I have seen so many vets in an attempt to figure out my dog's gut. I've been told I'm overreacting and that his various gut issues and skin issues (all related, I bet) could just be managed. I've also been referred for way more expensive procedures that I didn't think were necessary. Finally, we were referred to Dr. Richter. He listened to my dog's history, understood my thinking, told me it made sense, and told me he understood the pathway I wanted to take. For once, I wasn't automatically crazy or a "helicopter" pup parent. He really gets it. Dr. Richter had a very reasonable grasp on my dog's history and the reasons for his issues. I am so looking forward to continuing treatment with him in the coming months, focusing on the gut and on my dog's past mold exposure. I can't say enough about what it means to be truly heard and understood by a vet, and have them speak to you on a well-informed level. Dr. Richter is not only brilliant, he also has excellent people skills. Most vets try to talk down to me or put me in my place when I come with as much info as I do, and that gets me nowhere, just burning my bank account and morale. So on the one hand, Dr Gary Richter was extremely knowledgeable and supportive over the course of my dog's senior years. There isn't another veterinary physical therapy facility like this in Oakland. On the other, years after my dog passed away and I'd left the Bay Area, I called Holistic to see if they had a recommendation for a commercial raw diet brand - Dr Richter is something of an expert on the subject. I didn't need a formula or a meal plan. Just a brand they trust. Instead of passing me a name they insisted that I book a $350 consultation, and wouldn't budge. That's a shade too mercenary in my opinion. I understand they're running a business, but when dealing with a former client who's spent thousands upon thousands of dollars over the span of years, you'd think a bit of courtesy would come into play. Full disclosure: I'm a former employee who years later has returned to this business as a client. My seven year old giant breed Mastador (50/50 EM/Labrador) was diagnosed with arthritis, so I brought him to Dr. Richter for further assessment and care. Dr. Richter is wonderful in many ways, one of my favorites being he believes in COMPLEMENTARY medicine. No, reread that word, he's certainly not doing practice for free, but he believes that holistic and western medicine can work together simultaneously to help achieve the best outcomes for patients. My beloved Kua now receives acupuncture for his arthritis, as well as natural herbs prescribed to help with inflammation. His treatment plan works in conjunction with his prescriptions from his conventional vet, and his mobility and happiness seems to improve every time we come. Though usually reserved around non-family, Kua LOVES coming here and interacts happily with staff and doctors. My little girl Jennie got bit by a rattlesnake at Sibley the other day. She was in 24 hour care then released with a really bad swollen front leg. We heard about hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment for snake bites/injuries and found Holistic Veterinary Care. Dr. Richter and his team squeezed us in with a same day appointment for two treatments and it saved Jennie from her suffering! First picture is Jennie after being released from the hospital. I've always wanted to come here but unfortunately it took a sad diagnosis of my pup to finally get me in here. I came in to be advised on holistic options to help my dog as he fights lymphoma. I got a lot of good info and was able to share alternative treatment options I had read online which they were open to hearing about and to having me try if I wanted to. I never felt judged or questioned for wanting to do things considered "out of the norm" for my dog. All the staff were kind and considerate and understanding. I left with some supplements to try, a free book full of information, a free bag of healthy freeze dried all natural ingredient food to try, and a free powder supplement to help boost my pup's immunity. My dog was completely at ease here - no shaking or trying to head toward the nearest exit like he does at our main vet. I am grateful for the experience I had here and if you are interested in holistic treatment for any condition or just to give your dog the best life possible, I highly recommend this place. I have never left a 1-star review for any business, but I was very disappointed by this place. After my dog's surgery, I needed to get him intensive physical therapy right away. After booking the initial appointment and paying the initial booking fee of something around $375, they let me know that they didn't have any physical therapy appointments for my dog for another 5 1/2 weeks. Had they been up front about this, I would not have made an appointment here, and I would have gotten my dog help at another place. At the initial appointment, the veterinarian felt like a passive spectator, stayed for all of 5-10 minutes, and when I asked a question, he told me to talk to the physical therapist, then walked out of the room. The only positives were that the physical therapist was very attentive and seemed knowledgeable, and the receptionist seemed kind and compassionate. The rest of my experience felt like an extraction from my wallet at my dog's expense. read more

