I've taken my both of my cats to see Dr. Tan over the years and have always received excellent service and care for my beloved kitties. He provides more than fair prices for his clients and has a heart of gold. When he couldn't properly diagnose one of my cats, he didn't charge me for anything. He made a recommendation of where to go and what to look for and thankfully we found a clinic that could take in my beloved Messy. When my oldest, Keira, received an unfortunate injury, Dr. Tan was able to quickly heal her up, where she received stitches and was nursed back to health over the course of several days. Overall, I've had nothing but great experiences here. I'd say the only thing that could use improvement without question is the wait times. If your beloved pet needs immediate assistance this might not be a location for you. As I became a client through recommendation, I was informed that you need to arrive early right around opening in order for my cats to be seen quicker. I'd say that I've spent at most two hours for one of my cats to be seen while the earliest has probably been at least 30 minutes. That isn't to say that Dr. Tan isn't trying hard enough, it's that he gives full concentration to each client and honors each one caring for them in order as you arrive/check-in. If I could put zero stars I would. My dog was literally dying. Having issues breathing in front of the vet tech and dr. I don't even think he's a dr. They did nothing nor said NOTHING! Even if he couldn't help him, they said nothing!! They told me to go see a neurologist specialist and gave me wrong information twice. That's why you only pay $35 for the visit. First my dog developed a hematoma on her right ear, so we took her to see Dr Tan. She then went in for surgery to get the puss drained. After she came out of surgery they bandaged the wound. My dog then had shaken the bandage off probably because it was irritated. We noticed that were they placed stitches her ear started to fold due the scarring. We took her back in to get the stitches removed and were expecting for the doctors to rebandage her ear. They didn't. We took her back because they left one stitch. They removed it then her ear collapsed even more. So we took her back in for them to check on my dog. They then did another surgery on her to straighten out her ear. They had mentioned they would put a medical device inside the ear to hold the ear straight up. When she came out of surgery we were expecting for them to do what they said. They actually placed a bandage that has a popsicle stick wood type thing in her ear that was right against her eardrum! My dog then had shaken off the bandage again because of the popsicle wood piece. We then looked at her ear and saw that they had cut off some of our dogs ear. Her ear is now collapsing even MORE. And one ear is shorter than the other.Overall don't bring your pet if you don't want your pet to be permanently messed up!!!! Would NOT RECOMMEND!!! read more

Dr Tan and Mrs Tan came highly recommended! I recently purchased a XL American Bully. After completing her 2nd set of shots I knew it was time to get her fresh fade aka ears cropped. Well known Bay Area dog breeders all recommended St Louis Veterinary. I went on a Friday afternoon, walked in and signed in like everyone else. Waited about 35 minutes and was taken into an exam room with Mrs Tan. She then explained the entire process and let me leave my pup overnight for her ear crop. She pulled out their ear crop binder full of styles and photos of ear crop styles and let me choose the one for my pup. Before paying , Mrs Tan even let me walk my pup into the back kennel area and place her into the kennel, I had to let them know I was impressed by how clean it was! They really keep the kennel area very clean as well as the exam rooms. I kissed my pup and went on to pay. The young women at the front were very nice as well. They even offered to charge my phone for me when I said my battery was low. The lobby area was all good energy. I don't understand some of the negative comments. I think some people are just miserable and hard to please. My experience as a new client was definitely 5 stars read more

