Astor Wine & Spirits has one of the most extensive selections I've ever seen. If you're looking for something specific, there's a good chance they have it. I came in searching for a specialty spirit from Ireland and a very specific perry from England. Surprisingly (because again the selection was vast) they didn't carry what I was looking for, but the staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Instead of just sending me on my way, they actually helped me track down another store (not affiliated with them) that carried them and pointed me in the right direction. That kind of service really stood out. I ended up leaving with a bottle of Gin from Hawaii and some St-Germain because the prices were excellent and the selection made it easy to find something interesting. Simply shocking sake selection! I came here to purchase sake to make miso-glaze to put on top the fresh black cod (sable fish) and Chilean sea bass that I bought at Wegman's. Employee Michael recommended the Staff Pick--Suigei Tokubetsu Junmai "Drunken Whale", so I bought that. It was fun to look around the liquor store. I came upon a bottle of Floc Gascogne, which is a French aperitif or dessert drink that I was introduced to at a now-defunct French restaurant on Long Island (Le Soir). The liqueur is so rare that few liquor stores in the U.S. sell it, per ChatGBT. If you cannot find it at Astor Wines, you cannot find it anywhere. They have daily liquor tastings, and their prices are reasonable. As a first-time shopper, I signed up for their rewards program today to get discounts. Staff is knowledgeable about their products, and they securely wrap all bottles. I highly recommend this store. read more

As 2025 winds down and we enter December, I am recognizing my favorite spots and Astor Wines and Spirits is my "go to" liquor store, which does not adequately describe Astor. I have frequented Astor over the years and have developed a relationship with one of their buyers and several associates, three of whom have moved on and now I principally deal with and through Evan. Each one of the associates has been thoroughly knowledgeable and, as one would expect, they have their strengths and weaknesses and readily solicit the recs of other associates who know more about this or that. Astor is a resource of knowledge from the associates and Nima (sp?), the buyer I know, to the vast inventory curated by the buyers, and extending to the range of representatives from the industry providing tastings and sessions on a range of subjects. They have special events I have not managed to attend, but it is all there for your information and broadening your palate. Who knew I would take such a liking to mezcal, now it's brandy from Armagnac and Cognac to Spain...Your palate and knowledge will broaden and deepen at a place like Astor. The benefit of all that knowledge and inventory is they can make great recs for purchasing for a particular event. The wide range of price points, quality levels, and selection within a given spirit genre will ensure your guests enjoy great wines at your summer or holiday season events. Your girlfriend or significant other will be impressed with your wine selection when you invite her over. Your bros will rave at that bourbon or rum to which you introduced them at the cigar lounge. You will realize you have amassed as much knowledge as you have amassed bottles and you will be ready at a moment's notice with your own curated selection at your next BYOB occasion, enjoying every sip. The prices at Astor can be slightly higher than other places, but you will do well by their regular sales. They have bargain options at regular pricing and some unbelievably great finds at mid to upper tier at astonishingly great value price points. After they know you a while, you will discover they do not price gouge on limited and allocated bottles, if and when...(Don't expect this type of access up front. Liquor stores rightly choose the regulars with whom they share and sell limited and allocateds.) Their rates are eminently fair. Astor Wines and Spirits is tremendously accessible and they deliver to certain parts of the city. Your next bottle can be no further away than your phone and fingertips. If you've never been, stop by and discover for yourself as I did some twelve or thirteen years ago. This review is a long time coming as a first, but summarizes my experience and why, in retrospect, Astor deserves recognition at the close of 2025. 4.5 stars! read more