I can't say enough good things about HVC. Dr. Ancier, Dr. Richter, Dr. Sterling & Dr. Koenig are all wonderful vets. They truly care for the well-being of the patients they see and it shows because my 14 year-old dog, Turbo, loves going to HVC for his acupuncture treatments, rehab sessions and chiropractic adjustments. Turbo has a condition called lumbosacral syndrome and has been going to HVC for over a year now to help stabilize this degenerative issue. As Turbo is aging, his spine along his lower back is causing compression on his nerves, which creates a tingling and painful sensation along the lower part of his body and his hind legs. With weekly acupuncture, laser therapy and rehab sessions, his condition has been stable and has not worsened over the course of the past year. Once a month, Turbo also gets an awesome back adjustment from Dr. Koenig who helps to realign his spine. Turbo ALWAYS feels great after his sessions at HVC. This vet only cares about money, not your pet. The veterinarians only care about their commissions which they get for EVERYTHING they do. My dog's test results were received after 5 days but they would not communicate them to me until the veterinarian came back after 2 weeks. She simply wouldn't hand this off because then she'd have to share the commissions for any follow up care. Abysmal, at best. Go somewhere else, plenty of options. read more

Like many of us who love our pets and want the best care for them, I've decided to switch to a more holistic practice. My dog is aging and has been having random issues and my vet who I've seen for years is an amazing vet and tends to lean on the conservative approach, which I prefer, but when presented with certain issues, he's apprehensive and doesn't seem sure what action he should take. He always says, "there isn't enough data to back up whatever theory." With that said, I think exploring the root cause with integrative medicine is the way to go which is what lead my search to this veterinarian. Unfortunately, I cannot review/comment on Dr. Richter services because I'm unable to get his front staff to call me back after a week of calling and leaving voicemails. He might be a great veterinarian with tons of experience and knowledge, but if your front staff is lacking, sadly it's reflective of the handling of this office, and potentially the wellness of my pet. If you're an established animal patient, maybe you have better success, but as a new patient wanting to get in, it's been disappointing. read more

And during that time, instead of looking at my dog, Richter kept looking at my feet. He barely asked any questions, then left so that a tech could make exercise recommendations. They tried to shuttle me out and then I asked if they were going to do any treatments while we were there and they said NO. $350 for an opinion. No treatment. The people at the front were so wonderful, so kind and I'm sorry they work there. There are other options out there that are a lot less scammy and will look you in the eye when speaking to you instead of checking out your feet. read more

I previously took my two cats to Holistic Veterinary Care. Their website gave me the impression they were knowledgeable about a variety of treatments for illness and prioritized wellness. I think this was the case with the vet I was initially assigned to, Dr. Buchanan, but she apparently left the practice and I was subsequently reassigned to three different vets, including Dr. Richter, and each of them missed critical (but obvious) issues that could have prolonged my senior cat's life had they been correctly identified. I had two senior cats and Dr. Richter's office diagnosed one of them with late-stage kidney disease. I hospitalized her for about a week to stabilize her and then began daily subcutaneous fluids and one monthly check-ups with Dr. Richter's office to track her progress and identify anything else I could be doing for her to make her more comfortable and slow the progression of the disease. After Dr. B left, I was assigned to what I believe was a temporary vet, Dr. V. I think Dr. V was like a Chewy "free advice" vet that you have access to when you create an account, and was moonlighting in actual vet offices that needed temporary support. Anyway, it was terrible. I went in for my monthly kidney check-up and labs, and Dr. V had not even looked at my cat's history. I brought in some wet food I had found that was not "prescription diet" kidney, but it was low phosphorous and high moisture content and the cat loved it, so I wanted to understand whether it was safe for her to start using as her main food. Dr. V literally just picked up the can I brought in and read the label to me. I had already done that, obviously. I can read on my own, thanks. I didn't come to the vet to have the can read to me. I wanted you to tell me how this food will interact with my cat's kidney disease. The visit was awkward, but the main point was to run the labs and see how the disease was progressing, so I just kind of brushed it off. Dr. B would always email me the results of my cat's tests as soon as they were in, so when I didn't get results back from Dr. V after three days, I called the office and they read me the results. Then two days later a blocked number called me and I let it go to voicemail. It was Dr. V telling me that she had bad news, that my cat had late stage kidney disease, and that she wanted me to come back in and talk about some ways to slow progression of the disease, including diet changes. At this point, I had been going to Holisitic Veterinary Care once monthly for the preceding six months to have regular lab updates to monitor the progress of my cat's disease. I told Dr. V that's why I was there. I asked her about my cat's diet with kidney disease AT THE APPOINTMENT. I get that she was new, but why wouldn't she have checked the patient file when the blood/urine results came back with high kidney values to see if this is something that had come up before? She would have had to check the prior test's values to understand the context for the current test's values. She didn't, obviously. I had a follow-up visit scheduled with Dr. V but I called up the office and asked to be assigned someone else. The front desk had some trouble someone else and ultimately assigned me to Dr. Richter. I went in for my next month's kidney checkup and had a brief visit with Dr. Richter and they took samples for her blood/urine check. I specifically asked at the appointment to check on a urinary infection that Dr. B had previously diagnosed her with. When Dr. Richter reported my results back, he did it via text message and told me that my cat's kidney values were high but stable and she was otherwise maintaining. I was assigned another vet for my next month's kidney check-up. I do not recall the name, but she also seemed new. She was actually fine. I have no complaints about her. However, she told me that the results showed the infection present from her prior visit was still there. I told her Dr. Richter never mentioned an infection to me, and I showed her Dr. Richter's, which did not mention an infection. The new vet seemed flustered. Like, what are you supposed to do? She couldn't be like, "Oh, my new boss missed it." So she was like, "well, why don't you come in next week and if it's still there, we will start her back on antibiotics." I agreed, scheduled my next visit, and then took my cat home. My cat died before that next visit. The UTI that Dr. Richter failed to identify, in connection with the kidney disease, caused a seizure. The ER vet was able to stop the seizure, but my cat never regained consciousness and we had to put her down the next day. I understand that cats with kidney disease will ultimately die of that disease, and that my cat was at a late stage. That said, I felt that the care she got at Dr Richter's office was substandard and I no longer trust them to provide veterinary care for my other cat. We go to a vet in Walnut Creek now and have received excellent care there. read more

