St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Tallahassee

I spent two full hours enjoying the peace and quiet here. Established in 1931, this massive park takes up about 68000 acres along the Gulf of Mexico. Tidal creeks, saltwater marshes and the estuaries of seven Florida rivers. I entered on Lighthouse Road, a smooth two-lane roadway that extends from the entrance all the way to the south end at the lighthouse. There are several spots along the way to stop with some slightly higher ground if you're launching a kayak, fishing or birdwatching. There is a visitor center (closed for COVID) and a pay station where you're expected to include $5 for a vehicle to enter. It was great to sit at a bench facing the Gulf with no one around and no sound but the gently crashing surf and the occasional bird call. I was able to completely zone out and it was wonderful. Big thanks to Michael H. https://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=LCPTDd2gpU22X6y5-BG3sA who recommended this as a stop during my visit to Tallahassee in Talk https://www.yelp.com/topic/tallahassee-official-food-must-visit-restaurants. We had our National Park Passport to use, but no one was on duty to collect fees when we drove in. There was a self-service box, but we were not going to leave our lifelong pass. We came upon the visitor's center and education center, but because of CoVid, both were closed. Next we drove to the lighthouse, loving the trees and natural areas all around us. The lighthouse is right on the Gulf of Mexico. When we got out of the car, we held on to the car doors - strong breeze! Several other cars were parked by us. Those folks were either down by the water, talking in the parking area, or on the hiking trails. We went down behind the lighthouse to watch the thousands of sand crabs. We could have watched them for hours! It was muddy, but we didn't mind getting stuck in the muck. We walked over to the observation deck, and down to the water. Saw only a few water birds. The lighthouse was closed, again due to CoVid. We will definitely return after the pandemic. This is a beautiful, engaging area. It will be better when the visitor center and lighthouse are open.

Beautiful park. Super helpful rangers in the visitors center. Ask them about the birds! I was able to see a bald eagle in their nest since I knew where to look!! The lighthouse is in great shape and was a very peaceful stop to make.

Beautiful historic place, even in the middle of winter. These pictures were taken in January. It's a nice place to walk and take in the surroundings. We will be going back in September this year and will post more pictures.

I've been coming to this gorgeous place my whole life and every time I come it's like the first time. Yes, this is my love story with St Marks. St Marks is breathtaking, and it stays that way no matter the time of year. And yes, it's a wildlife refuge so there's tons of wildlife. During the summer you can have the pleasure of being followed by an alligator in the marsh as you walk on the dykes with beautiful swampland to your right and gorgeous bay views as far as the eye can see to your left. In the winter avoid the blustery, blistering cold wind by hiking more inland with equally as beautiful landscapes and tons of species of birds. Bring a picnic, bring family, bring visitors: St Marks is truly unique and beautiful.

What a beautiful National Wildlife Refuge. September 28, 2019 was FREE entry day at all National parks and I was able to take advantage of it! There is only one road in/out and it leads to the check in station where you normally pay the entry fee ($5). You can also get information there about the refuge. The day I visited it was a gorgeous day but the wildlife seemed subdued because of the heat. I did see many birds and fish (mullet jumping). The sun shimmering on the water, the gentle breeze and fresh air all made for a wonderful experience. There are many spots for picnicking or just sitting - looking out at the vast vista's in every direction. I recommend stopping in and spending a little "me" time and maybe read a book, take photos or maybe even catch a fish or 2.

The wilderness refuge is spectacular! I always have a little bit of trouble finding trails on the marked maps, but once you get to the entrance it is very well worn in and easy to get around. There was an area for picnics and also a walking trail out by the lighthouse. The grounds are well-maintained and clean! Overall the refuge is just beautiful with plenty to see. Great trip for anyone looking to spend an hour or two in the gorgeous scenery. The refuge also has regular photography meets for those interested in birding.

    Lighthouse restoration in progress.

Only a short twenty-five mile drive from Tallahassee, the Saint Marks Wildlife Refuge offers visitors prime ornithology, walking paths, recreational activities, and plenty of fresh air and picturesque scenery. While I enjoyed my trip I do not like the parking situation along the road. This may be a good problem to have for operating purposes but i think detracts from the experience of wildlife and nature.

Our first stop, of course, was the sinkholes and waterfall. While the waterfall itself felt a little underwhelming considering it's described as the highest waterfall in the state, the experience was still quite serene. Hearing the water drop, feeling the cool breeze from the running water, and simply pausing to take it all in made the stop worthwhile. We were a bit disappointed to find that parts of the trail system were closed off, which limited some of our planned exploration. That said, we kept walking and were able to find other trails to enjoy. We ended up wandering around for about two hours, though we know we didn't get to see everything the park has to offer. One of my favorite unexpected features was the dedicated bat habitat area, which was both interesting and unique. Overall, it's a peaceful park with more to discover than meets the eye, and a nice place to spend a couple of hours exploring nature.

With the birds chirping their morning song and the serene ambiance of walking this paved path amongst the trees, it was easy to displace the reality of being in a decent sized city for a bit. In addition to the walking trail, there is also a children's playground, a pavilion, a few picnic tables, a fitness area, and a decent sized parking lot. I would definitely recommend this pleasant walking trail and with it lit with street lights every few yards, I believe that it is open until ten o'clock at night. Go check it out for yourself, I am confident that you will not be disappointed. Overall, I will give it five stars. This trail system is all intertwined with each other so you get miles and miles of trails. There are parts that are for bicycles and other parts that are just for hiking. You can bring your dogs if they are leashed. They have a couple of trash bins and plastic poo bags on the trail. The trail is marked with milage markers. At the main parking lot there is a small pavilion with picnic tables and a small but intriguing playground. When I was there a few families were playing. This part is definitely worth a visit. Plenty of parking. Get outside!