This goes out to Tal, I believe is her name. She has an accent. I called to get an estimate on how much they charge for a visit and the cytopoint injection for my 15lb dog. It was hard to understand her, and I kindly asked her if she could repeat what she said, especially since she sounded far away. I could tell she was annoyed, and when I asked her when her soonest availability was, she said it's first come first serve and she said thank you and hung up. I called back again to get her name and when she provided me that, I told her it was very rude of her to hang up like that and she said thank you again and hung up on me. I don't know what her issue was especially when I wasn't being difficult whatsoever so if you have anything going on in your personal life, don't bring that to work. My dog is big and usually doesn't like going to the vet, but he loves Dr. Tan - and that says a lot!!! Dr. Tan is an outstanding veterinarian. He gets straight to the point and doesn't waste time with unnecessary procedures. You can tell Dr. Tan genuinely cares about animals and truly understands them. His approach is practical, efficient, and backed by real experience. It's rare to find a vet who is both so knowledgeable and compassionate. If I could put a lower review I would.This doctor told me my cat need medicine and he gave him shits and meds my cat was walking before visit my cat was eating before visit my cat was useing the bathroom before visit my cat was ALIVE before the visit,the afternoon after the visit my cat was stumbling,could not stand straight, could not get to the litter box ,was peeing on the floor on him self because he was to weak to get up,was not eating,and he started coughing which never happened in the 7 years I had my baby and he layed his head on me and he was barely breathing,I rushed him to oak vet and my baby died because the meds poisoned him and he had reactions to the meds,and it was a simple check up and I thought maybe he had some constipation.This vet office stinks,they don't do any work or checks on your pets and they medicate for something that isn't even wrong,spend the extra money go to oak vet hospital or somewhere they will actually help your pet.ease don't loose your baby like I have ,I will be reporting this vet to Californias Vet Board ,don't go thru what I AM. read more

Our cat Star is a 7-year-old persian mix. In 7 years, we have been taken advantage of by 2 local veterinarians. We walk in the door and they charge $2200 every time, x 4. They start with, " cat has infection, he needs IV", "oh his leg is hurt, we need xrays", "and he has a bite wound, we need rabies shot and bloodwork", and anything else they can add to the bill. Thank God people like Dr. and Mrs. Tan, and their friendly staff exist. Although they are 14 miles farther for me to drive, I will forever bring my pets back for their care. Our cat was not taken to the back for an exam without us. The nurse did the pre-examination and explained the injury and then Dr. Tran came in, confirmed the injury and gave the cat his shot and medicine to take home. Same exact condition as previous $2200 visits. I wonder how many animals have been put down for cost alone?? Our pets are insured, but Dr. Tan is a low-cost veterinarian, with love and compassion without taking advantage of your love for your pet. I have since told several friends, one with 15 cats, who is going Thursday for the first time. My visit was less than a 1-10/th of the last visit in cost, and Moey was back to his old self in the usual 2 days. They do work on a first come first serve basis, but I will wait for service like that any day of the week. Trust me, you will thank me 10 times over. DO NOT TRUST & DO NOT BRING PET!!! SHADY & UNHYGIENIC!!!! My cat of 4 years died last year due to staph infection from unclean tools and shitty surgery. He got a PU surgery for urinary crystals that was done by Dr. Tan, due to emergency vet doing it for 10k, and Dr. tan saying it would be done for 2.5k. He was sent home after a day with disinfectant, and a weeks worth of antibiotics (found this odd but was told he would be okay after a week no further instruction were given), he was okay for 1month then the same issue happened again took him back to the doctor who roughly grabbed him and only looked, no test no nothing, and said that the surgery site was smaller and that it need to be wider. He cut the surgery site with no local anesthesia, only a lady that's not a licensed vet tech holding him down, and only gave me disinfectant again. Did not trust him after that and decided to take my cat to an emergency vet after that shit show and was informed that he had a nasty staph infection in his bladder that crawled from his urethra (surgery site) which was caused by the PU collapsing (which they told me was cause by the structure being done poorly which lead to the infection to occur) and needed testing to see how far it spread, and know what antibiotics would work. He was put on antibiotics (which were $300 for 10), gabapentin (for pain), Prozac ( for anxiety and bladder inflammation), and Prazosin (to relax the bladder). At the end the antibiotics was unable to there job properly which lead to sepsis, and the surgery to reconstruct his urethra was not doable do to the infection not clearing up and he had to be put down. I should have realized this was place would not be safe for my Parker after stepping inside and it not being clean (blood at door entrance leading to a room), smelling bad, and no license vet tech. The other thing is I had to leave him overnight after the botched surgery only to pick him up dehydration, starving, and urinated with the same pee pad I put when dropping him off. Overall spent nearly 10k only to end up putting to rest. IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR PETS DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE!!! read more