Some 20 years ago Astor Wine and Spirits was located on ...Astor Place. It now sits on Lafayette and 4th Street...a few steps south of its former location. It is a large warehouse style shop. You would think it has a lot of Spirits but in fact it is much more of a wine shop. It is easy to shop for two major reasons. Number 1-The wine selection is large, spaced out, and organized by country / region/ varietal / then price. And number 2- the staff is plentiful, knowledgeable, and willing to help out! A pleasure! I recently bought some excellent German Trocken Riesling, recommended by a staff member. The wine was fairly priced and excellent. I also bought a bottle of Provence Rose', recommended by another staff member, which I will drink this Sunday for Father's Day. Well, as my father used to say, "we shall see what we shall see.". Aside from a vast array of wines, I've found their selection of other liquor to be very expansive--for instance, where I can't find junmai daigingo sakes elsewhere they would have 3-4 varieties of the same from the producer. As an example of their wine selection, their champagnes are not just the usual suspects but include many other producers, including small family owned wineries. Make sure you sign up for their email alerts. They have sales 3 or 4 days a week, usually be region or varietal but once a week, they have a mixed bag of items that are all 15-50% off. We often find some really stellar deals on those days. We'll stock them away in a wine fridge and happen upon it a year or two later and discover an incredible deal in our own fridge. Centrally located for lower Manhattanites on the intersection of East 4th St and Lafayette, it's a local staple with plenty of options for every type of discerning palate. Great spot to discover new wines and liquors, as they often have tastings of featured wines. I like that they have little placards with some tasting notes or staff recommendations displayed with many of the bottles, this helps the less wine-savvy people like me figure out what might suit my interests. Their products are also available online, their website inventory is pretty extensive. It amazes me how many of friends have heard of this liquor store-- and they don't even live in Manhattan. This is my way of finding out I hang out with a bunch of alcoholics... am I an alcoholic? Anywho, this might actually be the biggest liquor and wine distributor in nyc. The reason I'm writing this review is because they're one of two distributors that have Vietnam's first gin. It's called Song Cai and everyone I've introduced it to has made it their #1 gin. I sound like a fan boy, so if you're in the area, give it a shot and see for yourself. What's making it very delectable is it's extreme floralness, which is surprising because they have another gin that's marketed as even more floral. Like how many flowers can you actually taste? The bottles also really attractive, which seems to impress anybody I've shown. read more

A really nice knowledgeable guy there helped me find everything and also some tips on how to fix the drink. Reminded me of how much I miss shopping and not having everything delivered. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of most alcoholic beverages. I have never been a drinker, even in college at a school that celebrated drinking (when the drinking age was 18 there). However, I appreciate fine liqueurs, digestives, aperitifs and any locally made natural-plant rosolio or nocino. Part of my family is from Sicily and so when I saw a product infused with a fine Sicilian Marsala, I jumped at the chance to try it. One of the things I loved from my baking school days was making syrups from liqueurs with which to infuse cakes and rich breads. Marsala -- a superior one -- can be used effectively in this way and is especially good to revive panettone, for example. It can also be used to make an exotic French toast (Sicilian toast?). Now, here is the catch. It is very difficult to find a source in the US for the best Marsalas. This is where Astor W&S comes in. They sell some of the best and ship them. Great! So, after Christmas I ordered one of my favorite Marsalas to be sent to some friends for the New Year. Astor has a very good order acknowledgement and shipping system so you know your order has been received and processed, then shipped, with the method and an approximate time. The price was good, the system was easy to understand, and the selection of fine Marsalas was exceptional. However, Astor does not ship themselves. They outsource that to a third party, I am sure for a very good reason. While having an impressive potential inventory of products, they are a small, independent retailer, no matter how long they have been in NYC nor the size and loyalty of their clientele. I think things began to go awry at the outsourcer level in New Jersey (don't hold me to that theory). Instead of a reasonable week to deliver the gift, it took over two, almost three. That was not the worst of it. I got multiple delivery dates from the carrier -- Fedex, in this case -- and had to forward those dates to the recipients, in multiple, tedious, conflicting and, frankly, embarrassing emails. Why all this chaos and confusion for one bottle? The reason I had to keep forwarding these multiple emails was the fact that the giftees had to be home to sign for the bottle and I didn't want them to be rearranging their lives repeatedly in order to be there for that signature. In retrospect, I should have omitted sending any of the delivery notices. What is wrong with Fedex, by the way? They deliver to me all the time without all this unpredictability. That bottle literally made almost 25 stops from New Jersey to California. Good lord ... in 2021? It might as well have been sent by stage coach! OK, so Astor did respond with an apology to my cry for help and offered to contact Fedex when I was tearing my hair out, but it did little good. The confused delivery notices kept on until the bottle was mercifully delivered, an anticlimax and deflated gesture as a result. I was so upset that I ordered the same bottle from one of my other favorite sources, this time in San Francisco. I wanted to see how long it takes (given a much shorter distance, but still, I can extrapolate). Astor is a great place and I will likely order from them again. I hope this was a one-off. They do have an amazing catalogue, so I recommend you give them a try when you are ordering for yourself and not as a gift with a timeline. read more