I've been taking my dog, Ares, to Holistic Veterinary Care for about six months now. I love this vet! The staff is amazing. They all remember owners and pets, and they make a concerted effort to have relationships with their clients. Ares has shown marked improvement since starting rehabilitation following two TPLO surgeries, and he loves attending his sessions. I left a 1-star review after attempting to communicate about what had happened to my cat and their response is "Sorry about what you went through with your cat." -- the appropriate response is to respond to my very specific observations about the appalling quality of service that we received, not that my cat was ill in the first place. My 8yo at the time German Shepherd Halo began to develop an issue with one of her rear legs in January 2017 it as the months passed it showed more and more. We started taking her to specialist all over the Bay Area Orthopedic Surgeons, Neurologist getting many test, scans & MRIs, Halo is a sports dog (Flyball, Dock Diving) so the type injury was not easily diagnosed but by spring the letters DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) began being discussed from her DRs so my wife had her DNA tested to see if Halo carried the gene, sadly she did. While a positive test was not a 100% guaranty of DM her symptoms were hard to ignore, over shadowing Halos future. We were referred to HVC by Halos Neurologist, we met with 1 of the DRs at HVC who recommend Halo try swim therapy to keep her strength up, so 1 year ago tomorrow she started her final fight. For twice a week for a year she made the journey to HVC to get a massage, lazer & her ever so joyful swim. Every Tuesday & Thursday Halo was anticipating her trip to HVC vocally & running in circles around the house (even when she only had 2 legs that worked to do so). Once there she was greeted as if she was family, by 1 of the front of house support, waiting until either Betsy, Sandy, Anette or Valerie would come to take her to the gym. Once there she as she did with every thing took ownership of facility, did her therapy & swim then reluctantly get her shower. As her DM progress the care and love shown to Halo truly touched this crusty 58yo man spent a life time in the hard building industry. I am 100% convinced her time at HVC added 3 to 4 months to her life. HVC allowed my wife and I to hold on to Halo for longer than most dogs with DM have. I can't speak about everything HVC does, But I can speak about Rehabilitation Therapy Team in the gym, They are all Aces, Top Shelf Professionals, with hearts bigger than most mortal humans, and if you love your pet, this is who you want on your team. While this care does not come without cost, if you have the means to bare the cost, this facility has every thing here to give your pet a fighting chance to get better or slow the process of what it is fighting. I write this review today with a heavy heart, after losing my baby Halo puppy on Sunday 6/17/18. This clinic, the staff and the veterinarians are the best I have ever had my furry family members EVER visit. My kitty had bilateral FHO surgery. This is a big deal. He wasn't even yet 2 years old and an indoor only cat. I was completely heartbroken and worried. Dr. Richter and Dr. Buchannan helped guide me, suggest supplements etc, and I felt I was making the best decision possible. They were realistic regarding his recovery and their incredible team of kind, patient and compassionate people worked with my kitty, yo give him the best physical therapy possible to provide the best possible results given his situation. Let me tell you...5 months later, my kitty is practically back to normal activity if not normal. He jumps, runs, climbs the higher cat trees beating out his sister (who is super fast). He is happy and back to his normal loving sweet personality. There is NO WAY, my kitty could be here without this incredible team of insightful and knowledgeable professionals. They even would go to the trouble to schedule his appointments so no dogs would be in PT with him. HOW WONDERFUL IS THAT!!! He even received a graduation certificate and photo in a cap and gown for completion! I made an appointment over email to get my new 8 week old puppy in for a comp exam and was looking to establish a relationship with someone the manage my puppy's care. Booked weeks in advance and paid the cost of the visit upfront. Customer Service is terrible here, so i had to provide the same info multiple times and they scheduled me on Jan 2, without actually saying "hey, it's a Sat on New Year weekend." I just automatically marked my calendar for Monday the 4th, cause I didn't realize they would be open that weekend. Missed the appt, totally my mistake, owning it! Called and emailed to apologize and reschedule multiple times. No response! Shortly after my puppy started having tummy issues and puked a couple of times. I am first time puppy owner, so I was freaking out. Called a few more times and asked for them to fit us in cause puppy is sick. Lucy had acupuncture and underwater treadmill Therspt, as well as obstacle courses to build up muscle strength and balance and a home program. After five months of treatment (also our pet insurance helped cover the costs), she "graduated". We are so grateful to Dr. Ancier,and the vet clinicians, Betsy, April, Jessica, and the rest of the staff for helping Lucy regain her ability to have more energy and to run around, and not be in pain. My 10-year-old dog has developed IVDD--degenerative disc disease so I took her in for an appointment at Holistic Vet, I was a little worried given some of the recent reviews indicating the practice was more interested in profit than pets--and they do make you pay a hefty fee in advance to book an appointment. But there aren't a lot of other options for animal physical therapy in the area so I gave it a try. I wanted to review because the experience was absolutely wonderful. We met with Janella, a physical therapist, who was so reassuring and positive and taught me an easy, doable series of home exercises to keep my dog's back limber, her leg stable and her pain at bay. Janella said I COULD bring the dog in for in-office therapy as well, but that was up to me: my time and my budget constraints. She said we could do twice a week, once a week, twice a month, once a month, or not at all; the most important thing was the home-based exercises. So zero upselling, zero pressure, super supportive. That made me trust her and I am far more likely because of that to try at least some in-office therapy (also, I have doggy health insurance and it's covered, so my out-of-pocket costs are not too bad). We only met briefly with Dr. RIchter--it wasn't really why we were there--but he was also very kind, did not try to sell me anything at all, and seemed great. Also, the receptionist was incredibly welcoming, kind and efficient. I can't comment on what happened for other people, but based on my visit, I would recommend this practice in an instant and certainly for any physical therapy or rehab concerns. read more