This practice is an abomination. Extremely unorganized, super rude / unprofessional, and unhygienic. This place reeks on the inside and outside. When I walked in, there were unwashed blood stains everywhere. Waited 3 hours past my original appointment and did not see the vet until I flagged someone down about my appointment. The vet himself was not very competent and hastily misdiagnosed my dog. He suggested that I should not "waste" more resources on an old dog and let him ride off into the sunset and said he would not be able to perform any surgery because of the risk of litigation. The Vet also openly admitted he was out of date on the modern academia and did not know how to operate a computer. If you truly care about your animal, DO NOT take them here. It might be cheaper, but you are paying a hefty price in the long run. read more

I came here to get Boba's my Bully XL ears cropped, this was my first time here so I was definitely a lil iffy. I met with Doctor Tan's wife I believe and she gave me recommendations on what style works best for these dogs depending on how the ears develop prior to the surgery. She also sent me home with meds and stuff to dress up the ears with simple instructions for recovery. This place gets very busy and I was amazed how fast they got me in and out, driving from the South Bay it's an easy hour to get to. Boba's ears came out great, very happy with the work. I see a lot bad reviews here regarding this particular procedure with dogs that have infected ear and such. If you get lazy and don't following the instructions then guess what.... Your dog's ears probably gonna get infected, so make sure you clean them properly till the stitches come out. read more

The lady at the reception I think her name is Mrs pan is super rude and made the whole experience even worst. She forgot to provide me meds for one of my dogs and kept trying to blame me for not asking for it. How do I know my dog needed it if you guys did not explain anything to me? They tried to charge me for sedation for my dog when I did not have my dog sedated. This place is very unprofessional and I will not be going back. They even got my information mixed with another persons information and put our info with different pets for one of my other dogs when I tried to get medication. That could have been a terrible accident if I did not look everything over and just gave my dog the wrong medication. This place needs to get it together. It would be hard to replace Dr. Brian Tan. He is more skilled and talented than MOST any vet. No frills, but affordable prices, that are extremely hard to beat, and an efficiency and skill level to take care of the majority of your vet care needs without hearing, "we dont do that", "I am not trained in that", or "we will have to bring someone in or refer you" (for a huge chunk of change btw). It's a rarity these days to have a vet take care of so much, be skilled at so much, and be affordable and reasonable. Drive for an hour to see him for decades now whenever it really counts, and it's well worth the drive. Dont know what we will do when he isnt there anymore. It would be such a tremendous loss. Irreplaceable. We are from one of the biggest vet center areas in the US (Davis area), Tans own US vet school (UC Davis), and we drive to see him for a reason. He's that good. This vet is "first come, first serve" but you can go and put your number down and they will call you when it's your turn. The wait honestly wasn't that bad either. We've also shown up towards the end of the day and they got us in when realistically they could have turned us away, so we are very grateful for that. It's BY FAR the most affordable vet in the area. I know people come here from pretty far for this reason. Which is understandable! They really are! I called one Saturday night, at like 8pm figuring I'd get the voicemail, which would possibly have their hours because I was surprised that their hours said they were actually open Sundays... and someone actually answered the phone! I was so surprised! They confirmed they were open on Sundays. (However it looks like this may have changed so don't quote me on this!) The people working here are very sweet! There is a language barrier but it honestly doesn't matter as long as YOU can be patient and understanding. I don't think it's fair for other reviews to really say anything negative about this factor. It will only bother you if YOU allow it to and if it might be an issue, again, for YOU, then maybe go elsewhere because this vet is GREAT. The vet was also straight up and honest. My little Pup was elderly and on the very end stages of kidney failure. The vet said there's a possible treatment but my dog would likely not even respond to it at that point so he recommended against it. (My dog was 17 years old) We just wanted to make sure there was nothing else that could be done for my little guy. So we made sure he was happy and comfortable and about a month later we had to put him down. It's been almost 2 months since then but I wanted to make sure to write a good review for this vet because they were so sweet to my boy so I wanted to make sure to say thank you! read more