Sooo...I was excited to shop here. We love our wine, and I was looking for a couple fairly hard-to-find things, and happened to be strolling by. The good: fairly large selection - kind of depends on what you are looking for but they seem to be well-stocked on French, Italian, and American reds (I know, that's pretty broad!). There are some niche finds and a small but fun selection of naturals. They even had my absolute favorite rosé on the planet (no, I am not telling but it ain't Whispering Angel). The bad: absolutely impossible to get any help or any service in what was an almost completely empty store (2 pm ish midweek). I was specifically looking for a Meursault for a dinner party; allllll the Mersaults were in a "please ask for help" case; I could not get one single person to help. I even tried talking to the guy in the Cool Room and he straight-up ignored me. (I would like to note here that I was, um, completely clean (lol), dressed nicely, and not exhibiting any signs of, well, anything that should have made me persona non grata in the vino store. Maybe it was a gender thing? Dunno....) I didn't leave empty-handed, because I did have a party to entertain, but will not be back, and will return to my trusty Amster Wines, Some Good Wine, and Leon & Sons. read more

I'm very disappointed and disgusted with the encounter with Kayla, the manager today. I brought items into the store to return with the receipt. However, they did NOT uphold their return policy and refuse to process the return. When I clearly pointed out that their return policy states "refunds on returned spirits will be issued in the original form of payment", she had many excuses and was unwilling to issue the cash refund. And instead is making the customer jump through many hoops for the return by coming up with new things that I need to do before I can get a refund.  It is a very disgusting practice for a reputable store to NOT uphold their return policy. And instead is questioning their customer about the return and creating difficulties on purpose, in order to not process the return accurately.  As a frequent customer, I was very frustrated to have to deal with this UNFAIR behavior, and will not purchase anything from them anymore.  Also, leaving this review to warn other customers to not buy from this store with their unfair practice. Since if you need to return an item (especially if it's an expensive item), they will make it difficult for the customer and will NOT UPHOLD their return policy.  -Wang read more

I died and went to Wines and Spirits Heaven. This is such a classy, sexy place. What I love most about this place is the variety that they offer. They took over the landmark Devinne Press Building which is located on Lafayette Street and E.4th Street. Astor has a wine and spirits tasting every week that is free and open to the public. Tastings are usually held during the week and on Saturdays. If you like a particular selection, Astor will apply a 15% discount to your order. I find it fascinating that they have a cool room that ensures that wines are stored at the correct temperature. Prices are reasonable and they also offer discounts. There's a 10% discount on still wine, 10% off for delivery and carryout orders. For mixed cases, there's a 10% discount for carryout orders only. Every Tuesday there's a 15% discount. They offer free shipping on orders over $99 in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Anywhere else is NYC shipping is free over $150. If for any reason you need to return or exchange their policy is that unopened spirits may be returned for a full refund. Defective wines, spirits, and sakés may be exchanged for items of equal or greater value. There's no restocking fee for returned items. All deliveries require an adult signature over 21 years of age. It's about time that I reviewed this absolute wine/liquor lovers' Mecca. They seriously have pretty much everything, whether you're looking for a selection of Canadian wines, a bottle of scotch from the '60s, or the habanero-flavored liqueur "F Trump and his Stupid F-ing Wall blend" (yes, that's real). Today, we picked up some Blackstrap rum, some Islay scotch, a Cab, Pinot Noir, and a Claret from the U.S. (the latter two on clearance), and an interesting-looking Georgian wine that blends red and white grapes. We've also gotten some excellent orange wines here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable (a staff member came over to help us with the Georgian wine as he was originally from Georgia) the store is nicely laid-out and tidy, and there's a clean bathroom. They're probably one of the (if not THE) most well known wine shops in NYC, so their reputation precedes them. And with that comes an amazing selection (of liquors as well) with some incredibly reasonable prices. The bottle I'd been looking for for a long time was Contratto Fernet (if you like Fernet, definitely pick up a bottle!). I guess it's kind of a specialty bottle, but Astor had it! Some other things I didn't remember I wanted until I saw it on their website - Pinhook Bourbon (that I first tried in Lexington, KY), Suntory Roku Gin, and all sorts of other specialty liqueurs for mixing cocktails. They also have weekly specials on specific alcohol categories. I picked up some cheap blended red wines, and... yeah, they tasted cheap. But they got the job done. Sign up for their email list, and you get a first-time customer coupon for 10% off. Spend $150 and get free shipping. But also be prepared for extended delivery times (for obvious reasons). For context, I placed my order on a Friday night, and it arrived the next Saturday. It also arrived at 9am, but that's a whole other story.
