vet! I haven't used the actual vet services yet, but I plan to when he needs his yearly checkup and vaccinations. read more