Neighborhood vet clinic; somewhat accessible. Not always clean. And understaffed. Also without a vet tech. Forgot to label meds for my two cats. Also, one had what eventually turned out to be a gut tumor. This was only late discovered so she needed to be put down very suddenly, somewhere else. The cat had earlier symptoms which were mentioned in the earlier visits to the St Louis clinic. During the cat's subsequent, sudden decline, it was pointed out to me by other vets that those earlier symptoms should have warranted an immediate ultrasound. At the time of the earlier exams at St Louis, no suggestion was made by them about an ultrasound, or even a steroid offered, after antibiotics and probiotics in earlier exam had not corrected the problem. They're also very slow in getting lab results and communicating them to the client Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be any price transparency, and it's hard to coordinate payment at times. And they're not open on the weekends. Lastly, the reception is not always friendly. Maybe in its heyday this place was the decent, go-to clinic for fur babies, and the vet is clearly a smart guy, yet the current negligent organization and terrible follow-up create nightmares for both the pets AND humans. Try another place. If you're pressed for resources, or simply need information, contact the veterinary teaching colleges, televets, Humane Society, etc. read more

This place is very questionable during covid time. Went to get our dog their first shots and the receptionist was sneezing and coughing like crazy, and not wearing a mask. She was handing us filled out vaccination forms and other things still. The wait times are pretty long but at least they take same day appointments and they're cheaper than surrounding vets. I think that's worth it. The doctor was nice, but like others have stated, was pretty rough when giving the shots to our small puppy. I called this clinic to get some information. As the woman who answered was giving me the information I started laughing, she assumed that I was laughing at her and she started yelling at me. I was taken aback and told her I was not laughing at her and was trying to explain what I was laughing at but she hung up on me. I kept calling back until they closed, it was probably 4 or 5 times and she kept hanging up on me. I wanted to explain that I was laughing at a dog walking by my office and wanted to apologize if she thought that I was laughing at her because I was not. I hope they read this and going forward they do not hang up on people as it is very rude and bad customer service. I called this place because I wanted to transfer my dogs from the ER to this clinic to get fluid treatment and blood work after my dogs ate a few Advil pills the night before. Mainly because I knew it would be cheaper than paying an ER bill and because this place was closer. Upon calling and trying to explain myself to the front desk, I heard some yelling and literally sounded like they were getting held up at gun point. My initial response was "What the hell?" It happened to be the Doctor that was yelling this whole time, he grabbed the phone and started yelling saying that I have to speak to the ER when I explained to the front desk that I had already spoken to them and they would send the case # that would explain all the information. As I was explaining to him he continued yelling at the front desk. So I just told them that I would find another vet with better service. Its great that this place offers services at a lower price but their customer service is HORRIBLE! If this is the way they handle humans I cant even imagine how they handle animals, would not recommend. read more

Alot of Dr. Tans perceived problems is cultural. Hes an old Chinese man and not the most commuticative person and customers might believe he's being rude when it's really that he doesn't do much small talk, hes to the point. As for cropping ears, it's a reasonable price and he does so many how can he NOT be an expert .When you go in a vet and see most of the people there with Pit Bulls you know he's does a superb job. DO NOT bring your pup there without 2 rounds of the Parvo shot. This is why dogs have gotten parvo there. Remember? Dont put your pup on the ground until it gotten it's shots, the story I read here could have been avoided. read more
