Saint Lucy's school is a preK-8th grade preschool, elementary and middle school that is still run by sisters (Notre Dame). They have 317 students. Tuition is $6.3k. The school has AC, something rare in many Catholic schools where kids have to endure hot days. There are 2 buildings that look like the church. The one on the Southern end is the church, the other one used to be the church, but is now the gym. The school has been good about actively upgrading older buildings. My two kids have been enrolled in St. Lucy school for 6 years now and I can't say enough about how great the community here is. The most incredible part about the school is the families that go here, everyone looks out for each other and for the good of the school. The teachers are incredibly kind, don't issue too much homework, and yet have the ability to keep kids hitting top scores in the country when testing time comes around. I would really reconsider going to Saint Lucy's. Our issues actually began early on in pre-K when our child was bitten by another child in his class. It was handled very poorly to say the least. I wasn't even notified until hours later when I came to pick him up who still had bite marks on his arm. The school did nothing about the incident, even after we reported it to the school's principal. Apparently the other child and his parents were talked to about the incident but no disciplinary action was taken. That same child then bit another student that same year and again, no consequences. After that incident, that same child spit in another child. In 1st grade, my son reported an incident to his teacher and she called him a tattletale. This was after all the kids were told to do that very thing by their teacher instead of handling issues themselves. His teacher actually called her own student a tattletale. More recently (this school year) my son would approach a group of students at recess or lunchand they would make disparaging comments to him- asking him 'why are you following us around?' and some students even told my son that nobody likes him. We have had multiple conversations with his teacher as well as the principal. The principal,was very quick to point out my son's faults but had nothing to say about the other students. Also this year there was an incident where a group of students were kicking him. After the incident, my son reported it to the teacher's aide- she replied "well it's not happening now". I brought it to the attention of his teacher as well as his principal. The principal's response to us was that the girls had been spoken to but she (school principal) was very upset that my son was not properly "social distancing". So my son is closer than 6ft from another student and gets in trouble but a group of kids kick him (multiple times) and this is completely disregarded by the teachers aide and the school's principal. Another day, my son was shoved multiple times by another student (the student who bit him and another student in the past). I told my son that, if it starts to get physical again, to go to the office and call me. My son went to the office and they wouldn't  allow him to call me. So I didn't find out about this incident until hours later. More recently, a couple students were throwing rock at him. This incident happened at the beginning of the day and I didn't find out about it until I picked him up at the end of the day. Some of the teacher here and great. But be very careful with your children here. Not to mention, some of the parents have become very "clicky" over the past few years. It's like junior high all over again and then you have to worry about their safety too. Due to these reasons, we are forced to change schools next year. Speaking to the vice principal/s and staff at some of the other schools we have looked at, there are a fair amount of families that have been looking to leave Saint Lucy's for similar reasons. read more

I have been a part of the St. Lucy community since as far back as I can remember. My older brother went to K-8th grade here and still remains connected with friends from his class and attends alumni events. I have always loved this community and I new that I wanted my children to experience a catholic education. This community goes above and beyond to make our school special. We are one big family and my son has built strong friendships that will last a lifetime. He enjoys going to school everyday. All the teachers are wonderful. Wonderful community, caring teachers, and talented students! As a parent, you are encouraged to join and participate in many activities, however you are not pressured. The staff and teachers inspire the students daily to surpass their individual goals. Spiritual activities and community service are significant to their program, enhancing the students' experience. A drawback is that there could always be more in the Fine Arts program, or additional electives in Junior High. Our two kids have been very happy here! At first we were skeptical because let's face it, the outside isn't anything exciting. But once you walk in, it's a different picture. The money spent on upgrades has been put to good use, with an amazing library and computer center, a new after school care center and Pre-K room, plus state-of-the-art TV's, projectors and iPads in each classroom with today's technology (no 70s class lessons, thank you very much). Plus the staff here is fantastic! Laurie Galdes is the school Administrator and who I consider the voice of this school. She seriously does it all! She knows everything going on and how to make things happen. She is friendly, bubbly, and a go-getter. She also isn't emotional and knows how to handle things professionally. The principal Miss Grover has been a teacher here for like 25 years and is such an advocate for the school. She has been the principal for a few years now and has been making great strides in the continual improvements. She isn't stuck in the old ways, but instead wants to constantly better the school, not only for the students but for the teachers and parents as well. I greatly appreciate that teachers are moved around (or moved out) if they aren't best suited for the position they're in. It's not about tenure here, it's about being a good teacher and making a great impact on the students, and I feel that St Lucy's has really proven themselves here. The teachers have been amazing! It truly takes a village and feels like a family here. Now I just need to get my "family" to upgrade with some modern paint colors (brown trim be gone!). read more

They don't care about the kids. They don't want to teach they want parents to pay for private tutoring that they choose. If you can't pay for appropriate tutoring, your child is shunned. They pick and choose the kids they want and kick the rest out. The pastor of the Church will not get involved either. The principal has no regard for the children. Regardless of grades, your child can be kicked out if they deem it necessary. No wonder young people are leaving the Catholic Church. Look into other options before choosing a school like this. St. Lucy has been a perfect fit for my family. This school is small and intimate. From the outside, most people have no idea that there is an amazing school located by the church. It is nearly invisible from Winchester, and you can only see part of it from Kennedy. You truly have to tour the school to see what the campus has to offer. There are so many unique, amazing things that St.Lucy's offers to its students! You can never fit it all into a brochure. There are many special traditions that are never advertised. For example, when the Kindergarten class graduates to First grade, there is a large church ceremony followed by a beautiful reception in the garden for all the families and extended families. This garden reception is hosted by the First Grade parents to welcome the Kindergarteners officially into the main school. How Awesome is that?! Most grades have active Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops which hold their own activities and traditions. For example, every year all St.Lucy's Girl Scout troops host a mother-daughter tea party for Mothers Day. The girls plan and execute this special day entirely themselves. It is an amazing tradition. The Buddy Program is an awesome program which facilitates friendships across grade levels. My daughter has a friend in every grade which is wonderful. I think the Buddy program is a great bully-deterent, not that that has ever once been an issue. If you want a small school with solid family values and a close-knit community to raise your children, take a tour. Its an oasis of support in the overly competitive Silicon Valley. Every family is encouraged to have their children shadow to see if St.Lucy's is a good fit. read more
