If I could leave a 0 star review, I would. Witnessed the actual employees and manager of the store try to fight a customer's younger brother (who was underage). They threw racist slurs against asians generally, and have never seen such unprofessionalism in a store. The store is literally owned and ran by tempernental and aggressive employees who in all honesty act like children!!! Try to avoid this store as long as you are in New York!!! I call the store looking for some relief from a massive head cold and tooth ache to boot. The guy that answered was apparently not in a good mood but I continue to tell him my address anyway - still seeming perturbed, I said to the guy, "is there a problem with this delivery (mind you I was spending over $40 for a bottle of Bourbon) His response "Do you want the order or not" and I said "not if you're going to treat your customers like this". And he responded "Then don't ever call us again" and hung up on me. Wow! Can I just live here? Or maybe work here? . . . okay, okay. I'll just come here all of the time. I was totally expecting another generic liquor store. You know, the basic booze in plastic bottles that gets the job done. The Yelp photos, however, implied that they had a few of my old "natural wine favorites" (the Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir) so I thought that I should give it a whirl. In order to prep for this nasty blizzard, I trudged through the hail and found myself in the most beautiful shop. The friendly staff offered suggestions, and here I am. Three bottles in hand, and I can't wait until I need to restock. They have some great finds, including some local New York liquors. Although not all of the wine is necessarily boutique wine (a handful could be found at Trader Joe's) I was really, truly impressed by the price range. The young man in this store was extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about his spirits. My friend was visiting from out of town and wanted to purchase a local whisky for her husband. The guy (didn't get his name) told us all about the different offerings they had and helped her pick out the perfect gift. Stopped by this place this past weekend to check it out. Lovely, bright, not overly large setup (something I hate.) Well curated thoughtful collection of fine wine and Liquor. The key takeaway was excellent personal customer service I received. Had a short conversation with one of the managers about interesting products coming out of local Brooklyn distilleries. Extra thumbs up for the awesome gin cocktail they had out as a sample. Check it out guys. No pressure to purchase. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Great tasting cocktails...what's not to like. If I lived anywhere close to this place, it would be my one stop shop for wine. From the street, I spied one of my all time favorites, and barely known, California Pinots from Au Bon Climate based in Santa Barbara. This bottle drew me into the shop and what can I say except wow!, what a great selection of both European and California wines. Normally when I'm on the East Coast, I rarely see good California wines... In general, they're more expensive than the European types, but the ones here are $20, not bad at all. There is a hard liquor selection, although I didn't pay much attention to it so can't say much there. read more

This shop is open later than most which starts this review off on a good foot. I came in looking for some drinks for a party; I ended up picking up a prosecco for around $13, an apple cider flavored whiskey for around $25, and a bottle of soju for $7. The guys here are fairly nice, although a bit assertive in their recommendations. They did a good job of explaining my options though and we also had a nice chat about calvados versus apple cider whiskey. Many of their options come chilled so be sure to ask before you leave with a luke warm bottle. read more

After purchasing a bottle of cabernet 3 days prior, I opened it with a friend. It tasted extremely off, as if it had been corked, stale, or unfathomably sweet for a normal cabernet. I live a couple doors down so I took it back to the shop to explain what happened. As soon as we walked in, we saw that there was no one in the main area and only one person sitting at a desk listening to music in the back of the store. He was reluctant to get up to help us. We stood idly at the front, until our awkward stare-off compelled him to reluctantly come see what was up. We explained what happened and he immediately disparaged us. He rolled his eyes and without saying anything, went to the back to retrieve a glass. After tasting our wine, he condescendingly told us the wine was "completely sound", that it tasted great and he had just had a bottle himself. He said he wouldn't do anything. We asked to speak with the owner whom he called in front of us. He told the owner that two patrons came in complaining about a "perfectly sound" bottle of wine and that we had "consumed 1/3 of it already", when in fact we had poured it out. He then argued about the meaning of "consumed" with us. He then hung up and said we could get new bottle of the same wine, and we could not get a different bottle of any wine, even if it was cheaper (?). He also told us that no other store or restaurant would allow us to exchange our bottle of wine. When we disputed this, he claimed he was certified sommelier and told us that from our actions it seemed that we "hadn't drank much wine" and "hadn't been to many restaurants that served wine". I've been buying wine from this store for the past 2 years and would have overlooked a mishap, but it's been an extremely long time (if ever?) since I've had service this hostile. I removed my membership and am never going back. His name was George. read more

I walked into St. Marks Wine and Liquor for the first time last night to find a quick party gift. I asked if they had Moet (Mo-wett) and was instantly corrected with "Oh, you mean 'mo-ay.' We don't have mo-ay." They made a few recommendations about other champagnes that sounded great, but over the course of a 3-minute conversation they made an effort to correct me several times on 'mo-ay.' I don't know why they made such an effort to incorrectly correct me, but it was a fairly uncomfortable experience. When you're a wine, spirits, etc. expert, I have an expectation that you at least know how to pronounce the name of one of the largest producers of champagne...or at least not make an effort to embarrass a potential customer. read more

The people who work here are all super nice, super knowledgeable and want to help you find something you'll really like. Whether you're the only customer in there or when its packed on friday nights, the service is good no matter what. Once you pick a wine, they'll dig though the fridge to find you a cold one. Wish it wasn't so tiny cause it does get packed during prime hours. read more

This store's motto should be "Small, but Brilliant!" Every bottle they stock is interesting and hard to find anywhere else. It's a pleasure to peruse the shelves, and the staff are great. A very helpful gentleman recommended the Bacco Primitivo for a certain dinner I had in mind, and it was the perfect choice (my guests were quite impressed - and surprised! - by my wine acumen ... ) Of course, the area's fun, too - so St. Marks is now my one and only wine and spirit's shop! read more

St Marks does not seem like the go-to destination for a wine shop with knowledgeable staff with well priced wine. I was expecting to walk into a dingy place where the employees only talk to you to ask for ID (if that) and to tell you the price. I was offered to try wines as soon as I walked in and was told about wines I would like based on my choices. I tasted (and bought) a $10 wine and got a $12 Tablelands Sav Blanc that I have been trying to get my hands on since trying it at Veselka. I'm very excited to go back. read more

As the majority of the other reviews indicate, this store is a gem! I live 2 blocks away & somehow only just discovered it a few weeks ago (as I typically go out of my way NOT to walk down St. Mark's Place). I also admit that I made a few assumptions/judgements before stepping foot in the store which I'm happy to report were all incorrect! I've spoken/met at least 4 different staff members and they were all extremely knowledgeable, friendly & approachable. "Very well thought out selection of wine and liquor" is an excellent description. They also are able to work within a wide price range. I've gone in 3 times in the last two weeks and have not been disappointed w/any of my purchases whether they were $15 bottles for me to enjoy at home, or a $30 red wine from France purchased as a gift. A VERY welcome addition to my neighborhood, which seems to have lost much of its history & character & now boasts of convenience stores & chains. A 7-11 on SM ??!!