I missed an appointment having paid their $210 deposit fee and they wanted me to pay $210 AGAIN in order to make another appointment. They wouldn't even credit any portion of my deposit fee. I found about about Dr Richter when I was searching for a supplement to add to my homemade dog food. I noticed that he had written a book so I bought a copy of that and was very impressed with his depth of knowledge and holistic approach to treatment. Then, I saw that he had a practice here in the Bay Area. Score! My 18 month old dog "Tuff" was having incontinence issues. His urine had a high PH and my two previous Vets indicated that he might have bladder stones and put him on a special prescription diet and supplements. I decided to get a second option and I'm so glad I did. Dr. Richter spent and hour with me for my first appointment and gave me a range of different options we could consider. He answered all my questions and we ended our visit with a plan of attack. Long story short, Tuff doesn't need to be on urinary prescription food or the supplements the other Vets recommended. Dr. Richter is working on a special custom medicine for him. I'm so relieved the test showed no bladder stones he has a healthy bladder. Tuff was just born with a bladder that is a bit out of position :) His entire staff is friendly and relaxed and I HIGHLY recommend him. He may be a but pricey for some BUT keep in mind he has vast experience and will help to guide you down the right path. He gives you various options but also recommends a treatment. I love the fact that he also focuses on preventive care with a holistic element to his practice. Don't worry, you will still get prescription medicine should you ever need it. Word of advice, before your first appointment with him make a list of questions you have as well as any other things you wish to discuss. Trust me, the hour goes by fast. HVC is set up nicely. they have a pool for dogs to work in, which i am hoping to try out sometime. the staff here are all friendly and show your pooch love as well. my dog gets loaded on treats everytime she comes. i have only worked with beth. she does therapy and acupuncture for my dog. i havent been to other vets that do holistic care, so i cant compare them to anyone else. i have gotten quotes from other places and it seems that their prices are comparable to other places. it costs almost $200 for therapy and accupuncture the first time, and $90 for both services after. beth has worked well with my dog during our sessions. they do have a small parking lot in the back that will only fit several cars. when their lot is full, i can always find free street parking in the area. read more

Another disappointed outcome. Spent $353 dollars with no results. Called to collect their money and didn't even bother to ask how my dog was doing. After this visit I no longer have faith in Vets and probably will never own another pet because if the get sick you just have to watch them suffer. read more
